Newcastle United introduce 'sound shirts' for deaf fans..By Katie Gornall, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/A1BA/production/_133120414_newc_utd_fans.jpg Newcastle United fans Ryan Gregson and David Wilson will experience a match wearing the "sound shirts"Newcastle United are set to introduce ground-breaking "sound shirts", which will allow deaf fans to "feel" the noise of St James' Park for the first time. The shirts, which look like a normal replica jersey, turn sound into touch using special sensors and motors - known as haptic technology - and will be used at a football match for the first time when Newcastle host Tottenham in the Premier League on Saturday. "When you're wearing the shirt, it's a bit like you're wearing the stadium," said Ryan Genz, co-founder of Cute Circuit, the company behind the technology. "We have microphones hidden all around St James' that are capturing different parts of the crowd noise." The sound from those microphones is transmitted to tiny motors embedded in the fabric of the shirt. These vibrate and light up in response to the atmosphere in the ground. "It's not just the people near you that you're feeling in the shirt," Genz said. "You're feeling people chanting and cheering all over the entire stadium. And you're feeling them in different parts of the shirt." The shirts will be worn by fans who are deaf or have hearing loss - among them season-ticket holders Ryan Gregson and David Wilson. "I'm excited," said Gregson, 28. "It will link us to the stadium, to the crowd, the music and the singing." The friends, who use British Sign Language to communicate, have worn the shirts briefly as part of a demonstration, but have yet to experience the real thing. Wilson said: "I could feel [the shirt] on my body and I thought: 'Wow, is this what sound feels like?' It was so different. I felt like it was alive." The launch has been driven by Newcastle's sponsor, Saudi events company Sela, which for Saturday's game will donate the space it normally has on the front of the club's shirts to RNID, the national hearing loss charity. Saturday's match is being used to raise awareness of the 12 million people in the UK who are deaf or hard of hearing, and make attending a live game a more inclusive experience. Teri Devine, the RNID's director for inclusion, said: "Deaf people love sport as much as anybody else. "I'm sure the deaf community will absolutely embrace the haptic shirts and we would love other clubs to pick up on this sort of technology, and other technologies that can do to make the game more accessible for deaf people." The technology has previously been used by deaf people to experience classical music at concert halls. Francesca Rosella, who invented the shirt with her colleague Genz, explained that adapting the shirt for a football match was a big challenge. She said: "In a stadium, everybody is cheering and screaming and so it's a completely different environment. "That brings a whole new dimension of having really been into the thick of the action that we didn't have previously."

Report By Timothy Abraham, BBC Sport.Alexander Isak's rich goalscoring form at St James' Park continued as Newcastle beat Tottenham to boost their hopes of European football next season. Isak produced two clinical finishes to score in each half as he netted on home turf for the sixth consecutive match. The striker now has 17 goals in 24 Premier League appearances this season. Anthony Gordan and Fabian Schar were also on target for the Magpies, while Timo Werner had two chances for Spurs but his finishing let him down. Newcastle's emphatic victory lifted them up to sixth in the table - above Manchester United, who drew 2-2 with Bournemouth, on goal difference. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/9604/production/_133140483_gettyimages-2148502998.jpgAlexander Isak has scored 21 goals in all competitions for Newcastle this season

Newcastle 4-0 Tottenham: What Eddie Howe and Alexander Isak said:ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/d933/live/721d0ff0-f9b8-11ee-a087-fd4b990f545b.jpgEddie Howe speaking to BBC Match of the Day after Newcastle's victory v Tottenham: "It was a great performance from us, I thought the players executed everything in a really professional, diligent way. Really pleased with the players." On Newcastle's discipline: "We protected the lead really well because we went for more goals and were aggressive still. We looked in a really great place physically, were able to execute what we wanted to do, and I think everyone performed at a very good level." On getting back-to-back wins: "I think that's why winning when you don't play well is such a skill and can't be underestimated because you will have your days when everything does go your way and I think we showed today that we can still be a very efficient team, ruthless with our attacking, very diligent and compact. Everything came together and we deservedly won." On how deep the players have had to dig with the squad struggling with injuries: "Incredibly deep. I've complimented the players all season that the guys who have been fit for the whole season have carried the burden and have been outstanding. The mentality to the challenge has never wavered, we've had some difficult moments but they've come through them. Hopefully we can stay in relatively good shape between now and the end of the season and continue to pick up points." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/acdb/live/4fb0f450-f99e-11ee-9ac9-d9f5958d30e9.jpgAlexander Isak speaking to BBC Match of the Day after Newcastle's victory against Tottenham: "Playing football is really fun at the moment, especially when we have days like this. When the fans are like they are always when we play at home, it feels like we are so strong here." On service he gets from his teammates: "We have spoken about being more precise with our passes, because Tottenham have a high line so if we have good passes we can hurt them in behind. The service today was incredible." On scoring in a sixth home game in a row: "You guys in the media always find more records and statistics to be beaten, but I just play and do my best. It is obviously a nice thing to have." On turning form around since FA Cup exit: "We know we can still achieve something this season and end it in a good way. We have a lot of energy and momentum now, have turned things around and it is just about keeping on going like this."

