I think when you see how hard he's worked, he's played 70 minutes and a 90 minutes in a week. It's all down to the hard work he's put in." On performance: "It was mixed emotions for me because that team is an elite team. The mixed part is that we haven't seen that for a number of weeks. We looked much like ourselves and we have players coming back." On game plan: "Our game plan was to be aggressive and stop their rhythm. We did that well in the first half. They play a high line and we used that well. We had to adjust our plan when they got the goal but the players saw it out well. When you're coaching a team, you want them to play how you see the game. That has been there but it's been frustrating. Today I saw the team and the identity we're looking for." On away fans: "When the team is not getting the results, it is easy for the supporters to change. They ahve never done that during this run we've been on. Hopefully we've made that worthwhile for them tonight." On Schar goals: "Great to see him back on the scoresheet tonight because he's been a bit quiet. It's a great finish. It was a good defensive performance and it had to be." On momentum: "We know every game is so tough in the Premier League and we will look to use this game to push on now. The only disappointment today is Alex." [Injury to Isak] On Isak injury: "We don't really know. It looks like a slight groin injury. Hopefully we get him back sooner rather than later." On transfer window: "I'd be more than happy for the window to shut with no incomings or outgoings." Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It was a big result for us today. We knew all eyes were on us today. We've been on a disappointing run in the Premier League, especially away from home. We knew this is the hardest place to come in the league due to Villa's form. "I thought we were the dominant team and just hoping a goal dropped for us. The third was a fabulous cushion for us." On Fabian Schar: "He is a goalscorer and a really good technical player. It's great to see him get two massive today." On Alexander Isak: "It looks like a groin injury. We'll get a proper diagnoses but hopefully it's not too bad." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/30/8eb3c0dc-e8ba-4d1f-8088-5793e2bfddaa.jpgNewcastle United goalscorer Fabian Schar, speaking to TNT Sports: "It is a difficult place to come and I am very happy for the team. The three points is what matters. "Today I was in the right position and a little bit lucky too. It was great to get the goals and the win so I am very happy. "We know we have so much quality in our team but we have to ring it on the pitch. This gives us great confidence for the rest of this season. If we play like this, we can really look forward to the rest of this season." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/30/ceec9113-a269-4f1c-85d8-b88dc3145bbd.jpgNewcastle United's Jacob Murphy, speaking to TNT Sports: "There was big talk in the dressing room beforehand about how much of a fortress [Villa Park] was and we had to imposes ourselves on the game. We did that with with two wonderstrikes from Fab [Schar]." On the third goal being awarded as an Alex Moreno own-goal and not to him: "Ouch. 12 weeks out for that! I'm just glad to be in the area and I'm just glad we could get the goal." On the rest of the season: "I think we have been a bit too inconsistent. We are now starting to get players back and once we have a full complement back, we can really kick on. This is the first step now to really kick on this season."

Report By Neil Johnston, BBC Sport.Substitute Harvey Barnes marked his return from a long injury with a goal to rescue a point for Newcastle in an extraordinary eight-goal thriller against Luton. In a breathless encounter, Sean Longstaff swept the hosts into the lead only for defender Gabriel Osho to head an equaliser off the underside of the bar. The Hatters, however, were on level terms for just two minutes as Longstaff restored Newcastle's advantage after Thomas Kaminski parried Anthony Gordon's attempt into his path. But Luton were far from done and equalised a second time before half-time, Ross Barkley firing home from five yards after the ball dropped invitingly at his feet following Martin Dubravka's save to keep out Alfie Doughty. The visitors went ahead for the first time when skipper Carlton Morris scored from a retaken penalty after a review by the video assistant referee (VAR) ruled Dan Burn had fouled the impressive Chiedozie Ogbene. It looked all over when Elijah Adebayo made it 4-2 less than two minutes later, but Kieran Tripper's first goal since August 2022 gave the Magpies hope before Barnes, in his first appearance since 24 September, drilled home to make it 4-4. In one of the all-time great games of the Premier League era, Jacob Murphy missed a great chance to win it for Newcastle when he blazed over in the 85th minute. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/2/3/abaf46fa-85fe-4696-9fa1-ac6a4d6f04eb.pngichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/2/3/47471a95-de79-4eb2-90c7-e6e1e372524a.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/2/3/62b99d8e-41c2-4404-ae99-0219b7ffcf67.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/2/3/ae98b257-bc0b-4a06-801b-198523101777.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/2/3/243dc627-8f91-4aa2-bece-c81e98179cfa.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/2/3/6fcf806f-f342-4902-ade6-98cb9c9e921a.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/2/3/69f0fe5b-d9fe-46b9-b2ce-04067ff5ecfd.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/2/3/7057c3e1-f535-4dde-a271-ad3d4765a1fa.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/2/3/a1d3823c-5f74-4d37-962b-5596c6f1b700.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/2/3/fba5a88a-5f7b-4cc9-b123-71f762837d5d.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/2/3/1e9c1cf3-db87-43d7-af0d-a8661400f165.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/2/3/ddb94212-a207-442a-b959-0e358ead0008.jpg

