'Howe deserves all the credit he has got and is getting'..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/4672/live/5b1254a0-fdfb-11ed-bf5a-4b80105f920f.jpgAlan Shearer reiterated his plaudits for Eddie Howe and said the Newcastle United boss is his manager of the season. Speaking on Match of the Day, the former Magpies and England striker said: "The way he has galvanised the city - he mentions the unity but he has created that. "[From] Where they were 18 months ago when there was a real chance of them relegated, for them now to finish fourth and have Champions League football. "Some of the players he has improved who were already there, he has done an outstanding job and he deserves all the credit he has got and is getting."

Champions League 'a free hit' for Newcastleichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/4a27/live/4228d8a0-fc80-11ed-b640-0f6b88a64bd2.jpgStriker Callum Wilson feels Newcastle United can have a "nothing-to-lose mentality" when they head into the Champions League next season. The Magpies confirmed their spot in Europe's elite club competition with their draw against Leicester City on Monday and it will be the first time since 2002-03 they have competed against the continent's best. Speaking on the Footballer's Football Podcast, which he co-hosts with West Ham forward Michail Antonio, Wilson said: "You have to have belief. We're not just taking part. We've beaten a lot of good teams this season. "There's going to be a lot of good teams in the Champions League, but Premier League teams would beat them, so why not? "We're going with a nothing-to-lose mentality. No-one's expecting us to win - so it's a free hit." After guiding them into the Champions League places in his first full season on Tyneside, Eddie Howe has been nominated for Premier League manager of the season - an accolade Wilson feels would be fully deserved if he won. "It definitely has to be Eddie Howe," said the England international. "There's not bias there, but taking the team from a relegation battle to the Champions League, you have to give it to him." However, Antonio said he thinks there will be tough competition with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, whose side are on course to win the Treble. "Pep – if he wins two more, or even if he gets the Champions League alone - he is manager of the season," said Antonio. "No-one's surprised by him winning the Premier League any more. "I'm saying Eddie Howe, unless Pep wins the Champions League." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/9dc9/live/b4131860-d9e2-11ed-8df1-d74cbf1089d7.png

Thanks for the NUFC updates. Really interesting…to me! I love that kit, immediately recognisable and as a basic design pretty much unchanged since the 60s. Like Man City their kit remains much as it was, something I really like. They don’t see the need to vary or ‘jazz up’ a good kit with unnecessary variations. Other clubs could learn. Although tbf it seems that many more clubs are keeping to their traditional shirt without messing it about. FWIW I read an article on the BBC site saying that Newcastle are only expecting to make two big signings this summer because they are aware that they need to be careful about the Financial Fair Play rules and do not want to fall foul of those rules. They will need other signings but these are expected to be towards the lower end of the market. I’d say that was a good plan knowing EHs decent record at being able to improve players that he trains. I hope they do well next year although I think it will be far harder than this year. The expectation amongst the fans and pundits will have risen and I would imagine Spurs, Chelsea will be much better and Man U, with the right No.9, could put in a much stronger challenge for the title. It won’t be easy but I do expect Newcastle to be within the top 8 which will still be a fantastic effort. (Although after this season I don’t think the Newcastle owners will settle for less next season!) Pressure will be on, again.

I have always liked the NUFC kit, there's something about black and white, al la Juventus, Notts County, St.Mirren, Fulham & Udinese to name a few. But with NUFC it was the big bustling side-burned and bow legged Malcolm Macdonald who scored 138 goals in 257 games for the magpies from 1971-1976. His total career stats are: Played 502, Goals 266, Clubs Fulham, Luton, NUFC, Arsenal, Djurgårdens and England, injury cut short his 10 year career... P.S..Could you edit page 1 to read 'Newcatle United News' instead of Eddie Howe as it would make it easier to collate news there, no problem if you don't want to.

