The Northern Irishman used to work at Old Trafford as an assistant coach under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. United have 21-year-old Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite, Boca Juniors' Aaron Anselmino, 18, and 19-year-old Mikayil Faye of Barcelona on their defensive shortlist this summer. Jadon Sancho, who is on loan at Borussia Dortmund, may get another chance at United if the club appoint Southampton's Jason Wilcox as their director of football. Wilcox worked with the forward at Manchester City's academy. Real Madrid would like to sign 18-year-old Lille centre-back Leny Yoro - who has also been linked with Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea - this summer after the Frenchman told his club he wants a new challenge.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/5229/live/97206ae0-eb71-11ee-8bf3-195418ba9285.jpgWe asked for your thoughts on Thursday's Premier League game between Chelsea and Manchester United.
Here are some of your responses:
Manchester United fans
Chieloka: The only way to address this is silence. I think this game will define the season. Horrible at first, then a glimmer of hope, only to be dashed at the last minute. Ewan: Another tactical roll of the dice by Ten Hag, another defeat. He has no concept of how to manage and control a Premier League game and he is addicted to high risk and luck! It is absurd. We could learn to shut up shop but the manager does not want to. We cannot thrive on crazy, lottery football every week, so Ten Hag has got to go for me! Stan: The players showed character coming from 2-0 down, but to throw the lead away so late on suggests a lack of character. It is not the first time the players have done this and it seems beyond Ten Hag to right these wrongs. Veering from spectacle to disaster has been the story of our season. George: Unbelievably unprofessional. And, not for the first time. It is not as if opposition teams are doing anything brilliant, it is just bread and butter stuff. Something has gone badly wrong with this group of players and it is Ten Hag's job to sort it, and he hasn't. Shiv: This is not sustainable and the season is a write off. We need a massive clear out along with the restructuring happening with the new ownership. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/7a/Manchester_United_FC_crest.svg/200px-Manchester_United_FC_crest.svg.png

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/87bf/live/4c8abe90-f2ce-11ee-b039-2de270079d09.jpgManager Erik ten Hag says Manchester United must "recover very quickly" and put the disappointment of Thursday's last-gasp loss at Chelsea behind them as they prepare to host Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday. United have won on both occasions they have faced Liverpool at Old Trafford since Ten Hag took charge in the summer of 2022, including a pulsating FA Cup quarter-final last month. Asked how United plan to do so again, Ten Hag said: "We will see on Sunday. First I have to deal with this [defeat at Chelsea], but we can't deal with this for long. We have to recover very quickly and we have to turn this around. "From Friday onwards we will be in a positive mood. We will be looking forward. We have to take energy, but from anger you can take a lot of energy and that is how we have to do it." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/ddec/live/d496b6c0-f334-11ee-a9f7-4d961743aa47.jpgThursday's defeat left sixth-placed United nine points behind fifth-placed Tottenham and 11 behind Aston Villa in fourth position. "This week, we have dropped five points in stoppage time and it is very expensive," said Ten Hag when asked if he still thought his team could qualify for the Champions League. "The points are getting very expensive because the games are running out. We have to catch up and we are now many points behind. "It will be difficult but we will keep fighting. Our team has character - we saw an example on Thursday as well. "They are resilient and I am sure they will be there to be in the fight against Liverpool." Ten Hag has also spoken about tragedy chanting, following incidents at the FA Cup quarter-final between the two clubs in March. Writing in Sunday's programme, the Dutchman said: "It is part of my duty to remind every supporter fortunate enough to be at this game that it must be enjoyed in the proper way, and not used as an excuse for abusing rival fans about Hillsborough, Heysel or any other historic tragedies. "This is one of the truly great rivalries in world sport, for so many of the right reasons, and it is our responsibility to keep it that way." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/3441/live/fc5c4d20-f31e-11ee-8369-47dc4454b972.jpg

