ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/33A0/production/_131561231_shutterstock_editorial_14166583ew.jpg Nigel Pearson's contract with Bristol City was due to expire next summerBristol City have sacked manager Nigel Pearson after two and a half years in charge, with the Robins 15th in the Championship. The club have lost five of their past seven matches with Saturday's 2-0 defeat by Cardiff Pearson's final game. The 60-year-old was appointed in February 2021, initially on a short-term deal, and was the second-longest serving manager in the Championship. His contract was due to expire at the end of this season. "This was a difficult decision to make as we recognise and appreciate how much Nigel has done for the club over the past two and a half years on and off the pitch," said club chairman Jon Lansdown. "Nigel is highly respected by the staff and players and has been very supportive of the academy structure and our women's team. "We all wanted Nigel to achieve our ambition to be promoted but, with our recent results, feel that now is the time to make a change to give the club the best possible chance of success." Assistant manager Curtis Fleming will take on the role of interim head coach, while a new appointment is made. Former Leicester and Watford manager Pearson signed a three-year deal until 2024, but after the loss to Coventry last weekend he said that he may be "fighting for his job" with the contract soon to expire. "My position has not been secure, which irritates me," Pearson told BBC Radio Bristol. The team finished 14th in the Championship last season and have won five of their 14 league matches during this campaign, with three draws and six defeats. Pearson is the sixth manager to leave a club in the second tier this season, with Gareth Ainsworth sacked by QPR on Saturday. First-team coach Jason Euell has also left Bristol City, along with head of medical performance Dave Rennie. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/5AB0/production/_131561232_shutterstock_editorial_14168457da.jpgAnalysis - Richard Hoskin, BBC Radio Bristol sport editorThere's been a lot of 'noise' in recent days about the future of Nigel Pearson, ever since he expressed his "irritation" that the club hadn't opened contract negotiations about a new deal. In his time at Ashton Gate, Pearson has trimmed the squad and wage bill - losing Antoine Semenyo and Alex Scott to Bournemouth, with the significant transfer fees received for these players not appearing to be reinvested in the squad. He also gave youngsters like Sam Bell and Tommy Conway opportunities and they're now among key first-team players. In recent weeks he's been walking with crutches, as he waited for more tests to diagnose a "neurological situation". Against Cardiff on Saturday, the Robins were hindered by an ever-growing injury list. It's a big, dare I say controversial decision by the Lansdown family - with a lot of City supporters backing Pearson.

Marti Cifuentes: QPR appoint Hammarby boss as new head coach..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/BEB1/production/_131571884_gettyimages-1557934466.jpg Marti Cifuentes is set to arrive in London on TuesdayQueens Park Rangers have appointed Hammarby boss Marti Cifuentes as their new head coach. The 41-year-old replaces Gareth Ainsworth who was sacked on Saturday after a sixth straight Championship loss left them 23rd in the table. Spaniard Cifuentes was in charge of the Swedish top-flight side for two years. "Marti is an exciting appointment and we look forward to seeing the impact he can have," QPR chief executive Lee Hoos told the club website. "Having a succession plan in place is a necessary part of football, irrespective of how the team are performing. "Marti is someone we have been aware of so we are really pleased to have been able to secure his services." Cifuentes has spent almost a decade in management and coached in the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. He arrives at a side with two wins in 14 league games and they are six points behind Huddersfield Town who are just outside the drop zone. His first game in charge will be at fellow strugglers Rotherham United on Saturday.

Stephen Clemence: Gillingham name former Birmingham & Tottenham midfielder as boss
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/17A6E/production/_131587869_gettyimages-1242309983.jpg Stephen Clemence (left) has worked under Steve Bruce at several clubs but will now lead a side for the first timeGillingham have named former Birmingham and Tottenham midfielder Stephen Clemence as their head coach. The 45-year-old, son of late England keeper Ray, has been part of Steve Bruce's coaching staff at Sunderland, Hull, Aston Villa, Sheffield Wednesday, Newcastle and West Brom. Former Sunderland coach - and most recently Rochdale manager - Robbie Stockdale will be Clemence's assistant. Neil Harris was sacked last month with Gills eighth in League Two. Clemence will take training for the first time on Thursday, before his first game in charge at non-league Hereford in the FA Cup first round on Saturday. After coming through the ranks at Tottenham, he made 91 appearances across six years at White Hart Lane before a move to Bruce's Birmingham and latterly Leicester. His most recent first-team coaching role came under Bruce at West Brom, departing The Hawthorns along with Bruce in October 2022 after only eight months. Former Gillingham defender Bruce had himself had been linked with the role, but Clemence will now take his first managerial position. Gills' American majority owner Brad Galinson told BBC South East Today this week that the new boss at Priestfield needed to meet four key pieces of criteria - putting the players first, having a personality to fit in, playing brave, front-footed and entertaining football, and working hard. Kenny Jackett, Gillingham's director of football, had led the search for Harris' successor while former chairman Paul Scally, who remains on the board, was involved in the process.

