Success is relative to the players the manager has at his disposal.

Success is relative to the players the manager has at his disposal. Also to the quality of international football (which has noticeably declined) and the quality of the opposition you face. Southgate's record against the top 10 teams is abysmal. We played reasonably well against the Dutch but in terms of overall performance the rest was sub-standard and not acceptable. We were very fortunate to beat the Swiss and the semi would have been a different game without the penalty award. Southgate lamenting the absence of K.Phillips as if he was peak-era Desailly was the final straw. He had one of the strongest, if not the strongest, squads at his disposal FFS. We all (exempting any lurking Scots or Taffs) want England to be able to compete against, and preferably beat, the very best in international football. We still cannot. Southgate being given the choice of remaining in post sums up everything wrong with English football.

If Howe and Potter are the answer to removing Southgate then England fans deserve all they get.....

It's not important if the players want him to stay. We had the same situation with Trollope. The players do not run the show. Howe or Potter? Lord almighty. One got promotion to the PL by openly cheating (i.e. flouting financial fair play rules) and the other flopped horribly at Chelsea. What about Hoddle?

Not surprised, think he has done well, but came up short at the crunch games...is Howe the next man..Potter certainly NOT...not sure there is an English manager out there at the moment willing to take the roll on ..

I`m Scottish, ( although I`ve never lurked in my life ). I still want England to compete against, and preferably beat, the best.

Gareth Southgate stands down as England manager..ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/1024/cpsprodpb/242c/live/cda0db40-435f-11ef-9e1c-3b4a473456a6.jpgGareth Southgate has spoken via the Football Association website to fans. He starts with: "As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all. "But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager."

If Howe and Potter are the answer to removing Southgate then England fans deserve all they get..... Nothing wrong with Eddie Howe Cheshire. One of the best man-managers in the PL and always makes players who join him better players. I agree with your view about Potter. UTG!

Well done Gareth Southgate. You did a tremendous job and earned the right to leave under your own terms. He took over a laughing stock in terms of top European nations and left England as one on the most consistently high achieving football teams in world football. He gave us all very good tournaments where we nearly did it despite losing at the last hurdle. He brought high standards in terms of behaviour, team culture and respect to the England team following on from where Allardyce had left us. Well done Gareth, you deserve all the plaudits coming your way.
I think there are some very good candidates out there, not many but the right ones if they want the post. If they don't want it then England may find it hard to replace him. And as is often said when replacing someone who’s done well but who has his critics……. Be careful what you wish for.
UTG!

If Howe and Potter are the answer to removing Southgate then England fans deserve all they get..... I agree with this. Potter is not proven at Premier League level even and Howe has had a shed load of cash made available at Newcastle and achieved not a lot. Jürgen Klopp or Pep Guardiola please

Striker and England captain Harry Kane was Southgate's most used players, playing in 81 of his 102 matches. Manchester City right-back Kyle Walker was Southgate's next most-used player under Southgate, winning 70 caps under him, with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and centre-back John Stones the joint-next highest on 68. Gareth Southgate's most used players as England manager: Harry Kane - 81 caps Kyle Walker - 70 caps Jordan Pickford - 68 caps John Stones - 68 caps Harry Maguire - 63 caps Declan Rice - 58 caps Marcus Rashford - 57 caps Raheem Sterling - 55 caps Kieran Trippier - 54 caps Jordan Henderson - 52 caps

Tears had been shed or he at least he seemed close to tears. Just seeing him there, it just felt like the final act. It is a tall order for his successor to try and better his record. There was clearly a split over Southgate. History will prove to be very kind to Southgate.

Jürgen Klopp or Pep Guardiola please Not everyone will like EH but as for ‘a shed load of cash’, about the same as most PL managers. And in the first half season he took Newcastle from looking at the Championship to mid table with a great brand of football. Next season qualification in the European Cup. A good solid record. And he did well over 4 seasons with AFCB in the PL, never a relegation fight with no money. It was only at the end when playing to empty stadiums, injuries and an important player refusing to play that AFCB went down. I don’t think he’ll want the England job yet. Still wants club football imo. I agree with you over Klopp. That would be the best option. But will he want it? UTG!

Robson, Venables and even Graham Taylor had such good records before becoming manager. When did we stop developing managers?
Talk of Klopp is misplaced for a number of reasons, not least because Eriksson and Capello were as good foreign managers as you are going to get, and the results weren't impressive at all.
Why did the FA not make it a priority to develop young coaches and bring them up through the system? Yet more complacency, favouritism and, ultimately, failure.

Just out of interest - people's views on their international experience.... Lot less than Southgate's. Eddie Howe - 2 England under 21 appearances. Newcastle Champions League, bottom of group but beat PSG Kieran McKenna - 7 Northern Ireland under 21 appearances. Has worked with Jose Mourinho and is well regarded. Sean Dyche - Has worked with England national under-21 football team as a temporary member of the backroom staff in September 2012. Has experience with Burnley in the Europa League. Russell Martin - played 29 times for Scotland. Studied for his UEFA Pro Licence at the Scottish FA in 2019. Gary O'Neil - 24 games for England at U19, U20 and U21. Captain England Under 20s in the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship. Played under Southgate at Middlesbrough.