Here are some of your answers:
Newcastle fans
Daniel: Brilliant game to watch. It seems we have our passion for winning back, like how it was at the start of the season. Happy Bruno didn’t get a card, as it means no suspension. Amazing performance from all the lads. Simon: What a performance. Brilliant work across the field. Strong defensive shape with players supporting each other. Brilliant going forward. I think this is our strongest, most switched on, performance this season. Well done Eddie, staff and players. Matt: Eddie Howe's tactics today worked perfectly. Gordon, Isak and Barnes terrorised Spurs' high line and when we needed to defend the flexible back five worked well. Anyone still saying Eddie should be sacked surely can’t be saying anything after this. So proud of this team with all the injuries we’ve had. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/56/Newcastle_United_Logo.svg/200px-Newcastle_United_Logo.svg.png

Juventus will listen to offers for Italian forward Federico Chiesa, who has been linked with Newcastle and Liverpool, after disagreements between the 26-year-old and boss Massimiliano Allegri over his role. Newcastle United and Liverpool have entered the race to sign Sporting Lisbon's 20-year-old Ivory Coast defender Ousmane Diomande, who is also wanted by Chelsea. The Magpies have sent scouts to watch Boca Juniors' 22-year-old midfielder Kevin Zenon and defender Nicolas Valentini, 23. Arsenal are looking at bringing in a striker and winger this summer, with 24-year-old Newcastle United and Sweden forward Alexander Isak among their targets. Newcastle United and Chelsea are interested in 25-year-old Arsenal and England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. Finally, the Magpies are scouting 24-year-old Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, as they consider a summer move for the England international. Newcastle United and Manchester United could move for 29-year-old France midfielder Adrien Rabiot, if he does not sign a new contract with Juventus this summer. Meanwhile, the Magpies are lining up a £25m move for 19-year-old Juventus and Spain Under-21s defender Dean Huijsen, who is on loan at Roma. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/bb04/live/a48258c0-fe62-11ee-8714-2f8f4239ddb3.jpg

The 32-year-old England striker, who is set to return from injury, is under contract at St James' Park until the end of next season, but - with the club facing difficult decisions to meet profit and sustainability regulations - has been linked with a move away. Wilson, who has only managed 22 appearances this term, is still deeply admired by a manager who also worked with him at Bournemouth. "It's undoubted how I feel about Callum, how I feel about his qualities and what he can offer the team," Howe said. "If you lose a player of that quality, to then find a player of equal standard will cost the club a lot of money. "That's always the big talking point about any business we do in the summer. If you lose a player, how can you replace him with the same quality with Financial Fair Play implications around the corner?"

Wednesday 24th April 2024 - Premier League
Crystal Palace 2 (Matete 55, 88) Newcastle United 0
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/118A2/production/_133224817_3b35d04b2ce3c8017a332a6171fc9460f1c4af76.jpg Jean-Philippe Mateta has scored 11 league goals for Crystal Palace this season
Report By Alex Howell, BBC Sport football news reporter at Selhurst Park.
A double from Jean-Philippe Mateta saw Crystal Palace beat Newcastle at Selhurst Park to guarantee Premier League football for another season. The Frenchman scored his first 10 minutes into the second half as he exchanged passes with Jordan Ayew before sliding the ball past Martin Dubravka. He sealed the victory two minutes from time, converting from a Will Hughes cut-back for his 11th league goal of the season. Newcastle had their best chance when Alexander Isak was sent through on goal in the first half but Dean Henderson raced out of the Palace goal to smother the shot. Newcastle also thought they should have had a penalty late in the second half when Sean Longstaff went down after a challenge from Will Hughes but after a VAR check, nothing was given. The victory is the Eagles third in the row and they can start looking up the table as they start to plan for a club record 12th season in the Premier League rather than worrying about the relegation battle below.