Nigel Adkins: Tranmere Rovers appoint interim manager on two-and-a-half-year deal..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/4843/production/_131599481_shutterstock_editorial_14168471bb.jpg Tranmere have lost their last four league matches under Nigel AdkinsTranmere Rovers have appointed interim boss Nigel Adkins their permanent manager on a two-and-a-half-year deal. The 58-year-old was made technical director in the summer before taking over first-team affairs in September after Ian Dawes was sacked. The League Two strugglers have won two of his nine league games in charge. "It's an honour to take the manager's role at a club I previously played for, and which is my home-town club," he told the club website. "I have no illusions that we have work to do given our very poor start to the season, however I would not have accepted this role on a permanent basis if I was not confident that we can put it right. "The infrastructure and support that is in place at Tranmere Rovers is top quality." Adkins, who played in goal for Rovers between 1983 and 1986, has had spells in charge of Scunthorpe, Southampton, Reading, Sheffield United, Hull City and Charlton. He twice led the Iron to promotion from League One and guided Southampton from the third tier to the Premier League. Tranmere are second-bottom in League Two, three points adrift of safety after four successive defeats. They visit League One Stevenage in the FA Cup first round on Saturday.

Bradford City: Danny Cowley rejects offer to take over League Two club..By Ian Dennis, BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1462C/production/_131600538_shutterstock_editorial_13690956bn.jpg Danny Cowley left Portsmouth in JanuaryBradford City will not be appointing Danny Cowley as their new manager after he changed his mind about taking over the League Two club. The former Lincoln and Portsmouth boss had agreed terms at the start of the week but had a change of heart because of family reasons. Midfielder Kevin McDonald had a spell as player-caretaker after Mark Hughes' exit but has now relinquished the role. Mark Trueman will take caretaker charge for Saturday's FA Cup tie with Wycombe. The Bantams are 16th in the fourth tier, six points off the play-off places. Cowley, who had a spell in charge of Bradford's West Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield in 2020-21, led Lincoln from the National League to League One in his three years in charge of the Imps. Bradford finished sixth in League Two last season in what proved to be Hughes' only full season with the club. They were beaten by Carlisle in the play-off semi-finals and the ex-Wales, Manchester City and Stoke boss was sacked in October after a poor start to the new campaign.

Graham Alexander: Bradford City appoint former MK Dons boss as new manager..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/13CC4/production/_131629018_shutterstock_editorial_14138264aj.jpg Graham Alexander's spell with MK Dons lasted just 16 games of the 2023-24 League Two seasonLeague Two side Bradford City have appointed former MK Dons head coach Graham Alexander as their manager on a contract until the summer of 2026. The 52-year-old had been out of work for only three weeks after being sacked by the Dons on 16th October. He replaces ex-Wales boss Mark Hughes, who left Bradford early last month. Alexander previously managed Fleetwood, Scunthorpe, Salford and Scottish club Motherwell, who he guided to a Europa Conference League place in 2021-22. "It is really good to be here. I am excited about the role, the potential of the team and club," he told the club website. "Joining a club, you have to look at the short-term improvements you can make, but also look at the potential of what you can do. Here, for me, that scope is endless." Hughes had led Bradford to the League Two play-offs last season but was dismissed having won just three out of 11 games this term with the club in 18th position in the table. Kevin McDonald took over on a temporary player-caretaker basis and won his first three games before losing the next two. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/EEA4/production/_131629016_shutterstock_editorial_14149592bb.jpgFormer Lincoln City and Huddersfield Town boss Danny Cowley had been in the frame to replace Hughes but ruled himself out of taking the job because of family reasons. Having been appointed by MK Dons in May following their relegation last season, Alexander's tenure at the club lasted just 16 games into the 2023-24 campaign. MK Dons made 11 signings during the summer transfer window and Alexander steered them to four wins from their first five league games as they topped the League Two table. A sharp drop off followed, culminating in his short stay with the club coming to an end last month. He moves to the University of Bradford Stadium with former Bury boss Chris Lucketti as his assistant and the Bantams in 16th in division.

