Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, speaking to Match of the Day: "We created a lot of good chances and I am frustrated we haven't won. But it was much better. It looked like we were snatching at chances. "I have to credit the players because it is a difficult environment to play in and it is a much better defensive display from us too. Big steps forward. "I think there has been a reaction. We stood up to the physical test and were technically very good. We are trying to break barriers and have an outstanding season. I think we are capable of more and we have some tough fixtures to come. "I think Anthony [Gordon] handled the occasion very well. I think his all-round game was very good. He will be disappointed with the penalty. Credit to Jordan Pickford for the save." Will Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson be back after the international break? "We hope so. They are two huge players for us. When you take any focal point out of a team it has an impact. Would it have made the difference today? I'm not sure but we are looking forward to having them back."

Here are some of your comments:
Newcastle fansPaul: Defensively better but we didn’t convert our possession into goals. Gordon played well but missed a pen and a very easy chance. Only a point is disappointing. There’s no excuse for us not having adequate cover for Isak and Wilson as we spent very little in the past two transfer windows. Our transfer policy needs sorting out. Andy: Against a combative Everton side it was always a tough ask of Gordon to keep playing the central striker role even with his pace. We are strongest in midfield rotation, surely Howe could use Joelinton as a hybrid forward when needed. A draw was a fair result, but had we won Everton could of had no complaints. Cohesive team performance with no end product. Jon: Signs of continued progress from the City game - energetic, more fluid in midfield through Tonali, Joelinton and Bruno, and the press gave Everton trouble. But we lacked any real edge in the final third, and still look vulnerable on the counter. Poor summer transfer window - we're a forward and a defender short of competing where we want to. Alex: Newcastle lack any sort of creativity from midfield. Not one player from the midfield three is able to take the game by the scruff and win the game themselves. Too much reliance on Isak/Gordon. Howe needs to figure out a way to get goals from midfield. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/10/06/15/90521421-13930001-image-a-1_1728225337416.jpg

Match report by Steve Sutcliffe, BBC Sport journalistDanny Welbeck’s first-half goal proved decisive as Brighton condemned Newcastle to their first Premier League defeat at home since January. The result lifts the Seagulls up to fifth in the table while the Magpies remain eighth. Brighton had spent most of the opening period on the back foot when Welbeck’s quick thinking made the difference. The former England forward, who turns 34 next month, played a clever one-two with Georginio Rutter before placing the ball in the bottom right corner with the visitors' first effort on goal of the afternoon. Welbeck, who was withdrawn on a stretcher late on after appearing to injure his back, has now scored five goals in eight appearances in the top flight this term. However, Brighton’s victory was also down to some resilient defending coupled with profligate finishing from the hosts. Eddie Howe's side carved out several promising openings with Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon both going close but they were unable to find a way past visiting goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

We conceded with the first shot they had in the game. It's one of those moments where you go 'that sums football up'. That can happen sometimes when you're so dominant. One lapse in concentration cost us. "I didn't feel we needed to totally rip up what we were doing. A goal looked like it was coming. The last 20 minutes was frustrating as we didn't put pressure on their goal. Credit to Brighton to the way we defended, but we're frustrated. "We're going through a phase where we're not scoring, but the positive is we're creating chances. "We can't feel sorry for ourselves, it's back to hard work on the training pitch."

We asked for your thoughts after Saturday's Premier League game between Newcastle and Brighton.
Here are some of your comments:
Newcastle fansWard: Unfortunately we lacked a cutting edge and the guile needed to unlock a resolute defence. Our set pieces and corners are disappointing with little variation or creativity. This is important with the amount of box pressure we can generate. Mike: It was very similar to the Everton game were we dominated but couldn't find the net. Again we created good chances against a resolute Brighton team and again we couldn't finish. It's so frustrating to watch, as long as we work hard and believe goals will eventually come. Tom: Probably one of the most one sided first halves I have ever seen at St James Park. Newcastle should have been at least a couple ahead by half time. Newcastle's luck summed up with the Isak shot that hit Murphy. Shooting practice in training this week might be helpful. Right winger and a forward who can score goals are urgently required in the January sales.

