Assistant manager Craig Shakespeare and first-team coach Liam Bramley have also left Carrow Road. Steve Weaver and Allan Russell have taken caretaker charge of the team. "As the club continues to work towards its on-field objectives this season, the board believe that it is the right time to make this transition," Norwich said in a statement. "The club will now work to identify and appoint a new head coach that is able to deliver both the level of performances required to challenge at the top end of the league whilst implementing a consistent style of play." Smith publicly questioned the attitude of some fans after the home defeat by Blackburn on 17 December and said playing away was better for his side. "I think a lot of them have been waiting for this period to happen, or wanting it to - I don't know," he told BBC Radio Norfolk at the time.

Danny Cowley: Portsmouth sack head coach after nine league games without victory..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/17C26/production/_128181379_cowleysrex1.jpgPortsmouth have sacked head coach Danny Cowley after a run of nine League One games without a win left them nine points from the play-off places. His brother - and assistant - Nicky has also been sacked, with the pair spending 22 months at Fratton Park. The former Lincoln and Huddersfield coaches had replaced Kenny Jackett. They led Pompey to an eighth-placed finish in 2020-21 - missing out on the play-offs by two points - before guiding them to 10th last season. "We are desperately disappointed that, following our recent run of results, we have today made the difficult decision to part company with Danny and Nicky," said chief executive Andrew Cullen. "Both Danny and Nicky have given everything to Pompey, working so hard inside and outside of the training ground with a determination to bring success - not just to the football club, but to the city of Portsmouth and the wider community." In the 97 matches Cowley and his brother were in charge for, Portsmouth won 42 times and lost 28 games in all competitions.

David Wagner: Norwich City set to appoint ex-Huddersfield Town boss as new manager..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/EC21/production/_128194406_gettyimages-1347975385.jpgFormer Huddersfield boss David Wagner is set to replace Dean Smith as Norwich City manager, with an announcement likely within the next 36 hours. Smith was sacked on 27 December after poor results led to a fan backlash. Since then, Norwich have slipped to 11th in the Championship and have now collected just one point from their past four games. Wagner got Huddersfield promoted to the Premier League in 2017 and then successfully kept the Terriers up. However, he left the club midway through the following season, by which time they were well on their way to relegation. He has subsequently had unsuccessful spells in Germany with Schalke, and Switzerland with Young Boys. However, he is well known to Norwich sporting director Stuart Webber, who worked with Wagner at Huddersfield. Although other candidates were interviewed, it is felt at Carrow Road that Wagner's preferred style of play, his past work with younger players and enthusiasm for the job will help turn around results at the club and create the kind of link with the fans that was lost after Smith replaced popular former manager Daniel Farke. Despite their poor recent run of form, Norwich are only three points outside the play-offs in a congested Championship table, with only seven points separating Blackburn, in third, and Swansea, in 15th.

Cardiff City sack manager Mark Hudson..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/5EEC/production/_128300342_cdf_041022_cf_cardiff_v_blackburn_005.jpgMark Hudson played for Cardiff for five years Struggling Cardiff City have sacked manager Mark Hudson after four months in charge of the Championship club. The former Bluebirds captain was relieved of his duties within hours of their 1-1 home draw against bottom-club Wigan Athletic. Dean Whitehead takes interim charge of Cardiff, who are one place and three points above the relegation zone. "The club's search for a new permanent manager will begin immediately," Cardiff said in a statement. Tom Ramasut stays on as assistant manager of the Bluebirds with goalkeeping coach Graham Stack also remaining among the backroom staff. Cardiff added: "The board of directors would like to place on record its thanks to Mark for all of his work as a player, coach and manager whilst with the Bluebirds. "We wish Mark all the very best of luck for the future." Cardiff are winless in nine games and the draw against Wigan underlined their struggles, having led through a Callum O'Dowda goal until Will Keane's dramatic late equaliser. Hudson is the second manager the Bluebirds have sacked this season after they dismissed Steve Morison in September. A former Cardiff player, Hudson was initially appointed on an interim basis, but Cardiff announced him as their permanent boss in November.

