Report by Harry Poole, BBC Sport journalist.Newcastle dropped points in their pursuit of European football as Brighton spoiled their final home match of the Premier League season by earning a draw at St James’ Park. Sean Longstaff cancelled out Joel Veltman's opener on the stroke of half-time to ensure Newcastle scored in every one of their home league fixtures in a top-flight season for the first time since 1958-59. Welcomed to the pitch by an impressive pre-match flag display from the home support, Newcastle dominated the early stages - and much of the game from there. But it was the visitors, offering a threat on the counter, who took an 18th-minute lead when Veltman struck at close range after Newcastle failed to clear a corner. Newcastle were rewarded for their persistence when Longstaff steered in from Elliot Anderson’s cut-back, following great work by the always-lively Anthony Gordon. However, with Gordon's late finish ruled out for offside, Eddie Howe’s side failed to find a winner in the second half to leave their hopes of qualifying for some form of European football in the balance. After fifth-placed Tottenham moved six points clear with victory over Burnley, Newcastle must now watch as Chelsea and Manchester United aim to move level on points with them when they play later this weekend. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/9cb1/live/3dc73800-0fb8-11ef-9efa-171b2a928640.jpg

Eddie Howe spoke to BBC Sport after Newcastle's draw with Brighton: "Tough game, we knew it would be, Brighton are always difficult opponents. "I don't think we hit the heights we needed to win it but, if anyone was going to, I thought it would be us. "Poor goal [to concede] from us, we did start well, we were progressive and out of nothing they take the lead. I'm just disappointed with our product around the box and there probably weren't enough clear-cut chances. "Without a doubt the scene, the environment created by the supporters [has contributed to good home record]. Even when Brighton scored they got right behind the team but we just couldn't find that winning goal. They have made this place a really difficult place to play. This season the crowd have taken it to another level. "If you're not going to win the game, the draw for us is really important. I think it could be a valuable point for us."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/2f7f/live/95709000-0915-11ef-bee9-6125e244a4cd.jpgWe asked for your views on Saturday's match between Newcastle and Brighton.
Here are some of your answers:
Newcastle fans
John: It seems that Newcastle are unable to play well for 90 minutes. It's either a good first half and a bad second half or the other way round. Too many look like they've run out of steam. At least some bodies are starting to reappear but they're short of match fitness. Joe: I hope Almiron has played his last game for NUFC - why you'd dive in that situation is beyond me. Could cost us Europe. Richard: One of those games where you know you ought to have won it but the ball just wouldn't go in the back of the net. I'm not sure I'd even say we were slow or off the pace - it was just not going to happen. I can't fault the effort of the team as they tried but Brighton just held firm, alas. You'll get games like this and at least Europe is still possible.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/a637/live/df2a3db0-112e-11ef-bee9-6125e244a4cd.jpgBBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty is answering all of your footballing questions.
Graham asked: Who should Eddie Howe sell to get funds for Newcastle in the summer? I think Trippier, Wilson, Longstaff and Almiron should go. Phil answered: Tough decisions ahead in this regard, Graham, but they must build a wall around Anthony Gordon and Aleksandar Isak. Same with Bruno Guimaraes, unless they get that £100m offer towards the end of June that would activate a release clause. As for who to sell, I think Callum Wilson is an obvious contender given his age and injury record, while Miguel Almiron could be considered if a decent offer comes in. Newcastle do have to bring money in so that might make Sean Longstaff vulnerable, especially with Sandro Tonali coming back from his suspension. I would hesitate to sell Kieran Trippier purely because of his versatility and leadership qualities – but money does talk.

