I noticed you state the Tudor Kings messed things up. I have always been a fan of Queen Elisabeth, one of two Tudor Queens. Very very intelligent woman and the standing of England advanced under her (not so popular with the Catholics). I think she could speak about 7 languages fluently, and used to do mind puzzles for fun. Played a very intelligent diplomatic game. Also understood modern PR! The 'Wolf Hall' series was on BBC4 last week, very interesting. Thomas Cromwell very interesting 'common man' who rose to the top (and then fell). Not sure I would want Henry VIII as my boss. No. I said the Stuart kings did. Sorry for not making it clear. The Tudors were pretty smart and transformed the country. Yes, Wolf Hall was excellent, Cromwell was the ‘common man’ who rose to the top. But they all got their revenge on him not only by getting him the chop but making sure the executioner was drunk. Messy!Luckily for him, he had died some years before his 'execution'! I shall have to try and watch 'Wolf Hall' now I have a bit of time on my hands,

I can think of two other Welsh ex league clubs you could have had. Good shout. I’ve been to Merthyr, it’s a cracking ground. I cover that area with work, but sadly have only had a chance to peek through the fences to see it and not got to a game yet. Looks great.

I like the Tudor period. Lots of political and social intrigue and over the years it’s become very popular with several very good books and programmes but the Stuarts leave me a bit cold. So many advantages yet somehow the kings all managed to screw it up. UTG! The winners get to write the history books. I doubt if any of the old monarchs methods would compare well with modern practices, but Elizabeth seems to be one ruthless b'stard, yet it was her half sister & predecessor that managed to end up with the sobriquet 'Bloody'. Just to go off on a slight tangent, when I was a child, I seem to remember Victoria was never portrayed in a particularly good light, yet in the past couple of decades, she seems to have been re-invented (on film in particular) as someone very different. Could just be my imagination of course, I should have asked my grandparents who were Victorians as I imagine many other posters grandparents were (this forum seems to be full of 'more senior' people).

Robin Hood of course. The one with Richard Green not Kevin C! Late 50s early 60s. Proper stuff. And The Virginian on a Friday night to celebrate the start of the weekend. UTG! The Virginian was another favourite of mine.

Oh you mean Henry 3, Edwards 1,2 &3 and Richard 2 More or less but strictly speaking it began with the accession of Henry II in 1154 and ended with Richard IIIs death at Bosworth Field in 1485, over 300 years. Quite a dynasty. Stephen was the last of the Norman kings before and Henry VII the first Tudor King after. UTG! I was of course confusing 'The House of Plantagenet' with 'The Plantagenets'. Every day's a school day!

Bloody hell, I never realised we had so many famous fans! A quick glance and I can see A former Australian test captain A TV presenter/DJ/Former gameshow host A former Labour Leader The King of Pop AND the King of Soul A playwright & national treasure A famous Scottish Actor or TV professor An annoying musical type singer/DJ An ex Bristol City goalkeeper, two former strikers (one of whom I think probably is really him!) and the son of an ex City manager and player who is know a football league manager himself. An ex Speedway rider Current MP and former Health Secretary whose name became rhyming slang. A Doctor Who The bloke behind the Wombles The man whose words we hang on during election night A rugby World Cup winning manager And the most famous highwayman of all ! (I should point out that isn't any of the former directors on the list)

Marine Boy Flashing Blade (Love the theme tune and the terrible dubbing of actors words always fascinated me) Banana Splits Ha! You beat me to it Rex, I was gonna nominate the Flashing Blade & Banana Splits (the writers of this show were clearly on something strong)! I also liked the Double Deckers. Of course the Double Deckers ! I loved that (again great theme tune) . I remember one episodes which where 'men from outer space' were roaming the streets and in turned out they were just promoting a new sweet, it absolutely terrified me at the time!

Name the x EFL club you would most like to see win a place back in the EFL. I have a few but I'll go with Workington. I will go with Workington as well, just so I can tick off their ground before it's demolished.

Yes agree they viewed themselves to a degree as French, although the nation state of France didn’t really exist. A monarch existed but not really a country it was a series of regions/dukedoms. They spoke French and looked at the world in French, but was there a French nation? Not really nation states are relatively recent creations. Henry II probably exemplified that type of King the best. Yes the normans were originally Norseman but I think William ‘the b******’ was more French than Norse in the end. Of course the Anglo Saxons were German and Danish in origin. The north of England was very Norse. We are a mixture of many nations, Vive le mixed nature of our country! I tell you what, the standard of debate here has risen a notch during lockdown! Shall we have a guess the gate for Agincourt?

