Hannah Dingley: Forest Green Rovers name first female boss of a men's professional football side..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/13B3A/production/_130289608_shutterstock_editorial_12605575cv.jpgForest Green Rovers have named Hannah Dingley as their new caretaker boss, making her the first woman to manage a professional men's team in English football. The League Two side sacked Duncan Ferguson on Tuesday after just six months in charge. Forest Green announced Dingley, the club's academy head, would be put in caretaker charge of the first team. Her first match in charge will be a friendly at Melksham Town on Wednesday. The 39-year-old said: "I'm really excited for this next step of my career. Pre-season has just begun, and the full season kicks off very soon. "It's an exciting time in football. I am grateful for the opportunity to step up and lead such a progressive and forward-thinking club." She first joined the club in 2019 to take charge of the academy and remains the only woman to manage a men's English Football League academy. Dingley also initiated the club's girls academy which launched in 2021. She has a Uefa Pro Licence and previously worked at Burton Albion "Hannah was the natural choice for us to be first team interim head coach - she's done a fantastic job leading our academy and is well aligned with the values of the club," club chairman Dale Vince said "It's perhaps telling for the men's game that in making this appointment on merit, we'll break new ground - and Hannah will be the first female head coach in English [men's] football." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/1E04/production/_129148670_shutterstock_editorial_12605575l.jpg.................................................................................................................................................................... Duncan Ferguson: Forest Green Rovers boss leaves after less than six months..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/14D00/production/_130284258_shutterstock_editorial_13891691n.jpgDuncan Ferguson has left his role as Forest Green Rovers head coach after less than six months in charge. The former Everton assistant manager and player was appointed in January with the club bottom of League One. They were subsequently relegated to the fourth tier in April, with Ferguson overseeing one win in 18 matches. The 51-year-old had signed a five-year contract with the Gloucestershire side and had talked about his and the club's long-term plans after their relegation. "It's been a privilege to work with Dunc these last few months and this was a very difficult decision to make," said Forest Green owner Dale Vince. "I'm grateful to Dunc for joining us in such difficult circumstances and for all of his hard work at the club. "But I feel this is overall the right decision for everyone and I wish Dunc well in his next coaching role. We are parting as friends. You can't ask for much more than that." Ferguson scored 73 goals for Everton as a player in two spells between 1994 and 2006 and was also capped seven times by Scotland. He joined the Toffees coaching staff in 2014 and twice acted as caretaker manager before leaving the club last summer to pursue his first managerial position. While Forest Green returned straight to League Two after one season in the third tier, Ferguson had been talking about rebuilding for next season - with three players brought in so far this summer transfer window. Newly appointed chief executive, Marcus Reynolds, also spoke about the club needing "stability and progress" going forward. Hannah Dingley: Forest Green Rovers head of academy on journey as female boss in men's game..By Ian Hunt, BBC Sport Wales.
i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article30392739.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/1_Forest-Green-Rovers-Transfer-News-17-Jul-2019.jpgLong before she made history and headlines by taking charge of an English Football League side, Hannah Dingley knew she wanted to be a football coach - even if she was not allowed to play the game herself at secondary school. Dingley started coaching a men's team at the age of 17 in the small seaside village of Llansteffan near Carmarthen in south west Wales. That - and a gritty work experience placement at Swansea City's old Vetch Field ground - inspired a coaching journey that led to her in July 2023 becoming the first woman to manage a professional men's team in England. "It's been quite a journey from that little village in south Wales where I grew up to where I am now," says Dingley, 40. The watershed moment came in the summer, when Dingley was appointed caretaker boss at League Two side Forest Green Rovers following the sacking of former Everton and Scotland striker Duncan Ferguson. Cynics claimed it was just a public relations stunt by Dale Vince - the club's owner and green energy entrepreneur - to put Dingley in charge for a few weeks during pre-season. But Dingley, who reverted to her usual job as Forest Green's head of academy when David Horseman was appointed manager, shudders at those suggestions. "It was a little bit frustrating [to hear that]. My argument is how many academy managers or under-23 coaches take on interim roles at football clubs across the country?" she said. "It happens regularly, and if they don't get the job they go back to their original role and carry on as normal. "It's more insulting, I suppose, that there was an expectation I'd been given the job because I was female. "I wouldn't want to be given a job purely because I'm female. I'd always want to be given a job on merit, because I deserve the position." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/702A/production/_131941782_shutterstock_editorial_14012885q.jpg Hannah Dingley puts the Forest Green Rovers players through their paces on the training groundDingley was not prepared for the huge media interest, as journalists and camera crews descended on otherwise low-key pre-season matches to capture history in the making. "It was a bit of a whirlwind. The media attention wasn't something I was expecting or skilled at dealing with," she said. "I even had security - something I've never had before. They were like, 'Let's get you in, keep your head down, don't speak to anybody.' All very different to what I'm used to doing. "A good experience, though, because if that's something I'd like to do in the future then that [media attention] is something that comes with the role." Born in St Albans, Dingley moved to Carmarthenshire when she was four as her parents wanted to be closer to where they grew up. Life in Llansteffan would act as a launchpad for her coaching career, even though she had to overcome old-fashioned mentalities at her school. "It was idyllic growing up there - tiny little village, seafront, beach on the doorstep, castle on the hill," she says. "I was inspired to play football there, starting playing with the boys on the fields. I was usually the defender because they all wanted to be the strikers. But I was the one who went into football [as a profession] and my brother's a musician. "We only had 30 children in the whole primary school. There weren't enough girls to have a girls' football team. And then it was a bit of a shock to the system going to secondary school because we were told girls don't play football - it's netball or hockey. "But when I turned 16 I started playing for Carmarthen Town and got the bug from there. At 17 and 18 I started coaching the men's village team for a bit of experience. "I also did work experience at Swansea City when they were still at the Vetch Field. Typical work experience things, spent a bit of time with the community trust, stuffing letters into envelopes, making teas and trying to carry them up and down the steps of the terraces without spilling them. "They had a gym that was in the concourse and I remember watching some of the first-team players train there. Then you walk in on a matchday and your hair stands on end with all the noise on the terraces. That really helped inspire me to want to get into football." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/E55A/production/_131941785_gettyimages-1517681946.jpgA group of female Forest Green fans held up this placard before Hannah Dingley's first game in charge
Dingley took a football studies programme at Coleg Sir Gar in Llanelli before studying sport sciences at Loughborough University, where she honed her leadership skills. She coached several men's non-league sides - including Gresley Rovers, Shepshed Dynamo and Leicester Nirvana - and had a spell as head of coaching at Burton Albion before settling in the Cotswolds at Forest Green. Dingley skirts around the question of whether she was disappointed she didn't get the top job full-time at the New Lawn. But it has whetted her appetite to do it again and she says it is only a matter of time before more female coaches get the chance to manage in the men's game. "Yes, definitely. There are lots of very competent female coaches and managers who would be more than capable of taking on a men's team," she said. "The point I'd make is we always want it to be a valid appointment. Not tokenism. "Maybe there's this old-fashioned viewpoint about [what it might be like] going into a men's changing room. "But players are professional athletes who will take on information and buy into things. I never had any issues with them. "So I don't think there should be a barrier in terms of thinking how players would take it. They're paid to do a job and apply the game plan the coach gives them. "I wanted to get that job because I deserved it. It was a great experience that put me in good stead for something that might happen in the future. "At the minute I'm really happy with what I'm doing - it's a great club to work at and I've got a lot of support here. "If an opportunity came up, you never know what might happen. But I'm not out searching for the next job."