Sunday 19th May 2024 - Premier League - Final Day Result
Brentford 2 (Janelt 48, Wissa 70) Newcastle United 4 (Barnes 21, Murphy 36, Isak 38, Bruno Guimarães 78)
ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/22a7/live/fb293d90-160b-11ef-976f-87c9f89e656e.jpg
ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/ae1b/live/8f677b40-15f1-11ef-83a0-dfef3bf45a85.jpg Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, speaking to BBC Match of the Day after the 4-2 win at Brentford: "It summed up our season. We weren't totally secure at the back, but great credit to the players. They've done their job - now we wait and see. "We anticipated after losing against Manchester United that our control of the [European] situation had gone. It's never a nice situation, but whatever happens, happens. "We have issues to solve defensively. If we can do that, next season could be another season of really strong performances. This was a season that could have been better, but a good season overall. "We're a really united club. I think we're still moving forward, so there's a lot to be positive about." Report by Matthew Howarth, BBC Sport journalist.Newcastle face a wait to find out whether they will play European football next season after overcoming Brentford to secure seventh place in the Premier League. The Magpies' win means that a Manchester City victory over Manchester United in the FA Cup final next weekend will confirm their place in the 2024-25 Uefa Conference League. Brentford’s Ivan Toney had an early goal disallowed against his former club, but Eddie Howe’s team took the lead midway through the first half when Harvey Barnes nodded Bruno Guimaraes’ delivery into the roof of the net. Sean Longstaff had a close-range finish disallowed for offside, before Jacob Murphy converted Alexander Isak’s low cross at the far post following an error by Ethan Pinnock. Isak got on the scoresheet himself moments later, becoming the first Newcastle player since Alan Shearer in 2003-04 to score 21 goals in a Premier League season when he side-footed Guimaraes’ through ball into the far corner. Vitaly Janelt’s first goal since February 2023 reduced the arrears early in the second half, and Yoanne Wissa added a second for Brentford with a fabulous long-range strike into the far corner. But Guimaraes all but ended the Bees' hopes of salvaging anything from the game with 13 minutes remaining, firing home the rebound after Mark Flekken had saved Isak's free-kick. "It summed up our season," Howe told BBC Match of the Day afterwards. "We weren't totally secure at the back, but great credit to the players. They've done their job - now we wait and see. "We anticipated after losing against Manchester United [on Wednesday] that our control of the [European] situation had gone. It’s never a nice situation, but whatever happens, happens." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/40c3/live/ca1ad550-0d47-11ef-82e8-cd354766a224.png

Your Newcastle player of the season is...Alexander Isak. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/658/cpsprodpb/f14d/live/cd081ed0-184b-11ef-b8b5-23defd9038d6.jpgHere's what Pete Davey from LoadedMag NUFC, external had to say about Isak when the shortlist was selected on 15th May... "He is ICE COLD. Isak has had a sensational first full season at Newcastle. Some 24 goals and counting in a season. He is the complete striker - technically perfect, lightning quick and he has developed a resilience to navigate himself past tricky defensive teams. The ice man will only get better!"

Crystal Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman, 49, has rejected an offer from Newcastle to replace Dan Ashworth in a similar role and will stay with the Eagles.

'No concerns' over calf injury - Kieran Trippier..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/7ef3/live/b8c56750-2180-11ef-9628-ff2abcc9602e.jpgNewcastle defender Kieran Trippier says the injury that has ruled him out for much of the final few months of the Premier League season is causing him "no concerns" as prepares to lead England out for their first pre-Euro 2024 friendly at St James' Park on Monday evening. Trippier was sidelined from early March to mid May with a calf problem but returned for the Magpies' final three league games and will captain the Three Lions for their first match in the city since 2005. "To be given the trust by Gareth is an amazing feeling," Tripper told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast. "I'm really proud and really looking forward to the game. "There's no concerns. It was disappointing with the injury at the time but I know in my head I've done everything right to get myself fit and available for firstly my club and then my country. As long as I know I've done that I'm happy. "I've had a really solid week training and I'm ready to go. "Pressure should be a privilege no matter if it's a friendly, a tournament, a qualifier. For England there is always going to be pressure but we've all been in pressure situations before with our clubs. "We shouldn't be shy to say we want to win the tournament. We're not saying that in an arrogant way. We've come so close over the past couple of tournaments so hopefully this is the one where we can go one step forward and bring it back to England."

