Ten-man West Ham claim rousing win against Chelsea..West Ham 3-1 Chelseaichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/8/21/705b9387-cf05-4dbe-a3a3-ab0ea7dbf374.jpgMichael Emons, BBC Sport
West Ham claimed a superb victory against big-spending Chelsea despite playing almost 30 minutes with 10 men. The Europa Conference League trophy, the Hammers' first silverware since 1980, was on display at the start of the day at London Stadium and the home fans went home happy after a resilient display against the odds from David Moyes' side. Declan Rice lifted that trophy in June but his replacement, £30m signing from Southampton James Ward-Prowse, produced an impressive debut with two assists for both the opening two goals for the hosts. Nayef Aguerd headed in Ward-Prowse's corner after only seven minutes before teenager Carney Chukwuemeka equalised, with Chelsea wasting a chance to go ahead as Enzo Fernandez's penalty was saved by Alphonse Areola. Michail Antonio then raced on to Ward-Prowse's pass to restore West Ham's lead, but the sending off of Aguerd for two bookable offences left the result in the balance. But Moyes would have been proud of his side's efforts to stay in front despite the one-man deficit for almost 30 minutes, before the victory was sealed through Lucas Paqueta's injury-time penalty. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/25f5/live/c4003e40-3f83-11ee-a9b8-b7fea7159973.jpgWest Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse

West Ham 3-1 Chelsea: What David Moyes said..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/AC6C/production/_129304144_gettyimages-1480170799.jpgWest Ham manager David Moyes to BBC Sport: "Extremely satisfying. They're really good. They played very well last weekend and well today. "We hung in there at times, were resolute. Even at 10 men we stuck in and got another goal. "I didn't think we played well in the first half. We got a goal from a James Ward-Prowse assist. We know he's always capable of that. We never played when we got the ball after that and they dominated. "We tried to get closer to them in the second half and we did. We stuck at it, did the basics well and got the three points. "We've always been not bad at them [set-pieces]. You can't score without good deliveries. Hopefully he [Ward-Prowse] will bring the good deliveries. Good start for him today. "I told him [Michail Antonio] it was a brilliant finish, a centre forward's goal. "Chelsea are a really good side. I'd be surprised if they're not challenghging the top teams. "The crowd helped today. We're just back from Prague. They'll need to stick with us - we have a few things we need to improve. "I have no doubt we'll probably get another couple of players in before the window."

Konstantinos Mavropanos: West Ham sign ex-Arsenal defender from Stuttgart..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/12649/production/_130873357_konstantinosmavropanoswestham.jpg Versatile defender Konstantinos Mavropanos can play at centre-back or right-backWest Ham United have completed the signing of Greece defender Konstantinos Mavropanos from Stuttgart for an undisclosed fee. Mavropanos, 25, has signed a five-year contract with the Hammers and has taken the number 15 shirt. He was signed by Arsenal in January 2018 but only made seven Premier League appearances before being loaned out. "I'm really looking forward to the next step in my career," he said. "I will give everything for the shirt. "I am really happy and excited to be here, and to be back in the Premier League." Mavropanos, who has been capped 19 times by Greece, becomes West Ham's third signing of the summer after midfielders James Ward-Prowse and Edson Alvarez arrived from Southampton and Ajax respectively. He played 34 times for Stuttgart in all competitions last season as the German side narrowly avoided relegation, and made 89 appearances for them overall, scoring eight goals. Mavropanos had joined the Bundesliga club from Arsenal on a season-long loan in July 2020, which was extended for a second season, before the move was subsequently made permanent. Hammers boss David Moyes backed Mavropanos to provide competition to the club's existing defenders. "I'm pleased to welcome Konstantinos to West Ham," said the 60-year-old Scot. "We've been looking to add to our centre-half options this summer, so it's good we've been able to bring in an international defender of his ability. "We're really looking forward to integrating him into the group."

The Hammers have had a second bid of £35.8m (42m euros) for Kudus rejected by Ajax. Manchester City could resurrect an £80m deal with West Ham for Brazil midfielder Lucas Paqueta, 25, in January, once a Football Association investigation into the player's alleged betting rule breaches is concluded.

