West Ham agree Maguire deal..Simon Stone, BBC SportWest Ham United have agreement in principle with Manchester United to sign defender Harry Maguire for £30m. Personal terms are still being discussed but they are not expected to be a problem. West Ham are closing in on a new centre-back. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/8/9/a54b500a-db38-4c6b-8d1c-798ecb42dc6b.jpgMaguire's final United appearance ?Harry Maguire started Manchester United's 1-1 pre-season friendly draw with Athletic Club on Sunday, in what looks to be his last appearance for the Reds. During his time at the club, the England international played 175 times and was captain between 2020 and 2023. The arrivals of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez in recent years have seen Maguire become surplus to requirements at Old Trafford, and West Ham represents a new start for the centre-back. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/8/9/7ccf46bc-48a4-4bad-9960-7198ca2db89b.jpgMaguire's limited gametimeHarry Maguire made just 16 Premier League appearances last season, with Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof preferred in central defence by Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag. At times, left-back Luke Shaw was selected their with Maguire on the bench, too. The defender played a key role for England in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar but come the end of the 2022-23 season - in which he lifted the Carabao Cup - Maguire was relived of captaincy duties by his manager. In what looks to be his final season at the club, the 30-year-old played 31 times in all competitions. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/8/9/19ae54d8-00b8-4c5c-a2fd-415e7a78aaff.jpgMaguire a key target for MoyesUnited manager Erik ten Hag said he wants to keep Maguire, he did so after taking the captaincy off the England man at the start of pre-season. David Moyes has made Maguire one of his key targets this summer, although West Ham have taken their time doing business. The exit of Declan Rice leaves West Ham without an obvious captain and Moyes has opted not to name a replacement so far. Current first choice central defenders Nayef Aguerd and Kurt Zouma have both had injury problems in recent months. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/8/9/c8b9c1c7-3909-49c5-8bce-b199ee5b1d83.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/2251/live/a89ceed0-209f-11ee-941e-23d1e9ab75fa.pngAnon: Perhaps in the Ferguson era the pressure for playing for Man Utd was different, but nowadays it's no different than playing for any team trying to get into the top six. The fans and price tag are to blame for Maguire's perceived lack of success there, not the actual shirt anymore. Chris: Great move for Maguire. Out of the spotlight at Man U. I'm sure he'll be good for West Ham. Pressure at Man U is different from any other English club. Ian: Harry Maguire is a talented footballer for the "smaller" teams. He didn't really stand a chance at Utd as he was from the first minute under scrutiny due to his price tag. England will benefit from him playing week in week out. Win-win situation for him. Being a Man Utd fan myself I am relieved to get the 30m for him and hopefully buy Amrabat and sign Jonny Evans on a free. Danny: Great move for Maguire and hopefully he can start to show his England form for the Hammers. In the last 2 years he was named in the Euro 2020 team of the tournament and wasn't far off the World Cup team of the tournament. Good luck to him! Luke: I'm a United fan, and personally I'm relieved for Maguire that he's got a move. Criticism of him was getting out of hand, some of it justified and some of it not, but that's what comes at big clubs like Utd. I really hope he excels at WHU and proves a lot of people wrong. It's the right move for everyone. Ed, London: This is definitely a win for both sides. You might feel a £50m loss is laughable but he is not part of ETH future - we need to trust the process. As for Maguire himself - he'll do much better at West Ham, their playing style is more suited for a "stay in the box" defender, he will definitely improve their defence!

