Tino Livramento: Newcastle United agree £40m deal for Southampton defender..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/3E8E/production/_130641061_gettyimages-1571866074.jpg Livramento missed most of last season with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuryNewcastle United have agreed a deal for Southampton right-back Tino Livramento worth £40m including add-ons, reports BBC Radio Solent. The 20-year-old joined the south-coast club from Chelsea in 2021 for £5m. Livramento's departure comes after Southampton were relegated from the Premier League last season. The England Under-21 defender made just two outings last term after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in April 2022. He came on as a substitute in Southampton's final two games of campaign against Brighton and Liverpool. Livramento played 32 games during the 2021-22 season, 28 of those in the Premier League. Newcastle have signed Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali and England winger Harvey Barnes this summer as the Tyneside club look to push on from their top-four finish last season. Eddie Howe's side begin the new Premier League campaign on 12th August when they host Aston Villa.

Tino Livramento: Newcastle sign Southampton defender in £40m deal..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/F981/production/_130637836_gettyimages-1562993074.jpg Tino Livramento has won five caps for England Under-21sNewcastle United have signed Southampton defender Tino Livramento in a deal worth up to £40m. The deal is worth an initial £32m and the 20-year-old Englishman has signed a five-year contract. Livramento, who joined Southampton from Chelsea for £5m in 2021, is Newcastle's third summer signing. "Tino is a very talented young player with an exciting future ahead of him so we are delighted to sign him," said manager Eddie Howe. "At 20, he already has lots of attributes that I admire, but he also has the potential and drive to really grow with this team. "I'm looking forward to working with him and to seeing him develop in a Newcastle shirt." "The way the manager plays football is really attractive and I feel like it suits me as a player," said Livramento. "With how well the team did last season, the trajectory that we're on now, I'm just looking forward to being a part of that. "To be able to learn from Kieran Trippier is another big thing for me. Hopefully he teaches me how to become a better player and a better full-back." Livramento made only two Southampton appearances last season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in April 2022. He came on as a substitute in their final two Premier League games against Brighton and Liverpool. Livramento played 32 matches in 2021-22, including 28 in the Premier League. Newcastle, who finished fourth in the table last season, have signed Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali and England winger Harvey Barnes this summer. They host Aston Villa on Saturday in their first game of the season. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/F8D8/production/_130640736_gettyimages-1571461223.jpg

Newcastle United agree to loan Lewis Hall from Chelsea before permanent deal next summer..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/F337/production/_130836226_gettyimages-1258279043.jpg Lewis Hall made his senior Chelsea debut in an FA Cup victory over Chesterfield in January 2022Newcastle have agreed to sign Chelsea's Lewis Hall on an initial loan deal and will buy the player next summer. The 18-year-old made his Premier League debut for the Blues in a 1-0 defeat at Newcastle in November 2022. Hall will move to St James' Park on loan now, and a fee of £28m plus £7m in add-ons to sign him permanently will be activated next summer. "He's a player I like - very versatile with really good potential," said Newcastle manager Eddie Howe. Speaking before the deal was confirmed, Howe added that if Hall joined the Magpies he would be the last player they signed this summer, unless there were injuries. The deal for academy graduate Hall also includes a sell-on clause for Chelsea should he leave Newcastle. The England Under-21 international is best known for playing as a left-back but has also featured on the wing and in midfield during his time at Stamford Bridge. He made 11 appearances for Chelsea across all competitions last season, including nine in the Premier League, and is the club's Academy Player of the Year for 2023.

Here are some of your thoughts:Mike: A top-class right-sided midfielder. Almiron always gives his all, and had a great spell last season - but if we're honest with ourselves, we'll acknowledge he generally lacks the consistency and that extra quality that is needed at the highest level. Richard: I think we need one more central defender and striker. Harry Maguire would be a good addition. Andrew: It all depends on Botman’s injury. He’s proving himself to be one of the best defenders in the league. If he’s going to be injured for numerous weeks, then I’d want us to sign a world-class defender. Lascelles cannot cover well enough! John: A quality right-sided attacker and a quality right-footed centre-half. If we had the budget I'd also get a replacement for Bruno, unless he agrees to sign his contract.

