'It would be a great achievement' - Moyes on brink of breaking English record..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/b6fb/live/9c93bb50-62ee-11ee-9c3f-2d385fa88c92.jpgDavid Moyes will write his name into the history books if West Ham avoid defeat against Freiburg in the Europa League on Thursday. On the back of last season's Europa Conference League triumph, if the Hammers win or draw in Germany, the Hammers will make it 17 consecutive European matches unbeaten, which would be a record for an English team. That would take them one clear of the records set by Don Revie's Leeds in the 1960s and Bill Nicholson's 1970s Tottenham side. When told this in his pre-match press conference, Moyes said: "I didn't know that. Not bad names then, are they?" "People who know football will tell you they were two incredibly gifted managers over a long period in English football. "It would be a great achievement if we can do that. Let's hope we can keep it going. We've done well in Europe over the last couple of seasons. We want to try to continue that." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1326B/production/_131334487_westham.jpgWest Ham can break the record for the most European matches unbeaten by an English side when they play SC Freiburg in the Europa League on Thursday. The Hammers are on a run of 16 games without defeat, level with Pep Guardiola's current Manchester City team, Don Revie's Leeds in the 1960s and Bill Nicholson's 1970s Tottenham side.

The Hammers have now gone a record 17 matches unbeaten - incredibly winning 16. Now in their third successive European campaign under David Moyes, they have now played 29 games in Uefa competition, winning 22 and losing just four - two of which were in the Europa League semi-final against Eintracht Frankfurt in 2022. Moyes deserves credit for playing teams strong enough to make an impact. Having qualified for Europe, it always seems strange to me when managers opt not to pick their strongest sides. SUNDAY 8th OCTOBER 2023 - PREMIER LEAGUE
West Ham United 2 Newcastle United 2
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/13534/production/_131365197_gettyimages-1712892516.jpg Mohammed Kudus scored his second West Ham goal in his seventh appearance for the London clubWest Ham's Mohammed Kudus scored an 89th-minute equaliser to deny Newcastle United victory in a thriller at London Stadium. Newcastle looked to be heading for a fifth straight win when Alexander Isak's second-half double turned the game around, following Tomas Soucek's eighth-minute opener for the Hammers. But Kudus' first Premier League goal since joining West Ham in the summer, a driven effort into the bottom corner, ensured the points were shared in the capital. West Ham and Newcastle stayed seventh and eighth respectively in the Premier League table as both sides returned to action after wins in Europe. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/B4A6/production/_131364264_kudusgoal.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/5E66/production/_131366142_hi087194256.jpgEngland forward Jarrod Bowen has signed a new contract with West Ham, says Hammers boss David Moyes. The 26-year-old, who joined from Hull City for £18m on a five-year deal in 2020, had reportedly been a target for Liverpool and Newcastle. He has scored 45 goals in 166 games for West Ham, including the winner in the Europa Conference League final against Fiorentina in June. "Jarrod has signed a new deal, which is great news for us," said Moyes. "He's done amazingly since he's been here. He continues to improve. "If you think of his own development as an individual, he started off at Hereford, moved to Hull and now in the Premier League and getting a chance to be in the England squad. I think he'll get better as well." Bowen has scored five times in nine appearances this season, earning a recall to the England squad for games against Australia and Italy in October.

West Ham 2-2 Newcastle: What David Moyes said:ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/60f9/live/5623f570-63bd-11ee-9741-3b3177d51032.jpgWest Ham United manager David Moyes speaking to BBC Sport: "Thrilled with a point up against a really good team, who are probably as good as most of the teams in Europe at the moment. Great point for us. "I don't think it is a free-kick [for Newcastle's first goal]. I'm really disappointed with a few decisions today. The two goals we conceded are terrible, so they are bigger faults. We are not here to talk about the referees, but their player [Bruno Guimaraes] is very lucky not see a second yellow. "We nearly won it in the end. Newcastle played well and we didn't give them too many opportunities. We had a few ourselves. For us, I'm pleased that we got a point here." On whether goalscorer Mohammed Kudus will start more games: "He will be in the team for years to come, so we are not in a huge hurry. The team is getting good results, but he can play a big role in the future."