West Ham agree Ward-Prowse fee..by Simon Stone, BBC sportIt is not just Harry Maguire who West Ham have agreed with, the London club have also agreed a fee with Southampton's James Ward-Prowse. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/8/9/c5111a11-a36e-401f-8fd6-a50c7f3590d9.jpgFee in the region of £30m..West Ham have agreed a fee which is thought to be in the region of £30m. David Moyes' side have been trying to sign Ward-Prowse for most of the summer but Southampton have rejected their advances. However, it has felt inevitable since Saints were relegated from the Premier League that their captain would leave and it appears that will now happen. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/8/9/352aaf67-af2a-4579-b806-0f8919ec4905.jpgJames Ward-Prowse: A consistently key performerDespite Southampton's relegation from the Premier League last season, James Ward-Prowse still managed to rack up 11 goals in 41 appearances, in all competitions. Prior to this, he scored the same amount in 42 appearances and nine in 44 the season before. It's safe to say, then, that the England midfielder is consistent. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/8/9/b49e12d1-d6b2-4221-a642-92bee8689813.jpgWard-Prowse: The end of an eraJames Ward-Prowse is on the verge of completing his move from Southampton to West Ham, bringing an end to his time at the club he joined as an eight-year old. Ward-Prowse, 28, completed the full journey through the Saints' youth system to becoming a first-team regular and then captain in June 2020. In April, he played his 400th match for Southampton but could not help his boyhood club avoid the drop zone. A dead-ball specialist, the England midfielder sits just one free-kick behind David Beckham's Premier League record of 18. The end of an era. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/8/9/916f96f6-3fb4-4919-8dfe-006cb3e64c31.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/17169/production/_130696549_bbc-sport-index-imagery-2-split-images-gradient-93981163-37f3-4ef7-8b9f-1d5655af02af.png

West Ham transfer news: Cole Palmer of Manchester City is Hammers loan target..By Simon Stone, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/61C7/production/_130713052_palmerpa.jpg Cole Palmer made his debut for Manchester City in 2020 and scored his first goal for the club in the Community Shield last weekWest Ham are interested in signing Manchester City forward Cole Palmer on loan. Palmer has impressed with City after manager Pep Guardiola opted against sending the 21-year-old out on loan last season. He came on as a substitute and scored a stunning goal against Arsenal in the Community Shield on Sunday. Palmer was part of the England Under-21 side that won this summer's European Championships. The development comes after City spoke to West Ham about the availability of midfielder Lucas Paqueta, who only joined them from Lyon 12 months ago. The Hammers have had bids accepted for Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse and Manchester United defender Harry Maguire. West Ham believe the England duo are both keen to join them, although the Ward-Prowse deal is likely to be done before Maguire. They are also hoping to finalise Mexico midfielder Edson Alvarez's £35m move from Ajax. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/1483F/production/_130713048_palmer.jpg

Edson Alvarez signs five-year deal with West Ham.. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/8/10/2cb63177-6341-4bcc-9e1d-8523f18834ef.jpgEdson Alvarez is West Ham's first signing of the summer. He was a central figure in the Mexico side that won the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States over the summer and is viewed as a replacement for Declan Rice. After starting his career in his native Mexico with Club America, Alvarez moved to Ajax in 2019 and he helped the Dutch outfit to win two Eredivisie titles. Alvarez scored four goals in 44 appearances across all competitions in 2022-23 and has been capped 69 times by Mexico. “I am very happy and very proud to be here,” said Alvarez. “Being here in London and seeing London Stadium, it’s amazing. I can’t wait to play here in front of the West Ham fans. “It’s a hugely sentimental moment for me in my career. To join a club like a West Ham is a dream for me and my family."

Edson Alvarez: West Ham sign Ajax & Mexico midfielder for about £35m..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/686B/production/_130713762_edsonalvarez.jpg Edson Alvarez was part of the Mexico side that won the 2023 Gold Cup by beating Panama in the finalWest Ham have signed Mexico midfielder Edson Alvarez from Ajax in a deal thought to be worth about £35m. The 25-year-old was a central figure in the Mexico side that won the Concacaf Gold Cup in the United States this summer. Alvarez is the club's first signing of the summer following the departure of Declan Rice to Arsenal for £105m. "It's a hugely sentimental moment for me in my career - it is a dream for me and my family," Alvarez said. "The Premier League is a special league, the best league in the world and I think my style will suit it. "I now have a responsibility to West Ham and the West Ham family and I will give absolutely everything for the shirt." Manager David Moyes added: "We're really pleased to add Edson to our squad. The midfield area was one we were especially keen to strengthen this summer - and Edson will complement the other options we have in that department. "He's an experienced international player, who has enjoyed great success for both club and country during his career to date." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/1A4B/production/_130713760_alvarez.jpg

