Well it is the Championship so they all probably are! Yes, likely to be several and when they are caught they are punished. It’s just that the punishment doesn’t always fit the crime and the EFL has the turning circle of the and works at a snail’s pace. Charlton fans must be severely jarred off about the timing of the Sheffield Wednesday punishment. Of course Wycombe will likely go down but it is a great story and I rate Ainsworth as a manager and think he squeezes everything out of his players. Not being a betting person I don’t know how the bookies use punishments or when they eventually pay out when punishments or appeals are pending. UTG! edit: That’s very clever. I typed the word and when it appeared it’s in the form of an emoji! It's a brilliant bit of programming by Admin. Edit. I lied.

Perhaps but I bet Ainsworth has a few tricks up his sleeve. So likely to go down but I bet they’ll dish out some shocks along the way. UTG! At the risk of getting Bamber all cross (again)... the odds on Wycombe being relegated are now generally 4-7 ish. But I still think there will be Clubs breaking financial rules. And there might be more than 3 of them. If Gareth has a few tricks up his sleeve... he's got them well hidden. 7 straight losses for cheats FC. 2 goals for, 15 against. 1-6 to go down.

Sounds as if they are still frustrating teams after yesterday’s draw with Brentford. UTG!

It makes sense to me for them to play that way especially in the Championship. They had one of the lowest wagebills in League 1 so it would be ridiculous to try to go toe to toe with Championship. The strategy makes perfect sense.

Well they've found a way to frustrate (ie cheat) teams and are picking up the odd draw (and wins, which I hadn't noticed). I guess teams will suss out this 'tactic' and the draws will becomes losses as the season progresses. Basically, I just can't stand Wycombe. Yup, fairly irrational I know. They shouldn't be allowed to play in quarters. Pub team from Bucks. Refused to try and make the pitch playable when we were 3-1 up. That's cheating. Tightened to 1/4 best odds now to go down. £40 down to win £10. In a zero interest rate environment... that still looks quite attractive

That’s better epping! Just rely upon old-fashioned hatred, it short circuits the need for any reasoned argument! 😉 I apologise for trying to inject some reason into the thread!! Whatever, I think, like you, that they’ll go down and in the end who cares? Blimey, not even proper quarters, for proper quarters you need white as one colour. UTG!

I am happy with "irrational strong dislike" though. For the prosecution I would like to add... 1. They relegated us to tier 4 for the first time in our history in the penultimate game of the 1999-2000 season (1-2). 2. When we beat them 2-1 away on the penultimate game of 2013-2014... that pretty much guaranteed our league survival and their relegation to the conference. Only cheats fc winning at Torquay and a very unlikely home defeat by Mansfield would see us relegated out of the league for the first time in our history. Yeah, we know what happened next. 3. My youngest daughter has only ever seen one Bristol Rovers game. A dire 0-0 against cheats fc last season. I thoroughly enjoy it when they lose. I can't deny it. UTG.

But I have a sneaking regard for teams that make the most of their resources by creating a bunker 'us against the World' thing that offends the purity of football sensibilities. I was a big fan of how much Stoke used to wind all the football purists up - Arsene Wenger's annual meltdown when his precious little diddy men were breathed on by Stoke players was an annual joy. So Ainsworth is my kind of guy - although I admit it's as frustrating as hell to watch your team get suckered by pretty basic gamesmanship antics every single time but that's more to do with our cluelessness. I like streetwise teams that push the margins - I enjoy watching Atletico Madrid for example.
I'm probably the only Rovers fan with a softspot for Notts County as well - just call me a willful contrarian.

I haven’t checked), I too hated them. Anyway, don’t disagree with anything you say except on that horrible May Day in ‘14 I think I hated us more than anything. How did we mess that up? UTG!

Yes, that’s pretty much it. It’s why after years of AFCB being potless, when they got promotion it was good to see as a story. Lots of the pundits didnt like AFCB in the PL because it’s all about the big clubs. Yet AFCB went against the grain, not only were they in the PL they were also playing attractive football. How dare they! It was a great story, similar to Stoke but different. I don’t like Wycombe at all but I guess I have a high regard for GA and what he’s done there. He gets every bit out of his players and makes most of what he has. Its like Notts Co. I don’t really have this thing that some gasheads seem to have with them. I once went there and was treated as well as I’ve been treated anywhere and a lot better than 99% of places I’ve been so I quite like them. I think I save my most fervent dislike for the other lot south of the river. Perhaps it’s the sense of entitlement I dislike most, disliking clubs that seem to think they’re owed a place a the top table. UTG!