Steve Harper: Newcastle United academy director and ex-goalkeeper recovering from stroke..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/14776/production/_131003838_gettyimages-1329046807.jpg Steve Harper is the longest serving player in Newcastle's historyNewcastle United academy director Steve Harper is "awake and recovering well" after suffering a stroke on Monday. The 48-year-old former goalkeeper played 199 times for the Magpies between 1993 and 2013. The club confirmed he suffered a subarachnoid haemorrhage, which the NHS website says is an uncommon type of stroke caused by bleeding on the surface of the brain and can be fatal. "Steve will be given the club's full support as he recovers," United said. "Steve, his family and everyone at Newcastle United extend a heartfelt thank you to NHS staff for the incredible care he is receiving. "Everyone connected with Newcastle United send their best wishes to Steve and his family as he continues his recuperation." Harper is the longest serving player in Newcastle's history, with a 20-year spell - joining them in 1993 as a teenager and staying until 2013 when he joined Hull. However, he played only 199 games during that time as he largely served as back-up goalkeeper to Pavel Srnicek, Shaka Hislop and Shay Given. He was named Newcastle's full-time academy director in 2021 after various other coaching roles with the club.

Update: Stabbed Newcastle United fan home after Milan attack..By Martin Lindsay, BBC Radio Newcastle.A Newcastle United fan who was stabbed during an attack in Milan is back home and "on the mend", his family has said. Eddie McKay was approached by a group of men on Monday night while returning to his hotel in the Italian city. The 58-year-old was taken to hospital after being stabbed twice in the arm and once in the back. Posting on social media, Mr McKay said it had been an "unprovoked attack" and he was thankful his son and friend were not seriously hurt. Police are investigating the assault, which happened hours before Newcastle's Champions League match with AC Milan. Mr McKay's family told BBC Radio Newcastle he had safely returned home and he said he had been checked at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and was "all good" although still a "bit sore". Newcastle United said it was "deeply concerned" at what happened, hours before its first Champions League appearance for 20 years, and it was liaising with the local authorities. "Our thoughts are with the supporter and their family and we hope for a full and speedy recovery," the club said. Police were called at about midnight in the Navigli area of Milan, a popular nightlife area. Mr McKay was with a friend and it is thought they encountered a group of about eight people. State police said it was not known if the group were Italians or foreigners.

Alexander Isak scored the winner for a largely second-string Newcastle, who came to life after the break to beat a much-changed City. Newcastle, runners-up to Manchester United in last year's final, made 10 changes from Sunday's 8-0 win at Sheffield United and barely got a kick in a first half dominated by the visitors. But with Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon sent on at the break, the Magpies were transformed, with Isak slotting home following fine work from Joelinton. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/28/521fbafa-9e21-4b5c-8f65-9c6077ce48c5.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/28/1f8b3afb-0e59-488f-9217-7f9ff8046313.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/28/0087dd64-c276-4f92-9750-3a02784a7ef3.jpgNewcastle boss Eddie Howe said: "Pre-game, the run last year was in our thoughts," "It was an inspiration to us and helped our season, albeit the final maybe affected our league results. We look back on it with real pride. "We want to try and go one further if we can but there is a long way to go at this stage. We are still there fighting." "It was a game of two halves. First was tough and City played well. We didn't but defended well as we didn't have the ball," Howe told Sky Sports. "Second half we were excellent in most aspects, defensively and offensively. We attacked well and probably deserved to win in the end. "There were tactical changes but the biggest thing was in belief. "That is not a reflection on the lads we took off but the lads we brought on made a big difference. With the ball we were a better team completely." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/28/1bd9d5d5-3efd-4baf-83fa-bc8d256517c5.jpgPoor Pep
Here's what Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola made of the match."We played an incredible game. They increased after the break and were more aggressive. They scored a goal. Last season we were out against Southampton and not there but tonight we were. Congratulations to Newcastle," speaking to Sky Sports. "They start to be more aggressive. Yeah, it was a tight game and the players who played played really good. It is football. The way we played in the first half and second half was amazing. But they played aggressive to win the game. "I leave comfortable with how we played, no injuries and minutes for Mateo [Kovacic] and Jack [Grealish]."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/4141/live/b5f26ab0-4264-11ee-9b58-cb80889117a8.jpgWe asked for your views on Saturday's game between Newcastle United and Burnley.
Here are some of your comments:
Newcastle fansAndrew: We witnessed proof that Eddie Howe really is the best manager in the world on Saturday… he’s turned Lascelles into a competent defender again! Wow! That might even be more incredible than Almiron’s goal was. Overall a basic performance but one which takes us a step closer to a good season. Bring on PSG! Lewis: Another solid performance from the Magpies. Burnley were tricky opposition, but we showed them who's boss. Another injury is concerning though, let's hope that isn't a serious one for 'Big Joe'. I don't fear any team in the form we're in, so bring on UCL next week! Andy: A deserved win, albeit against a struggling team. Newcastle still have a lot to do to maintain strength and stamina in relation to City and the other top flight teams, but time and patience will see them reap the rewards. Cliff: It’s not 8-0 but it’s exactly what the doctor ordered. Another clean sheet and an imperious performance across the pitch. Other than a few minutes at the start it was comfortable and an easy win leading into a massive week. Only the Joelinton injury is a negative. Burnley fansJames: The results are expected playing all the top clubs (who qualified for European competition) early in the season while still adjusting to the new league and bedding in the several new players. Against weaker opposition and later in the season against the top echelon we will get stronger results. Andrew: Rode our luck at times, had a couple of good moments which with more experience could have resulted in a goal. Sadly I think we are too naïve - today the Newcastle players were pushing, shirt pulling and screaming in agony yet we get penalised. Not disputing the talent that Newcastle had on show but we need to learn quickly. Mike: The clock's ticking but the team is not clicking. I have a lot if faith in Kompany but bringing on two players that were pivotal in last season's victory after 88 minutes seems a little optimistic, to say the least. Clive: Too many square balls trying to play out of the back and playing ourselves into trouble. Lacklustre upfront, no guile in midfield. Come on Vinny, get it sorted.

