From the OS At our last home game, against Dartford, visiting goalkeeper Jason Brown was racially abused by one of our supporters stood on the terrace behind his goal. The investigation into that incident continues but Bristol Rovers want to show the football world that we are not a racist club and that we will continue to do all we can to eradicate racial abuse from the Memorial Stadium and, indeed, all football stadia. It may have been an isolated incident but it was one too many as far as we are concerned and one of our supporters has suggested a quite innovative idea that we propose to implement at this Saturday’s game against Forest Green Rovers. As a result, we will be issuing a red card to the first 5,000 supporters coming through the turnstiles and ask them to raise them in the air for one minute when the players come out on to the pitch at 2.55pm. We hope that as many of our supporters as possible will participate in this show of unity to demonstrate resolve to rid the game of racial abuse Read more at www.bristolrovers.co.uk/news/article/rovers-red-card-to-racism-2015463.aspx#HCCsSiidtvFcLCg0.99

Good idea - why not extend it further - homophobia for instance

I assume the red cards will have some kind of "Racism Out" slogan on them - otherwise it kind of looks like we want all the players to get off the pitch. And let's hope if someone starts racial abuse in future they will be told in no uncertain terms by fans around them to shut up or get out.

Good move by the club.
Perhaps they could do a text service where you can report people? Not everyone feels they can approach stewards, plus if someone's being openly racist they may well be a violent sod and all.

I think that Arsenal have a text system in place - a very good idea, as in an all seater stadium you would be quite conspicuous leaving your seat to speak to a steward.

Oh dear.... Not sure I want any part of this world we are currently living in. Text messages to tell on people? ? Isn't the world a miserable enough place without having some horrible sod hanging on your shoulder waiting for you to slip up so they can get you in trouble. What's next being reported for swearing? I get it and i agree racism is a horrible thing but this is going way to far. Many people I stand near make the odd racist joke. I wouldn't like to see any of my friends that I've been standing by for years being reported and banned. You all act so high any mighty but at the end of the day you are all just cowards who wouldn't have the balls to call someone racist to their face and tell them they are in the wrong. I can'timagine anyone in the Blackthorn doing this, they would have to be very brave and hats of to them if they did this, massive respect. Maybe the world would be a better place if people said things face to face instead of hiding on internet forums or behind text messages. I originally decided to not touch this topic with a 10 foot barge pole but this is getting ridiculous...... This world is vile.

This is more for the kind of nasty racist s**t that happened last week, not listening in on jokes. No-one tells stewards about people telling jokes at the moment do they so why would the text system change that? Thing is, if someone's shouting at an oppo player calling him the "N" word, a lot of people might not, as you say, have "the balls" to confront them - because they might be a woman, or have their kids with them, or the bloke doing it might be acting aggressively and people don't want to get punched.

Great move by BRFC hope it shows football that we are a good club and the vast vast majority of our fans are decent people, and let's hope the media cover it with the same zest as the original incident......