Brighton & Hove Albion 1 West Ham United 3
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/4BD3/production/_130911491_gettyimages-1640451073.jpg James Ward-Prowse's opener was the midfielder's 50th Premier League goalWest Ham United "executed their game plan perfectly" to continue an unbeaten start and stun Brighton with a clinical counter-attacking display, according to goalscorer James Ward-Prowse. The win means West Ham end the day top of the Premier League on goals scored, although Manchester City and Liverpool could both leap above them with wins on Sunday. JWard-Prowse opened the scoring with his first Hammers goal when he tapped in from two yards out in the 19th minute after good work from Michail Antonio. Jarrod Bowen added a second for the visitors in the 58th minute, bringing down Said Benrahma's cross before poking the ball into the corner. And though Brighton continually dominated possession and territory, Bowen set up Antonio to drill a shot into the corner for the away side's third in the 63rd minute. The Seagulls scored a late consolation goal when Pascal Gross' drive effort found the far corner, but David Moyes' men survived a late surge of Brighton pressure to go on to victory. "A lot of effort went in to the game plan, you have to respect Brighton," Ward-Prowse told BBC Match of the Day. "We denied Brighton space and were compact and clinical. We had the composure to make the most of our chances when we had them - we executed our game plan perfectly." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/1806B/production/_130911489_gettyimages-1640443520.jpgWest Ham have made an excellent start, backing up their win over Chelsea last weekend with a ruthless display in Sussex. Incredibly, the visitors' 31 successful passes in the first half was the lowest total reached by a Premier League side since November 2006, when Watford had 30 against Portsmouth. But they still went ahead through Ward-Prowse, who bundled Antonio's cross over the line after Adam Webster was caught in possession. It was Ward-Prowse's third goal involvement in just his second game for the Hammers having joined from boyhood club Southampton this summer for around £30m. "It's been fantastic. I can't speak highly enough of the fans and the people that have helped me settle," the England midfielder added. As Brighton pushed after the restart West Ham exploited the space their players left behind, and Bowen brilliantly controlled Benrahma's cross-field ball in a counter-attack before finding the bottom corner. Five minutes later the three points were wrapped up thanks to Antonio's fine finish after creating space for himself. The Jamaica international almost added a fourth in the closing stages but prodded a shot over when through on goal. Ward-Prowse also had a chance to add a fourth late on, but his shot from a tight-angle was saved before the rebound off a Brighton defender hit the cross bar. "Today was a well-deserved three points," Moyes told BBC Match of the Day. "All the forward players had a really good contribution."

Brighton 1-3 West Ham United - What Moyes said...
West Ham boss David Moyes to BBC Match of the Day: "I'm thrilled with the three points because we haven't won here for years. It's been the same coming here and not getting the results. Today was a well deserved three points, Brighton did a good job but we also did a good job in other parts of the game. "Brighton have got an extremely good manager and his side are causing problems to plenty of teams, not just us. We worked hard on not getting picked off easily and we defended really well. "Our counter-attacks were really good. Two or three years ago we were really good on the counter and we showed that. All the forward players had a really good contribution today. On Edson Alvarez: "We know that he'll get better as time goes on. He did a really good defensive job without the ball. Today was about coming away with points, so I was really pleased for Edson. Tomas Soucek went off injured and we were losing bodies in the middle of the park." On the potential signing of Mohammed Kudus: "I don't want to talk about players who are not at my club yet but I do believe that he came in for a medical today, but I couldn't confirm at the moment how that went or anything else. What I do want is competition and thinking about pushing on again, having a go and playing against the top teams, trying to do well." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/AC6C/production/_129304144_gettyimages-1480170799.jpg

Here are some of your thoughts:Henry: We already have a good squad, so I wouldn't be disappointed if we didn't make any more transfers. However it would be an amazing coup if we could bring in Hugo Etikite on loan from PSG. I hope the club doesn't sell Pablo Fornals, cult hero player at West Ham. Ian: We look as if we are going to get at least one striker in. What I would really like is both left and right wingbacks young and fast where we could play three at the back more effectively. Can also Lingard coming in to help with the home grown rule? Chris: Striker, striker, striker. We can pick up goals from all over the park but Antonio, while he brings a lot more than goals to the team, has never been prolific and Ings hasnt set the team alight. With Scamacca gone we need competition up front and a regular goalscorer. Mark: If we can sign Yuri Alberto before the deadline I believe we have a very competitive side that can challenge for Europa league and a top six finish. Elias: Dream deadline is we get Ekitike and/or Alberto and agree a deal for Kostic. All three quality players and add a bit of depth to the squad.

In fact, our biggest defeat was the 5-1 loss to Newcastle United last season, and we have only lost by three or more goals on four other occasions in the 183 games Moyes has overseen since his first back in charge on 1st January 2020. That record alone is testament to how Moyes has tightened us up. It is also evident in our meetings with Manchester City at London Stadium. Before his return, City relished visiting Stratford, winning all five of their games at the venue by an aggregate score line of 22-1, including two 4-0 victories, two 5-0 thrashings and a 4-1 triumph. Under Moyes, West Ham have avoided those scorelines against everyone, but against City, they had avoided defeat in three of their past five home matches - including three draws and a penalty shootout win. Losing at the weekend will not have come as a surprise to anyone, but on another day, we could have taken something from Pep Guardiola's side and no-one would have complained. We were good going forward, difficult to break down and a danger at set-pieces. We held the champions at arm's length for 76 minutes before their world-class qualities eventually overcame our efforts. In the end, we were beaten by the better team, but it was not an easy three points for them. That is all down to what Moyes has built, and we can travel to Anfield safe in the knowledge the game will not be easy for Liverpool either.