Assistant head coach David Kerslake will also leave the Championship club, who are second bottom of the table. "The club would like to thank Michael and David for their efforts during their time at Bloomfield Road and wish them all the best," a statement said. David Moyes will be sacked by West Ham if they lose to Everton and then could be taking over at Everton ?
West Ham are reportedly ready to sack David Moyes if the Hammers lose to Everton on Saturday, at which point Moyes will immediately become the favourite for the Toffees’ job.
The Hammers have claimed just one point from their last seven games and another defeat at home to an equally poor Everton side would force the east London club’s hand, according to the Daily Telegraph.
And then, if we are to believe what we read, Moyes would immediately become a target for Everton, who he successfully kept in the Premier League for 11 years between 2002 and 2013.
Moyes is the odds-on favourite to be the next Premier League manager to leave his job but reports suggest that the club would prefer to stick with the Scot if possible, but they have been forced to come up with alternatives.
‘Nuno Espirito Santo, Rafael Benitez and Sean Dyche are all viewed as potential fire-fighters for West Ham,’ says the Telegraph, but West Ham do not really need a fire-fighter as they have conceded only 25 goals in 19 games, giving them the best defensive record in the bottom half of the Premier League.
The problem is a lack of goals and West Ham fans are increasingly frustrated that Moyes is reluctant to use Said Benrahma and Gianluca Scamacca.

Mick McCarthy: Blackpool appoint veteran boss until end of the season..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/16337/production/_128353909_shutterstock_editorial_11806265k.jpgBlackpool have appointed ex-Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy as their new head coach until the end of the season. The Seasiders, who are 23rd in the Championship, sacked Michael Appleton on Wednesday after a run of one win in 11 league games. McCarthy, 63, has been out of the game since leaving Cardiff by mutual consent in October 2021. His first match in charge will be Saturday's home game against fellow strugglers Huddersfield. McCarthy, who has also managed Millwall, Sunderland, Wolves and Ipswich in England, will be joined by long-serving assistant Terry Connor at Bloomfield Road. "I'm delighted to be here, I'm delighted to be back in the game," McCarthy said. "I'm thrilled to be back up at a club where I've had many battles in the past and hopefully we can achieve some of the similar success of those years." Blackpool are three points adrift of safety and without a win in the Championship since beating Coventry on 29 October. They have only picked up four points from a possible 30 since then. "From the initial contact with Mick, you sensed an excitement to come to Blackpool yet a calmness and confidence about the job ahead," chief executive Ben Mansford added. "Mick referred to our superb support from the first conversation and how important the fans will be for the remaining 19 games, starting against Huddersfield on Saturday."

Frank Lampard: Everton manager sacked after defeat by West Ham..

They are second from bottom of the table with 15 points from 20 matches, above Southampton on goal difference. Former England midfielder Lampard, 44, replaced Rafael Benitez in January 2022 with the team 16th in the table and helped Everton avoid relegation. Everton are now looking for their sixth permanent manager in five years. After a 1-1 draw at reigning champions Manchester City on 31 December, Everton have lost 4-1 to Brighton at Goodison Park, were knocked out of the FA Cup with a 3-1 defeat at Manchester United and were then beaten by Southampton despite taking the lead, before the latest defeat by West Ham. They have managed only three wins all season. There have been widespread and vocal protests from fans against the board in recent games, and supporters staged a sit-in demonstration after the loss to Southampton. Everton's board of directors missed that game because of what the club claimed was a "real and credible threat to their safety". Merseyside Police said no threats or incidents had been reported to officers prior to the fixture before Everton announced "enhanced security procedures" would be put in place. That was also in response to some supporters confronting defender Yerry Mina and midfielder Anthony Gordon as they left Goodison Park in their cars last weekend. Everton owner Farhad Moshiri attended his first game in 14 months at West Ham, along with much-criticised long-serving chairman Bill Kenwright. Moshiri suggested, when questioned by Sky Sports at the game, that it was not down to him decide on Lampard's future. Ian Burchnall: Forest Green Rovers part company with head coach..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1789B/production/_128411469_shutterstock_editorial_13721498ax.jpgForest Green Rovers part company with head coach Ian Burchnall, with the club bottom of League One. Ex-Notts County boss Burchnall was appointed in May, after the departure of Rob Edwards to Watford and Forest Green's promotion to League One. However, they have won just five of their 28 league matches this season and are four points from safety. "The challenge was greater than I could have thought coming in," Burchnall said in a statement. "For the fans, I am sorry that I couldn't make it work and that they didn't see the best of my team. I hope for them the team turns it around. They deserve a team in League One." Under former boss Edwards, the Gloucestershire club won the League Two title and were promoted to the third tier for the first time in their history. But they are now without a win in their last eight matches in all competitions, with Burchnall's departure coming after their 1-0 defeat at 10-man Bolton on Tuesday. Forest Green have the worst goal difference in League One and have played more games than all of their relegation rivals. "Our first season in League One was always going to be a challenge in itself but it's been been made more difficult by a number of factors, with their roots in last summer," said chairman Dale Vince. "I believe in Ian as a coach, but circumstances have led us to this place, we've recruited strongly in the January window, player wise - now we need to recruit a new head coach - to give ourselves the best chance or staying in this league."

