"I accept that my actions on Saturday were wrong," Payne said.
"My family were in the stand and witnessed a small minority of supporters direct abuse towards myself throughout Saturday's game - which I reacted to in the incorrect manner.”
"In my short time at the club, I have already witnessed that we are fortunate to have the backing of a great fan base and I apologise for my actions on Saturday afternoon.”
Manager Darrell Clarke added, "We by no stretch excuse Stefan's actions following the final whistle at Oakwell."
"Once again, the Rovers fans travelled in great numbers to show their support for the team and we value the great following and backing that we receive away from home.
"A good number of Rovers supporters made the long trip to Barnsley on Saturday and we as a team are grateful for that support.
"While we are all feeling frustration given the current climate of the league position, it's important that we are all pulling together in the right direction.
"A full internal investigation was actioned after the game and a disciplinary procedure has been concluded.

I remember when Steve White gave the V sign to fans who had been giving him stick I am sure that Harold Jarman did the same I cant remember them apologising, most of us thought fair play to them. People these days want to stand behind fences and shout abuse but when someone has the temerity to have a go back the abusers get upset and want an apology FFS what pathetic times we live in.

Yes, you are right about the times we live in but we live in them and the club did the right thing in dealing with it quickly and SP did the right thing in apologising. Matter over we move on. UTG!

When you got Ollie in interview saying he got personal abuse from the Sh*tHeads in 90, and him going into the dressing room and it psyching up his teammates, something similar should be happening with Payne.
It's not fair to abuse anyone in any walk of life, but you would hope someone would be taking him by scruff of neck saying what he done was way out of order to a paying public that cares more for the club than he does..

Imagine dreaming of being a pro footballer Imagine working hard for years and getting the break Imagine working hard all week to deliver Imagine a whole club focussed on delivering Imagine hitting the bar and just not getting the breaks despite playing your heart out Imagine worrying if one bad year will see you at Tiverton town next year
And as you feel totally frustrated with the situation..
One of your fans gives you vile abuse, tells you you’re rubbish and not trying.
I don’t blame him.
I’m not saying footballers are martyrs. They are highly paid. The terrace is entitled to their view. However, SP is entitled to give it back.
I doubt he thought “well, I’ll give it 50% effort, I don’t care”
I have NEVER berated a player in blue and white. I’ve bood about twice.
My issue is berating the opposition. They are the people you need to get to!
The only team I really didn’t like were the Campbell lot who didn’t play for Penney and got us relegated. I don’t think a lot of them cared.
This team are not like that at all.

Funny how this thread has gone in the 'tut-tut youngsters today' direction. In my experience of going to Rovers games over the years the vast majority of nasty abuse I've seen handed out towards our own team has come from pissed up red faced men of 50+ who tend to be the most likely to react with self-entitled indignation if they receive anything back from their targets.

The north enclosure had a few mind back in the day. Old Harold got a bit of stick an' all if he was having a bad day.

There’s a happy medium somewhere, I think! Note that the younger generation also have to deal with a transient job market, a breakdown in familiy units, and crucially, Dickensian style lack of suitable housing, mainly to enrich wealthy people in the generation above. Them old lot don’t know they’re born, they don’t know what it’s like to spend 70% of your income on a mouldy bedsit! On the whole I think things are better now, but we all have our cross to bear. I agree with above though, that the war generation (or “silent” generation) were perhaps the finest we ever produced, and the boomers that followed whilst doing important things on social justice, tore apart the traditional values in a horrible experiment which has not worked out as the utopia we hoped. We are better off these days, but we have had the bonds of family and community smashed.

Eric cantona had the right idea to take out an opposition supporter with a Kung Fu kick after receiving verbal abuse.

Blimey quite a few sticking up for Payne.
If I told one of my customers at work to F**k off or called them a wa*ker I'd be sacked, end of.
This guy has had more clubs than Fred Flintstone and according to Shrews fans this reaction is not out of character either...

If I had a load of bellicose puss heads spending two hours slagging me off while I’m trying to do my job I’d probably snap as well. People who dish out stick but can’t take it when there is a reaction are the lowest of the low.