West Ham: Four fans get banning orders for AZ Alkmaar disorder..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/960E/production/_131241483_gettyimages-1489341233.jpg West Ham won the Europa Conference League last seasonFour football fans have been issued with banning orders following disorder at West Ham's Europa Conference League semi-final with AZ Alkmaar last season. Phil Sands 37, from Newham, Billy Simpson 27, from Benfleet, Jacob Rankin 30, from Sidcup and Blue Gregory 29, from Colchester have been banned from all West Ham matches. They will also have to surrender passports during European game weeks to prevent them travelling abroad. AZ Alkmaar banned 43 fans in May. The Metropolitan Police said it worked with colleagues from Netherlands Police to identify fans fighting on footage which was circulating on social media. PC Jack Muscatt from the MPS Football Unit said: "These cases show the collaborative work between police in different countries to deal with supporters committing offences. "Following your club in Europe should be a great experience and we ask supporters to be respectful while visiting other countries. "Passion is what makes football great but there is a line, don't overstep it and regret missing memorable trips with your mates." The Dutch club were fined £68,670 for the behaviour of their fans at the AFAS stadium and were ordered to play one Uefa match behind closed doors, although that sanction has been suspended for two years. West Ham players confronted a group of AZ Alkmaar fans who attacked an area in which their friends and family were watching the match.

West Ham boss David Moyes reacts to the news he is set to take charge of his 900th game in management against Sheffield United: “I don’t think there is a secret. I’ve been in a long time, you have to have an incredible love of the game and you have to want to continue wanting to improve. “I don’t know how many different managers have come into the Premier League over the seasons but you have to keep evolving to keep up and I’m enjoying every minute of being the manager of West Ham.” ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/29/411039bd-8441-4b4d-a4f5-1cee3175d60b.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/6cce/live/e0885d20-4264-11ee-9b58-cb80889117a8.jpgWe asked for your views on Saturday's game between West Ham United and Sheffield United.
Here are some of your comments:
West Ham fansFaith: We should've scored one or two more but this is the kind of game we'd have lost a few years ago. Love or hate the tactics, David Moyes is quietly going about making us hard to beat and challenging in the league and cups. We kept Sheffield United to a few half chances and looked confident throughout. Hopefully we can see Kudus in the starting line-up soon. Bill: A competent performance though not inspiring. Thought Vlad Coufal had a very good game. Colin: A good solid start to the season, we have spent some of the money wisely from the sale of Declan. If we can build more consistency and get other people on the score sheet we will be doing just dandy. Pedro: Would have been disappointing not to beat Sheffield Utd at home but it is still a great start to the season for the Hammers. Our best chance of getting into the Champions League is winning the Europa League as top four is not realistic with this squad. Been hoping for another Antonio for five years (to give him a rest) but still not found one yet!

Hammers win award for equality, diversity and inclusion efforts..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/a88f/live/2764c450-614f-11ee-b101-6f93d6dfbcc2.jpgThe Premier League has recognised West Ham's work towards equality, diversity and inclusion with its highest level of award in the area. The Hammers were previously awarded the Premier League Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Standard in 2020. A club statement, external said: "Following a rigorous and in-depth assessment by an expert panel this summer, focusing on evidence of EDI across all areas of the club, the Premier League concluded that the Hammers have continued to make fantastic progress in this area and deserve to maintain the advanced level." Striker Michail Antonio added: "Equality, diversity and inclusion is so important to the club and everyone who is part of the West Ham family. "Together we are really involved in the local community. We are all proud of that and proud we have received this special recognition."

Everyone was saying that they didn't want him to stay because of the way it went in the league. "The way they're going, there's going to be no great concerns about relegation. Just by the way they're playing will tell you that, because it's not just about winning games but it's how you win games. "You look at them in Europe and they should be one of the two sides [going through from their Europa League group] and he wants to stay in that League Cup. That'll be a big night against Arsenal [in the fourth round]. He [Moyes] is in a good position because he wants to win something, so he'll put a team out to show that to the fans."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/cf43/live/bbc86660-62cb-11ee-94c0-b3871aa6e509.jpgWest Ham forward Michail Antonio says Saturday's controversy surrounding Liverpool and Tottenham has strengthened his view that "VAR should be binned". He believes football would be better if it went back to its "original state" without the technology, with the acceptance that human errors are likely to occur. He told BBC Sounds' Footballer's Football Podcast: "VAR should be binned. That’s my thoughts. It’s not the first time I’ve said it, it’s not going to be the last time I’ll say it. "At the end of the day, VAR got brought in because of the debates that were going on after every single game. Too many human errors that were happening. You brought in technology so there won’t be so many debates. But if you look at the stats, the debates are still going on. Now we’ve got technology and there are still human errors. "It’s got to the stage where you need to start accepting that human errors are part of football and it made football better. People are losing their heads over it but referees are human and humans can make mistakes. Those mistakes are part of the parcel of football. Trying to change it is not making it any better. You might as well bring it back to the original state of football and how football was made." Newcastle's Callum Wilson added: "For me, the VAR situation was a disappointing one because that’s one that stands out and has had a spotlight on it as a human error. "How many other little fine margins have gone by over time that have slipped through the net and no-one's actually noticed because they want to keep the integrity of the game or make sure people are still voting for VAR? "I personally don’t really like it anyway, I’ve said that from the start. Are they going to change it? Probably not. It’s one error in however many games. For me it’s hold your hands up, say sorry, someone is maybe going to get a slap on the wrist and we carry on as normal and next week it’s forgotten about and there will be someone else to talk about."
