Now that Graham Coughlan has exited the club it is under a cloud as far as I'm concerned, because the reasons that he has put forward for doing so just do not stack up. And as he has now gone and said that he would like at least three other members of Rovers coaching staff to join him at Mansfield, where do we as a club stand on being compensated for the outstanding time remaining on their contracts?
He said that he missed his home life with his wife and family in Sheffield, and that is understandable as Bristol is approximately 180 miles away making travelling home problematic given his job as manager of a League One team. But when he played for Plymouth the distance was nearly 300 miles and I believe that his wife didn't relocate to the city . . . and he stayed there for four years as a player. And of course he had an even longer stint at Southend where he signed initially as a player, and then progressed to coaching duties. Southend-on-Sea is approximately 200 miles from Sheffield, and he was there for about eight years in total. When he joined the Pirates as defensive coach he was aware of the distances involved and the possible family hardships, and apparently accepted them so well that when the managerial vacancy occurred he famously said that he would fight anyone for the job.
We are told by the club that the perilous state of the club's finances were all explained to him during the selection process, so that when he took over the reins from Darrel Clarke he was fully aware of the financial limitations on offer. Upon his appointment he declared himself happy with the training facilities, and declared the Mem to be a fortress which he liked. As for the rumoured takeover he said that it was not his business to be involved in the politics of the club.
And so he began his first year as manager and made progressive strides up the League One table, and most people were really looking forward to the next 18 months which were the remainder of his contract with the club.
But now he's gone, and I must admit to being a bit baffled by it all because in the close-season the owners allowed him to completely revamp the coaching side of the club and to a degree improve the squad too.
I do feel that there is a lot more to the story that will probably never see the light of day, but in the meantime I would like to thank GC for his efforts on behalf of the club, and to wish him the very best in his endeavours elsewhere.
But what really does concern me now is this long and protracted proposed take-over, and more immediately who the board will bring in to replace the outgoing manager. UTG.