Yup - apologies, 'twas the 2000-2001 season. I am still too traumatised to check... Definitely not a Saturday, else I would have been there. I think we then beat Wrexham 4-0 on the Saturday, but our fate was already sealed by then. Relegated by a single point. And yes, the season before we were riding high until the very last game of the season and lost to already relegated Cardiff to dip out of the play-off places for the first time all season. FFS. It's hard work being a Gashead. I'm often asked in Essex why I support Bristol Rovers. My stock answer is: "it's a sh*t job, but someone's got to do it".

Yes it’s funny isn’t it. When you live away from the club you support people always ask about what team you support. When I say I was Bristol born and bred and I say I’m a Gashead, several people just laugh and say I chose the wrong team. I just reply you don’t chose a team, it just happens and before you know it.... Something else is that when you get talking esp to people in Bournemouth how they remember our rivalry in the 70s and 90s and 00s. They also laugh and say that overall they prefer us to the other lot but I’m never sure if that’s out of pity or anything else! 😭😭😭 UTG!

I think I save my most fervent dislike for the other lot south of the river. Perhaps it’s the sense of entitlement I dislike most, disliking clubs that seem to think they’re owed a place a the top table. UTG! I guess I'm a bit strange. I've never seen football as the 'beautiful game'. To me what attracts me to football is the competitiveness, the toughness, the passion. All of that interests me a lot more than the idea that I'm watching some sort of brilliant aesthetic festival. I'm told that lots of young people now apparently prefer watching Barcelona or Liverpool thrash someone 5/6-0 with silky play then a competitive match which could go either but where they are constantly frustrated in their attacking efforts. I find that depressing - might as well watch the Harlem Globetrotters. To me skill is fine and can be very impressive. But skill without real proper hard nosed competition is largely meaningless. My idea of a great game of football is that ding-dong Rovers had with Fleetwood just before Christmas 2 years ago. Very physcial encounter, lots of controversial incident and we get a righteous winner at the end to take the roof off!
So I tend to have a bit of a chip on my shoulder about pundits and managers who are obsessed with the game being played 'the right way' and some of the po-faced commentary towards sides that don't fit the bill. Currently it's Burnley who really annoy the purists - I like that! I like that there are different football cultures too. Tell a Uruguayan that they shouldn't dive or foul and they will laugh at you and say 'then you are not playing netball not football' - I've played 5-a-side with Uruguayans and watched World Cup matches with them and they will applaud dives and fouls by their team and even acknowledge good ones by the opposition! They just see pushing the boundaries of the rules as a fundamental part of the game not as a violation of its principles - they are proud that this is the way they can even the odds against bigger more successful countries. This is something I like - I admit this makes me very un-English though!
Strangely when it comes to cricket I generally have the complete opposite view and am highly committed to the game being played 'the right way' to the point that as a captain I have dropped people who behaved poorly on the field. I just don't see the same thing in football. No idea why. I guess it makes me a complete hypocrit!

No, I get that completely irish. I wonder if it’s the way you were brought up and started watching football. Perhaps if you’ve channelled vision to the top tiers of European football and have been brought up with Sky and all their “football only exists as a pure skill at the very top” attitude then you’ll never acknowledge football lower down. My first season at Rovers was going with my grandad and being plonked on the fence at the front of the South Stand whilst he was with his mates and watching from there. Never worried me, close to the pitch, close to the action. It’s why even today I don’t want to sit in a soulless bowl where everything looks neat and tidy. I accept that’s the way, for commercial reasons, that football is going but I like the quirky, the untidy, the watching of “real” football all over. My sons look at me strangely when I’ve said I went to Dorchester (neat ground) or Weymouth (not a neat ground!) and have watched real football. I enjoyed watching PL football for 5 years but I also wondered at the “emperors new clothes” syndrome where everyone said how wonderful it was but I saw enough players who couldn’t trap a ball and move in the same action, wingers who couldn’t clear the first defender when crossing and players who when touched would go down as if they were dead. I thought what are they seeing that I don’t? I suppose if it had been us I would have had a different opinion, but it was AFCB and to me that’s meh!! It was ok but it wasn’t great. It was the competition that was the attractive aspect. (Until Covid took that away, I’m still convinced that AFCB would have stayed up if it had been normal. Rather than a Chinese conspiracy I think Covid was an Aston Villa-styled-conspiracy!) UTG!

