Newcastle United post £73m loss for 2022-23 season..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/12/ffdf25ea-5053-4710-978f-7587abba86ed.jpg
Newcastle United could still have to sell players to their rivals, their chief executive has warned, after they posted a £73m loss for the 2022-23 season. The Magpies were taken over by the Saudi Public Investment Fund in October 2021 when 19th in the Premier League. They finished fourth last season and qualified for the Champions League. However, Darren Eales said "there is a long way to go" for the club to match the revenue of the biggest sides. "To put it into perspective, we want to be a top-six sustainable club and Tottenham's latest accounts available [showed the total revenue] was £440m. We are at £250m, so there is a big step even to the lower end of the top six," he added. "We have also seen that Manchester City are £710m in revenue in their latest accounts. There is a long way to go in growing those revenues." It was also revealed the club had loaned co-owner Amanda Staveley £600,000 in November 2022 "in respect of certain legal fees", which was interest free and had not been repaid as of 30 June 2023. A further loan of £659,056 was made on 31st August 2023. The financial figures for last season showed a £70m rise in turnover to £250m, but the club recorded a post-tax loss of £73.4m for the 12 months ending 30 June 2023, "driven mostly by the continued investment in the playing squad". However, the figures earned from their involvement in the Champions League were not included - and will be in their next accounts. Forward Alexander Isak joined in a £63m move in August 2022 with winger Anthony Gordon moving from Everton in a transfer worth £45m in January 2023. That came after goalkeeper Nick Pope, defenders Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Matt Targett and Sven Botman, midfielder Bruno Guimaraes and forward Chris Wood were all signed in the first seven months of 2022. More than £400m has been spent on players since the takeover, but further investment could rest upon selling a key asset to free up funds with regards to Financial Fair Play, which limits the losses that clubs can make. Botman, Guimaraes and Isak have been rumoured as potential targets for clubs, with Newcastle out of the Champions League and down in ninth in the Premier League table. "Any decision we make will always be against the backdrop of the medium to long-term benefit for the club," added Eales. "It's difficult to say specifically on certain players, but I can say that, if we're going to get to where we want to get to, at times it is necessary to trade your players." Eales also defended boss Eddie Howe, who led the club away from the relegation zone in his first season in charge before qualifying for the Champions League by finishing ahead of Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea last season. "There's no doubt we have had real progression on the pitch and Eddie is a huge, integral part of that," said Eales. "We hope he is going to be with us for many years to come." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/A7C3/production/_132274924_gettyimages-1802025456.jpgNewcastle United co-owners Amanda Staveley and Jamie Reuben

'To sign players, we may have to sell players'..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/cfb8/live/d87e1a30-b135-11ee-a24d-5371dfbad329.jpgNewcastle manager Eddie Howe has said selling players "is part of every club's DNA now" to ensure they stay within the limits of Financial Fair Play regulations. On Thursday, the Magpies reported a loss in excess of £73m for the 2022-23 season, leading to speculation that players could be sold to fund future investment. Speaking about that possibility upon the release of those figures, chief executive Darren Eales said: "Any decision we make will always be against the backdrop of the medium to long-term benefit for the club. It's difficult to say specifically on certain players, but I can say that if we're going to get to where we want to get to, at times it is necessary to trade your players." At his news conference on Friday, Howe said: "We do discuss things on a regular basis so there's no surprise to me. We've been working under Financial Fair Play restrictions for a long time. "Selling players is part of every football club's DNA now. It has to be with Financial Fair Play rules because we have to generate more income. To sign players, we may have to sell players. It doesn't necessarily mean 'star' players, whatever is meant by that term, but certainly selling players will be something this club will do now for the foreseeable future." Meanwhile, Howe has rejected reports that Newcastle had made an enquiry for Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke. He added: "It's a frustrating story for me because I love Dominic Solanke, I signed him [for Bournemouth] and rate him very highly, but we have not made an enquiry for him and we don't have the ability to sign a player of that level. "We're not shutting the door on everything, certainly as I sit here now we're not going to bring anybody in [in January], but that may change as the window unfolds."