Bologna and Netherlands forward Joshua Zirkzee has been targeted by Manchester United and Liverpool, but he has told his agent he would prefer a move to AC Milan. Arsenal are set to rival Manchester United for the signing of Barcelona's 19-year-old Senegalese centre-back Mikayil Faye. Meanwhile, Manchester United have offered a new deal to 16-year-old English winger Bendito Mantato, with several top clubs interested in the teenager. United want to recruit a chief business officer to report to their new incoming chief executive Omar Berrada. Premier League clubs are pushing to scrap points deductions in favour of a new luxury tax fine system.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/09ba/live/ebc0fb50-f517-11ee-ac31-6f6c5a2a7433.jpgManchester United boss Erik ten Hag has been speaking to BBC Match of the Day following the draw: "Very mixed emotions. On one side, I am disappointed that we have dropped seven points in one week, after being in winning positions, but we have to blame ourselves for making stupid mistakes. "On the other side, I am very proud. You see how we are improving and the potential of this squad is amazing. I am proud. "In decisive areas, we were losing battles, especially with young players, we were not confident to win them [duels]. "We encouraged [them] in the second half to do better and they stepped up." On having the belief to win duels: "It is two things. One thing is physical, after Thursday [which was] a big intense game and then to return from London dealing with the frustration. On the other side, it is the belief that you can win such duels." On their current league position: "I don't know, We will keep fighting. We have to do the same and learn from the moments. "Brentford was our worst performance. We didn't deserve to win there." On 19-year-old Willy Kambwala: "He has been training a while with us and progressing well. "The next generation need to step in and he is doing brilliant. The challenge for him is doing it consistently. "Great opportunity for him. We have other options, like bringing Casemiro in at centre-half, but today he deserved it and he showed it on the pitch." Erik Ten Hag praises young defender - Man Utd 2-2 Liverpoolichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/4/8/9ed452fa-45e5-4342-a8e0-49189a8e75db.jpgManchester United had key defenders missing from their match against Liverpool after a number of them sustained injuries. Names missing on the team sheet included Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans which saw 19-year-old Willy Kambwala start alongside Harry Maguire. It was just his second senior start. "When old soldiers die, new ones have to come in," said manager Erik ten Hag. "Willy is training with us for a long time. He started at West Ham [in December] and did very good and his progress is amazing. "We didn't have any doubts. We were convinced he could do the job. It's another signal and message for the future of Manchester United."

Here are some of your responses:
United fans
Josh: On the face of it, the result is good, but it only papers over the cracks Erik ten Hag must sort out. We are far too easy to play against and we only had the chance to get back into the game because of their wastefulness, individual brilliance from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo, and the Old Trafford atmosphere pulling them through. I do think Sir Jim Ratcliffe has seen enough and will make a change. Tom: United were very wasteful again and were repeatedly giving the ball away in their own half. Basic, wayward passing at this level isn't good enough. Only the eradication of this fundamental problem will improve the team's current poor performances and lessen the attacking pressure. Martin: We are still playing injured players. This gets Manchester United nowhere in the long run, as these players are out for a longer period. Why play Wan-Bissaka at left-back when we know Dalot plays well there. Fernandes needs to play further back in midfield and allow Mainoo to play in the number 10. This would increase our goal chances hugely. Andy: We are chaotic. There is no structure, no composure and seemingly no plan. Teams are getting 20 to 30 shots a game against us, which is appalling. Our only rays of hope in a terrible season have been Mainoo and Garnacho. We were lucky to get a point. I don't know what Ten Hag is doing - I wonder if he does? upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/7a/Manchester_United_FC_crest.svg/200px-Manchester_United_FC_crest.svg.png

