I thought our performance was really good. "You knew with the Netherlands they have more quality so they can punish you like they did, but there's more opportunity to play. Our midfield players, Foden especially, were key finding space and they had to keep changing what they were doing. "Bukayo, did an immense job. He started as a wing-back and he defended as a winger at times - it was one of those nights that everyone had to be flexible." On his substitutions: "We were happy with how Phil [Foden] and Harry [Kane] were playing. We have got a good bench, we had freshness and we know that Ollie can make those runs down the side. "This is what we came here to do and we have been building for two years. We have got to enjoy tonight, but equally it is such a quick turn around and we have a day less than the team who have been the best the tournament." England under Gareth Southgate:2018 World Cup: Semi-final. Euro 2020: Runners-up. 2022 World Cup: Quarter-final. Euro 2024: Finalists.

Get in! By far the best performance so far, we can win this, I'm totally convinced. Might be the beer but f*ck it, why should we be ashamed to show patriotism?

Good performance and deserved to win. But the Dutch had a much better side at Euro 96, with the likes of Davids, Seedorf, and Kluivert.
When Weghorst is your striking option, you really aren't very good.
The penalty was very fortunate.
Bellingham is still off it - very poor tonight.
In with a chance of beating Spain.

I agree, it goes to show that you can win a tournament without being the best team. Spain look good from what I've seen, maybe a little chaotic. Against Georgia they seemed to be turbocharged playing really fast with real intent, but since then I don't think they have had the same vigour, England on the other hand are in the ascendency I think but who knows, I don't want to be overly optimistic but I think it's more possible it has ever been before.

It's another landmark but we played well throughout the game. It was complicated. They kept changing so we had to change. It was so special at the end. On substitutions assisting and scoring: "Sometimes it can work that way. The most important thing is all of the squad can come into the game. Their attitudes have been exemplary and I'm so happy for Ollie." On Watkins coming on: "Harry got that knock in the first half. Ollie can press well and runs in behind. We had a goal cleared off the line and we hit the woodwork. I think we deserved to win tonight." On Phil Foden: "That's as well as he's played in an England shirt and he had a huge influence on the game." On England fans: "If you look at the numbers. It was like we were playing away but it wasn't like that with the noise." England boss Gareth Southgate, speaking in the post-match press conference, on what it shows about his side to come from behind again:"Character. I think definitely tonight we did not deserve to be behind. It was a moment. We started the game really well. It was a very complicated game because they kept changing the way they were building up, we changed the way we were defending. In the end players made so many good decisions on the field. "I was really pleased with the quality of our play. I'd imagine it was a long time since England had 60% possession against a team like the Netherlands. It is the modern way and shows the resilience of the group. Ollie Watkins has trained every day and been ready to play, as the whole group has been. "There's a lot of new players in the group, half have not been to a tournament but they have bonded so well, got each other's back and tonight was a good example of that." More from England boss Gareth Southgate on England's supporters: "I hope they are enjoying a few beers! We have had some incredible nights the last seven or eight years. These games have been dramatic because the goals have come so late. The only reason I took the job on was to try and bring success to the nation and improve English football. I am immensely proud to take this team to a final overseas. It will be a huge task but we are still here and fighting. More from Gareth Southgate, on being able to celebrate with the fans after receiving criticism earlier in the tournament:"We all want to be loved, right? When you are doing something for your country and you are a proud Englishman and when you don't feel that back and get all the criticism it is hard. To be able to celebrate a second final is very special. The travelling fans have been amazing. To be able to give them nights like this, and I think we have given them a few over the last six years, it means a lot. "If I hadn't been on the grass I'd have been celebrating and watching like they were. We are kindred spirits in many ways but I am the one who has to pick the team. To give them a night like tonight is very special."

Wednesday 10th July 2024 - UEFA European Championship - 2nd Semi-final - Result
England 2 (Kane 18 pen, Watkins 90) Netherlands 1 (Simons 7)
ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/0519/live/f6fd95e0-3302-11ef-a044-9d4367d5b599.jpg Match report by Phil McNulty, Chief football writer in Dortmund.England will face Spain in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin on Sunday after a last-minute strike from substitute Ollie Watkins sealed victory over the Netherlands. Gareth Southgate's side looked to be going into extra time for the third successive game after Harry Kane's contentious first-half penalty equalised a thunderous early strike from Xavi Simons until Watkins struck. England dominated the first half, with Phil Foden outstanding, hitting the post with one long-range effort and drawing a fine save from Dutch keeper Bart Verbruggen. The Netherlands, who saw Denzel Dumfries' header hit the bar before the break, took control after the break and it required important interventions from keeper Jordan Pickford to keep England level. England were facing another extra 30 minutes until a superb late strike on the turn from Watkins, on for Kane, sent England into their second successive European Championship final on a dramatic night in Dortmund.

Love our winning goal.
First of all a good run from Watkins and through ball from Palmer.Nice subs Gareth.
I'm sure the Dutch defender on Watkins did'nt think he was going to shoot.Did anyone? He looked like he was shepherding him, blocking etc.
The shot was quite the surprise.
Oh and our equaliser.I thought not a penalty at first,I was surprised to see VAR coming into play.
Then I thought, well if that incident had happened by eg the halfway line we would of got a free kick.
So I think yes,it was a penalty kick.
Not sure but I think for this tournament at least,UEFA have been looking at these decisions a bit differently. Not sure.

Studs up Studs up but very limited contact and Kane was over-acting. They also need to clarify the rules on handball - it's not simply ball to hand but a deliberate intent to block the ball with the hand. This hands behind the back stuff when going to block shots has been annoying me for some time.

Spain impressed me against France - they looked a decent side. But Morata is a bit of a donkey. I agree - the best team sometimes, but doesn't always, win the tournament. International football comes down to very small margins with luck playing a big part.

The clue was in Kane feeling the need to roll around as if he had been shot. Nobody has commented on Belllingham yet. His expression when he thought he was being subbed against the Swiss was priceless, as if offended by the very thought of being substituted. Someone needs to tell him that if his attitude doesn't improve, he'll be back playing for Birmingham.

Hate to see penalties being given for stuff like this. The worst I’ve seen to date was Havertz putting his trailing leg into defender then throwing himself to the floor when playing for Arsenal. Blatant cheating not clever play. If I’d been ref yellow for fouling defender and immediate second yellow for simulation. Cheats need to be punished not rewarded. Not saying Kane was cheating to that extent as there was contact after ball was played but he made a meal of it and the contact made no difference to the way he struck the ball

Players will drape their foot over a dangled leg without a second thought or invitation. Even worse, they are being trained to do this. Havertz irritates me anyway - such a pointless player. Technically gifted but no drive, determination or guts at all. Change the rules so that penalties are only given for the direct prevention of a goal scoring chance, only give pens for deliberate handball (see previous comment), and make running the ball into the corner, trying to pressurise the refs into decisions, and walking off deliberately slowly when subbed punishable offences.
