Newcastle United: Sven Botman out for up to nine months with ACL injury..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/E46D/production/_132977485_botman.jpg Sven Botman has played 16 times for Newcastle since returning from a previous knee injury in DecemberNewcastle United defender Sven Botman is expected to be out for "six to nine months" after a scan revealed he needs surgery on a knee injury. The Dutchman injured his anterior cruciate ligament in Saturday's FA Cup defeat at Manchester City and had to be substituted late on. The 24-year-old centre-back will have surgery next week. "Everyone at Newcastle United wishes Sven a full and speedy recovery," the club said. Botman initially sustained a knee injury in September and missed 17 games - including the final five of the Magpies' Champions League group games - before returning in December. Newcastle said it was decided not to send Botman for surgery at that stage and he regained full fitness through a rehabilitation programme. Botman has started the majority of Newcastle's matches since his return, but had to be brought off in the 83rd minute of the 2-0 loss to Manchester City in their quarter-final tie at the weekend. Newcastle added: "Following further assessment, a scan has confirmed that he sustained an injury to his ACL during Saturday's match and he is expected to return to action within six-to-nine months." It is the latest in a series of long-term injury blows for Magpies manager Eddie Howe this season. England goalkeeper Nick Pope has been out since December with a shoulder injury, while Brazil midfielder Joelinton and Three Lions striker Callum Wilson have also been missing for extended periods. Botman, who has previously been called up by the Netherlands but not yet made his international debut, will miss out on the chance of playing in the Euro 2024 finals.

Playing for Scotland over England was 'never a thought' - Gordon..by Alex Howell, BBC Sport. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/3/21/eb2b96d2-06c3-442d-b725-5a22ffeaa430.jpgNewcastle forward Anthony Gordon says playing for Scotland was "never a thought" after receiving his first call-up to the senior England squad. The in-form 23-year-old has 10 goals and seven assists in all competitions for Newcastle this season. Scotland had been interested in securing his services as he qualified to play via his grandparents. Reports suggested they would move for Gordon when he missed out on the last England squad. Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate said Gordon was "very close" to being selected at that time. "It was never a thought for me - that's no disrespect to Scotland at all." said Gordon. "I've been tunnel vision on playing for England since I was five, six-years-old and nothing could ever shake that off. I would never forgive myself if i didn't get to this point. "It's been a dream I've had since I was so young and nothing else has ever entered my mind."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/e5a7/live/aa923800-e785-11ee-8bf3-195418ba9285.jpgWe asked for your thoughts on the injury to Sven Botman after it was confirmed the defender would be sidelined for six to nine months.
Here are some of your responses:
Paul: This is terrible but he's not the only one that has played while not ready, not fully recovered, not fully fit or still suffering from muscle fatigue. These are some of the reasons, I believe, why so many injuries have happened. Stop taking these risks. Physios - don't crumble under pressure from management! The White Feather: An average, expensive player with a horrendous injury record. Waste of money in my opinion. David: I agree with John Anderson. Botman was a colossus last season but since December he has not been the player he was. It was obvious he'd returned too early as he'd lost his pace and confidence on the ball. I wish him all the best for the future as he is a quality player. Alan: There has to be a common reason for so many injuries. Is it the training? Or the type of playing style? The amount of injuries this season have been ridiculous. Ed: Lack of recruitment resulting in a paper-thin squad. So the continuous raining blows of injury-upon-injury, betting scandal, etc, have crippled our squad. Those who have managed to stay fit must be totally shattered! ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/c8c7/live/68f756d0-e764-11ee-9cb9-9ddfe3c0d137.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/dddb/live/b61e9ff0-eeac-11ee-848d-8502df76512f.jpg David Moyes spoke to BBC Match of the Day after West Ham's loss to Newcastle: "We did a lot of good things but didn't defend well enough. We scored some good goals and we were a threat but in the end we conceded one more goal than they did. "We scored a minute into the second half but I don't think you can say we were in control at 3-1. As you know, Newcastle shooting down the way it is always tough. It's small margins. "I think a couple of decisions the referee made on penalty kicks. I think the second one, [Anthony] Gordon restricts Kalvin Phillips from kicking the ball. I actually think it's the wrong decision. We had so many things that didn't go in our favour today but there were a lot of good things the players did." On bouncing back: "It's not easy. We have lost a game when we should have won a game. In the Premier League. This is a tough place to come and for a long period we looked as though we were going to be the side who finished on top. We didn't see the job through and weren't tough enough. We had to be harder to play against and we didn't do that. "We all learn. Football always gives you another chance to try and win and hopefully we will try and do that in the next game." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/3/30/d7023213-5d93-4a2c-8a34-9a50ab2225db.jpgEddie Howe spoke to BBC Match of the Day after Newcastle's victory over West Ham: "It tells us we have some unbelievable professionals in there and we still have a spirit that we will never give up. It is a game we will never forget, it was a pleasure to be a part of it and I can't praise the players enough." On injuries: "It's been the story of our season. Unfortunately we were getting hit left right and centre today. We were 1-0 up and then Jamaal [Lascelles] goes off. Miggy [Almiron] goes off, Anthony [Gordon] is sent off, Tino [Livramento] goes off. It is a catalogue one after another but the players we brought on made a positive impact and that's the beauty of our squad." On Harvey Barnes: "He is an incredible player. We have missed him this season and he would have given us quality wherever he played. He is a goalscorer and they are so valuable and his two finishes today were of the highest quality. Of course, the last one was memorable and will always be remembered and what a finish it was. That's the quality he has."

