ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/f572/live/8724ec50-2993-11ef-a61c-2da1a89da6b0.jpgFormer Bournemouth defender Steven Cook feels the loss of Lloyd Kelly will be Newcastle's gain after the 25-year-old agreed a five-year deal at St James' Park. The defender, who can play as a left-back or left centre-half, joined the Cherries from Bristol City for £13m in 2019, when current Magpies boss Eddie Howe was in charge. Speaking to BBC Radio Solent, Cook said: "It's really disappointing to lose a quality player like Lloyd. He is physically excellent, a lovely footballer and he knows the club well. It's a shame, especially on a free transfer. "He is physically amazing, a specimen of a man, and technically a very good footballer. Very versatile as well. Newcastle are getting a great player and Bournemouth are losing one. "It's exciting for Lloyd going to a huge club like Newcastle. He's joining a manager and coaching staff he knows well and who will take his game to the next level." Kelly captained the side to promotion from the Championship in 2021-22, but struggled for game time last season and on occasion was jeered by home supporters. "He is probably thinking if he was to sign at Bournemouth it would be very difficult to leave because he would be warranting a huge fee so I think it's the timing – he can leave on a free and go to a huge club and test himself," Cook added. "Over the season Lloyd has had a bit of criticism from the Bournemouth fans and that stays with you. "Any captain that gets booed at home it is not going to sit too nicely. It would have disappointed Lloyd. He has been offered a way out and he has accepted that." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/4870/live/bffcb3b0-28ac-11ef-bb30-4b949fc56ef4.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/2f7f/live/95709000-0915-11ef-bee9-6125e244a4cd.jpgIf you could only buy one, sell one, and loan out one player at Newcastle United, who would you pick?
That was the question we asked you to answer, with the transfer window set to open on Friday.
Here are some of your thoughts:Edwin: Buy: Michael Olise - Olise, Gordon and Isak would make a front three capable of honours next year. Sell: Jeff Hendrick - after 25 appearances in four years, you would think the time has come for his sale with FFP breathing down our necks. Loan: Lewis Miley - Tonali's potential return might push him out and he needs to play regularly. Reece: Buy: Ferran Torres from Barcelona. Sell: Miguel Almiron. Loan: Harvey Barnes. Marcus: Buy: Serhou Guirassy - consistent, mature, experienced and can play as a central striker or out wide, so he would give us options with Isak. Sell: Callum Wilson - still deadly but too injury prone. Loan: Ciaran Thompson - a future starter who just needs more experience. Krishnan: Buy: Ademola Lookman from Atalanta or Lois Openda from RB Leipzig. Sell: Alexander Isak. Loan: Lewis Miley. Steve: Buy: Kalvin Phillips - if his wages could be agreed, a couple of months under Eddie Howe would see him grow into a totally different player. Sell: Callum Wilson. Loan: Sean Longstaff.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/821d/live/dda95d70-2a71-11ef-bd2f-21d471757b76.jpgNewcastle United defender Kieran Trippier says he will "always be ready" to play, whether that is at left-back or right-back. The 33-year-old is in Germany preparing for his fourth major tournament with England at Euro 2024. While the majority of his career has been spent as a right-back, his versatility and strong competition for places there for the Three Lions has brought him also out to the left-hand side. With questions over Luke Shaw's fitness and no other traditional left-back in the 26-man squad, Trippier may have to be deployed in that position once again. "It doesn't matter [which position]. If I play, if I don't play, if I play right-back, left-back, I'll always be ready," he told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast. "I like to bomb forward and put crosses in, but sometimes I need to adjust my game and maybe I'll be more defensive [at left back] and join in more. But for me it is just the same - the distances, checking your left shoulder instead of your right, the fine details. "If it's left-back, no problem, I'll give my best. But if I'm not playing, also the type of character that I am is that I'm always supportive of my team because ultimately, if you're not playing, we all want the same goal." "As I have said before, it is a privilege to wear the shirt [for England] whether I'm at left-back or right-back." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/bd01/live/2b79eca0-2a6c-11ef-959e-594012b59afc.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/640/cpsprodpb/ae95/live/005050c0-2e11-11ef-90be-b75b34b0bbb2.jpgIn an interview on The Overlap with former Premier League defender Gary Neville earlier this year, Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon gave an insight into his mental toughness and his love of books on psychology and sport. Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live's Steve Crossman at the England Euro 2024 camp on Tuesday, he revealed the book that has had the biggest impact on him is Winning by Tim Grover. The author is the former trainer of NBA legends Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. Gordon said: "That's an incredible book about mentality and the things you've got to go through to really succeed. It's basically saying you can do everything you feel like you can do and still come up short. But you won't have regrets then. "He's walking you through high-level sport. To be at the very top, things we go through every single day are tough and crazy sometimes. "Not a lot of people would know we go through so many different emotions. Then it's dealing with them and being composed and we still have to perform regardless of what's going on. "He's giving you ways to deal with that, so it helped me massively." Gordon told BBC Sport that he has three books with him in Germany: Dan Carter's The Art of Winning and Leadership; David Goggins' Never Finished; and Life Force by scientist Tony Robbins. On Life Force, Gordon explained: "[Manchester United goalkeeper] Tom Heaton was talking about Cristiano Ronaldo at the table the other day and said that was the book he was reading and suggested it to the United lads. "I was earwigging and thinking: 'If Ronaldo reads it, I'm going to have a little read and see if I can pick anything out!'"