Since the takeover it's just been up and up. Me and the gaffer are a perfect match in terms of style of play. I love it here. "I'm very happy here, I like living here, the team is very suited to me - and I'm here to win a trophy. The short story is we need to win a trophy. Winning a trophy here would be unbelievable because the fans have waited so long. To be part of that team who finally does it is a massive goal of mine. "We (my family and I) have always felt settled because Geordies are so easy-going and so welcoming, very easy to speak to and always want the best for you. It's a very easy place to come and live, I think. I feel very connected to everyone - teammates, fans and everyone involved." Gordon - who was linked with a move to Liverpool during the summer - joined the Magpies in January 2023 and has made 74 appearances, scoring 15 goals and registering 11 assists. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/2f7f/live/95709000-0915-11ef-bee9-6125e244a4cd.jpgWe asked for your immediate reaction to Anthony Gordon signing a new long-term deal with Newcastle.
Here are some of your comments:Sandra: I am so glad that Antony Gordon has signed long term for Newcastle. He always plays well and often does a lot of work on the field with no acknowledgement for his hard work. Cliff: It’s no surprise that Anthony loves it here. Every player who spends any time in Newcastle/Northumberland finds the slower pace of life ideal for them and their families. This is how you reward star players. In the past he would have been sold but the club now has a positive attitude and lofty goals, fully endorsed by fans and owners alike. Jason: Glad Gordon is putting his future here. He is a good player hopefully he can turn into a great at the Toon.

Sunday 27th October 2024 - Premier League
Chelsea 2 Newcastle United 1 (Isak 32)
i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/10/28/01/91342185-14007999-Alexander_Isak_got_his_goal_but_was_sloppy_in_possession_and_lac-a-2_1730078880312.jpg
Match report by BBC SportCole Palmer scored his seventh goal of the season as Chelsea beat Newcastle to continue their impressive start. Palmer struck early in the second half when his clean strike from just inside the penalty area beat Nick Pope at his near post. Nicolas Jackson's fifth league goal of the campaign had given the Blues an 18th-minute lead, when he fired home from Pedro Neto's square ball after Palmer's delicious pass set Chelsea away. But Newcastle were level 14 minutes later thanks to Alexander Isak's tap-in. Isak perhaps should have levelled towards the end of the game after rounding goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, but his attempt to walk the ball in was thwarted by Chelsea defenders. Chelsea thought they had a late penalty when Christopher Nkunku went down inside the box under a challenge. It was initially given but the decision was overturned following a review by the video assistant referee after it appeared Nkunku slipped. In the end, Palmer's seventh goal in just nine Premier League games secured the three points that for a short while elevated Chelsea to fourth in the table. They dropped back to fifth after Arsenal's draw against Liverpool later on Sunday, but Chelsea's presence in the higher reaches underlines their impressive form under boss Enzo Maresca so far this season. They have won five of their nine Premier League games under the former Leicester manager, losing only to Manchester City and Liverpool. Newcastle, meanwhile, are 12th and are now winless in their last five league outings.

We gave a lot to the match and contributed a lot, in terms of endeavour and attitude. "I'm probably disappointed with the two goals we conceded, especially the second which we thought was self-inflicted, but we gave everything to try and get something." On whether Newcastle deserved something: "I felt we did for the character shown in coming back. I thought there were a lot of positive things, a lot of very good football. I felt as though we were chasing the game, we were moments away from scoring at any moment." On what is missing at the moment: "I think it is just the final bit in both boxes, where we didn't defend the two moments well enough and I felt we had enough positive actions to score more. "Hopefully the goal will go a long way to ridding ourselves of that. No one can change it but us and we will continue to attack games and attack teams." On whether their current run is emotionally draining: "I think you go through all types of cycles as a manager. You understand the difficult moments and you just have to ride through them knowing you'll come back again. The attitude of the players gives me the most heart and that is the most important thing." On how many changes he can make for Wednesday's cup game against Chelsea: "We are probably not in the position where we can make as many as we would like. We will try and make the right decisions for both games. We want to try and go as far as we can."