Jamaal Lascelles: Newcastle captain out for six to nine months with ACL injury..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/5361/production/_133054312_gettyimages-2124972759.jpg Jamaal Lascelles has made more than 200 Premier League appearances for Newcastle since joining from Nottingham Forest in 2014Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles is expected to be out for "six to nine months" after scans revealed he needs surgery on a knee injury. Lascelles ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Saturday's win over West Ham. The 30-year-old will have surgery next week. Fellow centre-back Sven Botman suffered a similar injury against Manchester City earlier this month and has also been ruled out for up to nine months. Lascelles was forced off after 17 minutes of Saturday's 4-3 win at St James' Park. In a statement, the club said: "After seeing a specialist consultant, he is expected to undergo surgery next week and will be out for six to nine months. "Everyone at Newcastle United extends their best wishes to Jamaal for a full and speedy recovery." Tino Livramento, Emil Krafth and Miguel Almiron also limped off on Saturday as Newcastle's season continues to be blighted by injury. England goalkeeper Nick Pope has been out since December with a shoulder injury. Brazil midfielder Joelinton and Three Lions striker Callum Wilson have also been missing for extended periods. Lewis Miley and Kieran Trippier are also sidelined, while Anthony Gordon will serve a one-match ban after being sent off for two yellow cards late on against the Hammers.

Here are some of your responses:
Newcastle fans
Sam: What a game! Harvey Barnes has come on from the bench and has proved exactly why he should be playing. Tremendous footballer. This was a game of many highs and lows and lots of changes to the team. The subs of Barnes, Anderson and especially Hall were terrific. Let's hope we can now push on and try to win as many of our last nine games as we can. Godwyne: When Newcastle, in 2011, produced a stunning comeback from 4-0 down to earn a draw against Arsenal, I thought that was right up there. But today, to comeback from being 3-1 down against West Ham, and with multiple injuries, that’s been one of the best performances by NUFC. Andrew: Phenomenal barely covers it! After the Livramento injury, at 3-1 down, it was like watching the Newcastle of last season! The intensity and passion we saw, was driven by the 12th man (the crowd). Let’s see this in the remaining matches, and maybe we can finish on an incredible high! upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/56/Newcastle_United_Logo.svg/200px-Newcastle_United_Logo.svg.png

ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1A27/production/_133059660_whatsubject.jpgNewcastle have reignited their interest in Arsenal and England's Aaron Ramsdale, 25, as they target a younger goalkeeper. Newcastle are braced for bids from Arsenal and Tottenham, potentially worth £100m, for Sweden striker Alexander Isak, 24, if the Magpies need to raise funds to allow them to refresh their squad within financial fair play rules. Tottenham and Newcastle have been told they will have to pay more than £50m if they want to sign former England Under-21 midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, 24, from Nottingham Forest. Arsenal and Newcastle had scouts watching Porto's Brazilian striker Evanilson, 24, at the weekend and both have watched his club team-mate and Argentina midfielder Alan Varela, 22, this season.

French giants Paris St-Germain lead the chase, with Manchester United and Arsenal also keen. Tottenham have also joined Arsenal in the race to sign Sweden striker Alexander Isak, 24, should Newcastle be forced to sell key players this summer. But Isak has reaffirmed his commitment to Newcastle amid interest from his club's Premier League rivals. Newcastle will prioritise the signing of two central defenders when the transfer window opens following the loss of Dutchman Sven Botman, 24, and Englishman Jamaal Lascelles, 30, to long-term injuries. Middlesbrough's Senegalese goalkeeper Seny Dieng, 29, is being watched by Premier League clubs including Newcastle and Crystal Palace after an impressive season in the Championship. Newcastle are interested in Real Madrid's Spanish midfielder Dani Ceballos, 27.