Chelsea have enquired about Newcastle United's Alexander Isak but they would have to pay more than £115m to sign the 24-year-old Sweden striker. Newcastle are reluctant to see Isak leave and would rather sell Callum Wilson, with teams from England, Germany and Saudi Arabia interested in the 33-year-old England striker. Newcastle forward Yankuba Minteh has rejected a move to Lyon despite the French club agreeing a £40m fee for the 19-year-old Gambia international. Newcastle United have been told by AC Milan that only a fee of about £40m will be enough to sign their England defender Fikayo Tomori. Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has made it clear to the club's board that they should not be looking to cash in on 24-year-old Sweden striker Alexander Isak this summer, amid interest from Chelsea. Anthony Gordon's head has been turned by interest from Liverpool, but Newcastle United insist the 23-year-old England winger will not be sold. Liverpool remain interested in Gordon and could make another move to sign him this summer. A Saudi Pro League club is in talks with Newcastle over a deal for 30-year-old Paraguay forward Miguel Almiron. Newcastle are interested in Nottingham Forest's 22-year-old Sweden forward Anthony Elanga. Newcastle United's move for Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, 27, has collapsed after the Magpies were unable to sell their own English striker Callum Wilson.

'Elliot Anderson sale has upset some supporters'..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/bb3e/live/d0cd51a0-385f-11ef-9fbc-9deb2c2019a8.jpgBBC Radio Newcastle's Matthew Raisbeck has been explaining how Magpies supporters are feeling after homegrown talent Elliot Anderson signed for Nottingham Forest on Monday. The 21-year-old came through Newcastle United's academy and went on to make 55 first-team appearances under Eddie Howe. "It has been a chaotic few days," Raisbeck told BBC Radio Nottingham's Shut Up And Show More Football podcast. "The club needed to sell players to comply with profit and sustainability regulations. "There were a few players who were close to leaving the club, but for Elliot Anderson to be sacrificed by Newcastle - being a Geordie and having come through the academy - is a decision which hurts. "It has upset some of the supporters because they want to see players coming through the academy - that already doesn't happen enough at Newcastle. "Anderson had made an impact, but he also had some injuries and there was a lot of competition in midfield. When he got a run of games at the end of the season, he looked really good. "He is competitive, energetic and versatile. He is technically very capable. You can see he has good habits and obviously has been coached well at the academy, but there is also a lot of natural ability there. "The club and the supporters felt Elliot had a high ceiling. "Newcastle were reluctant to let him go - but they really had no choice given there was this soft deadline approaching on 30th June."

