Sad to report the death of former Rovers player Terry Oldfield aged 78 on 28 March.
Terence James Oldfield born 1 April 1939 was a former professional footballer, who played as a centre forward and wing half in The Football League for Bristol Rovers and Wrexham between 1958 and 1967.
Oldfield began playing football in his home town of Bristol, first for Bristol Boys, and then briefly as an amateur for Bristol City and Clifton St. Vincents. He signed with Bristol Rovers as an amateur in February 1958, and turned professional with them in 1960. He made 132 League appearances and scored eleven goals with The Pirates, before joining Welsh club Wrexham and being appointed their captain in 1966. He was only to last a single year with The Robins though, a knee injury sustained in the Welsh Cup Final against Cardiff City forced him to retire from playing in 1967, aged 28.
After his retirement from playing, he worked as the trainer of Bradford Park Avenue, a scout for Bristol Rovers, and a manager of his former non-League side Clifton St. Vincents. In addition, he also worked as an estate agent and auctioneer in Keynsham, and ran the Red Lion pub in Odd Down. He also played cricket for Brislington Cricket Club, and golf for Saltford golf club. Was a taxi driver in Backwell for many years before his retirement.
His funeral takes place on Mon 23 April at 1030am at South Bristol Crem.

I have very fond memories of watching Terry Oldfield playing for Rovers at Eastville, not so much for his skill but for his undoubted commitment and enthusiasm for the team. I can well remember on one occasion a wag shouted from the North Enclosure ''come on Oldfield, you're playing like an elephant in tights.'' This caused a ripple of laughter from the crowd, and even Terry looked across and smiled. Special times, and a special player.
RIP Terry.

Can you imagine anyone doing so many jobs now, after being forced to retire. It really amazes me how he did it

Has Terry's death been acknowledged at the beginning of a match? We do it so often for a variety of reasons and I would have thought this was a most deserving reason.
