I would love Geoff Twentyman to invite him on to having a gas so he can ask the man himself that very question. What’s more I am sure that Ben would be only too happy to explain to West Country sport’s equivalent of Jeremy Paxman what his ideas are, in detail, and why he has so far been unable to implement them. Get him on Geoff. I am sure we will all be converted afterwards.

Now that Graham Coughlan has exited the club it is under a cloud as far as I'm concerned, because the reasons that he has put forward for doing so just do not stack up. And as he has now gone and said that he would like at least three other members of Rovers coaching staff to join him at Mansfield, where do we as a club stand on being compensated for the outstanding time remaining on their contracts?
He said that he missed his home life with his wife and family in Sheffield, and that is understandable as Bristol is approximately 180 miles away making travelling home problematic given his job as manager of a League One team. But when he played for Plymouth the distance was nearly 300 miles and I believe that his wife didn't relocate to the city . . . and he stayed there for four years as a player. And of course he had an even longer stint at Southend where he signed initially as a player, and then progressed to coaching duties. Southend-on-Sea is approximately 200 miles from Sheffield, and he was there for about eight years in total. When he joined the Pirates as defensive coach he was aware of the distances involved and the possible family hardships, and apparently accepted them so well that when the managerial vacancy occurred he famously said that he would fight anyone for the job.
We are told by the club that the perilous state of the club's finances were all explained to him during the selection process, so that when he took over the reins from Darrel Clarke he was fully aware of the financial limitations on offer. Upon his appointment he declared himself happy with the training facilities, and declared the Mem to be a fortress which he liked. As for the rumoured takeover he said that it was not his business to be involved in the politics of the club.
And so he began his first year as manager and made progressive strides up the League One table, and most people were really looking forward to the next 18 months which were the remainder of his contract with the club.
But now he's gone, and I must admit to being a bit baffled by it all because in the close-season the owners allowed him to completely revamp the coaching side of the club and to a degree improve the squad too.
I do feel that there is a lot more to the story that will probably never see the light of day, but in the meantime I would like to thank GC for his efforts on behalf of the club, and to wish him the very best in his endeavours elsewhere.
But what really does concern me now is this long and protracted proposed take-over, and more immediately who the board will bring in to replace the outgoing manager. UTG.

In the time that I have supported Rovers we have had a few good cup runs, but these have been far outweighed by some absolute shockers. In that time the club have a variety of club owners, board members, managers and players, but the results have largely been the same . . . and they seem to have got worse and worse. Even the great Gerry Francis wasn't exempt.

I thought that Bristol Bears achieved an excellent result this afternoon, particularly as they were losing at half-time by a fairly hefty margin to a first-class team in the Chiefs. C'mon Bris.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching the England v New Zealand semi-final this morning, particularly so as England won of course. I have rarely seen an England XV play with such a mixture of determination and skill, and they got their just rewards against an All Black team that couldn't seem to get going today.
In any event England have made the Final and can now sit back and watch Wales and South Africa slug it out tomorrow. But if England can reproduce the form that they showed today in the final, then it will take an extremely good performance to stop them lifting that trophy.

I doubt that too many will be chanting his name from the terraces, but nevertheless welcome to the Pirates Jordi.

I first saw Lindsay Parsons play for BRFC in a reserve team fixture at Eastville, on (or near) a Boxing Day in the early to mid-1960s. It was a cold and misty day and I watched the game from the North Enclosure, and felt immediately that here was a young player on his way through the ranks.
I believe that I'm correct in saying that he got his break into the First XI when Alex Munro sustained his awful injury, and he never looked back. But who can forget the composure that he showed when taking his penalty in the Watney Cup final? He was a stalwart of the club's defence for many seasons, and I always hoped that he might one day find his way back to the club when we could have used his encyclopedic knowledge of players to our advantage. Now clearly he had much bigger fish to fry, but you can hope eh?
RIP Lindsay.

Beats me how Upson keeps his place when Lines is by far a more creative influence and his free kicks and corner kicks have been missed. GC clearly favours EU and Lines future at the Club may well lie elsewhere ...Cheltenham or Yeovil maybe ? Yeovil? Aaaargh. Down there with that ginger buffoon. What has Chris Lines ever done to you, eh?

Previous thread it was stated out of contract end of season! So, that's something else to worry about then.

Many years ago I was at a match at Eastville, at a time when Gordon Fearnley was playing for us. It was approaching full-time and the Rovers were awarded a corner at the Muller Road end of the ground. I cannot remember the score, but as I was keen for the corner to be taken asap we definitely weren't winning. In any event Gordon came slowly towards the south enclosure side to take the kick, and the people around me were becoming exasperated with the time that he was taking to prepare himself. He acknowledged the crowd and took the kick, which was headed in (I believe). But in the meantime the referee had blown his whistle for full-time whilst the ball was in the air, and crucially before it had crossed the line. Poor old Gordon turned to the crowd for some comfort and was met with what he least wanted, but the point is that he didn't react to the observations that came his way . . . possibly because he was a professional, and possibly because he knew that the crowd was justified to be frustrated with his actions.

We might just have to widen the net a little lower, our reputation wasn't bad enough to sign Matthews or Upson or Sercombe I love positivity, particularly at times like these.

A good occasion in a grand stadium, but ultimately ever-so-slightly deflating for us Rovers supporters. The game aside my main memory of the day was the bitingly cold wind in Cardiff that day.

I have very fond memories of watching Terry Oldfield playing for Rovers at Eastville, not so much for his skill but for his undoubted commitment and enthusiasm for the team. I can well remember on one occasion a wag shouted from the North Enclosure ''come on Oldfield, you're playing like an elephant in tights.'' This caused a ripple of laughter from the crowd, and even Terry looked across and smiled. Special times, and a special player.
RIP Terry.

I can say with some certainty that we did have onboard quite a number of stadium-related experts at one time, including one who it was claimed was responsible for the delivering of the new Wembley Stadium.
Whether they are still with us though, is anyone's guess.

What's the point in updating any of the current facilities if we are going to knock it all down more bulls*** from our owners and a new shop to sell our fabulous range of merchandise?? We are miles behind similar clubs in our range of kit / leasure wear and the marketing is a joke there is a good sized customer base who we should be targeting I receive emails from celtic on a weekly basis and spend a fair amount of money each year with them why aren't we doing the same it's 3 weeks before Xmas and the club shop hasn't any kit to sell there's any old saying you can polish a turd but it's still a turd well that's what our club feels like to me at the moment But the Mem has been rotting for 20 years and has barely been touched. GD, NH et al, kept saying not worth it, we are moving or redeveloping and The Mem has been ignored. It needs TLC in the short term whatever IMO. They might as well not spend any money had they, seeing as they want out, Hani doesnt like football and all that Jazz Where are Ed and his Chinese matesWhere indeed. Oh it's all gone quiet, all gone quiet, all gone quiet over there.