Duncan Ferguson: Incoming Forest Green Rovers head coach embraces challenge of his first top job..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/F7C8/production/_128423436_gettyimages-1235236294.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/480A/production/_128424481_whatsappimage2023-01-26at14.02.18.jpgForest Green Rovers have appointed former Everton assistant manager Duncan Ferguson as their new head coach. The 51-year-old is taking on his first full-time managerial role and replaces Ian Burchnall who left on Wednesday with the club bottom of League One. Former striker Ferguson made 273 appearances for the Toffees and also had two spells as their caretaker manager in 2019 and 2022. He has signed a five-year contract with the Gloucestershire side. "Obviously it's a big step for myself but it's one I'm looking forward to," Ferguson told BBC Radio Gloucestershire. "I've come to a club that's a great club and we're looking to stay in the division, and kick on as the years go on." Former Everton team-mate Tony Grant will work alongside Ferguson as assistant head coach. Forest Green are four points from safety and have won just five of their 28 matches this season, having played more games than their relegation rivals. They are without a victory in their past eight matches with their last win coming on 10 December. As a player, Ferguson scored 73 goals for Everton in two spells from 1994 to 2006. He began his career at Dundee United and also played for Rangers and Newcastle United. He was also capped seven times by Scotland. He joined Everton's coaching staff in 2014 and left last summer to pursue his first managerial position. "We're all excited to welcome Duncan, he is someone I have admired from a far for a while," Forest Green chairman Dale Vince told the club website. "It's just fantastic to have the opportunity to work with him in this next phase of our journey toward the Championship." Prior to the announcement of Ferguson's appointment, Vince said the club was looking to appoint someone with "experience" as swiftly as possible with the hope of bringing in "a couple more" players during this January transfer window.

Kolo Toure: Wigan Athletic sack boss after no wins from 9 games in charge..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/11DF3/production/_128430237_gettyimages-1457179081.jpgWigan Athletic have sacked boss Kolo Toure after he failed to win any of his nine games in charge. The former Arsenal and Manchester City defender was only appointed as Leam Richardson's successor in November. However, the Latics took just two points from his seven Championship matches at the helm and are bottom of the table, four points from safety. They now have a two-week break before returning to action with a trip to Blackburn on Monday, 6th February. "As tough a decision as this was, the board felt it necessary to give us the best possible chance of remaining a Championship club next season," said Wigan chief executive Malachy Brannigan. Wigan confirmed that two members of Toure's staff, Kevin Betsy and Ashvir Johal, have also left the club. The remaining coaching staff will take interim charge of the the first team and Wigan say they are "working quickly to identify and appoint a new manager". "I'd like to thank Kolo, along with Kevin and Ash, for their efforts during their time at the football club," added Brannigan. "We know that this time of year is a key period for any football club, ourselves included. "We will now work swiftly and effectively to ensure the right person is appointed as the next permanent manager of Wigan Athletic, with the immediate objective of remaining in the second tier for next season." Toure had been on Brendan Rodgers' staff at both Celtic and Leicester before leaving the Foxes for the Wigan position on 29th November. His reign started with a 1-1 draw at Millwall but they then lost to Sheffield United, Middlesbrough, Sunderland and Hull City, the latter three all by 4-1. After they were knocked out of the FA Cup in a third-round replay by Luton, Toure admitted he was still learning about his players. His final game in charge was a 2-0 home defeat by Luton in the Championship on Saturday. Wigan are now looking for their fifth permanent manager in the last three years. Following Paul Cook's resignation while the club were in administration in August 2020, John Sheridan took over on a month-to-month basis before leaving in November that year. Richardson initially took over on a temporary basis and guided Wigan to safety in League One that season before being appointed permanent manager in April 2021. He led them to the League One title on the final day of the 2021-22 season but was sacked on 10 November after they fell into the Championship relegation zone.