Liam Manning: Bristol City appoint Oxford United boss as head coach..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/52C9/production/_131639112_shutterstock_editorial_14157499bw.jpg After a career in non-league football Liam Manning became an academy coach at West Ham and New York City before joining Belgian side Lommel as manager in 2020Bristol City have appointed Oxford United boss Liam Manning as head coach. The 38-year-old succeeds Nigel Pearson, who was sacked last month with the club 15th in the Championship after a run of five losses in his last seven games. Manning leaves Oxford second in League One and three points behind leaders Portsmouth after 15 matches, having spent just eight months in charge of the club. He has previously managed Milton Keynes Dons and Belgian side Lommel. "This is a terrific opportunity and one that I'm really looking forward to," Manning, who has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract at Ashton Gate, told the Bristol City website. "If you look at the vision of the club and where they want to get to and how they want to get there I think there is really good fit and alignment with my journey and where I want to get to." Manning, who will be assisted at the Robins by his number two at Oxford, Chris Hogg, has impressed since succeeding Karl Robinson as U's boss - the club were 18th in League One and three points off the relegation places when he took over in March. He kept Oxford up last season thanks to two wins in their final three matches, before masterminding an excellent start of this season which has seen the U's lose just two league games since the opening day of the season. "Liam is a great fit for the club and the style of play we want", Bristol City Chairman Jon Lansdown said. "He has a very detailed approach to coaching, improving players and getting the best out of them as his record at MK Dons and Oxford United shows. "As soon as we made the change Liam was our first choice and we are grateful to Oxford United for the extremely professional way they have approached the departure of someone who was doing a fantastic job for them."

Nuno Espirito Santo: Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ittihad sack former Spurs boss..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/7E08/production/_131646223_gettyimages-1773315260.jpg Nuno had 16 months at Al-Ittihad, winning the Saudi Super Cup and Pro LeagueSaudi Pro League champions Al-Ittihad have sacked former Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo following a run of poor results. They have won six of 12 league games this season and suffered a 2-0 defeat by Air Force Club of Iraq in the Asian Champions League on Monday. Nuno, 49, took over at Al-Ittihad in July 2022 after being sacked by Tottenham eight months earlier. Assistant coach Hassan Khalifa will take interim charge of the team. Portuguese Nuno enjoyed a successful spell at Wolves from 2017 to 2021 but lasted just four months at Spurs before being replaced by Antonio Conte after losing five of 10 Premier League matches. The former Porto coach guided Jeddah-based Al-Ittihad to the Saudi title last season, but there were reports of a difficult relationship with former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, who joined the club in June this year as part of the influx of stars into the league. In a statement on X, Al-Ittihad said: "The club has announced the end of its contract with Portuguese coach Nuno Santo. "This decision comes after a comprehensive technical evaluation of the past phase during which he was in charge of coaching the first football team." Former Liverpool midfielder Fabinho and ex-Chelsea and Leicester player N'Golo Kante also play for Al-Ittihad, who are sixth in the Saudi Pro League and will next play Abha on Friday. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/11A48/production/_131646227_gettyimages-1610622058.jpg

His final match was their 5-0 defeat at Watford on Saturday, which left the Millers four points from safety. Taylor had been with the Yorkshire club for 13 months, after leaving Exeter City to replace Paul Warne at the New York Stadium. He kept Rotherham up last season, but he departs after just two wins from their 16 league games this season. Taylor, 41, becomes the seventh Championship manager to leave his job so far this campaign. In a statement released by the club chairman Tony Stewart said the search for a new manager was already under way, with the club's next match at home to Leeds United on 24th November. Stewart said: "It was felt by myself and the board that we had to act now by making a managerial change in order to give ourselves the best possible chance of retaining our Championship status this season." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/125B6/production/_131709157_fe227555cdc06d848c5f9c8d988bd266c6622505.jpg

Lincoln City have appointed Leeds United Under-21 boss Michael Skubala as their head coach..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/0371/production/_131718800_shutterstock_editorial_13759624ch.jpgSkubala led Leeds' first team for three games last season after Jesse Marsch was sacked, but this is his first managerial role in senior football. The 41-year-old, who has worked in various coaching jobs spanning over 20 years, replaces Mark Kennedy, who left the club last month. The Imps are ninth in League One, four points adrift of the play-offs. Skubala's first game in charge will be away to Stevenage on Saturday at 3pm. Imps chief executive Liam Scully said that results were not the reason for Kennedy leaving the club and under interim head coach Tom Shaw, Lincoln collected eight points from five games. Before joining Leeds in the summer of 2022 Skubala had worked in a variety of roles, including as England Under-18 coach and head coach of the England futsal team. Lincoln chairman Clive Nates described Skubala as a "progressive appointment" who matches the Imps' ethos on developing players and a style of play. "We are confident Michael will develop our talented squad and evolve our identity in the direction set by the club, while delivering winning football," he told the club's website. "Together our ambition is to challenge at the top of League One."