Here are some of your comments:Dave: Sorry but I loathe the way we play at the moment. Only 35% possession at home is nonsense. When we finally had a go at them in the last 10 minutes, I could only see one winner. Come on Moyes, take a positive approach from the start! Julian: Very good first half. Seriously flat start to the second half and we let Newcastle back into the game, through some poor decisions by the referee. However, Ward-Prowse lifts us every time we get a corner and Paqueta was class. A great equaliser and we could have nicked it at the end. Price: I'm sure pundits will call it 'gamesmanship' but Newcastle cheated a lot today. Bookings for time wasting were dished out, they even tried moving a wall twice. Antonio and Paqueta got brought down frequently, but the officials just didn't seem to care. Great first half, poor in the second half. James: West Ham were excellent again. However, we didn't seem to get the rub of the green with regard to decisions. Newcastle, by the laws, should have been reduced to 10 men midway through the first half. It probably would have spoilt the game, but the rules are the rules. We did well to fight back and get the equaliser.

West Ham, Brighton, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth are interested in 27-year-old Stuttgart and Guinea forward Serhou Guirassy, who is the leading goalscorer in the Bundesliga so far this season. West Ham United and France defender Kurt Zouma, 28, is a January transfer target for the Saudi Pro League. The Hammers have identified Manchester United and England centre-back Harry Maguire, 30, and Bayer Leverkusen's Burkinabe defender Edmond Tapsoba, 24, as potential replacements. West Ham want to tie down Brazil midfielder Lucas Paqueta, 26, to a new contract at the club.

Aston Villa 4 West Ham United 1
ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/10/23/a1332f66-b2eb-4071-9816-9711c690dbca.jpg West Ham's development under David Moyes has also been highly impressive, if a little more gradual. After winning the Europa Conference League last season, the Hammers have continued to look sharp and Bowen tested Emiliano Martinez in the first half of this tussle while Lucas Paqueta lost his bearings in a good position and sent an acrobatic overhead kick away from goal. But the Brazilian, who almost joined Manchester City in the summer, switched off as he let compatriot Douglas Luiz get a free run towards goal to score the opener. Just after half-time, a loose pass backwards from Paqueta allowed Konsa to nip in front of Edson Alvarez, who brought down the Villa defender for the penalty. Bowen gave the Hammers hope as a speculative effort resulted in his 100th career goal for a league club - his first also came at Villa Park in August 2017, earning Hull a 1-1 draw in the Championship. Cash turned a Nayef Aguerd effort behind as the visitors briefly threatened an equaliser, but they were unable to avoid a third league defeat - their first two were against Manchester City and Liverpool. West Ham manager David Moyes speaking to Sky Sports: "We weren't as resolute as we have been and we need to be harder to play against but we were up against a really good Aston Villa side. "We didn't do well in the final third. There were opportunities to pick people out. We had a few chances in the first half but didn't pick people out. We were narrowly down at half-time and we came out hoping to get ourselves back in it then gave away a stupid penalty. "That didn't help us but all credit to the players before they fought back and made a game of it for a while. "There were other things in the game. I don't think Edson Alvarez should go down in the tackle but I don't think it should be a penalty either, so there we go. "There were opportunities all game. Our balls into the box were not executed well enough. That was probably the biggest disappointment. Lots of things were actually OK. But when you're not scoring then you can't concede and need to be hard to beat. You need to be ugly at the back if you have to be. We were nice to them and helped them." On reaching top six level: "I see the players every day and know the levels. We need to play really well to keep it up with the top six teams. "The players are good players but as you can see, if this is the level we need to reach, then we need to improve greatly."

Here are some of your comments:
West Ham fans
John: Villa are on fire at the moment, they wanted it more and the result reflected that. My biggest moan is that we didn’t really put up a fight for 70 minutes of the game. Villa had movement, determination, they were diving all over the place and scrapping. In contrast, West Ham looked a bit pedestrian. Antonio didn’t contribute enough. Gerald The same team set up every week and it’s not working. I would like to see attacking football. If Moyes cannot deliver this then the club will finish mid-table again. We need a completely different approach. Tony: A great, evenly-matched game of two sides eager to challenge for the top four positions. Villa edged it, however even at 3-1 down after 77 minutes West Ham played like they could salvage at least a point. So different from West Ham of old. Hazel: We were rubbish today. Paqueta should have stopped showing off and played for the team. We need a new centre-forward as Antonio always works hard but he needs a rest.

West Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse speaking to BBC Sport: "I think it was an entertaining match for the neutral. We had a few chances in the first half in certain moments and a few individual errors. We know collectively as team we can do a lot better than that. "Just a bad day and one that we go away now and reflect on and become hard to beat again. It's in West Ham's DNA, that ability to not be beaten easily. "There's so many games in the season. It's important that you don't dwell on it but we will have a good look at what went wrong and make sure we show a reaction in the next game." On climbing up the table: "This club wants to be in [the top 6] of the table, challenging. I think today is a good realisation of what it takes to be at that level. "As long as we come away from this knowing what needs to be done to get in there, it will be a valuable day come the end of the season if we learn from it."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/9BE0/production/_131540993_gettyimages-1758193788.jpg Olympiakos were without a win in their past six home games against English clubs in major European competitionsWest Ham slipped to their first Europa League defeat of the season as they were beaten at Olympiakos. Kostas Fortounis surged through the West Ham defence and struck from 25 yards to open the scoring. Angelo Ogbonna then turned into his own net just before the break to further deflate the Irons. Lucas Paqueta's brilliant volley in the 87th minute came too late with the Hammers unable to salvage something from the game. David Moyes' side remain top of Group A despite losing. Olympiakos started brightly, Sotiris Alexandropoulos' early effort forcing Alphonse Areola to save low down to his left. The home side were winless in their past 11 Europa League games, their longest run without victory in major European competition, but there was no lack of confidence against West Ham. The Hammers dominated possession but looked disjointed throughout, with Said Benrahma firing against the side-netting in the early stages. James Ward-Prowse whipped a promising free-kick wide of the post, while Danny Ings got on the end of a corner but could not keep his header down and it nestled on the roof of the net. West Ham became the first English side to go 17 consecutive games in European competition without defeat when they won at Freiburg this month. However, they looked lacklustre from the start in Greece with seven changes made from the team that lost 4-1 at Aston Villa on Sunday. Buoyed by a raucous home crowd, Olympiakos were on the front foot from the outset and had two early corners to show their intent. Poor defending was to blame for both first-half goals, Konstantinos Mavropanos affording Fortounis space, whose brilliant individual effort was struck home from the edge of the box. Ogbonna then flicked his leg at the ball following a hopeful cross swung in by Rodinei as West Ham conceded two goals in the last 15 minutes of the first half. Paqueta halved the deficit with a superb left-footed volley into the bottom corner after Michail Antonio's cross was only half cleared, but it was too little, too late as Moyes' side were made to pay for an ineffectual display away from home. This was just West Ham's second group-stage defeat in nine such matches, and they will look to get back to winning ways when they host Olympiakos on November 9th.

The Hammers boss made seven changes for the tie, admitting he had an eye on upcoming games against Everton and Arsenal. Moyes said: "Look, we changed a lot of players tonight, we've got the Premier League coming up and we've got a League Cup game next week and we'd won the first two games in the group, which gave us leeway to make changes tonight. "But maybe I have to recognise that while we didn't win the Conference League games easily, as they were all tough games, coming to Olympiakos after winning away in Freiburg - which was a good result - this wasn't a good result and wasn't a good performance. "In our heads we certainly had a bigger picture in our heads and that was going into Sunday. "I don't think anybody could say the team we started with wasn't a good team and wasn't a team capable of winning or performing. "Many of them have been very good players for us over the years and still are." On Sunday's opponents Everton, David Moyes said: "We’ve got ourselves back and will get ourselves ready for it. "Every Premier League game is difficult and we’ll approach it as we approach every other game. "Everton are a hard nut to crack, they’ve probably played a bit better away from home this season. I don’t see teams beating them easily, I see a resilient team who keep at it and they have players capable of scoring goals." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/10/27/6478423e-b0d0-414a-9e75-2948b89217f3.jpgDavid Moyes on Everton boss Sean Dyche: "I think Sean has done a brilliant job keeping them in the Premier League last year when it was the toughest I can remember on the relegation side. Congratulations to him for that. "It looks as if it might be a difficult period at Everton right now with the financial situation, but he’s steering them through it." On the importance of squad rotation in Europe and the Premier League, David Moyes said: "You have to look back at those 17 unbeaten games and in all 17 we’ve made changes. "I’ve always wanted to use players in the squad, to give them the opportunity to show what they can do and we did it last night. "What I will say, is that this year is the hardest group we’ve been drawn in." A final word from West Ham manager David Moyes on four of the club's next five fixtures being at home: "It does feel like an advantage. "At the start of the season we had what I thought was an unfair start when we had three of the first four away from home. Hopefully, it will help us now. "We’ve been good enough at home, we’ve had some tough games and got some tough ones to come as well."