Sean Dyche: Everton set to appoint ex-Burnley boss as new manager..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/13257/production/_128432487_gettyimages-1239937805.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/E437/production/_128432485_gettyimages-1391410176.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/52E7/production/_128432212_dyche.jpgSean Dyche is expected to be named as Everton's new manager, succeeding the sacked Frank Lampard. Dyche and former Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa were the two main contenders after holding talks with Everton's hierarchy. Bielsa was initially understood to be the favoured choice of owner Farhad Moshiri but the former Burnley boss is now in pole position. The Toffees want their new manager in place before the weekend. Bielsa, 67, expressed reservations about taking over in mid-season and whether the squad would fit his high-intensity and physically demanding style. There were also doubts over the expensive package his appointment would require. Talks did not bring any resolution, leaving Dyche as the front-runner, although it remains to be seen what agreement will be reached on length of contract, with the 51-year-old unlikely to simply want a short-term deal. Everton are next in action on 4 February, when they host Premier League leaders Arsenal at Goodison Park. Dyche also impressed Everton and the manager sacked by Burnley now looks certain to be given the task of rescuing their troubled season. Lampard was dismissed with the Toffees lying 19th in the Premier League table with only 15 points from 20 games. In a decade at Burnley, Dyche guided the Clarets to two promotions from the Championship and two top-half Premier League finishes. Dyche also helped Burnley achieve their first European qualification in 51 years after leading them to seventh place in the top flight in 2017-18. Moshiri will be making his seventh managerial appointment since buying into the club in February 2016.

Sabri Lamouchi: Cardiff City appoint third manager of season..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/5624/production/_128425022_gettyimages-1276693409.jpgCardiff City have appointed former Nottingham Forest boss Sabri Lamouchi as their third manager of the season. Lamouchi, 51, will be joined at the Cardiff City Stadium by ex-Bluebirds defender Sol Bamba, who will assist his former Ivory Coast national team manager. Cardiff sacked Steve Morison in September while his successor Mark Hudson lasted just 118 days. Caretaker manager Dean Whitehead will remain part of the backroom staff. Lamouchi's remit will be to keep Cardiff in the Championship, with the Welsh club hovering just one place above the relegation zone in 21st position and without a win in 11 games in all competitions. "His appointment has come about following a period of serious consideration and reflection as to what is the best for our club," Cardiff owner Vincent Tan told the club's website. "I'm confident Sabri will be able to deliver what we know this squad is capable of achieving and I look forward to the games that we have ahead of us. "I'd also like to welcome back Sol, a sentiment I know that [fans] will share." It is understood the Cardiff board felt experience of managing in the Championship was essential as they sought Hudson's replacement. Lamouchi was in charge of Forest when they were pipped to the play-offs by Cardiff and Swansea City on goal difference on the final day of the 2019-20 season, his first campaign at the helm. He was replaced by Chris Hughton in October 2020 following a poor start to the following season. Since then the Frenchman has managed Qatari side Al-Duhail, having previously worked in Ligue 1 as manager of Rennes, steering them to fifth before taking the role at the City Ground. The former midfielder had a distinguished playing career during which he won silverware with Auxerre, Monaco, Parma, Marseille and El Jaish in Qatar.