Leam Richardson: Rotherham United appoint former Wigan Athletic boss..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/81D2/production/_131943233_gettyimages-1244511800.jpg Leam Richardson won League One with Wigan but was dismissed during the 2022-23 seasonRotherham have appointed ex-Wigan boss Leam Richardson as their new head coach on a two-and-a-half-year deal. The 44-year-old takes over from Matt Taylor who was sacked last month. The Millers are second-bottom in the Championship with 13 points from 20 games and are eight points adrift of safety. Richardson led the Latics to the League One title, ahead of Rotherham, in 2021-22 but was sacked in November of that year after a slow start to the season. "I've never turned a challenge down that I feel I can't meet head on and give my all," he told BBC Radio Sheffield. "We can't guarantee results, but we can guarantee a certain level of performance and level of work ethic. "When my tenure starts to when it ends, I'd like to think we'll have evolved and I'll have left the club in a better place than I found it." Rotherham said the decision to appoint Richardson followed a "long and meticulous interview process" featuring "high-calibre candidates" and was driven by "Leam's credentials and vision for the project". "I think I'm very similar to what Rotherham stands for," Richardson added. "It's about a strong work ethic and a dynamic football team. "We'll evolve and do it methodically, a process that suits the football club and myself." Taylor took over as manager at the New York Stadium in October 2022 after long-serving boss Paul Warne left for League One Derby. The former Exeter boss kept them in the Championship last season but he was sacked in November after just two wins from their first 16 league games - only to be appointed by Bristol Rovers at the start of the month. Richardson will need to improve Rotherham's wretched away form if they are to avoid a return to the third tier. The Millers have not won a game on their travels since beating Sheffield United at Bramall Lane 13 months ago.