West Ham: David Moyes says the club is closing on James Ward-Prowse and Harry Maguire deals..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/107E5/production/_130775576_gettyimages-1335717699.jpg Manchester United's Harry Maguire and Southampton's James Ward-Prowse played against each other in the Premier League last seasonDavid Moyes says West Ham are closing on England duo James Ward-Prowse and Harry Maguire, but insists Manchester City's bid for Lucas Paqueta is "not anywhere near" the club's valuation. The Hammers boss says midfielder Ward-Prowse is having a medical, while Manchester United have accepted a £30m bid for defender Maguire. City made an initial approach for Paqueta on Wednesday. West Ham have already signed Mexico and Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez for £35m. "We've had an offer from Manchester City [for Paqueta] but at the moment it's not anywhere near meeting our valuation," Moyes said on Friday. "James Ward-Prowse is having a medical just now. We've agreed a fee but it's not right I speak about him as he's not yet our player. "We've had a bid accepted from Manchester United [for Maguire], but while he's not our player I'm not in a position to discuss him really." Meanwhile, Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag said England defender Maguire could still feature for his side in their opening Premier League game with Wolves on Monday, despite accepting the Hammers' offer. Asked if Maguire was available for selection on Monday, Ten Hag said: "Of course." Alvarez became the first summer arrival at the London Stadium on Thursday, almost a month after Declan Rice's to Arsenal departure was confirmed, but Moyes defended his side's transfer policy. "You need a number [of players] you can work with and a balance of players in each position, and all those things come into it when you try to sign them," Moyes said. "I just walked through the corridor and looked at all the pictures of us winning a European trophy - it was incredible what we did. "We're going into this season with a great deal of positivity. We have a great feeling and we want to keep it."

Man Utd transfer news: Key Harry Maguire issue sees West Ham move for alternative signing in stunning development..by James Holland.ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/171D7/production/_130397649_gettyimages-1474624507.jpgThe transfer of Harry Maguire from Manchester United to West Ham United is still not finalised due to a big problem, and this has resulted in David Moyes’ side eyeing up Bundesliga star Odilon Kossounou instead, as per a report. Maguire has looked set to leave Man Utd ever since manager Erik ten Hag stripped him of the captaincy and appointed Bruno Fernandes in the leadership role. The England international has been linked with several Premier League clubs, including Tottenham and Aston Villa, but a switch to West Ham has appeared most likely in recent weeks. On Wednesday, Man Utd took a big step towards offloading Maguire by agreeing a deal with West Ham for him. The Irons will pay Man Utd £30m for the centre-back, should the deal reach completion. There have even been suggestions West Ham could make Maguire their new captain, in what would be an intriguing twist. It was previously thought that West Ham had agreed to pay Maguire £100,000 a week, while he will receive a £6m fee from Man Utd when departing Old Trafford. But according to an update from The Sun, the defender is not as close to signing for West Ham as fans will have been hoping. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/11F5B/production/_130436537_gettyimages-1474620556.jpgWest Ham’s push to sign Maguire is ‘stalling’ as they are failing to agree on personal terms with him. It seems Maguire wants to earn more than £100k a week in East London, and potentially closer to the £190k he takes home every seven days at Man Utd. As a result of this problem, West Ham technical director Tim Steidten has rushed to find an alternative signing to Maguire. And the report claims he has landed on Bayer Leverkusen’s Kossounou. One of the main reasons for this particular pursuit is that Steidten worked at Leverkusen between 2019 and 2023. He therefore knows a lot about the club and is aware of Kossounou’s talent. Should Maguire end up rejecting West Ham, due to his wage demands, then the Irons will make a firm bid for Kossounou instead. Steidten is ready to pay Leverkusen £30m for the Ivorian, the same fee that has been agreed for Maguire’s transfer. And Steidten’s good relationship with Leverkusen officials should help the move to go through more smoothly than that of Maguire’s. Ten Hag will be frustrated if Maguire’s switch to West Ham fails to reach completion. While he has publicly labelled the 30-year-old an important player for Man Utd, it is clear that he is searching for a replacement in his squad. Man Utd are interested in Bayern star Benjamin Pavard and Jean-Clair Todibo of Nice. They have also identified Tottenham target Edmond Tapsoba as a backup option, should they miss out on Pavard and Todibo. However, if Man Utd sign one of Pavard or Todibo and fail to axe Maguire, then their wage bill will be overstretched.