Sandro Tonali: The 'football masochist' who has signed for Newcastle United..By Mina Rzouki, Italian football writer.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/17E60/production/_130188879_gettyimages-1234947361.jpg Sandro Tonali has become the most expensive Italian footballer everAt a time when football belongs more to the capitalists and less to the romantics, Serie A still boasts a few love stories. Zlatan Ibrahimovic just had to go back and retire at the club he loved the most. Romelu Lukaku couldn't tear himself away from the Nerazzurri stripes. Italian players have regularly turned down bigger and better deals to remain playing in the peninsula for their beloved clubs. Sandro Tonali made the ultimate gesture of any footballer when he took a pay cut to ensure his stay at Milan in 2021, sticking with the team he supported as a child. There is no greater love than an Italian boy and his favourite club. Or so we thought. That love story is now over after Newcastle United made the 23-year-old midfielder the world's most expensive Italian by signing him for a fee in the region of £55m from AC Milan. "I know what I did to get to this shirt and I would never make the mistake of leaving," he once told Corriere della Sera. Milan was the dream. He comes from Sant'Angelo, a tiny town in the province of Lodi with only 13,000 inhabitants, most of whom, like Tonali, support Milan. Former Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso was his idol. Unsurprising when you consider that spirit and grit are the adjectives often used to describe Santangiolinos. From an early age Sandrino, as he's affectionately referred to by those who watched him grow up, showed his potential. Combative, with a great sense of positioning and an innate understanding of the game, Tonali had what it took to break through. Football is always fun for children, but Tonali seemed to especially revel in the tough moments. A footballing masochist, he wouldn't delight in the game unless he had to suffer for the win. Arriving at Brescia, Tonali began to capture the attention of all of Italy. Who was this kid referred to as the heir of Andrea Pirlo? "Tonali doesn't look like me as a player. He is much more complete, both defensively and offensively," explained Pirlo when asked about the youngster. It wasn't Pirlo whom Tonali sought to model his game after, but rather his team-mate, former Rangers midfielder Gattuso. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/DF3D/production/_130194175_gettyimages-1494075383.jpgIn a short film released by AC Milan on the player called 'Sandro Tonali - A Rossonero dream come true', one anecdote revealed that a mug with Gattuso's image printed on it was among Tonali's most prized possessions. When his mum accidentally broke it, he painstakingly ensured each piece was glued back together. Like Gattuso, Tonali possesses a combative style, spirit of sacrifice and ability to cover ground. Most importantly however, he is an old school professional who cares about the game. Prior to the Champions League semi-final against Inter, Tonali shut out the world to concentrate. Stricter diet, constant training, fool duties were rescheduled, no social media, no birthday celebrations - just a slice of cake and a candle. There was a job to do and a game to be played. Fans of the club have lost both Paolo Maldini, their legendary former captain who was one of the directors in charge of rebuilding this great club, and now Tonali - the future emblem - in one month. Milan seem to have opted for a strategy that distances themselves from sentiment and romance to focus on business. This is a depressing time for the many Italian clubs who have built impressive footballing projects - as shown by so many Italian teams featuring in the latter stages of Europe's top competitions - but who simply cannot afford to retain their talents long enough to compete more consistently with the cashed-up elite. As for Newcastle, this is the time to sit back and enjoy watching their own footballing project unfold. In Tonali, they have purchased a highly motivated and professional player who loves nothing more than winning back possession and supporting the team, whether that be offensively or defensively. He will train rigorously, he will focus only the game and he will ensure that one day, he will have his own image printed on a mug for a youngster to treasure.

'We're in the process of trying to get deals done'..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/c55b/live/302e7bf0-232c-11ee-95f3-8525f9f64d30.jpgEddie Howe said Newcastle are "trying to get deals done" this summer but "to sign good players is very difficult". The Magpies boss also said he doesn't want to lose any players currently in his squad but admitted that is out of his control. Speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle after Saturday's pre-season win over Gateshead, Howe said: "I'm waiting for news on a daily basis to see what's happening. "We want to bring the right players in to elevate our squad - but to sign good players is very difficult. "We're in that process of talking, negotiating and trying to get deals done. "'Financial fair play' are words I don't really like the sound of - but it's there in every conversation we have at the moment because it's relevant and impacting what we can and can't do. "We have to be creative and sometimes think outside of the box with our transfers because we have a budget we have to stick to. "I don't want to lose anyone from the squad we currently have; I want to build, and add quality players. "But, of course, you're not always in control of that, so we'll wait and see if a player could leave - but certainly it wouldn't be something I want to happen." Howe wants more in at Newcastle but transfer reality is tough..by Harry De Cosemo, BBC Sport.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/5c20/live/d1ffe7c0-248a-11ee-af07-c7759bcbb0fd.jpgNewcastle boss Eddie Howe made clear how tough this transfer window would be back in May, and it hasn’t been plain sailing. After the win over Gateshead on Saturday, Howe stressed the need for added reinforcements - having only signed AC Milan’s Sandro Tonali so far this summer. But he also said nothing was close. Perspective is needed, though. It is all about quality over quantity, in spite of the need for added depth. A wide forward, centre-back and left-back are on Howe’s wishlist and the club are working hard to acquire targets, but they will cost a lot of money if they are to improve a Champions League side. Newcastle are now at a point where Financial Fair Play is a huge consideration. Last summer, they pushed the boat out for Alexander Isak having previously decided he was too expensive. In January, an opportunity arose to sign Anthony Gordon from Everton. The reality is those decisions have brought the FFP boundaries closer. There is money for new signings, which will be added to by player sales, but as Howe said, Newcastle will need to get creative. They like Harvey Barnes but a deal will not happen quickly, and Napoli’s Kvicha Kvaratskhelia is unattainable right now, despite reports. Howe’s comments have been taken by some to mean he is frustrated with the hierarchy. While he’d like more incomings, it is the financial picture which is the issue, not the club’s desire to back him.