Burton Albion have parted company with manager Dino Maamria, after their fifth loss in six games, their loss to Stevenage at the weekend was his final game in charge, Gary Mills steps up as temporary manager,.... Missed this one: Dino Maamria: Burton Albion sack manager after Stevenage loss..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/2770/production/_131969001_gettyimages-1793580526.jpg Dino Maamria was appointed Burton boss in September 2022Burton Albion have sacked manager Dino Maamria after the Brewers lost for the fifth time in a six-game winless run in League One. Saturday's 2-1 loss against high-flying Stevenage was their fourth straight league defeat. It leaves them just two places and four points above the relegation zone after 20 matches. The defeat ended a week in which Burton beat Wrexham to advance to the last 16 of the EFL Trophy. Maamria's dismissal "with immediate effect" was announced in a 13-word club statement attributed to chairman Ben Robinson. After the loss against Stevenage, 49-year-old Maamria told BBC Radio Derby that he would be meeting with Robinson and spoke openly about how vulnerable his position was. "If it's my last game today, I want to tell everybody thank you very much - I loved my time here," he said. "The fans were obviously not happy at the end and I totally understand their frustration. It's a winning business and I haven't won enough games. "What I have to say is that I work relentlessly hard with very limited resources and I've done my absolute best." Maamria was in charge for 15 months at the Pirelli Stadium, having stepped up from assistant to replace Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink when Burton were bottom of the third tier last season. It was on his insistence during a meeting with Robinson that the ex-Stevenage and Oldham boss was handed the job on a permanent basis when taking over from Dutchman Hasselbaink. He repaid the faith by overseeing a huge turnaround and despite spending just three days outside the drop zone before February, he managed to keep Burton up with three games to spare. That strong finish to their last campaign, however, was followed by a disastrous start to the season, as they collected just two points from the first 21 that were on offer. A seven-game unbeaten league run, that included five wins, saw the east Staffordshire side comfortably move themselves up to mid-table before their latest dip in form cost Maamria his job.

Michael Beale: Sunderland appoint former Rangers boss as head coach..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/180E8/production/_132063589_shutterstock_editorial_14128725aa.jpg Michael Beale spent just under a year as manager of Rangers before leaving the club in OctoberChampionship club Sunderland have appointed former Rangers boss Michael Beale as their new head coach. The 43-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal at the Stadium of Light. Beale had a brief spell in the Championship with QPR last season before leaving in November 2022 to join the Scottish Premiership giants. He won 31 of his 43 games in charge of Rangers but was sacked on 1 October after three defeats in their first seven league matches of the campaign. Beale, who has replaced Tony Mowbray as boss, takes over with Sunderland seventh in the Championship, three points outside the play-off spots, following a 1-0 defeat at Bristol City. That loss came after successive wins under caretaker Mike Dodds, who will stay on as assistant head coach. "We have monitored Michael's career for some time and we are delighted to have reached an agreement for him to become our new head coach," sporting director Kristjaan Speakman told the club website. "He has an excellent and well-founded reputation for developing players and he is an outstanding progressive coach, who is aligned with our playing identity and naturally fits within our structure alongside Mike Dodds and the wider team." Mowbray led Sunderland to a sixth-place finish last season but was sacked in early December after a run of two wins in nine league matches saw them slip to ninth in the table. He had spent 15 months in charge of the Black Cats after replacing Alex Neil following the former Norwich and Preston manager's move to Stoke in August 2022.