Anthony Gordon: Newcastle forward sustains injury in Luton draw..(above)
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/B665/production/_132539664_anthonygordon.jpg Anthony Gordon has made 33 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle this seasonNewcastle forward Anthony Gordon could be facing a spell on the sidelines after leaving St James' Park on crutches following the 4-4 draw with Luton. The 22-year-old was replaced by Callum Wilson at half-time on Saturday. "I think he twisted his ankle," said Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, who did not provide a time frame for how long Gordon could be out for. "He is in a protective boot and the physios are doing the right thing."

What Eddie Howe after Newcastle's 4-4 draw with Luton: "It was a strange game really. So much to look back on and reflect on. We are disappointed to have not grown stronger in the game. Credit to Luton on how they got back into the game. And then we had to do that as well." On conceding four goals: "The first one is a set play and another is a penalty. We made some poor decisions defensively. When we went 1-0 up I don't think we handled it well until they equalised. I wanted us to grab control of the game but we didn't. That's the frustrating thing. In that moment we had a lack of confidence and then a real credit to the players for coming back because it is not easy to do. We scored some great goals and could have won it." On Harvey Barnes' goalscoring return: "An incredible finish from Harvey on his left foot. That was a valuable one for us today." On Anthony Gordon's injury: "I think he twisted his ankle. He is in a protective boot and the physios are doing the right thing."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/b159/live/69c93b10-bb99-11ee-896d-39d9bd3cadbb.jpgWe asked you for your thoughts on Saturday's Premier League match between Nottingham Forest and Newcastle.
Here are some of your comments:
Newcastle fans
Stephen: We looked out of sorts tonight with a few players not at their best. Anthony Gordon especially gave the ball away a lot tonight. Bruno Guimaraes was excellent but we really seem to miss Joe Willock in midfield. However, we did enough to get the three points and that's all that counts at the minute. We showed a lot of character again, which is a positive. Victor: Very average. We have too many players with no touch. They graft but it's huff-and-puff stuff. Bruno was class. Gordon and Lewis Miley are exhausted. Dan Burn and Sven Botman are lacking pace. We will be lucky to get into the top seven. It was a battling performance though. Richy: We can all see that Burn is struggling. He is an easy target for the opposition and it's unbalancing the team. He has been great for us and has a role to play but we can’t afford sentiment if we want to progress. It was nice to see us tighten up and cling on to a lead in a tight game - it’s been a while! Richard: Remember when we used to keep clean sheets? I think the character of the team is magnificent and our last two results have shown this, but I’d be even happier if we stopped letting in so many goals. It’s not a back-five issue. The team need to plug the holes! We can’t keep relying on tenacity to get points. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/976/cpsprodpb/00FB/production/_132615200_a5410d2bc44ed40f5bc62b3d1099444609fc081f.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/57ec/live/598c7b80-c8ec-11ee-915c-df4fd89712a1.jpgFormer Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer praised midfielder Bruno Guimaraes' performance against Nottingham Forest on Match of the Day: "He was brilliant. He deserved it [player of the match]. He scored two wonderful goals. His all-round performance, I thought, was magnificent. "Everything good about Newcastle, he was at the heart of it. Whether he was keeping the ball, protecting the ball, adding that little bit of quality with his passing, his movement, his ability to find space that not many others can. "His [first] goal was a well-worked set piece, a great ball in from [Kieran] Trippier, but that is such a difficult technique. To hit it like that, eyes on the ball watching it all the way. To get the direction and power that he did, it was an incredible goal. "For his second goal, he's actually a split second quicker than anyone else's thought process. He knows exactly what Forest want to do but he's not letting them do that. Just watch the way he reacts, he's quick and gets the ball and he's got the ability to whip it into the corner. "That's why the Newcastle fans love him. He's got a great relationship with the fans and rightly so. He's a lovely man and a very, very good footballer."

'There's enough issues for referees without blue cards'..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/2/13/be04b5af-81c5-462a-aef3-cbc2dd58fb36.jpgWe mentioned earlier that Alan Shearer has weighed into the debate about the possible introduction of blue cards in football for temporary sin-bins. The former England and Newcastle United captain told BBC Radio 5 Live that referees already have enough issues to deal with. "There’s enough issues going on trying to work out what a yellow is, what a red is, what is handball, what isn’t handball, proximity, natural, unnatural, all those things," said Shearer, when asked about the plans being considered by IFAB. "I think it works perfectly fine as it is and I don’t see how it would be a benefit to have blue cards. That’s the polite answer."

