Report By Phil McNulty..Chief football writer at St. James' Park.Newcastle United's Champions League campaign ended in heartbreak on a night of emotion and drama on Tyneside, as AC Milan came from behind to win at St James' Park and send them out of Europe. The Toon Army were dreaming of a place in the knockout stages when they took the lead through Joelinton's 33rd-minute thunderbolt while Borussia Dortmund led against Paris St-Germain in Germany. It was an outcome that would have sent Newcastle through on head-to-head results against PSG - but the mood shifted in a matter of minutes just before the hour. Teenager Warren Zaire-Emery equalised for the French champions in Germany, then former Chelsea forward Christian Pulisic levelled for Milan. As both sides pushed for a winner in an open game, Milan keeper Mike Maignan did brilliantly to turn Bruno Guimaraes' shot on to the woodwork before Rafael Leao raced clear for the Italians, only to shoot against the foot of the post. Newcastle's fate was sealed six minutes from time when Milan struck ruthlessly on the counter-attack, substitute Samuel Chukwueze curling a superb finish high past Martin Dubravka. It left manager Eddie Howe and his players devastated following a return to the Champions League which was fiercely fought, but has ended with them bottom of Group F and without even the consolation of a place in the Europa League. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1579C/production/_132046978_gettyimages-1853049921.jpgEddie Howe congratulates Joelinton after his first Champions League goal for Newcastle gave them the leadHowe now has the task of lifting a leg-weary squad short on numbers because of injuries, into a position where they can sample this challenge next season - and show they have learned from it - by finishing in the Premier League's top four. There was no consolation in the manner of Newcastle's demise. Now Howe faces a huge challenge to lift their spirits. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/B652/production/_132047664_gettyimages-1853209564.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/12/14/21d1fa9f-acb9-4dbb-a62d-20540180164c.png

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe to turn Champions League 'pain to motivation'..

ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/166E2/production/_132047819_gettyimages-1845881728.jpg Newcastle boss Eddie Howe clapping the fans...Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said the "pain you feel now is motivation for tomorrow" after their Champions League exit following a 2-1 loss to AC Milan. The Magpies were on course to go through between Joelinton's 33rd-minute opener and Christian Pulisic's 59th-minute equaliser at St James' Park. Samuel Chukwueze's winner six minutes from time denied Newcastle the consolation of a Europa League spot. "I'm desperately disappointed. It's tough to take," said Howe. Newcastle qualified for the Champions League for the first time since 2002-03 by finishing fourth in the Premier League last season. They have suffered multiple injury problems this season and could only name seven subs - to Milan's 11. "We've learned a lot," said Howe. "We went into this season knowing the power of the squad and how important that would be, but unfortunately we lost that power and ultimately we went into Champions League games with very few options." Borussia Dortmund went through as group winners with Paris St-Germain finishing second. Had Newcastle held on for a point they would have gone into the Europa League knockout round play-off in February. BBC Radio 5 Live pundit Pat Nevin thinks those injuries meant European elimination was a blessing in disguise. "Before this campaign Eddie Howe hadn't managed at Champions League level," the former Scotland winger said. "So you don't just expect to walk in and cruise it. But I do feel sorry for them that they did not have the opportunity to go at this group with the full strength of their squad. "It won't feel like it for fans right now, but dropping out of Europe altogether is the best outcome for Newcastle United. They haven't got the depth of squad, and they would not get top four." Howe added: "I feel for the players. I've seen what they have given and how committed they have been. I can't fault them at all. "It is painful for me and for them because I know how professional they are and how they want to achieve success. "Any time you don't achieve what you want and have a setback and disappointment you have to use it as fuel. That has always been my way. "The pain you feel now is motivation for tomorrow and now we have to focus on the Premier League. "For me there is nothing but positive thoughts about the team and what they are giving, but now we have to make sure we are consistent in the Premier League."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/c47c/live/8b54f4d0-8e2c-11ee-833d-0f8d294ddc97.jpgStevie: I think 5 points is an embarrassment for Newcastle with the squad & resources they've got. Scottish football is endlessly snivelled at in England and Celtic got 4 points out of just as hard a group. Atletico are better than PSG, Dortmund. Jordan, Bath: Newcastle's exit was obvious and predictable. They bully teams in the premier league and get away with all sorts that they shouldn't. Those same players didn't take those risks in Europe. JB: Gutted for NUFC. But some perspective. Two years ago we were in a relegation scrap. Last season was amazing. Yes we lacked nous in the ECL but that's just inexperience. Glad I'm some ways we missed out on the Europa League as we don't need more games. Ian, Northumberland: You won’t find many Newcastle fans who were actually at the game last night, including me, being critical of Eddie Howe. We were so close and went out fighting by the finest of margins: If Almiron had used his right foot to bury his goaline chance, if Bruno’s shot had not somehow been tipped up on to the bar by their keeper at 1-1 and that disgraceful penalty decision at PSG ended up costing us a place in the Europa League and AC Milan a spot in the next round of the Champions’ League. When PSG would have then finished bottom of the group. All ifs and buts, of course, as is the way with football. But be in no doubt that Eddie has the emphatic support of both the fans and the owners. He is doing an amazing job in what must be viewed as a long term project. Steve, Edgworth: Ridiculous the different views being taken on NUFC and MUFC exiting Europe. Net spend since 2021 almost identical for both clubs. NUFC have stable ownership. MUFC do not. Yet it was a "heroic" effort by NUFC with 7 injured squad members and an "embarrassment" for MUFC despite almost double the number of player absentees. It really is pantomime season. Tom, London: It’s only a little over 2 years ago that Newcastle were winless after 11 games and 19th in the league. To go from that to being 20 minutes away from getting out of the Champions League ‘group of death’ is still a remarkable rise and achievement no matter how disappointing it seems right now! Rob, Brighton: The fact that some Newcastle fans are glad they didn’t qualify for the Europa League play-off is ridiculous. Imagine this mindset by the same set of fans a couple of years ago. It’s a privilege to play in these competitions, the chance to win a trophy and the extra experience can only be a good thing if they want European football to become a regularity with a better chance of progression. Conditions are rarely perfect for teams e.g. injuries, but the idea that league form will improve because of no European football is just a theory. If they qualify for Europa League or Conference League at the end of the season, is it better to just be out of those competitions too? Martin: The key for Newcastle is not to do anything silly and for a football naive board to think it needs to sack Howe and get Mourinho in. Howe is building something and doing an outstanding job. I hope the board understands what it doesn't understand and lets Howe shape the football side of this club. Rob: The difference between MUFC and NUFC is that Newcastle aren't the self-proclaimed "biggest club in the world", Newcastle's manager doesn't constantly talk about how they should win every game, Newcastle got drawn in a group of death, Newcastle haven't been in the Champions League for 20 years, and in every game Newcastle played well, put a shift in, and but for obvious fatigue and an awful penalty decision might well have gone through. The only pantomime here is at Old Trafford.