Shaun Maloney: Wigan Athletic appoint former winger as manager..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/5841/production/_128439522_28thjan2023shaunmaloneywiganathleticmanager-9.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/3131/production/_128439521_shutterstock_editorial_12896988bp.jpgWigan Athletic have appointed former winger Shaun Maloney as manager on a three-and-a-half-year deal. The 40-year-old replaces Kolo Toure, who was sacked after just nine games in charge on Thursday. The Latics are bottom of the Championship table, four points adrift of safety. "I have amazing memories here and created some fabulous moments with teams and with fans, and I'm excited to get started," Maloney said. "The feeling that I have from those times as a player is a big factor for me. I have been here previously and have always felt a great warmth from the supporters. "I want the fans to see a team that is giving absolutely everything, fighting to get better and the supporters need to feel that. The connection is there, we just need to reawaken it." The former Scotland international made 91 appearances across four seasons with the Latics and was part of the team that won the FA Cup in 2013. He moved into coaching with Celtic, where he had started his playing career, before joining the staff of ex-Wigan boss Roberto Martinez with Belgium. Hibernian gave him his first job in management in December 2021 but he was sacked last April after winning just six of his 19 games in charge. He now becomes Wigan's third manager of the season after Leam Richardson was sacked in November and replaced by rookie boss Toure, who failed to win any of his nine games. Graham Barrow has left Exeter City to return to the club as assistant manager. The 68-year-old previously spent eight years at DW Stadium between 2009 and 2017. Maloney's first game in charge will be a trip to promotion hopefuls Blackburn a week on Monday, 6 February.

Sean Dyche: Everton's new boss says it is his job to make his players 'shine'.. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/02FC/production/_128446700_gettyimages-1229378670.jpgSean Dyche says it is his job to make the quality players in Everton's squad "shine" after being appointed manager. The Toffees sacked Frank Lampard last week with the club 19th in the Premier League and two points from safety. Dyche, 51, who joins on a two-and-a-half-year contract until June 2025, had been out of work since being dismissed by Burnley last April. "Our aim is to put out a team that works, that fights and wears the badge with pride," said Dyche. "The connection with the fans can then grow very quickly because they're so passionate. "There is quality in this squad. But we have to make them shine. That's the job of me and my staff."

Leeds United: Jesse Marsch sacked after less than a year in charge..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/60E4/production/_128540842_gettyimages-1246837704.jpgLeeds manager Jesse Marsch has been sacked after less than a year in charge. Leeds lost 1-0 at Nottingham Forest on Sunday, their seventh Premier League games without a win. They are 17th in the table - above the relegation zone only on goal difference - and last won in the league on 5 November. Leeds finished 17th last season after American Marsch succeeded Marcelo Bielsa in February. A club statement read: "We would like to thank Jesse and his backroom staff for their efforts and wish them well for the future. "The process of appointing a new head coach is under way and we will continue to keep supporters up to date throughout the coming days." Coaches Rene Maric, Cameron Toshack and Pierre Barrieu have also been sacked. Leeds play Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday and again at Elland Road on Sunday. Marsch's side won only four of their 20 league matches this season, with six draws and 10 defeats. Defeat by Nottingham Forest in his final match in charge left him with a 25% win-rate after 32 Premier League games as Leeds boss. A former coach of RB Leipzig, New York Red Bulls and Red Bull Salzburg, he took over with Leeds 16th in the table. They avoided relegation to the Championship thanks to a 2-1 win at Brentford on the final day of last season. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/D614/production/_128540845_bbc-sport-h2h-square--66d2725c-f9b6-4ea8-ac05-679c556bb73e.pngichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/6476/production/_127281752_gettyimages-1243845428.jpg

Nathan Jones: Southampton sack manager after just three months in charge..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/240/cpsprodpb/179F8/production/_128606769_jones2_getty.jpgSouthampton have sacked manager Nathan Jones after just 95 days in charge of the Premier League club. Former Luton Town boss Jones, 49, leaves with Saints bottom of the table after Saturday's loss to 10-men Wolves. The Welshman, who is Southampton's shortest-serving boss in the Premier League era, lost nine of 14 matches after taking the job on 10 November. That record included eight defeats in nine Premier League games and four successive home losses at St Mary's. He is the eighth Premier League manager to be sacked this season. First-team coaches Chris Cohen and Alan Sheehan have also left the club, while lead coach Ruben Selles will take charge of Saturday's Premier League match at Chelsea.