'This kind of thing doesn't happen very often to Newcastle players'..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/3b57/live/f642db60-217d-11ef-9628-ff2abcc9602e.jpgFootball writer for the Mirror Simon Bird says the "brilliant honour" of captaining England at St James' Park is deserved for one of Gareth Southgate's "key lieutenants" Kieran Tripper. The Magpies defender will lead the Three Lions out at his home stadium against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday evening in the first of two pre-tournament friendlies before the start of Euro 2024 in Germany. "It's a brilliant honour for him [Tripper]," Bird told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast. "He's been a great servant for Newcastle and a key part of the relaunch of the club over the last two and a half to three years. "He's spoken really wonderfully about what it will mean to him and having his son next to him as well. "He's clearly one of Gareth Southgate's absolutely key lieutenants, he was always going to be there if he's fit. The injury dragged on a lot longer than Newcastle thought and we were led to believe. From that respect there was maybe a slight worry but the soundings we were getting were that he'll be back before the end of the season. "As long as that was the case he was always going to be here and a key part of the squad. "This kind of thing doesn't happen very often to Newcastle players or players from the north. The whole show moves to Wembley when England play so to have a game for England so close to a tournament in Newcastle, right up in the north, showcasing Trippier and what the fans can add to the occasion is a really good thing for the FA to have done." The fixture will be the first time England have played at St James' Park since 2005, and Bird believes it is a huge step for Newcastle in its development as a sporting city. "To bring the England team on the road again, even though it doesn't happen very often, is great," he added. "It will be massive for Newcastle. As a city which is desperate to put itself on the sporting map, it wants to be seen as a global sporting destination. "Obviously the football club in this period of growth under the Saudi ownership - they want to be seen as a club who punch their weight with the biggest in the country and do the things that the biggest clubs do. "Staging major international events is clearly a big tick in that regard."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/2f7f/live/95709000-0915-11ef-bee9-6125e244a4cd.jpgWe asked what you think should be the number one priority at Newcastle during the summer.
Here are some of your responses:
Graeme: The first thing we need to do is secure Bruno Guimaraes as a long-term Newcastle player so that Eddie Howe can shape the team around him. Marco: A replacement for Dan Ashworth would be good before we think about signing players. Nic: It absolutely has to be an upgraded right-winger. If we're serious about being in Europe every year we cannot start the season with Miguel Almiron as our first-choice right-winger. Jacob Murphy is an alright squad option but we need someone of Gordon's quality on the right side. Paul: New left-back, Dan Burn got caught out too many times with his lack of pace and gave silly fouls away in dangerous areas. He needs to be a centre-back. Peter: With European competition off the menu, this summer has to see a continuation of the young quality policy. Bring in talented youngsters who will push the first team, increase our squad depth and build for the next five seasons.

Roma and Atletico Madrid are also interested. Newcastle, Tottenham, Liverpool and West Ham, are interested in Feyenoord's 23-year-old Dutch defender Lutsharel Geertruida. Finally, Sweden striker Alexander Isak says he is enjoying himself at Newcastle United and has no thoughts about leaving. The 24-year-old has been linked with Arsenal.

The Magpies are refusing to offer above 30m euros (£25.4m) for the 23-year-old despite the Spanish club valuing him at 35m euros. Newcastle United and Bayern Munich were the first clubs to contact Crystal Palace as they look to sign 22-year-old French winger Michael Olise. Olise is believed to have a £60m release clause in his Palace contract but Newcastle may not be able to activate it as it only applies to clubs who have qualified for the Champions League. Chelsea and England Under-21 international Noni Madueke is also on the Magpies' shortlist as they look to target a new right-winger in the transfer window. Newcastle United are interested in signing 25-year-old Iceland winger Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson from Belgian club OH Leuven. AC Milan and England defender Fikayo Tomori, 26, is likely to reject any offer from Newcastle this summer.

We asked for your thoughts on Newcastle United agreeing to sign out-of-contract Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly as their first piece of summer transfer business.
Here are some of your comments:Scott: Great news that we are getting an experienced, versatile, Premier League defender on a free transfer. Added bonuses are his leadership qualities and understanding of Eddie Howe's management style. He is a serious upgrade on Paul Dummett without breaking into our summer transfer budget. This transfer gets five stars from me. Malcolm: Apart from a slight concern over his injury record, what is not to like? He knows what the league and the manager are about, he can play centre-half or left-back, he adds pace to the defence and he cost us nothing. Peter: Lloyd Kelly is a great signing in my opinion. We need quality and depth, at a good value, and I would say he is all of those things. We can then spend bigger in other areas. John: I don't really know much about him but I worry as to his contribution to the team if he is coming on a free from Bournemouth. Eddie Howe has been after him for sometime, so he must see something in him. Fraser: Kelly will certainly give Eddie Howe options at the back and he is versatile - but if Newcastle really do want to play with the big boys in the big leagues, there will have to be a shift towards high-end talented players to take us to the next level. The league positions don't lie - we finished where we deserved but we need something this season. Jack: Happy to have more depth at centre-back, which was always a position we needed to improve. Despite Schar's brilliance over the past two seasons, he is not getting any younger. Still, I can't imagine Kelly being first choice once Botman and Lascelles return.