Sutton United: Manager Matt Gray sacked by League Two strugglers..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/119FE/production/_123609127_matt_gray_sutton_rex.jpgThe Sutton United Board of Directors has this morning released the following statement. ''The Board of Directors at Sutton United has made the extremely difficult decision to part company with manager Matt Gray. Matt will forever have a large place in Sutton United's history as the manager who took us in to the Football League for the first time in our 123-year existence, and to a Wembley final and within a point of the play-offs in our first season at this level. However this season's results have been disappointing and our league position, as we approach the half way mark of the season, led us to decide with great reluctance that a change is necessary. We would like to express our massive gratitude to Matt for the success he has given us during his four and a half years in charge, and for his endless dedication, commitment and hard work in that time, all done with an attitude, passion and energy that made him hugely popular in every area of the club. He will always be welcome at Sutton, and we offer him every good wish for his future career.

Nottingham Forest sack Steve Cooper after poor Premier League run..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/3CB3/production/_132093551_cooper.jpg Steve Cooper was England under-17 manager when they won the World Cup in 2017Nottingham Forest have confirmed the sacking of manager Steve Cooper, with former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo in talks to replace him. Cooper's exit comes with Forest having lost five of their past six games. The 44-year-old led Forest to promotion to the Premier League in 2022, ending a 23-year absence from the top flight. "His achievement in guiding Forest back will undoubtedly remain an iconic moment in the club's history," said owner Evangelos Marinakis. "We thank Steve for his dedication and commitment during his time with us, as well as the incredible connection he forged with our supporters and the city of Nottingham. "Steve will always remain a friend of the club and will forever be welcome at the City Ground. We wish him well in his future endeavours." Cooper, who continued to be a popular figure with the club's fans, was told of the decision on Tuesday. Forest, who are 17th in the Premier League, have won once in their past 13 top-flight games, taking eight points in that period. They have picked up one point from their past six matches and are five points ahead of third-from-bottom Luton, who have a match in hand. Cooper's final game at the helm was a 2-0 home defeat by Tottenham last Friday.

Steven Schumacher: Stoke City name Plymouth Argyle boss as head coach..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/14288/production/_132086528_shutterstock_editorial_14239589bo.jpg Steven Schumacher's Plymouth beat Stoke earlier this month, in what proved to be Alex Neil's final away game in chargeChampionship strugglers Stoke City have appointed Plymouth Argyle boss Steven Schumacher as their head coach. The 39-year-old leaves the Pilgrims - who are three points above the Potters in the second tier - to replace Alex Neil on a three-and-a-half-year deal. Schumacher spent two years in charge at Argyle, leading them to the League One title with 101 points last season. Stoke, without a win in eight, are three points above the drop zone and on to their sixth manager in six years. Plymouth assistant manager Mark Hughes, first-team coach Peter Cavanagh and goalkeeping coach Darren Behcet have also left the club to join Schumacher. Schumacher, who initially joined Argyle as assistant to Ryan Lowe and was promoted in December 2021 when Lowe left for Preston, said he was "attracted" to Stoke by "its history and everything it represents". "The values that resonate with me for a Stoke City team are bravery and hard work, coupled with a desire to play attacking football and be a team our supporters can connect with," he told Stoke's website. "We have the players to do that and, if we can get back to a point where the Bet365 Stadium is thought of as a tough venue to visit, we can really get it rocking again." Neil was sacked on 10th December after 16 months in charge, having led the club to a 16th-placed finish in 2022-23. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/F468/production/_132086526_shutterstock_editorial_14255794aj.jpgSchumacher follows the same route as Tony Pulis, Stoke's most successful manager of the past 50 years, who left Home Park to return to the Potteries for a second spell in charge in 2006, culminating to the club's return to the top flight in 2008. A reunion with the Pilgrims will come late in the season, with Stoke hosting the Devon side in late April. Stoke chairman John Coates says the Potters feel they have "one of the most exciting young coaches in the country" in Schumacher, while Plymouth have said the promotion and title-winning boss "will go down as an Argyle great". "We are naturally sorry to lose a manager of Steven's potential, but he has decided to take a new role that he sees as the next step in his career," Plymouth chairman Simon Hallett told the club website. "I would like to thank Steven for his hard work, dedication, and success during his time with Argyle and I'm sorry that he won't be with us as we work to deliver our new mission." Plymouth's director of football Neil Dewsnip and first-team coach Kevin Nancekivell have been placed in interim charge of the club as they search for Schumacher's replacement.