SATURDAY 16th DECEMBER 2023 - PREMIER LEAGUE
Newcastle United 3 (Miley 57, Almiron 64, Burn 82) Fulham 0
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/44C7/production/_132070671_miley_pa.png Aged 17 years and 229 days, Lewis Miley is the youngest player to score in the Premier League since Federico Macheda for Manchester United in April 2009 (17 years, 226 days)Seventeen-year-old Lewis Miley became Newcastle's youngest Premier League goalscorer as the Magpies bounced back from Champions League elimination with a win over 10-man Fulham. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/1524F/production/_132070668_miley.pngFulham had striker Raul Jimenez sent off after 22 minutes following a dangerous, jumping challenge into Sean Longstaff, which caught the Newcastle man in the face. On-pitch referee Sam Barrott originally showed Jimenez a yellow card before video assistant referee Michael Salisbury told Barrott to review the Mexican's challenge, which was then upgraded to a red card. Anthony Gordon hit the crossbar for the hosts in the first half, before substitute Miley, who joined the club's academy at the age of seven, fired a low shot past Bernd Leno early in the second half. Miguel Almiron added a second goal shortly afterwards when the ball broke to him a few yards out after Callum Wilson thought he had been fouled by Antonee Robinson. Dan Burn grabbed a third late on, bundling the ball over the line after his header had been parried by Leno. The result ended Newcastle's run of three successive defeats. It came three days after the 2-1 home loss to AC Milan not only led to elimination from the Champions League, but also saw them finish bottom of their group to end their involvement in European competition this season. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/6475/production/_132071752_red_card_reuters.pngRaul Jimenez had came into this game in good form with three goals in two matches but was sent off in the 22nd minute against Newcastle
Fulham boss Marco Silva said referee Sam Barrott "didn't have the experience to handle the pressure" in the Cottagers' 3-0 loss to Newcastle. Barrott sent off Fulham striker Raul Jimenez after 22 minutes of Saturday's Premier League game at St James' Park. But Silva was unhappy no action was taken against Jamaal Lascelles when he caught the Mexican two minutes earlier. "It was a really strange performance from the referee from the first minute to the last minute," said Silva. "Lascelles cleared elbowed Raul and not even a foul. I'm not saying red card, but a clear foul. You need referees with experience and to be able to handle the pressure." Asked if the referee was not experienced enough, Silva said: "Clearly, no doubt."

Here are some of the top comments:
Newcastle fans
Wilfry: Absolute rubbish. It looked like they had already clocked off for Christmas. They couldn’t pass the ball correctly and barely tested the goalkeeper. Eddie’s team is becoming too predictable. Wake up team - losing to a third from bottom team is totally unacceptable! Marianne: Another away performance where we were lacking in several areas and ended up second best. We can't complain about injuries. We had a good team out there today who lost against relegation contenders. We need reinforcements in January. Barratone: Very poor performance from Newcastle United. I watched it on TV and was surprised with how easily Luton overpowered Newcastle most of the time. Luton played well, but that is no excuse! It is Howe's job to get them focused and put together 90 minutes of football. They should be hanging their heads after that effort. Karen: I've said this before, as much as I think Eddie Howe is a great coach, I don't believe he is a manager or a leader. I do believe he's had a hard hand to play, but he persistently uses the same flat language when we lose. We are a football team, football teams have to play home and away. I think St. James' is his safety net and where he feels safe.

Chris Wood scored a hat-trick on his return to St James' Park as Nottingham Forest ended a seven-game winless run with a stunning Premier League victory at Newcastle. The result moves Forest up to 16th in the table and five points clear of the bottom three prior to Tuesday's other fixtures. Alexander Isak had seemingly put Eddie Howe's side in control when he stroked home a penalty midway through the first half after going down under a challenge from Ola Aina. But Newcastle only sporadically threatened in attack and always looked vulnerable to a rejigged Forest side set up to counter-attack at pace. Morgan Gibbs-White dragged an early effort wide for the visitors, while Anthony Elanga missed two excellent opportunities before combining with the former England Under-21 midfielder to allow Wood to tap in a deserved equaliser against his old employers before the break. Wood, who was Howe's second signing on Tyneside, added to his tally shortly after the interval, racing on to Elanga's pass and shimmying past home defender Dan Burn to lift the ball over goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. He capped a fine display with another composed finish after Murillo's through ball sent him clear of an absent Newcastle defence. Elanga and Gibbs-White both had chances to inflict further damage on the hosts, who remain seventh in the table after their fourth defeat in five Premier League games. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, speaking to Amazon Prime: "It was a difficult afternoon. We didn't deal with the transitions very well. In that first half we could have made it 2-0 but we were made to pay for it." On drop off: "I don't think there's one reason. I think it's a whole combination of things as to why we've not been at our best." On performance: "I don't think we were far away today. We need to train properly for perhaps the first time in months." On added pressure: "A team not playing at their best, you have to self-reflect. We don't have more pressure than usual." Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to MOTD: "Our first half performance was pretty good. Second half was difficult, we didn't play particularly well. "We were probably close to making it 2-0 then we get caught and they score. "Newcastle were always in the game. They had pace and physicality. We pride ourselves in defending those situations better and for whatever reason that wasn't there today. "I am already analysing what happened today and as always we look to improve. Hopefully we get some training time now." Newcastle captain Kieran Trippier, speaking to Amazon Prime: "We were in control in the first half, but it was the transitions that we'd spoken about. They have some very quick players and that's where they hurt us." Conceded on stroke of half-time: "We were always in control. They have some very good players on the transition. The most important thing is we regroup and stick together. We have to start the second half of the season strong." On slipping standards: "We have been playing two games a week, week after week and some players aren't used to that. My standards have dropped. I'm old enough to speak about myself and my standards have been nowhere near. I've faced enough set backs in my career to know I can bounce back." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/12/26/722461ba-a21f-444b-aba7-ec42d85aaf17.pngichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/12/26/28a30167-9105-4105-b5c0-c1aa7f2b4a3c.png