We asked for your thoughts after Sunday's Premier League game between Chelsea and Newcastle United.
Here are some of your comments:
Newcastle fansChris: Nick Pope needs to dive rather than spreading himself all the time. Someone of his size should be catching every cross, rather than punching it. One point was deserved from this game as we were just too sloppy with our passes. We need more work from our forwards because we are not pressing enough. Bluey: We played well enough for at least a point. The team are arguing amongst themselves and the harmony of old is lost. There is a bit of a concern now, as we drop down the table. Mr Howe needs to sort it out otherwise he will feel the heat. Paul: It looks like this team is losing confidence and needs a rebuild job. We have to get rid of Almiron, Murphy and Wilson. Isak and Barnes are on notice. The tactics also have to be questioned because we cannot string more than two passes together. When did we last score from a corner? What are these coaches getting paid for? Everything requires a rethink. Richard: The fall in Trippier's form and influence has been disastrous, combined with Botman's injury. As is so often with this club, a lack of cohesion at the top infects the players on the pitch. Everything I have been talking about since we gave Liverpool a win at home last season has come true. I take no pleasure in being right! Eddie's days are sadly numbered. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/10/28/01/91342151-14007999-It_was_not_Bruno_Guimaraes_finest_day_at_the_office_as_Newcastle-a-4_1730078880313.jpg

Wednesday 30th October 2024 - League Cup - Last 16
Newcastle United 2 (Isak 23, Disasi 26 og) Chelsea 0
i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/10/30/21/91484993-14022225-image-a-9_1730324668531.jpg
Match report by Alex Brotherton, BBC Sport journalistNewcastle United cruised past Chelsea to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. An Alexander Isak strike, quickly followed by an Axel Disasi own goal, were enough to avenge their 2-1 defeat against the same opponents in the Premier League on Sunday. The game started at a frantic pace with Newcastle's Joelinton striking the post at one end before Renato Veiga's effort was deflected just wide at the other. Swedish striker Isak, who had netted just twice this season, opened the scoring from close range in the 23rd minute after Sandro Tonali intercepted a loose pass just outside the penalty area. The hosts doubled their advantage three minutes later when Joe Willock flicked on Isak's cross and Chelsea defender Disasi turned the ball into his own net. Enzo Maresca's side struggled to cope with Newcastle's pressing and were fortunate to go into half-time with just a two-goal deficit. Sean Longstaff thought he had headed in a third midway through the second half but the linesman's flag ruled it out for offside. Chelsea enjoyed more of the ball after the break, but were left frustrated when Joao Felix poked wide when one on one with Nick Pope. Substitute Noni Madueke made a decent impact, but boss Maresca, having left out Nicolas Jackson, also opted against introducing key man Cole Palmer from the bench. Newcastle substitute William Osula came agonisingly close to a third goal, but his low drive eight minutes from time struck the foot of the post. Newcastle have taken just 12 points from their opening nine Premier League games this season, but the crowd at St James' Park showed their appreciation following an impressive performance. The 2022-23 Carabao Cup runners-up are looking to win a major domestic trophy for the first time since lifting the FA Cup in 1955. Newcastle will face Brentford at St James' Park in the last eight, with the tie to take place during the week commencing 16th December.