Here are some of your answers:
Mark: Anderson leaving for around £35m is good business. It's a shame to see academy prospects leave though. Gordon should not be allowed to leave, with Bruno and Isak they are our future, the team should be built around them. Tony: I'd rather sell fringe players than suffer a points deduction for breach of FFP. Yes sympathy for Elliot Anderson a Whitley Bay lad, but his new financial package will more than make up for a sense of being surplus to requirements. Darren: Selling Gordon would’ve been the sort of thing Ashley would’ve done. Us fans were under the impression that our new owners are here to compete, how can we do that if there’s talk of selling one of, if not our most outstanding players we’ve had in a while? The majority of our attacking play goes through Gordon. The club need to hold on to him. John: Anderson is good business but letting Gordon go is utter madness. If the team doesn't have quality players like him then they will never attract quality players or win anything. Jonny: The sale of Anderson, while disappointing, is understandable and something we need to just get used to. Nobody wanted to see Andy Carroll leave but when the price is right - it’s right. At least this time we know the money will be used well. As for Gordon, the idea of losing him is absolutely ludicrous. He is going to be a huge, huge star!

Newcastle United have signed Lewis Hall on a permanent contract following the defender's successful loan spell last season...ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/2460/live/9d1dd870-378d-11ef-9bca-0db727f63d54.jpgThe left-back made 22 appearances for Eddie Howe's side throughout the 2023-24 campaign, scoring two goals. After signing his long-term deal, the Chelsea academy graduate and boyhood Magpies supporter said: "When you pull on the black and white shirt, there is no feeling like it - and playing in front of the best supporters in the country is extra special for me, being a Toon fan. "I gained a lot of experience last season and, with the squad we have, we will be looking to push on even further this season. I can't wait to get started." Howe added: "Lewis was a very good addition to our squad last season - we have been delighted with his progress and his contribution to the team. "As well as being a talented player, he has a great attitude towards the game and his own development. I'm excited for this next part of his journey."

Newcastle have also signed 37-year-old goalkeeper John Ruddy following his contract expiration at Birmingham City.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/195e/live/a3e89c00-3795-11ef-b708-85b42dc2fee7.jpgRuddy, who joins on a one-year deal, said: "It was an opportunity I couldn't turn down. "It is a huge club which is only going one way and to be a part of that, however big or small, is going to be very pleasing and very exciting." Howe added: "He has a huge amount of experience and adds a level of support and competition that we need." The announcement follows the arrival of goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos from Nottingham Forest earlier on Monday. How do you feel about Newcastle's transfer activity over the past few days, Magpies fans?