Seen this old thread on Eddie Howe and thought how well he has done and now that Trashley has gone things have turned right round for NUFC.
Newcastle United
Howe was appointed to replace Steve Bruce as the manager of Premier League club Newcastle United on 8th November 2021, signing a contract until the summer of 2024.
Howe watched from the stands as the club drew 1–1 with Brighton & Hove Albion, in a game in which Graeme Jones was acting as caretaker manager.
Jones was retained as first team assistant coach as part of Howe's new coaching staff, which also included Jason Tindall, Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone, whom he worked with at AFC Bournemouth, as well as retained Newcastle goalkeeping coach Simon Smith.
His appointment at Newcastle also reunited him with former players at AFC Bournemouth, such as Callum Wilson, Matt Ritchie and Ryan Fraser.
On 19th November 2021, Newcastle announced that Howe had tested positive for COVID-19 and would miss the first game in charge.
He watched his first game as manager from a hotel room as Newcastle drew 3–3 with Brentford on 20th November.
On 20th April 2022, following a 1–0 victory against Crystal Palace, Howe guided Newcastle to a 6th successive home win, the first time the club had done such a feat since 2004 under Sir Bobby Robson.
He guided Newcastle to an 11th place finish in the Premier League after winning 12 in the last 18 games of the season, and made sure Newcastle became the first team in Premier League history to avoid relegation after not winning any of the first 14 games they played.
On 5th August 2022, Howe was rewarded with a long-term contract at the club.
I have always liked NUFC as far back as the Malcolm Macdonald days, it must something to do with Magpies and that tune.

Eddie Howe: Newcastle boss not ruling out title challenge..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/5D4D/production/_128158832_gettyimages-1452531957.jpgNewcastle manager Eddie Howe says he is not ruling out his side being Premier League title challengers this season. The Magpies won their sixth successive league match, a comfortable 3-0 victory against Leicester, on 26 December. Newcastle currently sit 3rd in the Premier League table, two points off Manchester City and seven off league-leaders Arsenal, who both have a game in hand. "I won't say we can't [win title]," said Howe. Howe's comments come after Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers said Newcastle are "absolutely" in the title race and could emulate the Foxes' 2015-16 Premier League-winning season. "Having watched them through the season and seeing them today, they've got that hunger there with a point to prove," Rodgers said after seeing his side well beaten earlier this week. "You make a great start and that gives you the freedom that you can stay there." After the win, which saw his side temporarily go second in the Premier League, Howe said: "I have no problem with the supporters dreaming of what we can achieve." Newcastle's Saudi-backed ownership group have invested around £210m in the squad since completing their takeover in October 2021 but Howe was keen to underplay any spending in the January transfer window. "If you're looking to improve the team, the starting XI as it is if we have no injuries, then that is a challenge in the market currently," he said. "With an unlimited budget, that might be possible - not that we necessarily have a budget at the moment - but with Financial Fair Play looming and with those restrictions, it's almost impossible." Midfielder Jonjo Shelvey is sidelined with a calf injury for a further six to eight weeks and his absence could force Howe into doing some winter business. "Can you improve the squad? That's a different question," he added. "Anything we do do in January then potentially harms us for the summer. "There is always another window coming up and what you don't want to do is handcuff yourself for future windows, so there's a lot to consider." The club's record signing Alexander Isak could be close to a return while Howe hopes to have forward Callum Wilson fit for his side's game against Leeds on Saturday after illness.