Here are some of your answers:
Newcastle fans
Simon: Well that was embarrassing. How is it we can beat Fulham and Tottenham with great open free-flowing football, but lose to Crystal Palace Iooking like a Sunday league team? I just don't get it and Man Utd have got a grip of sixth. I can't see us finishing with Europe in our pocket if we play like that! Johno: Never in the game. Dismal effort. Tom: Abysmal performance. If I was Eddie Howe, I would be ripping into that squad today. The midfield was totally inefficient. Far too weak. We were unable to string two passes together. Poor performance from [Harvey] Barnes, [Sean] Longstaff and [Jacob] Murphy. I am not sure what sort of incentive these players need. European football is there for the taking. Johnny: So disappointed! European chance was there and we were beaten all over the park! Can we hold onto Bruno [Guimaraes] and [Alexander] Isak? I doubt it now? Barry: Extremely poor display with only two shots on goal in 90 minutes. No point in agonising about Europe - with performances like tonight, they simply don’t deserve it. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/4/24/53bcb967-3668-42a6-8a6e-3dca2e2d45ea.jpg

Crystal Palace 2-0 Newcastle: What Eddie Howe said:
ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/1448/live/5b64a9b0-028e-11ef-b45a-3fdbb8bd2ecc.jpg
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, speaking to BBC Sport: "We were disappointing today. Never really got into our best fluent rhythm. "Disappointed especially with the first 60 minutes. We were nowhere near where we wanted to be. Disappointed with our technical performance today, we are usually better than that. On the penalty shout when Longstaff was fouled by Hughes in the box: "The penalty is a 50/50 call, it went against us." On Callum Wilson coming back from injury: "Callum's return is more than welcome and he gave us a different dimension when he came on today." "There is a big opportunity for us, we can't let [our season] peter out and we've got a big chance to quickly bounce back [on Saturday at home to Sheffield United]. Eddie Howe also said:Newcastle manager Eddie Howe believes that the 11 day gap between the Magpies' win over Tottenham and their defeat by Crystal Palace could have played a part in their performance. Howe said he thought his side looked "rusty" and was disappointed in his side who had just two shots on target in the second half. "We worked during the gap to not have an adverse performance. Its not an excuse," he said. "Maybe the gap did hamper us, we looked rusty in aspects of our game. "We gave the ball away too much, we looked reluctant to shoot around their goal which baffled me." Newcastle had been in good form coming into the game, picking up 10 points from their previous three matches. They are still on the hunt for European football and Howe said he has spoken to his side about how important it will be to pick up points away from home.

Saturday 27th April 2024 - Premier League
Newcastle United 5 (Isak 26, 61, Bruno Guimarães 54, Osborn 65 og, Wilson 72) Sheffield United 1
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/976/cpsprodpb/14B2F/production/_133238748_gettyimages-2149867451.jpg Alexander Isak's second-half penalty was his 23rd goal of the campaign in all competitions
Report By Matthew Howarth, BBC Sport.Sheffield United's relegation from the Premier League was confirmed as Newcastle recovered from a sluggish start to thrash Chris Wilder's side at St James' Park. Anel Ahmedhodzic gave the visitors a deserved early lead, nodding home Gustavo Hamer's inswinging cross from close range. The Blades carved out several opportunities to double their advantage as Newcastle struggled to gain a grip on proceedings, but the home side were level when Alexander Isak drilled home from Jacob Murphy's pass in the 26th minute. Ben Brereton Diaz had a goal-bound shot blocked by Dan Burn and Mason Holgate headed against the woodwork on the half-hour mark, but the visitors fell behind early in the second half when Bruno Guimaraes steered Anthony Gordon's delivery into the far corner. Isak registered his 23rd goal of the season from the penalty spot after Gordon was brought down by Holgate, before the unfortunate Ben Osborn bundled into his own net for Newcastle's fourth. Callum Wilson came off the bench for the hosts to score his first top-flight goal since October. Sheffield United were awarded a late penalty, but the decision was overturned by the video assistant referee who ruled Magpies substitute Alex Murphy had won the ball in a challenge with Jayden Bogle. The defeat leaves the Blades 10 points adrift of safety with only three games remaining, while Newcastle stay seventh and are well placed to secure a spot in Europe next season. Newcastle 5-1 Sheff Utd: What Eddie Howe said: ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/ab59/live/470208c0-f346-11ee-a92d-4dea4f4b5a40.jpg Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has been speaking to BBC Match of the Day following the triumphant win: "Half-time was a big moment for us, because we had to regroup. It was a difficult first half because I thought Sheffield United played well. They were fighting for their lives - we knew that they would come here and have a right go. "It was a much improved second half display and, in the end, we fully deserved the win. We scored at a good time [in the second half] and were devastating at times. "He [Bruno Guimaraes] is very much part of my plans [for next season]. We have to showcase what we can offer him as a football club and hope that is enough to keep him. "Bruno is a special talent and he scored a big goal today. Hopefully he stays with us for many years." On the battle to secure European football for next season: "It would be a great achievement for us. I am very keen to build and maintain the momentum we have had in recent years. "Last season was a huge achievement to get Champions League football. "This season has been difficult with injuries, so if the players are able to achieve that [qualification for European football], I think it will be outstanding."