Newcastle co-owners set to leave St James' Park..by Nizaar Kinsella, BBC Sport football news reporter.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/7e49/live/f0e9e030-3ed5-11ef-bc90-15318ac50ac3.jpgAmanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi are expected to release a statement after it was widely reported the pair are set to leave Newcastle. The former co-owners, who are part of PCP Capital Partners, initially had 10 per cent stakes in Newcastle, but have since sold their reduced six per cent shares to leave the club. They were instrumental in the day-to-day running of the club and will now take time to digest their exit before communicating with the fan base. It is believed Staveley is open to another role in football.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/3830/live/7ea0f000-3ed4-11ef-b74c-bb483a802c97.jpgReport by Matthew Raisbeck, BBC Radio Newcastle reporter.Having been convinced of its huge potential, Amanda Staveley actually made an unsuccessful attempt to buy Newcastle United herself during the 2017-18 season. She returned as the public face of the Saudi Arabian-backed bid that, after lengthy delays, eventually went through in October 2021. Newcastle desperately needed a fresh approach after 14 years under Mike Ashley. Staveley and her husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi got straight to work and drove much of the change in the early days of the Saudi ownership, including the appointment of Eddie Howe and some key signings in the January 2022 transfer window. They have been positive and popular presence at matches, and their availability and willingness to communicate with supporters is a far cry from the coldness of the Ashley era. Staveley has also worked closely with the women's team, who turned professional last summer and, after back-to-back promotions, will play in the Championship next season. They took a 10 per cent stake in the Magpies in 2021, but their share was diluted earlier this year to six per cent. Could that have been an indication they were preparing to step back? Staveley and Ghodoussi have been significant figures during an exciting era on Tyneside. They will leave Newcastle United in considerably better health than they found it - thanks in no small part to their efforts over the last three years. That work is certainly appreciated by the fanbase.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/2f7f/live/95709000-0915-11ef-bee9-6125e244a4cd.jpgWe asked for your views on Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe being linked with the newly vacant England manager role.
Here are some of your thoughts:Ward: Eddie needs to stay and even he has said as much. He has only just started a multi-year project at Newcastle and he needs to be there to reap the rewards of laying some strong foundations. When a parallel situation occurred with Dan Ashworth's premature departure, he made the same point. So I fully expect him to stick to his principles and stay. Helen: I will be absolutely gutted if Eddie becomes England boss, even though I think he would be brilliant. He would bring some attacking flair to the team, but he has unfinished business at Newcastle. I hope he will think of the England job as something he would consider in the future but not just yet. Chris: There will always be change in football and managers are the one constant in that world of change. They are forever moving on. If we lose Eddie, I am confident our club will find a very suitable and able replacement. We must have belief in our board and hope they are ready to act if necessary. Sandra: Although I think Howe would be good for England, I don't want him to leave Newcastle as I could see the tremendous improvement in the club over the past two years. We could, with investment and the right players, win the Premier League (as long as he doesn't sell Gordon, Guimaraes, Schar, Pope, Trippier and Isak). He is the best manager we have ever had. Jack: While he is an amazing manager, his style is not suited to the national set-up. He likes to develop players on the training pitch and he won't have enough time to be able to establish his style of player, which he has become synonymous for, in the England squad. Tom: He has made a great impact in Newcastle signings and he could leave with his head held high. But it would be a shame to see him go before solidifying the squad and before any knockout Champions League football is played. On the other hand, I would welcome another English manager to leave his mark on the national side. Paul: I think Eddie would be perfect for the England job. His job at Newcastle is going to become increasingly frustrating because of the nonsense of FFP. He will not be able to build a squad to satisfy his and the club's ambition of becoming one of top clubs in world football. If the FA come knocking, I think Eddie should accept the offer and take the job. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/f38e/live/bac65cb0-4388-11ef-9219-93a4ca544fb6.jpg

You might not want him to leave - and he still hasn't left - but you gave us a few suggestions.
Here are some of your thoughts:
Andrew: If Howe goes, and I hope he doesn't, then Graham Potter would be my choice of the readily available managers. I think Steve Cooper would have been the best replacement but he has been snapped up by Leicester. In my ideal world, the FA would appoint Cooper as England boss! Tom: Thomas Tuchel for me. He won the Champions League at Chelsea and he would deliver trophies at Newcastle! Greg: Jurgen Klopp! We are enjoying a renaissance in attacking football under Howe and, while I would prefer him to stay, any replacement should be from the same school of thought: fast-paced, front-footed and passionate football! Paul: Paul Mitchell has been brought in with Mauricio Pochettino in mind - I'm sure of it. They will probably link up again but it depends on whether Howe wants to go. I hope he stays but, if he does go, I would be happy with Pochettino. Alastair: Zinedine Zidane or Thomas Tuchel - we have to go big! Pete: I would have liked Jose Mourinho but he has just joined Fenerbahce. Of the managers currently available, Pochettino or Tuchel would be good. I would love Rafa Benitez to get another chance with us with some financial support, and the backing of the board and fans, because he didn't get that when he was here before. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/66c9/live/c5871ab0-4421-11ef-a173-650f2ea14a44.jpg

The Magpies are hoping to beat West Ham United and Juventus to the signing of France defender Jean-Clair Todibo, 24, after holding talks with Nice. Serbian youngster Miodrag Pivas joins Magpies..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/e272/live/b2846760-467e-11ef-be83-8b45411699e2.jpgNewcastle United have signed Serbia youth defender Miodrag Pivas from Jedinstvo. The 19-year-old also operated in defensive midfield last season, helping his side win promotion to the Serbian Super Liga. "It's absolutely unbelievable to join such a big club," Pivas told Newcastle's official website, external. "I see the young players have developed very well here and I would like to do the same - to develop and get into Newcastle's first team. I'm very excited and I can't wait to begin." Magpies chief executive Darren Eales described Pivas as "a promising talent with high potential". "We look forward to supporting his development at this important stage of his career," he added.