SATURDAY 13th JANUARY 2024 - PREMIER LEAGUE
Newcastle United 2 (Isak 35, Gordon 37) Manchester City 3 (Bernardo silva 26, De Bruyne 74, Bobb 90+1)
ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/1440/cpsprodpb/1868B/production/_132297999_mancity3.jpg
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1B43/production/_132297960_gettyimages-1930379023.jpg Kevin de Bruyne's goal was his first of the seasonThe Norwegian, 20, latched on to a superb lofted pass from fellow substitute Kevin de Bruyne and showed superb footwork to take the ball pass Martin Dubravka and tap into the empty net. It rounded off a brilliant game that saw both sides dominate periods, but City controlled the second half and showed the fight and quality to seal what could be a huge win come the end of the season. While Bobb enjoyed his first Premier League goal, the success was sparked by De Bruyne. Just four minutes and 35 seconds after he came off the bench, the Belgian found space in between the home defence and midfield before sweeping a finish into the far corner. Bernardo Silva had put the Premier League champions ahead in the 26th minute, meeting Kyle Walker's right-wing cross with an audacious backheel, before two goals in three minutes put Newcastle in charge. First, Alexander Isak collected a sweeping Bruno Guimaraes pass before curling past City's reserve keeper Stefan Ortega - who had replaced the injured Ederson - and into the top corner for his fourth goal in four games. Then, Anthony Gordon was released down the left and he took advantage of Walker backing off to spectacularly curl into the bottom corner and send the home fans into raptures. City had only lost once in 72 Premier League games when taking the lead and that was under serious threat until their talisman De Bruyne continued his comeback from injury with a top-class strike and a wonderful assist for Bobb. Boss Pep Guardiola and the entire City squad, including substitutes, celebrated emphatically at the full-time whistle as the reigning champions savoured a third successive league win and sixth in all competitions. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/13/07eade20-cfdf-4829-ae87-b2874a9a2fc9.pngNewcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to TNT Sports: "It was a difficult second half. We were a real threat and it was end-to-end. The second half was more difficult." On Man City: "We had chances in the game. We had a slow start but we could have scored more. Their quality told in the end. De Bruyne is obviously a world class player." Four losses in a row: "We just have to continue in the same form as today really. There's not a lot wrong with our performances. You can see today we are a tip team. The group is in a good place, I don't see any negativity. I see hurt because we aren't winning and that's what we're here to do. We had a good win in the FA Cup last week and that boosted us for today." Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to MOTD: "It was a really good first-half performance from us. End-to-end, brave football. We probably ran out of gas in the second half. "It looked like we had done enough for the point, with the way we defended you'd have backed us to see it out but we couldn't do it in the end. "We are limited from the bench at the moment. The lads gave a lot in the first half, we looked really good, we just probably couldn't sustain it. "That's the quality they have, but you have to find a way. You just hoped we could see it out and get a really good point. "In the first half, physically we were causing them problems. We were stretching their back line. We had chances when we got the lead were in a really good moment but we couldn't sustain it. "The frustration from us you could see what we can be at times but we haven't been able to put that together for the last month and it has cost us. You accept that but of course we need some players back and to lift the group."

Newcastle United player Joelinton's home burgled..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/5AE3/production/_130076232_gettyimages-1486879005.jpgBurglars have targeted the home of Newcastle United footballer Joelinton. Northumbria Police officers were called at about 7.30pm on Saturday evening. The homeowner, who the force is not naming, reported there were three men inside the house in Darras Hall, Northumberland. A force spokesperson said: "Thankfully the homeowner was not home but had received a security alert on their phone and immediately reported concerns to police." Officers were sent to the house, but anyone who had been inside had left, the force said. Newcastle were playing Manchester City at St James' Park at the time. Joelinton is currently injured, but was at the ground. It comes only weeks after a break-in at the home of Manchester City player Jack Grealish. His house was targeted by thieves on 27th December while he was playing against Everton in Liverpool. Northumbria Police is asking anyone with information to contact the force.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/c616/live/5c2ece20-9c1d-11ee-91bf-230bfab3fcba.jpgWe asked you for your thoughts on Saturday's match between Newcastle and Manchester City.
Here are some of your comments:
Newcastle fans
Josh: I thought us sitting back started way too early and having that and Kevin de Bruyne coming on, was only going to make it harder. I'm disappointed we didn't get anything from the game but Man City are the benchmark and this match shows why. Gordon: A great game and a good performance by Newcastle. The defence and Martin Dubravka were resolute and our forward play at times was excellent. Wonderful strikes by Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon. Unfortunately City had the outstanding De Bruyne. Keep going lads - you did us proud. Liam: Another good performance for 60 minutes but we cannot seem to see out games. A mixture of fatigue and inability to make impactful substitutions has been our Achilles heel since November. Desperately need the likes of Harvey Barnes, Joe Willock, Jacob Murphy and Callum Wilson back to give us the ability to rotate and freshen up the team and give us more staying power in games. Kegs: For all our endeavours on the counter attack, Newcastle desperately need a defensive midfielder. Our current midfielders all bomb forward at the same time, leaving our defence cruelly exposed. We don’t have anyone in our team/squad, who will sit and protect our back four. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/97a5/live/da3b6400-b2c9-11ee-a64d-cba2f2fcc512.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/7D8E/production/_129324123_kalvinphillips.pngNewcastle United are scouring Europe for possible midfield reinforcements with a move for priority target Phillips entirely dependent on the player convincing Manchester City to lower their demands. The Magpies sent their head of scouting to watch Atalanta midfielder Ederson in a 5-0 win against Frosinone but the Italian club have no interest in selling the 24-year-old Brazilian in January. Arsenal have also been handed a boost in their January pursuit of Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, 26, following reports that Newcastle are searching for his replacement.