The 38-year-old was born in Oxford and played for the U's youth sides before joining the coaching staff aged 18. He progressed to first-team coach under Chris Wilder a decade ago before coaching overseas, most recently at Indian Super League side Mumbai City. Craig Short has been in interim charge since Liam Manning left the club to join Bristol City last week. Saturday's 3-2 win at Leyton Orient left Oxford second in League One, one point behind leaders Portsmouth after 16 matches. After last leaving the Kassam Stadium in 2014, Buckingham joined A-League side Wellington Phoenix as assistant manager before taking over as manager in 2017 aged 31. A short spell coaching Stoke City's under-23 side followed in 2017 but he returned to New Zealand the following year to coach the national side's under-20s and under-23s, and act as assistant manager for the senior team. In 2020 he was appointed assistant manager of Melbourne City, helping them land the double in his first season, before moving to another City Group club, Mumbai, in October 2021, winning the Indian Super League for the first time in February and leading the side in the Asian Champions League. Matthew Etherington: Colchester United confirm interim boss as head coach..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/147C0/production/_131740938_shutterstock_editorial_14161508bt.jpg Matthew Etherington began his playing career at Peterborough before joining Tottenham, followed by a loan spell at Bradford and permanent moves to West Ham & StokeColchester United have confirmed interim boss Matthew Etherington as their new head coach. The 42-year-old had been a youth coach at the club but was put in charge after the sacking of Ben Garner last month. The former Stoke City and West Ham winger had a 32-day spell as Crawley Town boss last year before resigning. Saturday's 1-1 draw with Sutton United meant Colchester have taken 10 points out of 12 since Garner's departure and are now 16th in League Two. "I needed to think about taking the job, some people might not believe that, but that's just me being honest," Etherington told BBC Essex Sport. "It was definitely a temporary basis when Ben left. We had a conversation at the start of this week and with the way things have gone I was delighted to take it. "I'm a realist, I know what football is all about, I've been in the game since I was 15 years old. There'll be bumps in the road ahead but I'm sure there'll be plenty of positives as well. "There are the ingredients here for this club to be successful. That's genuinely how I feel in my gut." Etherington was made interim boss on 23rd October but, after overseeing a 3-2 win at Grimsby in his first match, he was unable to sit in the dugout for the following game against Accrington after Crawley claimed he was still under contract to them. He was reinstated as interim boss at the end of last month, after U's owner Robbie Cowling carried out a "thorough review" of the contractual situation with Crawley - and Etherington said it was now "all sorted". Having taken the Colchester Under-21s job in the summer, he believed a return to a head coach role would be "a year or two down the line". But Etherington's first game as permanent boss will be a trip to League Two leaders Stockport County on Saturday. "There'll be different questions asked this weekend, and next weekend, but it's down to us as a staff, as a team, together collectively, to figure out those problems," he said. Details of Etherington's contract have not been disclosed, but Colchester sporting director Dmitri Halajko said: "Matty has had a good response from the players and his league points return has been excellent as interim head coach. "He will now have the opportunity on a full-time basis and will have the full support at everybody at the club as we look to continue climbing up the league table."

Ged Brannan: Morecambe appoint caretaker boss as manager on 18-month deal..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/12BE4/production/_131827767_shutterstock_editorial_14228825t.jpg Ged Brannan took co-caretaker charge of Morecambe with John McMahon during their 6-0 defeat by Wrexham on SaturdayMorecambe have appointed caretaker Ged Brannan as their manager on an 18-month deal following the departure of former boss Derek Adams. Adams left the club earlier in November to rejoin Scottish side Ross County for his third spell in charge. Brannan, alongside John McMahon, took temporary charge during Saturday's 6-0 League Two thrashing by Wrexham. "I'm absolutely delighted to be in charge of a club like Morecambe," Brannan, 51, told the club website. "The fans are great, I've been here before as a player and I always loved it - I'm absolutely buzzing, I'm just so glad the board have stuck by me and given me this opportunity. "If they [the fans] are anything like Saturday at Wrexham, that's all I can ask. Come down on Tuesday, sing your hearts out and get behind the team because you're an extra player for us, you've been brilliant so keep it going." Adams, 48, had two spells in charge of Morecambe, first leading them to promotion from League Two through the play-offs in 2020-21, then again from early 2022 when he initially kept the club up in League One. Although relegation to League Two followed last season, the Scot had stabilised the club upon their return to the fourth tier, with the Shrimps just outside the play-off places upon his departure. Brannan, whose playing career included spells at Tranmere, Manchester City and Wigan, made more than 60 appearances for Morecambe and returned to the club in a youth coaching role after his retirement following a spell as manager of Accrington Stanley Under-23s. He takes charge of Morecambe with the club 12th in the table, two points off the play-off places, following Saturday's defeat, which was their third in a row in the league.