Erik ten Hag: Man Utd manager wants new striker in summer transfer window..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/14F67/production/_133136858_gettyimages-1887160511.jpg Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag signed striker Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta for £72m in August 2023The Dutchman felt his goalscoring options for this season "should have been enough". But with seven games to play in the Premier League, United have just 45 goals, the fewest of the top 10 teams. Asked at a news conference how vital it will be to bring a proven scorer to Old Trafford this summer, Ten Hag said: "I think it would help." Ideally, he wants more than one strong challenger for every role on the team. Ten Hag added: "You need more options. You need double positioning in every position. "Some positions we didn't have the choices this season - the striker position, the left-back position - and that has a negative impact on the results." United, who travel to face Bournemouth on Saturday, signed Denmark forward Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta for £72m on a five-year deal last August. The 21-year-old is the club's top scorer in his debut campaign with 13 goals in 34 appearances in all competitions. England striker Marcus Rashford has netted eight times in 38 games while France international Anthony Martial, out since groin surgery in January, has scored twice in 19 appearances. "In this plan we constructed we should have had enough goals," Ten Hag said. "You count on goals from Rashford - last season he scored 30. You count on goals from Martial - in my first season he played very well, and also in very important games he had a high impact on our performances. "And then bringing a goalscorer like Rasmus Hojlund in, it should have been enough goals."

Manchester United have set their sights on AC Milan and Portugal forward Rafael Leao, but the 24-year-old is valued at 145m euros (£124m) by the Italian club. Former Chelsea and Brighton boss Graham Potter is in line to take over from Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag - who reportedly expects to be sacked this summer - following a meeting with the club's minority stakeholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Brentford expect England striker Ivan Toney to leave the club in the summer, but the Bees will demand £50m, with Manchester United among several Premier League clubs tracking the 28-year-old. Raphael Varane will not to be offered a new contract on the same money by United and the defender is expected to leave the club when his current deal expires in June. Manchester United and Newcastle United have reportedly "initiated talks" with 29-year-old Juventus and France midfielder Adrien Rabiot, who could be available on a free transfer this summer. Meanwhile, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has held face-to-face talks with Newcastle co-owner Amanda Staveley in an attempt to reach an agreement on sporting director Dan Ashworth's move to Old Trafford. Manchester United and Tottenham have approached Fulham's English centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo in an attempt to reach a pre-contract agreement with the 26-year-old. United's Aaron Wan-Bissaka is a £13m target for Inter Milan with the 26-year-old England defender out of contract in the summer of 2025. Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has admitted England defender Harry Maguire, 31, wants to play more regularly, with interest from West Ham. Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in the frame to be appointed as the next Republic of Ireland manager.