WEDNESDAY 1st NOVEMBER 2023 - EFL CUP - FOURTH ROUND..By Emma Smith, BBC sport.
WEST HAM UNITED 3 (White 16 og, Kudus 50, Bowen 60) Arsenal 1 (Ødegaard 90+6)Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said "I'm disappointed with myself" after his side were knocked out of the Carabao Cup in the fourth round following a 3-1 defeat by West Ham. Arteta made six changes to his starting XI, with Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and captain Martin Odegaard on the bench. The Arsenal side selected produced a below-par display - for which Arteta took the blame. "I'm very disappointed. I'm responsible for that," he said. "We're out of the Cup, we wanted to play a very different game and compete. "The game took a direction because of the first goal but we have to see much more from the team and earn the right to win. "I'm disappointed with myself. We wanted to play in a different way and we weren't able to do that. Every time we lose the pain is there. "We have to use this pain and this defeat to prepare the best way for Newcastle [in the Premier League] on Saturday." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/8CBD/production/_131592063_gettyimages-1769280635.jpgBen White scored the second own goal of his professional career to hand West Ham the lead against Arsenalichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/1440/cpsprodpb/17E7F/production/_131591979_gettyimages-1769261327.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/11/1/766fad2f-2f63-47bc-82a1-3000c93a96dc.jpgWest Ham boss David Moyes, speaking to Sky Sports: "We've done a lot of good things. We've got the goals which we maybe haven't done for the last one or two games. It was a big win against a really good side. I thought the players did a good job defensively. In the main we kept a really good team down to not too many chances. "Okay, we got a bit fortunate with the first goal but they [Arsenal] are a big threat from set-pieces. We can be that as well. "We have not been at the level, but we were always going to bounce-back and tonight was the prefect way to do it." Playing in a central position compared to being wide: "A lot of running! A different position, but I have played there a few times. "I predominately am on the right, it is a bit different but one thing for me is I will always run and work hard - I feel that is a main is part of my game." On where he prefers playing: "Wherever. It is a boring answer but I will play wherever there is different positions right or upfront, but I do not mind." On relationship with Mohammed Kudos: "He is a special player. Kind of similar to myself left footed and off the right wing. "I was thinking where do his he need me to help him, but it is about knowing the players and he is a top player. The Hammers are top of their group on six points, level on goal difference with Germany's Freiburg. West Ham won the Europa Conference League last season, their first European trophy since 1965. "I want to make sure we get the wins and qualify," said Moyes. "We're going out there, we want to be in Europe after Christmas, if we can win tomorrow night we might have got ourselves in one of the tournaments, whether it's the Europa League or the Conference. "We didn't play well [at Olympiakos a fortnight ago], nowhere near our standards our levels. I wouldn't hide that at all. I'm looking for much better tomorrow night." Moyes' side were on a 17-match unbeaten run in Europe, which was a record for an English club, before defeat against Olympiakos two weeks ago. West Ham have two wins and one defeat from their opening three games and a victory against Olympiakos on Thursday would put them on the brink of reaching the knockout stages. Centre-back Kurt Zouma did not train on Wednesday but will be assessed on Thursday to see whether he can play any part in the match.