Eddie H left AFCB by mutual consent yesterday evening. Escaping the Conference by fingertips to the PL, it’s a story we’ll probably not see again. No doubt some will be happy but nowadays people use the expressions “legend” and “end of an era” too much but both sum up what EH did at Bournemouth. Have a good rest Eddie, you deserve it. UTG! Thought i would refresh your old post on what has turned out an outstanding manager, 45 year old Edward John Frank Howe. ................................................................................................................................................................................ Alan Shearer column: How Eddie Howe has reignited Newcastle – ‘it’s onwards and upwards from here’Alan Shearer column ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/770/cpsprodpb/00ea/live/971a5e60-d214-11ed-8172-41b30e71a6c4.jpgIt's still going to be extremely difficult for Newcastle to secure a top-four finish, but Sunday's win over Manchester United has put them in a great position with 11 games to go. The aim now, as it has been at St James' Park all season, is onwards and upwards - and what is really encouraging is how this Newcastle team looks ready for whatever challenge comes next, home or away. Eddie Howe deserves great credit for that, because he has done an unbelievable job with his squad. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/2C3D/production/_129252311_topofthepremierleague.pngNewcastle went through a bit of a sticky spell earlier in the year when they dropped a few points against teams in the bottom half of the table, and they also had the disappointment of losing the Carabao Cup final at the end of February too. When they were beaten by Manchester City at the start of March, they were left eight points behind United in third and were without a win in five league games. It was a case of right, how does Howe get this team ignited again? Three successive wins later, he has clearly achieved that. They are now above Erik ten Hag's side on goal difference and, as well as playing with real purpose, there appears to be a fantastic spirit in the camp. What's really important is that Howe has got options now too, which he has never really had at St James' Park before. Alexander Isak, for example, has missed a big chunk of this season through injury but now he is back fully fit and Howe has a decision to make about who to play up front. Isak got the nod over Callum Wilson to start against Manchester United and put in an unbelievable shift, which included him helping to make Newcastle's first goal through his pressing and work-rate as United tried to play out from the back. Newcastle still needed to see the game out, but they could bring on more quality to do that, as Wilson showed with the second goal that made sure of the points. You can tell Howe trusts his squad because he was about to make three changes at once on Sunday, just before Joe Willock broke the deadlock. I love the fact Newcastle have game-changers on the bench now, because that is something they have not had for a long time. It means they have different ways to try to win games, on top of being so solid - people already know that they are now a tough nut to crack. The fact they have the best defensive record in the Premier League shows they are not an easy touch but, watching them, you can tell they have got a bit about them everywhere - they look like a proper team. It felt to me like Sunday was a game Newcastle had to win - they have got three successive away games next, at West Ham, Brentford and Aston Villa, so it was very important that they used the energy of the home crowd to get them over the line against one of their direct rivals for a Champions League place. So it was a huge result for them, and a big performance too - they more than deserved their victory Newcastle kept United's main man, Marcus Rashford, quiet and if you can do that, particularly away from Old Trafford, then you give yourself an excellent chance. Kieran Trippier dealt with Rashford superbly, and didn't give him a kick. Sven Botman was magnificent too, whenever United did get through, with a couple of last-ditch tackles. Antony went past Dan Burn a couple of times in the first half but he was invisible after the break and when Jadon Sancho replaced him, he did nothing. The Newcastle midfield was completely dominant, but I don't think there was one battle lost anywhere on the pitch. It was great to see.

Thanks bt. He’s done very well at Newcastle to go with his remarkable spell at AFCB. I like many things about how he manages not least the way he never gets too high when he wins nor too low when he loses. Being in Dorset for over 46 years due to work I’ve not met many footballers but I have met EH a couple of times both professionally and found him great when explaining stuff to children and always willing to support the local community. I’d say he was one of the good guys in football and is completely deserving of any success he achieves.