Here are some of your responses:
Newcastle fans
Norman: Newcastle allowed themselves to be outmuscled and outfought. Too many substitutions disrupted their flow and, as the second half unfolded, it seemed almost inevitable that Everton would score. All of the Magpies' injuries are now catching up with them. Phil: Newcastle live dangerously again and the lack of ability to kill off games reflects in our league position this season. It was utterly ridiculous to give a sloppy penalty away. It's been a very frustrating season watching the Toon. I worry now that we will fail in our attempt to get one of the European slots. Lisa: If I'm a team-mate of Dummet, I'm furious. What a needless and reckless way to throw away two points. So blatant. I don't want to see him in a Newcastle shirt again. Fair play Everton for having a go. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/56/Newcastle_United_Logo.svg/200px-Newcastle_United_Logo.svg.png

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/ab59/live/470208c0-f346-11ee-a92d-4dea4f4b5a40.jpgManager Eddie Howe says Newcastle United's progress as a club will not hinge on qualifying for the Champions League this season. In a season littered with injuries, hopes of securing a second successive season in the competition are all but mathematically over. Their likely absence has led to reports of key names being linked with other clubs but Howe feels there is enough ambition from the club and its owners to keep star players happy. Asked if European qualification would help that process, he said: "It will help, but I don't think it will be the defining factor. That's in the players' hands and the club's hands. Europe would certainly help. "A lot will depend on our ambitions and where the club is going to go in the foreseeable future. I don't think one season necessarily dictates that - it's the general feeling of where the club is going to go. "We, as a football club, need to continue to push forward. You set your ambitions not just in terms of talking, but in actions, so we need to show to them that we are a club moving forward." Asked about possible interest in the likes of striker Alexander Isak and midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, Howe said he does not expect to spend his summer fending off bids. "In some senses, that's what you want because it means your players are playing at a level that everyone appreciates and I want my players - all of them - to be playing above what they think they're capable of being," said Howe. "So no, I don't think fear is the right word. I want Alex to keep scoring goals and I want him to keep being in the headlines. I'm sure he wants the same thing. We want to keep him long term. "Players like Bruno are not around every corner. They are very rare. Bruno should be appreciated for everything he brings. My intention would be to keep Bruno at the club for as long as we possibly can. "I can never make guarantees, though. That would be absolutely foolish of me. We have been in football long enough to know you don't know what is going to happen tomorrow."

"I've actually got a few Bobby Robson stories," he said. "He actually thought my name was a nom de plume - a made-up name - when he first saw it in The Chronicle. "You can understand why, I guess. "In my first year or two, one of my colleagues had the story that one of Bobby's coaches, Mick Wadsworth, was going to go to Southampton. "The sports editor at the time asked me if I could canvas some fan opinion on what this will mean and Mick had been involved in one or two of the less successful signings of the first year or two. Fan opinion wasn't that favourable. "I write this piece and next thing I know I get a call from the club saying, 'Bobby wants to see you'. Before that meeting could take place, Bobby convened a press conference at St James' Park on my day off so my colleague went there. "He was waving a copy of The Chronicle around and saying Mick Wadsworth was going to stay until he read my piece about the fan opinion. Bobby said: 'I spoke to him, persuaded him to stay but then I read The Chronicle.' "There's so many little stories like that about Bobby."

Saturday 6th April 2024 - Premier League

Report By Charlotte Coates, BBC Sport.Bruno Guimaraes scored his fourth goal of the season as Newcastle beat Fulham at Craven Cottage. The Brazilian struck the winner inside the last 10 minutes after good work from substitute Harvey Barnes, shortly after Fabian Schar had an effort ruled out for a foul in the build-up. Newcastle are now one point adrift of sixth-placed Manchester United and firmly in the tussle for a place in Europe next season. Willian, Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Muniz missed great chances for Marco Silva's home side as Fulham stayed in 13th spot. Fulham started the game brightly after a poor loss to Nottingham Forest during the week, but missed chances allowed Eddie Howe's visitors to grow into the game. Anthony Gordon, who returned to the Newcastle starting line-up after suspension, was a constant threat and came close to breaking the deadlock with a 20-yard drive that whistled inches wide. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/c323/live/6f1c5ce0-f443-11ee-b0f9-a3e58c501f1d.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/a334/live/6e4e6bc0-d5c9-11ee-9f22-256e03ab9e00.jpgNewcastle boss Eddie Howe has been speaking to Premier League Productions after the win: "Really pleased with 60 minutes, I think the first thirty we looked really tired - two games in a week with a very small squad - after that, they gave everything. We really did improve the performance and it was a brilliant win." On the disallowed goal: "Live, I thought it was a goal. Dan [Burn] jumped aggressively but fairly. I wasn't surprised it went to VAR because these things normally do, but then I thought VAR would say it was fine. "Then I thought the referee would go over and review his decision, which he gave as a goal, I thought he would have the strong mindset to have a look, but he didn't. I thought it was a perfectly good goal [which was] ruled out." On Newcastle looking tired: "It was about switching the mindset really. Like I said, in the opening period we looked really lethargic and Fulham controlled things and played really well. "Often the third game in a week is difficult, especially going away from home and not being able to rotate the players you want to. We did well not to concede and had some luck doing it too. "But [after] a few harsh words, the lads were harsh with themselves as well, and second half we saw a completely different team that deserved to win in the end." On chasing the European football spots: "Well that is seven points from nine we have taken since the break. We were aiming for nine, but seven we will take and we move on to another home game. "The players will have the chance to rest a bit. We will count the bodies and get ready for Tottenham." On Bruno Guimaraes: "Firstly, he is very defensively intelligent, very aggressive and physical. His main quality though, of course, is with the ball. His technical ability, which we didn't see early in the game, because we didn't have the ball. Second half, we saw plenty of that and I thought he was instrumental in us coming here and getting the win." On Bruno's future at the club: "No, I wouldn't say that is a conversation we are having. He has got a contract, a long contract, he signed a new deal this season. When a player does that he commits himself to you for a number of years. "Of course, in the modern game, things can change but he looks happy. I see a player happy in the group, on the training pitch, off the pitch as well. So I would hope we can do enough to keep him here."