Here are some of your comments:
Newcastle fans
Richy: We are so lopsided when Dan Burn plays at full back, and he’s been very average all season. He looked miles off it again in this game. That aside we were rotten all over the pitch [except Lewis Miley] and never looked like scoring. We’ve spent so long believing we are tired that we can't even turn up for games now. That was basically a full strength line-up too. Lee: Absolutely shocking display. The defence seemed non-existent when the ball came anywhere near the Newcastle side. Something needs to change instead of constantly pushing the ball wide for Almiron or Gordon every time they go on the attack. The gaps from the middle of the park to the back four were as if we'd forgotten to put any midfield on. Wallsy: The staff are not managing this run of injuries at all. We are still trying to play the same way with players not up to it and it’s having a negative effect on our better players. Morale appears low and performances of late are showing this. We took the lead and then got done by being far too open on several occasions. Think, Eddie. Jack: Clueless and lacking any determination. One of the poorest displays for some time. Forest were far superior in attack and defence and left us looking very poor. New blood needed in January transfer market. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/56/Newcastle_United_Logo.svg/200px-Newcastle_United_Logo.svg.png

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe says there have been no 'assurances' of funds for January signings..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/2446/production/_132168290_gettyimages-1884875513.jpgNewcastle manager Eddie Howe says he is unlikely to be able to solve his side's poor form and injury woes in the January transfer window. Howe explained he has been given no "assurances" he will have funds to spend in the new year. The Magpies' slump has seen them lose six of their past seven games in all competitions and exit both the Champions League and the Carabao Cup. "January is always a difficult month," said Howe. "We haven't had those assurances [about funds]. I apologise if I sound like I'm saying the same things, but it is a very difficult month to bring in quality players. "Financial Fair Play continues to play a part in our decision-making, so let's wait and see." Howe's squad has been depleted by injuries, with no update on Harvey Barnes' foot injury or Joe Willock's Achilles, but he said they are both "working behind the scenes". Jacob Murphy and Elliot Anderson are also sidelined, while £55m summer signing Sandro Tonali has been banned from football for 10 months for breaching betting rules. But Howe added that Jamaal Lascelles' injury is not too serious. Newcastle have lost their two most recent encounters, to Luton Town and Nottingham Forest, and travel to Anfield to face Premier League leaders Liverpool in a tough New Year's Day encounter. Howe added that Jurgen Klopp's side are "intense and unrelenting" and that his team will need to be "near perfect" in order to win. Newcastle currently sit ninth in the table, having finished fourth last season, and Howe acknowledged the criticism he has recently received after the disappointing results. "I'm always in the spotlight and criticism is part of this job. It goes hand in hand with it," he said. "It just goes with the territory. I've learned to accept and understand that and - no disrespect - but to blank it out and make sure I help the players. That hasn't changed for me."