We got our pressing attitude bang on and got a lot of regains high up the pitch, which is where the first goal came from. Delighted with the contribution from the whole squad." On learning from Sunday's match against Chelsea: "You always learn from every game and try to put things into practice in the next match. Playing the same opponent yes, but a very different team, I'm sure they also took things from Sunday for tonight. "I just felt there was a better feel in our out of possession delivery tonight. We were much better on the details and turning the regains into chances going forwards. "Second half it wasn't an easy game to manage. They were bringing on some good players from the bench to add to the quality they already had on the pitch but I thought we defended really well." On making changes with a quick turnaround: "You have the game on the horizon, so that is what you are looking at. Two days to recover before another one, so we will have to wait and find out if we managed it well. "We also wanted to look after one or two players who we thought needed protection, some players deserved to play and stake their claim for more regular time and they did their chances no harm." On the draw: "Copy and paste in terms of what I say each time. I want a home draw because this place is an amazing venue to play in and that was shown again tonight. "Sold out, great atmosphere, good performance and I hope everyone feels a bit better about themselves now."

We asked for your views on Wednesday's EFL Cup match between Newcastle and Chelsea.
Here are some of your comments:Geoff: Much needed win which we deserved. However some woeful finishing and wasted chances made it seem harder. Still lacking scorers. Sometimes tonight we were through on goal but incredibly missed the target. However a good win which should stand us in good stead for the season. Mark: More like it from Newcastle. Good energy early on and great game management in the second half. Strong performances throughout and the Tonali-Longstaff midfield added solidity. Subs well timed to close out a faltering Chelsea comeback. BC: A welcome victory but hardly a convincing performance. If you were awarded points for poor passing and lack of control we’d be world champions. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/10/29/14/91418849-14015577-image-a-105_1730213112878.jpg

Saturday 2nd November 2024 - Premier League
Newcastle United 1 (Isak 12) Arsenal 0

Match report by Jess Anderson, BBC Sport journalistAlexander Isak scored the only goal as Arsenal dropped points in the Premier League against Newcastle at St James’ Park. The Swede’s 12th-minute header came after the Gunners failed to clear their lines and Anthony Gordon sent a sumptuous ball into the area. Arsenal had started the game well but once Isak found the net they struggled to get a handle on proceedings and lacked creativity in the final third. Mikel Arteta made changes in the second half to try to break down Newcastle’s resolute defence but his side registered just one shot on target across the 90 minutes. Victory for the Magpies moves them up to eighth in the league while Arsenal are third and will find themselves eight points adrift of Manchester City in top spot should Pep Guardiola’s side beat Bournemouth later on Saturday.

It has been a difficult week with the fixtures but the players have done really well. "There was a better feeling in training after the Chelsea win, as if pressure lifted slightly. Today's performance was built on hard, work , desire and a lot of really good defending in the second half. I thought we looked good." On the winning goal: "I wouldn't say it is a trademark goal for Alex but really pleased to see it. Anthony can give you that on his natural right hand side and it was a great ball. "It was always going to take a moment like that as it was a game of few chances." On his side's performance: "It was 95 minutes of concentration and consistency in our attitude. We managed and controlled some very good players pretty well today. "It's three points but it means so much because we hadn't won for a while in the Premier League. I'm sure it will do us the world of good."

We asked for your thoughts after Saturday's Premier League game between Newcastle and Arsenal.
Here are some of your comments:
Newcastle fans:Craig: The performance the fans have been waiting for this season. We controlled the game with and without the ball. Seemed confident to play the ball out from the back, creating space out wide. Fully deserved win. Will enjoy this one for a while. Jack: Unbelievable performance from the whole squad. Defended incredibly well and played some great football. Confidence is just starting to come back. Well worth staying up watching it in New Zealand. Dave: Superb performance, every duel won. Hunting in packs without the ball, intelligent when in possession, relentless pressing. Newcastle in this form and at SJP are potentially the toughest fixture of the season. Cliff: An all round performance but this time we took a chance and we never looked like conceding which is exactly the type of team we want to be. Yes it’s great to win 5-3 but a solid midfield and defence is of the utmost importance. One-nil to the Toon sounds great and may there be many more of them, with the occasional goal fest. This game is the blueprint. i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2024/09/11/newcastle-united-topic-preview.jpg

Newcastle United have placed Cameroon winger Bryan Mbeumo on their wanted list, with Brentford setting a price tag of about £50m for the 25-year-old.