Spurs game 'huge' and 'big moment in our season' - Eddie Howe..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/72e2/live/f56ea950-e027-11ed-950d-333e23910f4f.jpgEddie Howe says Sunday's game against top-four rivals Tottenham is huge for Newcastle and "what we crave as professionals". The Magpies are three points above fifth-placed Spurs, who have played one game more. "It's a huge game for us," Howe said. "No denying that at this stage of the season with the games running out. "We’re playing one of our competitors in the league so it’s a big moment in our season. We’re pleased to be at home and we hope we can feel the force of the crowd this week. "We need everyone united in the game, which I'm sure we will be, and hopefully we can respond to next week's disappointment. "It’s what we crave as professionals. You want the big games, you want the big occasions and you want it to mean something. We’re determined to express ourselves in the best way possible. "We want the occasion to galvanise us, we don’t want to play with any fear or restraints and we want to give the best us." Howe was asked if he would agree with those saying Sunday's game is the biggest for Newcastle in the Premier League in the season. "I wouldn’t have an issue with anyone saying that," he said. "I think it is. It's a cliche but it's our next game. It's what's ahead of us that's important. "We have risen to these types of games this season. Hopefully we can find another gear again." ....................................................................................................................................................................... Almiron deserves 'huge credit' - but transformation 'slightly unusual'..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/539/cpsprodpb/2682/live/8f321090-e028-11ed-97eb-f9fe665d2627.jpgEddie Howe said Miguel Almiron's transformation in front of goal is "slightly unusual" but is testament to his own hard work. The Paraguay international was in and out of the Magpies side when Howe first arrived, but has established himself as a regular this season and is the team's top scorer. Almiron has 11 goals in 33 games in all competitions this season, compared to just one goal in 32 games last campaign. Howe said: "I’d say it’s probably slightly unusual to have the change in his goal scoring this year compared to previous seasons. The player deserves huge credit because he’s really got his head down and worked and he’s developed his game. "I see him honing his skills finishing-wise regularly after training to try and be the best he can be in the positions he is going to find himself in. It’s all come from his own hard work. "He’s always had the physical capabilities to deliver. Off the ball he’s an incredible performer for us and certainly helps us with our high-intensity pressing game that we want to implement. "On the ball he has vastly developed his game. He's now has a unique way of playing and has unique relationships with the team, with Kieran [Trippier], Sean [Longstaff] and Bruno [Guimaraes]. "It's quite evident when we play how he links up with those players. His game is in a good place and we are delighted to get him back fit. He’s a big player for us." Almiron came on as a second-half substitute against Aston Villa after the Magpies' last four games with a thigh problem and Howe said the 29-year-old is an option to start against Tottenham this weekend. "He’s an option [to start], I'd say he's in contention," he said. "He's had minimal training and has trained well as Miggy usually does. I was pleased to see him back on the pitch but prior to that he had quite a long absence so we’ll wait and see. "I’ll try and make the right call for him and the team."

'I don’t think he gets the plaudits he deserves'ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/108a/live/57025cf0-f961-11ed-92cc-b3a9bf1f67e9.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/news/618/cpsprodpb/0f60/live/fd1fb220-f931-11ed-a486-5351c0b07af6.jpgNewcastle assistant Jason Tindall says Eddie Howe is "up there with the best managers currently" after guiding the Magpies to a top-four finish in the Premier League. "I don’t think he gets the plaudits he deserves," Tindall, who also worked alongside Howe at Bournemouth and Burnley, told BBC Radio Newcastle., external "He’s certainly up there with the best managers currently. To achieve what we’ve achieved at Newcastle, and for Eddie to do what he’s done, is a fantastic achievement. "You go all the way back to the time when the journey started at Bournemouth - minus 17 points, bottom of League Two - the journey that was achieved at that football club. "To then come to Newcastle, a team that was fighting at the bottom end of the Premier League, and 18 months later we’re third in the Premier League and going to the Champions League next season. That’s testament to him - he’s the leader of the group, he works extremely hard and it’s no more than he deserves. Tindall continued: "It’s an amazing achievement. If you’d said to us 18 months ago that Newcastle would be in the Champions League next season, I don’t think anyone would have believed you - us included. "It’s been an incredible journey and it’s testament to every single staff member, the players and also the fans. The fans have played a huge part in the success we’ve had and the journey we’ve had, and we’re very thankful for that." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/5d62/live/1a571be0-f936-11ed-a186-e162ae985f47.jpgHere are some of your comments on Newcastle's rise to Europe's top table under Eddie Howe:Anthony: Well, I was 32 last time Sir Bobby Robson took us on a European journey. So now, as an older, wiser Toon fan, I will really drink it all in and look on in awe to see what Eddie can do against the big boys. What a season. What a turnaround. What a guy. In Eddie we trust. Craig: A fantastic achievement after a brilliant season. I think most fans would have taken top 10 and a cup run. The highest I thought we'd finish was sixth. Eddie Howe and his team have done a superb job. Looking forward to next season! Gemma: There’s was lump in my throat last night that’s still there this morning. What an achievement for this club, this city, this team and these fans. Geordie: I said to friends we would do top six and get to a cup final, so to finish in the top four is outstanding. As a fan since 1973, I couldn't be more proud of the whole set-up. Keep it going, boys. Mark: I am so, so ready for a European tour. After all those years of hurt under Ashley, we deserve this. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/4ef6/live/9baaded0-f92b-11ed-8a83-8f90d3fcee49.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/976/cpsprodpb/CB74/production/_129848025_express.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/976/cpsprodpb/11994/production/_129848027_star.jpg