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has held face-to-face talks with Newcastle co-owner Amanda Staveley in an attempt to reach an agreement on sporting director Dan Ashworth's move to Manchester United. Newcastle bosses have injected £37m into the club in the form of a new share issue, although it is not clear whether the money will contribute towards the summer transfer window. Liverpool, Newcastle United and AC Milan are considering a move for Leeds United's 22-year-old Dutch winger Crysencio Summerville. Everton can expect offers for Belgium midfielder Amadou Onana with former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness saying the club could get up to £70m for the 22-year-old amid interest from Arsenal, Newcastle United and West Ham.

Newcastle United: Joelinton signs new long-term contract..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/57C8/production/_133127422_gettyimages-1801828533.jpg Joelinton joined Newcastle United in 2019Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton has signed a new long-term contract. Joining Newcastle United "was the best decision of my career", Joelinton has said, after the Brazil international agreed a new contract. The Premier League club has said it is a "long-term" contract but has not disclosed the exact length of Joelinton's deal. The 27-year-old, who joined the Magpies from German club Hoffenheim in 2019, told Newcastle's club website: "I feel great. I feel very happy and my family is happy. "A lot of things have happened in my years here. I've learnt a lot and grown a lot, and for me to come here to Newcastle was the best decision of my career. "I love playing for the club. I love the club. I love the fans. We had a lot of discussions and I always wanted to be here. I'm glad to continue and I hope to have success in the years to come." Joelinton has scored 25 goals in his 179 appearances for Newcastle. Manager Eddie Howe said: "This has been a big priority for us off the pitch and I'm absolutely delighted Joelinton has committed his future to the club. "Joey is an exceptional player and person, and the love he has for the club is reciprocated by all of us here. He brings unique qualities to the group and undoubtedly makes us stronger. "I'd like to thank everyone involved behind the scenes for bringing this to a swift and positive conclusion. We are all excited to see Joelinton in a Newcastle shirt for many years to come." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/c116/live/f6f62700-f816-11ee-8e9d-717411f1d2c4.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/e072/live/8ad960f0-f2ad-11ee-a9f7-4d961743aa47.jpgWe asked for your thoughts on Saturday's Premier League game between Fulham and Newcastle United.
Here are some of your responses:
Newcastle fans
Joseph: We rode our luck in the first half and were very open at times in defence, but the lads seemed to grow in confidence and began to take the fight to Fulham in the second period. The result is all that matters in this one though and it keeps us firmly in the hunt for European football, of some sort, next season. Andy: Longstaff and Krafth were dreadful again. They are not good enough and are Championship players at best. In my opinion, they are only in the team because our injury list is as long the M5 motorway. This is an issue that needs looking at. There must be issues with the training or something because we have had over 40 injuries so far. That is horrendous. It was a vital three points though and we are still in it. Richard: Walking away from that match, I feel like football is hard work to watch sometimes. I mean, most of that just wasn't enjoyable! Fulham had a lot of the ball but they managed the same number of clear-cut chances as the Toon. We somehow found the energy from somewhere at the end, and I think it was pure adrenaline! Still, somehow, we won! Vernon: For a team that is still running on a very depleted squad, they are still proving to be a nuisance to the so-called 'Big Six'. European football is still on the cards. Come on the Toon! upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/56/Newcastle_United_Logo.svg/200px-Newcastle_United_Logo.svg.png