The England midfielder joins the Hammers on a four-year deal worth around £30m. The midfielder joined Southampton aged eight and made 410 appearances for his boyhood club. A move away from St Mary's was always expected following their relegation from the Premier League last season. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/8/14/64869d4e-e6c4-489c-9bb8-41d917a96045.jpgJames Ward-Prowse is West Ham's second summer signing after Mexico midfielder Edson Alvarez. The England international said: “I’m buzzing to be here at West Ham United. It’s great to be here and I’m looking forward to getting going. “From the outside looking in, this is a club that has been on the rise for a number of years now and coming off the success in the Uefa Europa Conference League last year, you can feel there is real momentum around this club. It’s great to be a part of it and I can’t wait to play my role in the games to come. “When I think about my game, it is based on hard work, graft, and giving 100 %. West Ham United has always been a club that has epitomises that. You can feel that from the fans and you can see it in the players who are here and the lads that have come through the academy too. “I feel as though I will fit straight in and I can promise I will give my all for this football club in my time here.” ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/720/cpsprodpb/bdca/live/fa52bbc0-36c4-11ee-bde6-7ffba94c56ae.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/8/14/13b95a62-44ed-45b0-9487-8d8d20cc3ca6.jpg“I’m delighted to bring a player of James’ quality and experience to West Ham United," West Ham manager David Moyes said. “He's performed to a very high level in the Premier League over the last decade, constantly producing good numbers season after season. “His leadership qualities are obviously another huge plus for us – he’ll be a big voice for us, someone who drives the team on from the middle of the pitch. “We’re excited to get him up and running, for what will be another busy season on both the domestic and European front.”

'Legacy as Saints legend well and truly cemented'..ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/8/14/b43c7f24-d632-48d0-a399-cca90b7a2073.jpgJames Ward-Prowse made his Southampton debut aged 16 in a League Cup defeat at Crystal Palace in October 2011. He was 17 when Saints handed him a first taste of Premier League action, starting in a 3-2 loss against Manchester City in August 2012. The England international scored 55 goals during his time at St Mary's. Southampton said in a statement: "His commitment to Southampton FC over two decades, his professionalism both on and off the pitch, and his support in the community means he leaves with his legacy as a Saints legend well and truly cemented. "While the club is naturally disappointed to see him leave, we understand his desire to continue pursuing his career both in the Premier League and on the European and international stages, and are satisfied that we have now received appropriate compensation for a player of his quality and importance, which can further support the club’s own plans in the remainder of the transfer window. "We are also grateful to the professionalism that he has shown throughout the entire process. "Everyone at Southampton FC would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to James for what he has given to the club during his long time with us. We wish him every success in the future."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/125BF/production/_130799157_harrymaguiregossip.pngWest Ham are considering pulling out of a deal for Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire, 30, because of the amount of time it is taking to complete. If a move for Maguire is abandoned Hammers boss David Moyes will turn his interest to Germany defender Jonathan Tah, 27, and Ivory Coast centre-back Odilon Kossounou, 22, who are both at Bayer Leverkusen. West Ham want to replace Brazilian Lucas Paqueta, 25, in midfield with Ajax's Ghana international Mohammed Kudus, 23, if an agreement can be reached over a fee with Manchester City for the former. Jesse Lingard, 30, could be set to rejoin West Ham, and despite training with Inter Miami would prefer to play in the Premier League.