Newcastle have joined West Ham in the race to sign Genoa's 26-year-old Iceland forward Albert Gudmundsson. Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth is Manchester United's top target to replace John Murtough, who is expected to leave his role as football director once Sir Jim Ratcliffe's deal to buy a 25% stake in the Red Devils is complete. The Magpies are concerned Ashworth has been unsettled by the speculation and are seeking assurances that he is committed to the club long term.

Newcastle United put Dan Ashworth on gardening leave amid Manchester United interest..By Simon Stone, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/4676/production/_132683081_gettyimages-1401579592.jpg Dan Ashworth became Newcastle's sporting director in 2022Newcastle United's sporting director Dan Ashworth has been placed on gardening leave after telling the club he wants to join Manchester United. Manchester United are targeting Ashworth to join their Ineos-inspired overhaul of the club. However, it is not thought talks between the clubs have started yet. Newcastle have Ashworth under contract, which prevents the 52-year-old from working for anyone else into 2025 unless compensation is agreed. Newcastle believe they will be within their rights to ask Manchester United for a fee well in excess of £10m. The Old Trafford outfit, on the other hand, are determined they will not be held to ransom. Ashworth has established a reputation as one of the best sporting directors in the game. However, there have been some suggestions from St James' Park he is at least partly responsible for the £55m signing of Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali from AC Milan in July. Tonali made just 12 appearances for Newcastle before he was banned for 10 months after breaching gambling regulations in Italy, meaning he will be unable to play until August. If Ineos, whose 25% ownership of Manchester United is set to be confirmed this week, do agree a deal for Ashworth then it would be another significant move by them. It is understood Ashworth is keen on a move to Old Trafford, having established a relationship with Ineos head of sport Sir Dave Brailsford during his time in a previous role at the Football Association (FA). Ashworth was credited with England's phenomenal success at youth level in 2017, when they won both the Under-17 and Under-20 World Cups. He then helped to shape Brighton's rise up the Premier League through the appointment of Graham Potter as manager after Chris Hughton was sacked. Ashworth served a period of leave when he left Brighton before joining Newcastle in 2022.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/18559/production/_132737699_gettyimages-2018610741.jpgNewcastle boss Eddie Howe has been speaking to the media before facing Championship side Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup fifth round at Ewood Park on Tuesday.
Here are the key lines from his news conference:Howe said he hopes goalkeeper Martin Dubravka will be available for selection but he does not yet know if he will be. He added that Loris Karius, who played against Arsenal, "did OK" in a "very difficult performance for the team". Both Elliot Anderson and Matt Targett are "close to returning", with Howe stating: "They're getting there. It's been a long road for both of them. Matt's injury was quite clear cut, a bad tear in his hamstring and an operation. Elliot's had a very, very difficult injury because he felt OK but the scan said it was a stress fracture in his back so he had to give it a lot of rest." First-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope is "still very much gym-based" and remains "a number of weeks away" from being available for selection. Howe is happy to have Alexander Isak and Joe Willock back: "I was delighted with Joe's return, I thought he looked really good when he came on. He scored a typical Joe Willock goal which was great to see. Alex got 60 good minutes into his legs and that will do him the world of good." On facing Blackburn: "It's a huge game for us. We're absolutely committed to the FA Cup to do well and have been all season. We've had two difficult games away from home to get to this stage and now another one. We've been looking forward to this game so we know how important it is."

Kegs: Awful performance which papers over the cracks. Newcastle have morphed into a boring, passive, backwards and sideways passing team. Without Joelinton Newcastle have no drive or competence in midfield. Eddie Howe must be worried for his job if we don't win the cup and continue our fall down the league. Peter: Honestly having a hard time celebrating that win. That was a disgraceful performance. So passive and sloppy in the first half, a shambolic piece of defending to let them back in and fluffing chances left, right and centre. Only a near POTM performance from our second-string keeper saw us through. Reece: Newcastle definitely are not the same team they were last season. I think Blackburn played well and proved to be a challenge. Some more of the chances should have been taken. All in all, a win is a win - and now Newcastle are through to FA Cup quarter finals, which is great! Richard: I wish I could say I'm making my way home full of confidence for the next round but I'd by lying. I'd take a home draw against anyone, I suppose, but unless we somehow get our collective mojo back then our grit and determination will not be enough. I'd be very happy to be wrong, though.