Arsenal have rebuffed approaches for Emile Smith Rowe, 23, with Aston Villa, West Ham and Newcastle all expressing an interest in the England midfielder, who has started just two games in all competitions this season. Newcastle and Liverpool are both keeping watch on Atalanta's 24-year-old Brazilian midfielder Ederson. Bayern Munich will attempt to prise England defender Kieran Trippier, 33, away from Newcastle this month, with Thomas Tuchel keen on the right-back.

Trippier is keen to join Bayern this January if they can agree a deal with the Magpies. Newcastle have also rejected a loan enquiry for England striker Callum Wilson from Atletico Madrid but could sell the 31-year-old if a permanent offer is made. Newcastle and Borussia Dortmund will try to sign 18-year-old French attacking midfielder Desire Doue from Rennes before the January transfer window closes.

Trippier and Wilson will not agitate for a move but Bayern will test Newcastle's resolve by making an improved bid for the full-back after an initial offer was rejected. Newcastle want 15m euros (£12.9m) from Bayern Munich for Trippier, while the German club only want a loan deal.

Kieran Trippier: Newcastle reject Bayern Munich offer for England right-back..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/7B48/production/_123306513_gettyimages-1238475315.jpgNewcastle United have turned down a 15m euro (£12.8m) offer from Bayern Munich for right-back Kieran Trippier. The England international, 33, joined Newcastle from Spanish side Atletico Madrid for £12m in January 2022. He was Newcastle's first signing since their Saudi Arabian-backed takeover, and the first under manager Eddie Howe. Ex-Burnley and Spurs defender Trippier has made 62 Premier League appearances for the Magpies and has regularly captained Howe's side this season. Earlier this month, Newcastle chief executive Darren Eales said the club may have to sell players in order to comply with the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules. Striker Callum Wilson has been linked with a move to AC Milan and winger Miguel Almiron is reportedly a target for Saudi Pro League side Al-Shabab. German champions Bayern are keen on signing a right-back in the January transfer window. They have signed England defender Eric Dier from Tottenham on loan for the rest of the season, joining up with former team-mate Harry Kane, who also played alongside Trippier at Spurs. Newcastle have had to deal with several key absences this season, with nine first-team players currently out through injury or illness. Trippier, who has 46 caps for England, has played all but two of Newcastle's 21 Premier League games this season, with Howe's side 10th.

Newcastle midfielder Miguel Almiron is a target for Saudi Arabian club Al-Shabab but the 29-year-old Paraguay international has told the Magpies he does not want to leave. Everton are also open to selling £60m-rated midfielder Amadou Onana, 22, this month, with Newcastle interested. Newcastle's Slovakian goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, 35, is considering his future at the club this summer.

Why Newcastle are interested in Onana..by Joe Nelson, BBC Sport.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/f10e/live/19e34090-bb77-11ee-b2e8-3dafef4cc959.jpgFor all the departures that have been touted this month at Newcastle, one of the potential incomings that has been mentioned is Everton midfielder Amadou Onana. The 6ft 4in powerhouse would certainly fill the void left by Joelinton, who has been ruled out until May after successful surgery. The energy and sheer dominance that Joelinton provides in midfield needs to be accounted for, and Onana seems like the perfect acquisition for Eddie Howe's team. The Senegal international has gone from strength to strength on Merseyside and combines his imposing stature with an eye for a pass and superb technique. Howe likes his players to be athletic but he also wants those in his team to be able to execute his tactics perfectly and with high quality. Onana ticks both boxes in this case. Newcastle's midfielders, anchored brilliantly by Bruno Guimaraes, have to be tireless and able to impact in both boxes. Onana has shown this capability on countless occasions for Everton, and it will be interesting to see whether he sticks with the Toffees come the end of the month.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/0e16/live/15fb9dd0-bac1-11ee-ace0-c35c1b4f6d82.jpgWe asked you about how much of an impact Joelinton's injury will have for the Magpies.
Here are some of your answers:
Craig: Massive miss for Newcastle. His strength and passion is huge for us. But, we are used to missing players now. It's been such a disappointing season, and realistically all we have to play for now is the FA Cup. Just want this season to end, re-group and start to look forward to 24-25 season. Philippe: Willock is close to a return, as is Barnes, so the left side will have a whole new look with Gordon switching to the right. Like Joelinton, Willock is great at those powerful surging runs with the ball. Barnes looked impressive before he got injured, so I cannot wait to have him back. Geoff: In my view, Newcastle are being unfairly treated regarding not being able to buy players until they sell some. This rule is fair enough for established clubs who have big squads, but Newcastle are newly in funds and don’t have a big squad. If they have to sell top players before buying some, they can never increase the squad. Ride the storm. Andrew: I want us to be calm and patient. Over the next two months, six or seven players will return and the games are more spaced out. When the injuries are a distant memory, our squad is able to handle the battle. The pundits want us to panic, but if we don’t buy anyone new, we won’t need to sell any key players. Bradley: I think Newcastle need to enter the market now. With rumours circulating that we plan on re-investing the potential incoming funds for Trippier and/or Almiron on Everton's Amadou Onana, it seems like the cogs are starting to turn behind the scenes, which is encouraging. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/9234/live/564dc270-bace-11ee-ace0-c35c1b4f6d82.jpg

