Aaaaarrrgggghhhhhhhh! This has been going round my brain non-stop for over 18 hours, and all I can come up with is: Crystal Palace, Concord Rangers, Southport,...(Could add Leicester City).
All nicknames are related to sand. Southport (Sandgrounders), Concord Rangers (Beach Boys), Crystal Palace (used to be called the Glaziers and glass manufacture uses sand), Leicester are the Foxes....one type of fox is the Desert Fox...deserts have sand in them. So the final connection is to another sand-related nickname...e.g. Canvey Island (Islanders). I'm only posting this in the hope that it will draw out another clue from you! You're pretty close with the first one. Close, but not right? Come on Victoria, give us a clue, please!

Those four clubs were not originally named after towns.

Yep. (well musical acts - Foxes) So the connection could be to Doncaster Rovers (Donny - sorry!) or to FC Halifax Town (The Sha(y)men). Had never heard of the Sandgrounders band - but here they are!

Brentford, Watford, Alloa, Barnet (all Vespidae) Yes! Or maybe more accurately 'Hymenoptera'? I couldn't find any clubs with a nickname 'The Sawflies' or 'The Ants' though. I was going to put this on the 'Only Connect 2' thread, but thought the last question would have given this connection away too early. Seems it wouldn't have made any difference for you! I like that the Latin for Wasp is 'Vespa' and always thought the scooter was so named because of the sound of the engine. I've since read it is because of the shape and look of the scooter. I suppose both work; prefer mine though.

Yeah, I'd always assumed it was coz of the sound, too.