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has been ruled out "for the next few weeks" with a muscle injury...ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/83cb/live/d67514e0-f830-11ee-b040-0f5000e44a02.jpgThe 30-year-old picked up the issue in the Red Devils' 4-3 defeat by Chelsea last Thursday. In a statement the club said Varane is "aiming to be back before the end of the season in May". United also confirmed that centre-back Jonny Evans will also miss the side's match against Bournemouth on Saturday with a "shorter-term muscle issue". It leaves Erik ten Hag with a selection headache in defence with Harry Maguire the only fit senior player in that position following injuries to Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof. The United boss played teenager Willy Kambwala alongside Maguire in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool and the 19-year-old could be set to keep his place for the trip to Vitality stadium.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We know we have to win. We want to battle, to compete for the top positions. You see the game, we struggled first half, [Harry] Maguire was struggling but he overcame because we needed him to. "The second half was much better, the good thing is we fought back twice from a losing position. The team spirit is good. By the end it could've been more composed and calm and we could've played more chances out. "The opponent was struggling because they gave so much energy in the first half and there were so many gaps but we didn't benefit from it." On Bruno Fernandes: "Scoring twice, very creative, it's true he gives a lot of energy to the team. He is acting as a captain, bringing the energy and we are very pleased with this. "We are all disappointed but he expresses that feeling. We have to win our games and we have dropped too many unnecessary points in the last few games." On Bournemouth's penalty being overturned: "It was not a penalty, definitely not. We conceded - in the last four games - three penalties, and all of them were debatable. The one we won today was also debatable." Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag speaking to Sky Sports: "We have a team that is resilient, has character, we want to win.Twice we fought back from losing positions. "We get in losing positions and it is totally unneccessary. Three times we lose the ball easily and in areas you should not lose balls and we were not always well organised. There were some gaps that the opposition benefitted from, especially down the right side, and with that we should do better." On going in at half time just one goal down: "First of all it was us losing balls in the wrong positions. The first goal we were actually well set up but we lose the ball in a bad area and it was a goal. There were two or three more occasions where we should have dealt better with the ball. "Then down the right side they were finding ways to hurt us and there were jobs to be done but it was not always done. Then you get problems. Go with your opponent, that is your job. One part is collaboration and the other is discipline. "Second half was better. We took more responsibility and we closed up the sides. That also has to do with in the middle Harry Maguire was struggling in the first half, and you see we do't have many options at centre half any more. But in the second half his leadership and guidance helped us to be more closed." More from Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag speaking to Sky Sports on conceding so many shots at goal: "We have used the same back line twice and these players gave everything, their maximum. But some of them are young, inexperienced and to do it match after match in the tough Premier League is difficult. It is hard but they have to deal with it, that is the demand of Manchester United. "You see with every opponent there is that desire to beat us. Today they went to their limits, every match they went to their limits. We have to show resistance, control it and dominate it." On the team talk at half time: "Two things. Stay in formation in possession and don't get erratic. And number two do your job defensively." On ambitions of top four: "This is not enough, we know that. When you come into the final stage of the season this is not enough. The truth is we did not deserve more today. We have to do better, control the game, score goals and not give as many chances away." On if fans need to be patient: "It is up to them but it is the truth. At this moment with all the problems we have we play to our levels. We can play very good and to our levels when everyone is on top form but we have to do it for the whole 90 minutes."

Here are some of your answers:
Manchester United fans
Nigel: Headless chickens springs to mind. Ten Hag clearly lost the plot, with substitutions continue to be strange. Mount left on the bench until it's too late. Ten Hag was desperate to buy him in the summer but now he is fit he doesn't want to play him. Casemiro is now hopeless but still gets to start, crazy. Sack Ten Hag now. Paul: Pretty poor once again. Not a team at all. Reliant on individual moments to get anything. Look like a bunch of blokes who just met in the pub this morning and decided to play football in afternoon. Only Bruno can hold his head up. Rashford and Casemiro awful. Should have lost 5-1 but somehow scraped a draw. How we are still seventh is beyond me. Sylvia: Passing was poor… easily frequently intercepted by Bournemouth players. Always hesitant when attacking, giving time for the opposition to get into defensive positions. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/7a/Manchester_United_FC_crest.svg/200px-Manchester_United_FC_crest.svg.png

'Marcus Rashford set to stay at Man Utd'..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/4/15/4e7cdab8-8764-4896-acd6-4d88b6def564.jpgMarcus Rashford's future is at Old Trafford — after Paris Saint- Germain made it clear they have NO interest in signing he struggling frontman. Rashford, 26, has been linked with a PSG move as a replacement for Kylian Mbappe, who is destined for a Real Madrid switch. The Manchester United academy product, 26, only signed a £325,000-a-week agreement until 2028 last summer. And sources have told SunSport that PSG believe the talk was only used to improve the terms of his contract offer. A source said: “PSG have never been interested in signing Marcus. “And given his struggles on and off the pitch this season, they have given it no consideration at all. He will not be moving to PSG. “He might benefit from the noise around a possible transfer going away so he can concentrate on reigniting his United career.” The England ace played all of Saturday's 2-2 Premier League draw at Bournemouth. But he once more struggled to make a real impact - let alone match his sizzling form of last season. Two equalisers from Bruno Fernandes, including a controversial penalty, rescued the Red Devils.