I think you win these types of games in the mind. "The motivation had to be there, the resilience had to be there, and both were. The second half was better in terms of technical delivery. We are pleased to win and keep a clean sheet, and score two good goals." On the slow start: "We knew it was going to be difficult tonight. You come to this ground, it is a Premier League [level] game. We've got our injury troubles and are not at our fluent best. "In these sorts of games that is when you have to try and dig out a result, and try and get yourself into the next round. That is where I have to praise the players - we weren't at our best in the first half but we came in at the break 1-0 which was a good scoreline for us." On being clinical for the goals: "Sean's finish is a great shot with his left foot, and Dan, well I don't think he could have missed that. He has scored some important goals for us, none more so than last year in our cup run to the Carabao Cup final. That second goal was all important for us." On the possibility of reaching Wembley: "It would be incredible to do it in the FA Cup. The Carabao Cup whetted the appetite for us, it was an incredible day, the scenes beforehand, the support we had. We were so disappointed not to deliver the result. Hopefully we can go a long way in this competition this year." And here is a bit more from Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, this time speaking to BBC Sport: "It was an excellent result, if not our finest performance. "We had to be really resilient, and scored at an important moment before half-time. That settled us down, we were much better in that period with a counter attack threat and much improved I thought. "Sean [Longstaff] is capable off both feet, he is a great ball striker and showed with that finish. Dan’s goal was a massive moment in the match, we are a threat from set plays with the height we have." On whether he feels his team have benefitted from the winter break: "Going into the game I thought we would but sometimes in cup games that does not happen. You have to be resilient and find a way through. That was a morale boosting win for us after the City game and hopefully that gives us confidence going into the Aston Villa match." And on if he is confident on keeping hold of his best players: "I am not sure confident is the word, we hope to, from my side lets wait and see, not much has happened around European football but fingers crossed it is uneventful for us."

Kieran Trippier '100% committed' to Newcastle United with Bayern Munich move 'over'..By Matthew Raisbeck, BBC Newcastle.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/17154/production/_132484549_gettyimages-1965754618.jpg Kieran Trippier has made 82 appearances for NewcastleKieran Trippier says he is "100% committed" to Newcastle United and that a move to Bayern Munich is "over". Newcastle rejected a £12.8m offer from German champions Bayern for the right-back on Tuesday. The England defender, 33, joined the Magpies from Spanish club Atletico Madrid for £12m in January 2022. "There's no place I'd rather be," he told BBC Radio Newcastle after his side reached the FA Cup fifth round. "There's been a lot of speculation about me recently but, as always, I'm committed here. 100% committed, as I have been since I first signed." Trippier was Newcastle's first signing following their Saudi Arabian-backed takeover, and the first under manager Eddie Howe. He has regularly captained Howe's side and helped the club secure a return to the Champions League for the first time in 20 years with a top-four Premier League finish last season. On the interest from Bayern, Trippier said: "It's over. As I've said before, I'm committed. I've had a nice break with my family and I'm not worrying about anything. I'm committed to the club - they've done a lot for me and I want to give back. "I've been quiet but not thrown my toys out of the pram or anything. I'm happy here, like I've always said, and want to give everything for the club." The 2-0 win at Fulham on Saturday took Newcastle through to the last 16 of this season's FA Cup. However, they are 10th in the Premier League, 14 points adrift of the top four, and were knocked out of Europe after finishing bottom of their Champions League group. "I'm old enough now and have been around the block," said Trippier. "At my age, I can only take it [Bayern's interest] as a compliment. I'm here now and want to give everything for Newcastle. "Unsettling? No, because I'm a professional. I'm experienced and try to block all the noise out."