I'm afraid you can expect more of me diving in on any threads that mentions kings and queens, US state capitals and the London Underground No, that’s good, don’t apologise. I’m afraid I’m a bit of an anorak when it comes to British history esp the Plantagenets. UTG! Oh you mean Henry 3, Edwards 1,2 &3 and Richard 2

Greenocks only up the road I often drive to Scotland and have done up and back in a day a few times, I do around 50,000 miles a year with work, so luckily it doesn't really bother me. I find the highlands very peaceful, so normally just rent a cottage for a week and just drive around to a few different places during the day and sit in the cottage of an evening drinking too much whisky. Do you do the drive there and back, alone ? Most of the time yes. I do mostly stay over for at least one night though (Glasgow is a great night out)

The Norman kings weren't 'often more French than English' they were exclusively French. Henry 1st was admittedly born in England, but to French parents. After the Norman kings there were a couple more born in France (and later Holland and Germany) I will be marking everyone's History homework later . After you’ve learnt the reigns of the kings I presume.😉 I think Henry IV was the first English king to have English as a first language. And he wasn’t even brought up as a royal prince but was Duke of Lancaster before replacing Richard II. Well done Rex. UTG! I'm afraid you can expect more of me diving in on any threads that mentions kings and queens, US state capitals and the London Underground

For anybody who hasn't worked with John, take 5 minutes, read what's on that link, compare it to the drivel that's come out of the SC and from Masters in recent years, then you'll see what the SC lost the day he stood down. All very sad. To my knowledge I have only met John once , I must have been renewing my SC membership at the ground (I seem to remember you had to be a member to get access to the bar) he recognised my name (from the Gaslist I think) and we had a very brief chat. He seemed a thoroughly decent bloke, something I had already knew he would be from his Gaslist contributions and I remember being saddened when I heard of his resignation, I thought Rovers had lost a real asset. I don't really know anyone at the SC, Jim does seem a decent sort of bloke, but I don't really seem him as much of a figurehead and I can't see any reason for re joining the SC. I'm sure I would feel differently if someone like John M was still there.

Epping tend to agree with you that the UK has historically not been insular. Indeed I think we have been very open. We tend to easily absorb other culturals. The English Channel has however had different functions over time. It was until Henry VIII viewed as a highway to the continent and indeed the Norman English Kings were often more French than English. That changed with good old Henry VIII which made a decisive break with the continent for his own reasons. I however very much feel very European (I like the US but more and more feel it is culturally more distinct to us than European culture) and I dont agree with British exceptionalism. We were always open to the world but we have always had a slightly high opinion of ourselves, but that is not unusual for nations, the Yanks, the Chinese, the French, the Russians, the Japanese and indeed the Italians (the Romans) have all had it as one time or the other and many others. Anyway as I say we need to concentrate on this country now and what happens to the EU is up to them. The Norman kings weren't 'often more French than English' they were exclusively French. Henry 1st was admittedly born in England, but to French parents. After the Norman kings there were a couple more born in France (and later Holland and Germany) I will be marking everyone's History homework later .

Probably the Highlands and or/Ireland Both of those places have some incredibly breathtaking scenery. I once drove to Greenock and back , in the sane day, to pick up my huge cat, a Maine coon Male who is called Cosmo as his name but his pedigree name is Armorica Viking raider. That drive had me in brief periods of both confusion & hallucination. I truly didn’t understand how long it would take. Thank gid Cosmo was so incredibly well behaved and he got into my home & went straight to the litter tray. Maine coons are adorable but I will not be driving to Scotland and back, in one day, ever again ! Greenocks only up the road I often drive to Scotland and have done up and back in a day a few times, I do around 50,000 miles a year with work, so luckily it doesn't really bother me. I only found this as I was looking at a person who is following me but would you care to redress that given that we are letting in some 40K workers as the farmers cannot get the indigenous people to undertake the farm work plus other than temperatures, they are not being tested for covid ? British brats are all far too important studying rubbish at university, or actually, disrupting universities by demanding equality of outcome across everything rather than studying and they certainly can't be out working for a living, no way, that's beneath them, that work's for Johnny Foreigner, he's somehow magically excluded from this equality of outcome argument. And of course, the universities allow it to continue because every gobby kid with blue hair earns them a tidy profit. God help us in 30 years when this generation suddenly realise that it's time for them to take their place in society and start making important and difficult decisions. This all seems rather at odds with your criticism of the SC and that they should be encouraging the younger generation! Of course the truth is, this generation is no better or no worse than the one before it.

All good! I just don’t think people should lose sight of Ben statistically being the worst permanent appointment in our history. Absolutely nothing to do with the thread which is about a fine message that the manager wrote. I'm in no doubt you can think of an "amusing" song in response. He knows how to write But his tactics are s**te Oh Benny Garner He knows how to write I thank you.

60 a day ! of a Balkan mixture with a higher nicotine content. Plus the drinking,he admits to half a bottle of spirits a day but he drinks more than that on many occasions (and still drives). I think that Bond is a cartoon character, I preferred Bernie Samson in the Deighton books. I’m sure you know that many believe that the books were based on Flemings own life. He was incredibly intelligent and much to back up the theory that he was a spy. I think it was celebrity who wants to be a millionaire that he won the top prize and with consumate ease. A very intriguing figure and well worth reading about. He didn’t even use up one of the three lifeline options if I remember it correctly ? I had not heard of any cartoon but I will certainly look, now you have told me. Thank you I thought Fleming was definitely a spy, or at least worked in intelligence? He certainly wasn't on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire though!