Do you think Eddie Howe's achievements are being overlooked this season? Good chances of European football with what has been a bare bones squad. Simon replied: It is the way of the modern game that Howe was lauded last season when he got Newcastle into the Champions League, but the same plaudits are not coming his way this season even though his side will probably finish in the top seven and secure some sort of European football. Funnily enough, if the seasons had been the other way round, people would be talking about what a solid job he has done with steady improvement. Yet, I suspect, given all the injuries he has had, Howe will be privately pretty pleased with how the campaign as a whole has gone. It is two decades since Newcastle last secured successive top half finishes. Even backed by Saudi PIF, that achievement is worthy of note. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/cf3f/live/6854a2c0-ed39-11ee-b4a9-d9fe27c1e1d3.jpg

Ken asked: What do you think are the odds of Newcastle holding on to Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak this summer? I feel we could really kick on with one or two quality additions to the current squad. Simon replied: It is going to be difficult to keep both for two reasons. First, they have both proved themselves capable of playing at the highest level and while Newcastle’s Champions League hopes are not completely over, it would require both an improbable sequence of European results and Tottenham repeatedly losing games, which I don't think it realistic. Then we come back to the old profit and sustainability question. In order to raise money to reinforce Eddie Howe’s squad and offer bigger contracts, players need to be sold. Which ones can generate the most profit? That tends to be homegrown players as they did not cost a transfer fee. But Isak and Guimaraes are two of Newcastle’s most valuable assets. And there are bound to be offers for them. It is a tricky one as I doubt Howe would want to sell, but if Newcastle keep them both, they will have done very well. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/8d5c/live/24c61270-0583-11ef-8300-7d331f287251.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/news/611/cpsprodpb/1bca/live/d1bc3b40-03b6-11ef-90bc-51a31677bb51.jpg

Here are some of your answers:
Newcastle fans
Tom: Strange game. Sheffield United absolutely flying out of the blocks and going for it. Big Dan Burn kept us in the game in the first half. He looks much more comfortable at centre-back than when he is stuck on the left. There was a complete transition in the second half, with Newcastle bombing forward at every opportunity and looking like scoring. Was there an interesting half-time talk? Simon: Very pleased to see us bounce back from a poor midweek performance. We dominated in the second half and it is positive that we are converting chances. I was really pleased, particularly, to see Bruno and Wilson on the scoresheet. We need to push forward and get as many points as possible in our final few games, but well done! Tant: With all of the injuries sustained this season, this team has shown real resilience under a world-class man manager in Eddie Howe. To be where they are now shows that, to a man, they are fighting for the boss. It was a difficult game today, but they showed great patience and belief in their own game plan to get the three points. Andrew: We started a bit like me when I had eaten too many lockdown chocolates... slowly and poorly! But we finished like me when I eat a bag of sugar followed by three bottles of energy drink... buzzing and excited! I think we will keep both Guimaraes and Isak this summer. Next year will be great, if this year was anything to go by! ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/62dd/live/284998d0-eda6-11ee-a930-59a48bbe87d0.jpg