Lucas Paqueta: West Ham midfielder under investigation over potential betting breaches..By Alex Howell, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/5A5E/production/_130843132_gettyimages-1609814568.jpg Paqueta has scored five goals in 42 West Ham appearances since arriving last yearLucas Paqueta is being investigated by the Football Association for potential betting rule breaches, sources have confirmed to the BBC. The West Ham midfielder, 25, has been linked with a move to Manchester City. On Friday, Paqueta was omitted from Brazil's squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers "for him to sort out his problems". Sky Sports reported Paqueta as saying he had not placed any bets himself and was shocked by the reports. The investigation, which is also said to involve world governing body Fifa, is believed to centre around bets placed in Brazil on yellow cards awarded against Paqueta. Speaking on Friday, Brazil's interim coach Fernando Diniz said Paqueta had been left out of his squad for qualifiers against Bolivia and Peru next month. "Paqueta was on the list, he's a player I like a lot. It's a time for him to resolve these issues," Diniz told reporters. "People need time to sort these issues out. He's a player I love, I have the best impressions of him." BBC Sport has approached the FA and West Ham for comment. Paqueta joined the Hammers from Lyon for £36.5m last summer and was instrumental in the club winning the Europa Conference League. He made 28 Premier League appearances last season, scoring four goals and assisting three. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/F69E/production/_130843136_gettyimages-1610042839-1.jpg

West Ham United 3 Chelsea 1
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/C2FB/production/_130851994_nayefaguerd.jpg Defender Nayef Aguerd has scored three times in his last 10 Premier League matches for West HamWest Ham United claimed a rousing London derby win against big-spending Chelsea despite playing almost 30 minutes with 10 men. The Hammers were 2-1 ahead when defender Nayef Aguerd, who opened the scoring with an early header, was sent off in the 67th minute for his second bookable offence. But Chelsea could not force an equaliser with their numerical advantage and then conceded a late third through Lucas Paqueta's penalty in the fifth minute of added time. Teenager Carney Chukwuemeka scored his first goal for the Blues to make it 1-1 but Enzo Fernandez wasted a chance to put them ahead when his penalty was saved by Alphonse Areola. Michail Antonio fired West Ham back in front with a powerful angled strike in the 53rd minute, before the hosts were reduced to 10 men. However, Mauricio Pochettino's side were unable to capitalise on Aguerd's dismissal to force a second leveller despite a second-half debut for Moises Caicedo, who has joined from Brighton in a deal that could become a British record. The Ecuador midfielder, who signed for an initial £100m fee which could rise to £115m, had a chance to make it 2-2 but shot over from the edge of the penalty area. Caicedo, looking rusty after two months without a game, then conceded a penalty for a foul on Hammers left-back Emerson and Paqueta made no mistake from the spot to seal West Ham's victory. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/13DB7/production/_130853318_westham.jpgThis was West Ham's 1st game at London Stadium since they won the Europa Conference League, their 1st major honour since 1980, with the trophy on display before the match

Lucas Paqueta: West Ham boss David Moyes had no doubts about midfielder..By Alex Howell, BBC Sport at London Stadium.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/E3E9/production/_130854385_gettyimages-1611514485.jpg Lucas Paqueta has been a target for Manchester City this summerWest Ham United manager David Moyes says there was "never any doubt" about playing Brazil midfielder Lucas Paqueta in the 3-1 win against Chelsea. The 25-year-old is being investigated by the Football Association for potential betting rule breaches and as a result his mooted move to Manchester City has reportedly been put on hold. But he was lively against Chelsea and scored a late penalty to seal the win. "He's a solid and tough character, so no problems," said Moyes. "I thought 65,000 people stood to their feet and applauded him the whole game because of what he did. "He went the whole way, played as well as anybody, showed character, never hid away from the ball ever. His performance was very, very good, especially in the second half.