Find that quite ridiculous as he has been fighting all season with this team to get them to safety but it hasn't worked, imo Forest gave hime ample time to turn things around, his time has run,new ideas needed to refresh the team

David Horseman: Forest Green Rovers name Southampton B team boss as new head coach..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/16224/production/_130406609_shutterstock_editorial_12525235b.jpg Prior to joining Southampton, David Horseman had spells on the staff at Bristol City and WatfordForest Green Rovers have named Southampton's B team boss David Horseman as their new head coach. He takes over from Hannah Dingley, the first woman to manage a professional men's team in England, who has been in interim charge since 5th July. Last season, Horseman was also Saints first-team coach under Ruben Selles. "I'm grateful to Hannah for holding the fort for the club while we went through the complete recruitment process," said owner/chairman Dale Vince. "Although she did not get the top job this time, it's undoubtedly been a valuable experience and a big step on her career path." Dingley, who has a Uefa Pro Licence and initiated the club's girls academy which launched in 2021, took charge of the club's first pre-season fixture against non-league Melksham Town and a trip to Ireland. She will also oversee this week's friendlies against Coventry City and Everton Under-21s, with Horseman and assistant Louis Carey taking up their roles on Thursday. Previous Rovers boss Duncan Ferguson left the club the day before Dingley was appointed as caretaker, following the team's relegation to League Two. Vince said Horseman had stood out from over 100 applicants to succeed Ferguson. "We're delighted to have David join as our head coach, he brings a wealth of experience and a modern approach to the game which matches our own," he said. Horseman enjoyed success last season as Southampton won the Premier League 2 Division Two title, beating Leeds United Under-21s to top spot on goal difference. "Louis and I have been lucky to be involved for a long time in professional football and study from some elite coaches which we will bring some ideas with us," he said. "The supporters can look forward to seeing a team with energy and aggression and one that they can be proud of." Contract details for Horseman and Carey - who is Bristol City's record appearances maker - have not been disclosed by the club. [b Sacked! Adding to the above post by Lostinspace - Troy Deeney: Forest Green Rovers make ex-Watford captain head coach after David Horseman departs.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/22CE/production/_132101980_gettyimages-1795257641.jpg Forest Green Rovers is Troy Deeney's first full-time managerial roleForest Green Rovers have appointed ex-Watford captain Troy Deeney as head coach following the departure of David Horseman by mutual consent. Deeney, 35, has been working in a player-coach capacity since joining the League Two club in the summer. Horseman, 39, spent only five months in charge and has left following the team's FA Cup exit to Blackpool. Rovers have won only four league matches this season and sit 23rd in the table, five points from safety. Forest Green owner Dale Vince said he needed to "act decisively to improve our performances and league position". "Troy came to us to begin his career in coaching and take the next step of his career - this is happening sooner than expected but he's built strong relationships already with our staff, squad and fans - and is well placed for the challenge," said Vince. "We'll strengthen our squad in the coming transfer window as well, to give ourselves the best chance of first securing our place in League Two before looking upward once more, toward League One and beyond." Deeney spent 11 years as a striker with Watford after moving to Vicarage Road from Walsall in 2010, and went on to score 140 goals in 419 appearances as he twice helped the Hornets win promotion to the Premier League and led them to the 2019 FA Cup final. He joined Forest Green after leaving Championship side Birmingham City in the summer and has scored four goals in 18 appearances this season while also working on the coaching staff at The New Lawn. He becomes the club's fourth boss in 19 months since the departure of Rob Edwards in May 2022, after Ian Burchnall, Duncan Ferguson and Horseman. His first game in charge will be Friday's visit of Gillingham. "One thing I can assure everyone is that we will work our very hardest to bring this wonderful club back to success," said Deeney. "This is an exciting new role with many challenges that I'll embrace, and there's a lot of work for us to do, which has already started."

The 40-year-old led the Ammies to the League Two play-offs last season having succeeded Gary Bowyer in in May 2022. However, Wood had been unable to steer Salford to similar success this term, and Boxing Day's 5-1 home loss to Tranmere proved his last in post. Assistant coach Simon Wiles will take charge of Friday's game with Grimsby.