Newcastle fans
Stephen: Much more like our old selves today. We still looked nervy before the first goal but at two up, we never felt in trouble. It's been a tough year but we are hanging on in there for the European places. Eddie has done a good job to keep us in contention despite the injuries and relatively small squad that has had to deal with all the fixtures. David: The best performance of 2024. Won 50/50 balls all day. Defence much sharper while Joe Willock and Tino Livramento were great. Sean Longstaff still not at his best, but otherwise it was a considerable improvement. Simon: Great result. Much better defensive shape and midfield giving greater opportunities to forward players. Not perfect but clearly a step in the right direction against a strong team with good away form this season. Definitely a result to push us forward this season. Well done lads, Eddie and staff. Alan: Let’s not get carried away - still closer to the bottom four than the top four. Hopefully we will climb another few places before the end of the season. WHY will they not start Livramento every game? He can play virtually any position. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/66b8/live/ad79c330-d8c1-11ee-a79a-a528d0194eb3.jpg

Newcastle 3-0 Wolves: Key statsichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/1440/cpsprodpb/14ADC/production/_132100748_gettyimages-1801993181.jpgNewcastle have won their first home Premier League game of 2024 – ending a run of four consecutive games in the competition without a win at St James' Park. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has recorded his 100th win in the Premier League, making him the eighth English manager to reach that milestone in the competition. Wolves have won just one of their nine away meetings with Newcastle in the Premier League (2-1 in December 2018 under Nuno Espirito Santo) and they’ve lost each of their last three visits to St James’ Park. Newcastle have scored in all 18 of their Premier League games against Wolves - only Arsenal (26 v West Brom and 19 v Wolves) have faced a side on more occasions with a 100% scoring record in the competition. Alexander Isak has scored 12 goals in his first 20 home Premier League games for Newcastle, only Alan Shearer (21), Andy Cole (21) and Les Ferdinand (16) have scored more in their first 20 at St James' Park for the Magpies. Each of Anthony Gordon’s last seven Premier League strikes have come at home. Only Mohamed Salah (13) and Leon Bailey (12) have been directly involved in more home goals than Gordon in the Premier League this season (11 – eight goals, three assists).

Former Manchester City and current Saudi Arabia coach Roberto Mancini has emerged as an option for Newcastle United should they decide to replace Eddie Howe this summer. Newcastle want to speed up Dan Ashworth's exit to Manchester United, as Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell heads a shortlist of candidates to replace him. Meanwhile, Newcastle United and Arsenal have been boosted in their pursuit of 20-year-old Sporting Lisbon and Ivory Coast centre-back Ousmane Diomande, as Chelsea now need to sell players before confirming any new arrivals this summer.

Manchester City 2-0 Newcastle United: Magpies must salvage a season heading for anti-climax..By Phil McNulty, Chief football writer.Newcastle United's long wait to win a trophy will now extend to 56 years and manager Eddie Howe must mount a salvage operation to stop a season of expectation ending as one of desperate anti-climax followed by heavy scrutiny. They were dismissed in the most routine manner by Manchester City as Pep Guardiola's side reached a record sixth successive FA Cup semi-final, with the game put to bed and Newcastle put to sleep by half-time after Bernardo Silva's two deflected efforts. City's goals were both laced with a heavy sprinkling of good fortune, but the big worry for Howe is that Newcastle never for one moment looked like they had the self-belief or conviction to win. As an FA Cup quarter-final contest, this was hopelessly one-sided, with the second half a rather tedious, timid spectacle that was only enlivened by the magnificent, noisy support of Newcastle's 8,000 travelling fans. Newcastle tried - that much cannot be denied - but they look jaded, in need of serious renewal, and a world away from the team that created such excitement on Tyneside by qualifying for this season's Champions League. The October night when Paris St Germain, Kylian Mbappe and all, were swept away 4-1 on a tide of Geordie passion and emotion is now a glorious, but very distant, memory. The stats were damning, with Newcastle only having two shots and just one on target in a game City dominated with 72% possession. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/ED02/production/_132947606_gettyimages-2082115690.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/3/16/ced83016-265f-43e3-8639-8755d6e1e2b4.jpgNewcastle manager Eddie Howe, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “We tried our very best to force them into mistakes, but they didn’t. They were very good. Conceding the two goals that we did didn’t help our cause. “It was an uphill battle. We covered a lot of ground, but when we had our moments our last pass was lacking. “The difference is their technical quality and their players who can get out of tight situations – it’s at the highest level. We’re trying to get to their level. “We’ve got 10 massive games left and are only a few points below seventh place [in the Premier League], so we’re looking to end the season on a high.” Former England and Newcastle striker Alan Shearer has been analysing the game on BBC One: "City are 38 games unbeaten here. When you are the opposing team coming here, you have to take. "Isak had chances in both halves, nothing. Dan Burn gave up a chance to shoot. You have to take those half chances to get any chance of a result. "This season has been tough for Newcastle, but there have been mitigating circumstances - the injuries, especially to Nick Pope and Joelinton. They miss both of those players a lot. "Eddie Howe still has plenty of credit in the bank. Whatever happens this season, whether they finish mid-table or qualify for Europe, Eddie Howe will be Newcastle's manager next season."