You prepare for the game, you are in the training ground and it is all about the details of the game and then you come here and see what it means. This is going to be a big night for us. "It is always about the game, not the occasion. They have changed their team slightly so we are going to have to be aware of what they are going to do and then we have to hurt them. A good start in to the match wills settle us down. Could you have foreseen nights like this? "Not in our wildest dreams. When we lost to Cambridge in the FA Cup this seemed a world away really. We have come into this game in really good form and I just want the boys to put in another good performance. "We have some very good players and then underneath the ability we have team spirit and the backing of the owners and the supporters. You need that unity. We have it and we have to try and keep it." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/10/4/264d5623-5334-407f-bea6-79574e791198.jpgMore from Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe speaking to TNT Sports, about injured players: "I think it is a blow because we have those players missing and they are massive for us. We knew before the season it was going to be that kind of season and who can step up and fill the void? This is the ultimate test." Why does Tonali come in? "Sandro is one of the players in the squad with Champions League experience. I think he is an outstanding and suited to nights like this. We really hope it goes well today. He is an outstanding talent and I think our midfield looks strong today." How do you deal with Mbappe? "We don't tend to focus on individuals and we have done our work on him.,We have to respect the talent he has. We have prepared for both and then the hard bit is implementing our plan to try and nullify his threat." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/10/4/a6fb8205-d6d2-4244-9725-23d748712aad.jpgKieran Trippier is hoping to keep Kylian Mbappe quiet tonight - even if it upsets his young son.

Newcastle United 4-1 Paris St-Germain: Magpies' win worth the 20-year wait - by Phil McNulty

ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/F7D3/production/_131334436_gettyimages-1706247003-1.jpg Newcastle fans enjoyed a special night at St James' ParkNewcastle United and the Toon Army had waited two decades for a Champions League night like this and when it came it was worth every day and all the disappointments in between after an electrifying night on Tyneside. As the Geordie hordes filed down the hill past statues of Sir Bobby Robson and Alan Shearer - manager and player when Barcelona won 2-0 in the last Champions League game at St James' Park in March 2003 - it almost looked like they were walking on air. When Eddie Howe arrived at Newcastle almost two years ago, the first major appointment of the club's controversial Saudi Arabian owners, they were 19th in the Premier League and five points from safety. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/DB9F/production/_131332265_gettyimages-1717430273.jpgIt is the result of Howe's shrewd management and high finance that has led to a return to the Champions League and a night that saw Paris St-Germain thrashed 4-1 in another statement about the transformation this club had undergone. PSG and their superstar Kylian Mbappe were touted as the true test of Newcastle's Champions League credentials. It was an examination Howe and his players passed with distinction. Yes, PSG were poor but to simply put Newcastle's comprehensive triumph down to their deficiencies is to do the Magpies the greatest disservice as this was their night, their control, almost from start to finish. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/386B/production/_131334441_gettyimages-1706253509.jpgFabian Schar crashed in a brilliant late fourthAnthony Gordon whirled his arms in a demand for greater noise - not that it was needed - in the opening seconds while Bruno Guimaraes and Dan Burn reacted to winning relatively routine challenges by turning to the crowd with fists clenched and roars. And how this packed house lapped it all up. Mbappe offered an early threat when he set up a chance for Ousmane Dembele but that was about it. Outnumbered, marginalised and shut down, Mbappe was the picture of frustration long before the final whistle. The final whistle was greeted by a noise that could have been heard across the Tyne Bridge. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/A1E3/production/_131334414_gettyimages-1717413985.jpg