Mark Bonner: Cambridge United sack head coach after almost four years in charge..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/15544/production/_131846378_shutterstock_editorial_13882731h.jpg Mark Bonner's departure leaves Bolton's Ian Evatt as the only manager in League One appointed as far back as 2020Cambridge United have sacked head coach Mark Bonner following Tuesday's 3-0 home defeat by Lincoln City. The U's only escaped relegation on the final day of last season and are currently 18th in League One. Cambridge-born Bonner, 38, was appointed in January 2020, initially as interim boss, and agreed a new "long-term" contract in September. The U's are the seventh third-tier team to change managers this season - and 21st in the English Football League. Owner Paul Barry said Bonner would go down as "one of the most important people in the history of Cambridge United". "All of us - owners, board, staff, players and fans - know how lucky we have been to have him and how hard this decision has been," Barry added. "Cambridge United has made huge strides on and off the pitch over the last five years and Mark has been instrumental in building our strong foundations for the future, creating special memories and moments for all of us along the way - most notably promotion during lockdown, Newcastle away in the FA Cup and the great escape last season. "He has done it through his leadership and energy, his talent as a coach, his natural communication and empathy, and his desire to push the club forward on and off the pitch as someone born and brought up in Cambridge, who genuinely cares about our city and its communities. "But in football, sometimes you do have to make decisions you believe are right for the long-term future of the club - difficult though they can sometimes be." Barry Corr and former Crawley boss Kevin Betsy have been put in charge of the first team on an interim basis. The defeat by Lincoln was Cambridge's third in a row - a run which began with a 5-0 thrashing at Peterborough in the Cambridgeshire derby. They have only won one of their past 13 league matches. "We're really disappointed because it's been a bad few days for us," Bonner told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire after the defeat by the Imps. The Black Cats have won just two of their past nine league games and have slipped to ninth, having made the play-offs last season. Mowbray, 60, took over at Sunderland in August last year after Alex Neil left the club to join Stoke City. "This was a difficult decision to make," sporting director Kristjaan Speakman told the club website. "But we remain loyal to our ambition and our strategy, and felt that now was the right moment to take this step. "We are now focused on identifying the right candidate and we will continue to support our coaching team and players throughout the interim period."

Duff departs after a run of one win in eight matches and with Swansea sitting 18th in the table. The 45-year-old had endured a difficult spell as Swansea boss, with the club struggling to find consistency this season. Martin Paterson has also left, with his fellow assistant head coach Alan Sheehan becoming caretaker boss. Sheehan will start his temporary tenure on Saturday, as Swansea go in search of a first win in five league games at second-bottom Rotherham United. Duff's brief reign began with a seven-game winless streak in the league - including a miserable derby defeat at Cardiff City - before a run of four straight wins lifted his side into the top half of the table. But they have since taken six points from a possible 24, a worrying run which has cost Duff his job.

Alex Neil: Stoke City sack manager after 16 months in charge..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/D1C0/production/_131969635_alexneil.jpg Alex Neil has left Stoke after 16 months and with the club 20th in the ChampionshipStoke City have sacked Alex Neil as manager following Saturday's home defeat by Championship bottom club Sheffield Wednesday. The 42-year-old Scot spent 16 months in charge in the Potteries after leaving fellow Championship side Sunderland to join Stoke in August 2022. He led Stoke to 16th last season, a fall from the previous two campaigns, when they had each time finished 14th. But they have struggled this term and currently sit 20th in the table. Despite an expensive 18-man summer overhaul, the Potters have won just six of their 20 league matches. Assistant Martin Canning has also left the club and first-team coach Paul Gallagher will take charge of the team for Tuesday's home game against Swansea. Chairman John Coates told the club website: "Alex is a man of absolute integrity who has given his all for Stoke City and we would like to thank him for his hard work during his time with the club. "We are grateful for the building blocks he has helped put in place in bringing together a group of players in whom we have a huge amount of faith regarding their ability to turn things around this season, and who can help us achieve longer-term success. "However, with the way the results have been so far, we have made the difficult decision to seek a new direction for the team at this time. "Nothing matters to me more than the success of our club and we are now working towards the appointment of Alex's successor."