He won just six of his 22 games in charge, losing 10, and leaves the club second-from-bottom of League One. Assistant manager Darren Way and first-team coach Phil Jevons have also left Highbury with Johnson. P.S - JB back to Fleetwood maybe..?

"I'm inheriting what I think is a strong squad which is more than capable of getting the results needed to climb the table. "Fleetwood is a hard-working, honest, and passionate town and the football club must reflect that - the players have to be proud to pull the shirt on and represent what the club and the town stands for. "It's now important we see togetherness from the players, staff and crucially the supporters to help turn results around - we can't wait to get started." Adam, who started his playing career with Rangers, was capped 26 times by his country after making his international debut in 2007. He moved to Blackpool in 2009 and then to Liverpool two years later, where he scored two goals in 37 appearances. Adam's brother, Grant is a goalkeeper who is currently playing for fellow Dundee-based side Lochee United. He has four other siblings: brothers Gary, Connor and Grant, and sister Nicola. Adam grew up supporting Dundee and On 21st September 2022 Adam officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 36. Adding to the above post by lostinspace...Wayne Rooney: Birmingham City sack manager after just 15 games in charge..By Ged Scott, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/10B6/production/_132187240_shutterstock_editorial_14279546j.jpg Wayne Rooney only picked up 10 points from his 15 matches in charge of Birmingham CityBirmingham City have sacked manager Wayne Rooney after just 83 days in charge of the Championship club. The 38-year-old was appointed on 11 October following the controversial decision to dismiss John Eustace, with Blues sixth in the table. Since then they have slipped to 20th, Monday's 3-0 loss at Leeds having been the ninth defeat of his 15-game tenure. "Football is a results business and I recognise they've not been at the level I wanted them to be," Rooney said. Professional development coach Steve Spooner will take interim charge for Birmingham, who have also parted company with one of Rooney's backroom team, former Wolves and Wales midfielder Carl Robinson. Rooney said he now plans to take a break from the game."I would like to thank (co-owners) Tom Wagner and Tom Brady and (chief executive) Garry Cook for the opportunity to manage Birmingham City and the support they all gave me during my short period with the club," he said. "However, time is the most precious commodity a manager requires and I do not believe 13 weeks was sufficient to oversee the changes that were needed. "Personally, it will take me some time to get over this setback. "I have been involved in professional football, as either a player or manager, since I was 16. Now, I plan to take some time with my family as I prepare for the next opportunity in my journey as a manager."

Matthew Etherington: Colchester United sack head coach..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/EFA4/production/_132184316_gettyimages-1878457896.jpg Matthew Etherington previously had a short spell in charge of Crawley Town in 2022Colchester United have sacked head coach Matthew Etherington after an eighth loss in nine matches. The U's are only one place and five points above the League Two relegation places after losing 1-0 to Gillingham. Etherington was a youth coach at the club before taking over on an interim basis following predecessor Ben Garner's sacking on 21 October. The 42-year-old took over permanently on 16 November but won just one league game after that. The downturn followed a good start to his time as head coach when he won three of his first four matches. "It's not easy, I'm not going to stand here and lie to you and say I'm fine," Etherington told BBC Radio Essex after what proved to be his final match. "It's tough and the players are finding it tough as well with the results we've had recently, so it's a difficult moment for everybody and all you can do, until you're told otherwise, is keep going." Colchester have not announced who will take charge of the side ahead of a trip to Swindon Town on Saturday. Home supporters made their feelings about the club's recent results known to Etherington in no uncertain terms at full-time against Gillingham. "They're entitled to their opinion, they pay their money to come and watch, so it's part and parcel of being in this role," said the former Stoke City and West Ham winger, who is 2024's first managerial casualty. "I get it, and the results haven't been good enough lately, so it is what it is. Etherington, who had a 32-day spell as Crawley Town boss in 2022 before resigning, added: "I believe in working a certain way, I believe in my principles as a person and I'll keep being me." To compound Colchester's problems, leading scorer Joe Taylor has been recalled from his loan spell by parent club Luton Town after netting 12 times in 27 appearances and, according to Etherington, could now join a League One club.