We shouldn't underestimate the work done by Eddie Howe. This Newcastle team will hit so many 'big teams' hard in this year's CL. Steve, Reading: So a superb result for Newcastle. Anthony Gordon, Dan Burn and Sean Longstaff will be nowhere near the England squad with Harry Maguire, Jordan Henderson and Calvin Phillips in How mad is that? Dave: Newcastle have been written off as a punching bag from the moment they qualified. Well, they just walked up to European football and kicked the front door in. Patrick: Hate to spoil the party, but PSG aren't that good. Mike: I've seen a few big games at St James' Park in the last few years but this was something else, watching the noise of the jeering and taunting PSG fans march up the hill to find themselves drowned out once they got in, PSG were not great but they still had quality. Almiron, Longstaff and Schar scoring from the old guard and captain Lascells shutting out Mbappe - what a night. My voice is gone. Just waking up to check it wasn't a dream. Shaun, Harrogate - via WhatsApp: I'd like to know whether people still think that Howe would be the first managerial casualty of the season, something I read on here after one-goal losses to Man City and Liverpool.

It was, quite frankly, hard to believe what was unfolding on the pitch in front of our eyes. A wonderful finish from Miggy, two Geordies scoring and then Schar still pressing in the 91st minute to steal the ball, swap passes with Murphy and then steer the ball into the top corner of the net. Whatever team you support this is why we turn up in all weathers for match after match. It's been a long personal slog over 56 years but nights like last night remind you once again that dreams can come true. Anon: This is Newcastle’s best ever win - I’ve been supporting them since 1995… This match easily beats the era when Asprilla scored his hat trick vs Barcelona Jonsey N Wales: Best ever win for Newcastle 5-0 vs Man Utd… Enough said Anon: I'm 26 that is the best night I’ve ever had supporting Newcastle and the best win. Two local guys scoring whilst keeping arguably the best player in the world quiet all night. Matt, Devon: I’ve read far too many write ups saying “Newcastle with their new found wealth” Did we spend over a billion in three transfer windows? No! It’s a team as far as Eddie and his staff are concerned and the players are buying into it. Back with the big boys and loving it. Ryan: So happy for Newcastle! What a night! But also, Mbappe should go to Madrid very soon. He is wasted in this deteriorating, rudderless PSG side and looks badly out of form. Jeremiah: With this kind of performance, there's no way Mbappe will extend his contract with PSG. Absolutely, no chance

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/022f/live/58c9cb30-66a9-11ee-a0c8-ab8a89e71afa.jpgNewcastle have got some ground to make up on the leading pack, but overall I am pretty pleased with the start they have made. I always thought it would be tough for them to get into the Champions League places again after finishing fourth last time, and they have had to deal with a difficult run of early games. They lost three in a row to City, Liverpool and Brighton, which was a blow, but it was the manner of the home defeat to the Reds that was the most damaging - losing so late, and to 10 men. Since then, though, they have recovered well and got some great results in the Premier League despite having key players like Sven Botman, Joelinton and Callum Wilson out injured. On top of that, their performances in their two games in the Champions League have been phenomenal. Yes, they might have got a bit lucky in Milan but there was nothing fortunate about the way they beat Paris St-Germain last week - it was an amazing game, one of the best I have been to. Nights like that lift the whole club and they are exactly what they worked so hard for last year. Following that up against West Ham on Sunday was always going to be tough, and they struggled to find their rhythm in the first half, which was understandable. After that, though, they showed a great reaction and will feel they should have won it. The only disappointing part of their whole week was seeing West Ham equalise so late on.