Saturday 4th May 2024 - Premier League
Burnley 1 Newcastle United 4 (Wilson 19, S.Longstaff 35, Bruno Guimarães 40, Isak 55, Isak missed pen 52)
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/976/cpsprodpb/42DD/production/_133271171_newcastle-main.jpg Callum Wilson has scored six goals in his last six games against Burnley
Report By Shamoon Hafez, BBC Sport football news reporter at Turf Moor.Burnley are staring at a second Premier League relegation in three seasons after being humbled at Turf Moor by a rampant Newcastle United. Vincent Kompany's men won the Championship last term and had a glimmer of survival hope before Saturday's game, but following this wretched collapse at home and Nottingham Forest's 3-1 win at Sheffield United, they sit five points from safety with two games remaining. The Clarets started brightly but could not capitalise as Jacob Bruun Larsen's effort in the third minute was smothered by Martin Dubravka, while Kompany was left incensed after referee Anthony Taylor did not award a penalty for Bruno Guimaraes' shove on Lorenz Assignon in the box. The visitors took the lead with their first attack of the game as Callum Wilson reacted quickest to slot in after Arijanet Muric parried Alexander Isak's effort back into the danger area. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/f658/live/427f4870-0a3f-11ef-9517-0f5643a5629b.jpg Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "A really good performance, we knew Burnley would be on it, it was a big game for them. It's an intimidating place to come but when we got control of the game and started to settle, I thought we showed our we showed our quality and scored four great goals. "Tactically we tweaked things around and I was really pleased to see we still gelled together. A really good performance. A lot of pace, a lot of quality but you need it to gel for the performance to be as strong as you want it to be." On Alexander Isak: "I say it very week. An outstanding talent. Technically gifted, pace, took his goal well today. He'll be disappointed with his penalty but that's just one of those things. Another really good display, I thought him and Callum Wilson looked really well again today, especially in the transitions." On poor away form: "We've been fighting that, determined to change our away form and be more consistent. Away one against Crystal Palace was poor. Today was a much better performance, a much better feel around the group. We know we've got goals, we have to defend better but it was big step forward today." On the European places: "We're in there there fighting and scrapping. Nothing will be decided today, it puts us in a better position. We've got three big games coming up."

Here are some of your answers: Newcastle fans Simon: Very positive team performance, We managed the game well and were quick and strong going forward. Given our injuries, particularly in defence, the back row performed well. Dan Burn is in form in his more natural centre back role. I am feeling positive about our final few games and chase for sixth place. Well done team - Eddie, staff and above all fans. Kegs: Cracking performance. [Jacob] Murphy had probably his best game for the club. The whole team stepped up and we looked so dangerous when attacking. The goals are flowing at just the right time of the season. Liam: Eddie Howe is more a manager of the year candidate this season than last. In contention for top five, with a threadbare squad and the most lost minutes due to injury and missing players in a season is incredible. If we get above media darling Ange's [Postecoglou] Spurs, he's pulled off one of the greatest seasons ever. Geoff: This is what we’ve been waiting for - a rampant Newcastle team. In a mood like this they are difficult to contain but what a joy to watch. When all of our players are back, they will dominate no matter the opposition. Well done the Toon. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/6af6/live/1bc72fa0-0a43-11ef-be5d-ab5073365c69.jpg

i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/09/05/article-0-0F4B879D00000578-976_634x520.jpgAlan Shearer is the greatest goalscorer in Premier League history, with 260 goals to his name across four years with Blackburn Rovers and ten with his boyhood club Newcastle United. His clinical nature saw him set a joint-record for most goals scored in a single Premier League season in the 1994/95 campaign, which was eventually broken by Erling Haaland in 2023. Shearer was also a superb penalty kick taker and throughout his 18-year career, he took 78 spot-kicks and scored 72 of them, which gives him a superb 92% success rate. Perhaps rather fittingly, the final goal of his career was a ferociously-hit penalty away at Sunderland in April 2006, which helped his beloved Newcastle record a dominant 4-1 victory over their arch rivals. Alan Shearer's penalty record - Penalty success rate - 92% Penalties taken - 78 Penalties scored - 72 Penalties missed - 6 Clubs: Southampton, Blackburn, Newcastle United Country: England First penalty scored - Southampton 2-1 QPR, 4th April 1992 Final penalty scored - Sunderland 1-4 Newcastle United, 17th April 2006 Key Statistic: Alan Shearer has taken & scored the most penalties in Premier League history, 56 out of 65 for both Blackburn and Newcastle.