MONDAY 1st JANUARY 2024 - PREMIER LEAGUE Liverpool 4 (Salah 49, 86 pen, Jones 74, Gakpo 78) Newcastle United 2 (Isak 54, Botman 81) ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/1/0c1f4e26-0e47-4f8f-abce-38dec1b26b60.jpgMohamed Salah scored twice as Liverpool eventually broke down resilient Newcastle United to open up a three-point lead at the top of the Premier League. In a relentless and frantic game, fuelled by wicked rain and wind on Merseyside, Liverpool took swing after swing at Newcastle but looked in danger of being held to a third consecutive Anfield draw after a goalless first half. But Salah, who will now depart to join Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations and who had a first-half penalty saved, tapped home a cross for his side's first then converted a second spot-kick in the closing stages. His first strike was his 150th Premier League goal for the Reds, but it was cancelled out five minutes by Alexander Isak, who got in behind the hosts' defence and curled home. Liverpool pressed to go in front again and eventually Curtis Jones gave them the lead again before a scuffed Cody Gapko effort from a brilliant Salah pass gave them breathing space. But back came Newcastle when Sven Botman headed home a corner to make it 3-2 before Salah sent Martin Dubravka - who was heroic throughout - the wrong way to secure the points. Liverpool had won their opening seven Premier League games at Anfield this season but had been been held to draws by Manchester United and Arsenal in their previous two home games. They now lead Aston Villa by three points and have a five-point lead over Manchester City, who have a game in hand, and Arsenal. Newcastle, who were missing nine first-team players, remain ninth. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/1/64664801-0fd2-4e9e-8b9a-bcdccfa59454.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/12/26/123644a6-78b4-40d8-a3b8-aaf48f95ff87.jpgNewcastle boss Eddie Howe to Sky Sports: "A lot happened. Action packed game. We're disapointed with the way we defended. "I didn't think the second one was a penalty. And I did think Sean Longstaff's one before that was. "It shouldn't be given. Martin has pulled his hand away. He's had two steps before going down. For me it's not a penalty. Even the first one the contact was so minimal. We feel hard done by. "You have to have the mindset that you create your luck. Feeling sorry for yourself never has any positive outcome. "The players gave everything. I back the quality of the group. In time we'll get the results we need. On Trippier and Wilson injuries: "Unclear. Fingers crossed they won't be long." Newcastle boss Eddie Howe to BBC Sport: "I thought Liverpool played very well. It was a really tough game for us. "I'm still confused over the penalties we conceded. The second one especially didn't look like a penalty. We had one before that [not given], that was probably the turning point. "We're battling to get our best levels back. The effort and determination was there. As long as we continue to see that we'll be fine. "The most important thing is we're fighting. We're missing a lot of players, we've had a lot of tough fixtures in a congested December."

Here are some of the top comments:
Newcastle fansAndrew: Firstly, let’s praise Dubravka who was exceptional! He had a fantastic performance and showed he is fighting for the badge. Sadly, in the first half, our midfield wasn’t able to find its way through the Liverpool players. Miley might need a bit longer before he’s at that standard, as our midfield improved after the sub (he’s still great though!). Ben: It says it all when Dubravka was our best player despite conceding four goals. There remain major issues - Longstaff lacks creativity, Burn is a liability and hinders the attacking capability of Gordon, who also looks leggy recently. We look tired and in desperate need of reinforcements to freshen the squad and to give us options from the bench. Gordon: The players gave 110% but were too frantic. We didn’t control midfield at anytime during the game and didn’t protect our back four. Bruno’s lack of pace and composure at this level was evident and without Trippier and Lascelles there was no leadership on the pitch. A cool finish by Isak was a rare moment of quality on a difficult night.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/4942/production/_132145781_gossip_phillips_getty2.jpgJuventus have pulled out of the race to sign Manchester City and England midfielder Kalvin Phillips because of the loan fee and the breakdown of the 28-year-old's salary. The end of Juve's interest in Phillips could boost Newcastle's chances of signing the midfielder. Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff could be on his way out of the club if the right offer comes along for the 26-year-old Englishman.