Harvey Barnes: Newcastle close to agreeing a deal with Leicester City for midfielder..By Simon Stone, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/48A0/production/_130429581_gettyimages-1489393075.jpg Harvey Barnes won his one England cap in a friendly against Wales on 8 October 2020Newcastle are close to agreeing a deal with Leicester City for midfielder Harvey Barnes. Negotiations between the two clubs have been ongoing for weeks. A fee is still to be agreed but there is growing confidence the deal will be concluded by the end of the week, which would allow Barnes to link up with Eddie Howe's squad. It was always likely the 25-year-old would move on following Leicester's relegation to the Championship. Barnes is keen to add to his single England cap and also wants to test himself on the Champions League stage. The move should be made easier by Allan Saint-Maximin's impending move from St James' Park to Saudi Arabia. Barnes scored 45 goals in 187 appearances in all competitions for the Foxes after progressing through the club's Academy. He made his senior debut off the bench in Leicester's 5-0 defeat by Porto in the Champions League as an 18-year-old on 7th December 2016.

Harvey Barnes: Newcastle sign England winger from Leicester City for £38m..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/07B4/production/_130427910_harveybarnes.jpg Harvey Barnes made his Leicester debut as a substitute in a Champions League game against Porto aged 18 in December 2016Newcastle United have signed England winger Harvey Barnes from Leicester City for a fee of about £38m. The 25-year-old, capped once by England, has signed a five-year contract with the Magpies. He is the club's third signing of the summer following the arrivals of forward Yankuba Minteh and Italian international midfielder Sandro Tonali. "I think it's an attacker's dream to come into a team like this," Barnes said. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/12213/production/_130495247_gettyimages-1565062902.jpg"I'm delighted. It's an amazing club and for me it's a massive opportunity to come and be involved in a successful team that's doing exciting things, so I'm absolutely buzzing to be here." Newcastle finished fourth in the Premier League last season and in 2023-24 will be playing in the Champions League for the first time since 2003-04. "Harvey is an exciting talent who I have admired for a long time so I'm delighted to welcome him to Newcastle United," said Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe. "He is strong, quick and very good technically, and he showed last season in particular that he has an eye for goal from wide positions." Barnes is the latest player to leave the Foxes after their relegation from the Premier League. He made 146 Premier League appearances for Leicester, scoring 35 goals and creating 25 assists. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/24/5fac47a8-cde1-4e99-a8ab-33e2c181eff9.jpg

Newcastle 3-3 Aston Villa: What we learned from friendly in Philadelphia..By Alex Howell, BBC Sport in Philadelphia.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/5DAB/production/_130497932_gettyimages-1566006739.jpg Ollie Watkins scored Aston Villa's opening goal after seven minutes
Newcastle United and Aston Villa played out an exciting 3-3 draw in Philadelphia as both sides continued their preparation for the new season and return to European football. The Magpies have qualified for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years, while Villa will be in the Europa Conference League. Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Buendia put Villa 2-0 ahead inside 11 minutes in the Premier League Summer Series match, before Elliot Anderson and Alexander Isak got Newcastle back on level terms. Buendia added a second after the break, with England striker Callum Wilson equalising in the 55th minute. The game saw Newcastle's new £38m winger Harvey Barnes make his debut among a raft of new signings on display for both sides at the Lincoln Financial Field. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/9C2B/production/_130497993_gettyimages-1566537864-1.jpgHarvey Barnes (right) made his debut just hours after his move from Leicester was confirmedEngland winger Barnes made his debut the same day his £38m transfer from Leicester was confirmed. The 25-year-old came on for the final 20 minutes of the match but as in most pre-season friendlies, the end of the game was a bit chaotic. "You saw today he has the athleticism we require - some really sharp moments with bursts of speed," said Howe. "That cut-in from the left is probably his trademark. We're excited by what he could bring." Tonali, when he came off at half-time, and Barnes after the final whistle did extra running work, so there will be a lot more to come from both of these signings once they are up to full fitness.

Allan Saint-Maximin: Winger leaves Newcastle for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/11103/production/_130419896_gettyimages-1491354232.jpg Allan Saint-Maximin has made 124 appearances for Newcastle in all competitions, scoring 13 goalsAllan Saint-Maximin has left Newcastle United, joining Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli for an undisclosed fee. The French forward, 26, becomes the fourth high profile player to join the Saudi Arabian champions this summer. They have also signed Riyad Mahrez, Roberto Firmino and Edouard Mendy from Premier League clubs. Saint-Maximin, who joined the Magpies from Nice in 2019 and scored 12 Premier League goals in 111 games, has signed a four-year deal. On Saturday, Saint-Maximin confirmed he was leaving Newcastle with an emotional social media post, saying his "greatest trophy" was playing for the club. "We pick the best, and he's one of them," Al-Ahli posted on messaging platform X, previously known as Twitter. Al-Ahli are run by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), which also owns Newcastle. Reports have claimed rival Premier League clubs are concerned that Saint-Maximin's transfer fee, which has not been disclosed, could be inflated in order to help Newcastle comply with Financial Fair Play regulations. But manager Howe has said the transfer to Saudi "will satisfy the Premier League", while the league's chief executive Richard Masters insists its rules are "robust". Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth said last year that the club must be open to selling players in order to comply with spending restrictions. This summer, Howe has been able to bring in Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali from AC Milan for £55m and English winger Harvey Barnes from Leicester City for £38m.
