‘Probably Ronaldo’ – Man Utd owner Ratcliffe explains Rooney snub after Sir Alex admission..by Jason Soutar.
i2-prod.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/article32229246.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/3_gettyimages-2025372147.jpgSir Jim Ratcliffe believes Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player in the history of Manchester United. Ronaldo had two spells at Old Trafford, becoming a world-class player under Sir Alex Ferguson between 2003 and 2009 before returning in August 2021. The second stint ended in tears, with the Portuguese superstar ripping the club and everyone associated with it a new one. United’s new minority owner Ratcliffe has said that the Al Nassr striker is the greatest player in the club’s history. “Probably Ronaldo, I guess,” Ratcliffe said when asked the question on the Geraint Thomas Cycling Club. “I remember Bobby Charlton a bit, and he was obviously the legend of Manchester United. “George Best, I suppose, was probably the most naturally gifted player I’ve ever seen play football. But I once asked Alex Ferguson who the best player he had ever coached was, and he said Ronaldo. “It was the first time I met (Ferguson), actually, at a League Managers Association dinner.” England manager Gareth Southgate is reportedly Sir Jim Ratcliffe's No 1 choice to replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United this summer. Ratcliffe is increasingly confident of tempting Southgate to Old Trafford after his INEOS sports team canvassed United legends, according to the Daily Star. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/3/20/adf78cf5-e028-4108-80c4-834ab7f7f4f3.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/3/20/d24ae87d-e3cd-4cd3-a840-4b6172433423.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/3/20/fb11e6b4-f0a5-48dd-811f-5b28b732280b.jpg

Get Involved - Is Southgate right for Man Utd?..and your views on Kobbie Mainoo's England call up. What do you think of Gareth Southate and the Manchester United job? Would he a good fit? Or does Erik ten Hag deserve a chance at Old Trafford?Stu in Swindon: Absolutely no chance Gareth Southgate would go to Manchester United. Why would he? He’s doing a brilliant job with England. Dave: Gareth Southgate's not got a great record at club level, but the international scene is where he's had some success - although with all the tools at his disposal, he's still not managed to win anything. I'm an Erik ten Hag needs to stay supporter, and the constant swapping of managers needs to stop. If we had this constant media speculation at the start of Sir Alex Ferguson's reign, he would have been out by 1988.. Anon: Gareth Southgate's done an incredible job with the youngsters of England but to have that kind of pressure day in day out? I don't think Southgate could cope with the pressures of Manchester United. Paul: This isn't a dig at Kobbie Mainoo, but what's he done to deserve a call up to the national team? Look at the bare bones of the situation, and he's played a handful of senior games, which helped his team get to sixth place and a semi-final of a cup. Nothing else. In my opinion, it's a smack in the face to player like James Ward-Prowse, for example, putting in consistent performance season after season without a look in. There's no doubt that if Mainoo played for anyone outside the so-called top six with the same attributes, he wouldn't be considered at this time. The same goes with Ward-Prowse. He'd be selected every game if he played for the top six. The pathway to England for players outside the bigger teams is very limited and shouldn't be forced to get a move to those teams for international recognition. This is a perfect example into why there's such a disconnection between a lot of the fans and the national team. Anon: Gareth Southgate would be mad to go to Manchester United. He's already vilified in his current role despite doing a pretty good job, but at least that is concentrated around international windows and tournaments. At United it would be constant. I think he'll go to another international side which would suit him better anyway. Matt in Manchester: A man who would pick Jordan Henderson over Kobbie Mainoo for friendlies can't be right for young players at any club. Trust the process. Back Erik ten Hag. Ed in Chester: Erik ten Hag deserves at least a season under the new ownership structure before he can be properly judged. In Erik we trust! Gav: Re Paul, Kobbie Mainoo has 20 appearances, not a handful. He's calm and composed on the ball, reads the game well and is old before his 18 years. Fully deserved, in my opinion. NMP: I'm sure Gareth Southgate looks like a romantic choice. But is someone with no top club experience ready to take on Manchester United? Good national team experience guarantees nothing, as Sunderland and Chris Coleman found out. David: I think Kobbie Mainoo deserves his place over someone like James Ward-Prowse. Players at big clubs play in the highest pressure games, like the FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool, and he's shown that he can excel in that environment. He was beating the press and has a great engine, whilst JWP is mostly a dead-ball specialist. Dave: Re Paul. I agree with your comment about Kobbie Mainoo, who will be good in years to come, but don't agree with James Ward-Prowse being included in the England squad. He's a journeyman player at best, who excels at dead balls. Started off well at West Ham, but if you actually watch what his contribution overall in a game us, it's no better than so many others now. No defence-splitting balls, and tends to pass sideways a lot. Shouldn't get anywhere near the current midfield in my personal opinion.

Mainoo targeting England Euro 2024 place after a 'mad couple of days'..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/3/21/01ad0867-5a46-4080-9fef-45741a35c672.jpgManchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo says he is targeting a place in England's Euro 2024 squad after a "mad couple of days". Mainoo, 18, was originally named in the under-21s squad but has been promoted to Gareth Southgate's senior side for friendlies against Brazil on Saturday and Belgium on 26 March at Wembley. "I was shocked and happy," Mainoo told BBC Radio 5 Live's John Murray. "It's been a whirlwind of emotions, a pretty mad couple of days." Mainoo, who was brought up in Stockport, only made his first Premier League start in November but has since become a regular under United boss Erik ten Hag. He scored a dramatic 97th-minute winner in a 4-3 win at Wolves on 1 February and played a key role for United in their thrilling 4-3 win over Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-final last Sunday. This lad looks like an absolute gem.

'The aura around the stadium has been different' since Ratcliffe arrived..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/4b56/live/841aacc0-e85c-11ee-9410-0f893255c2a0.jpgManchester United fan and presenter of The United Stand, Beth Tucker, says fans have felt "the positivity on the horizon" since Sir Jim Ratcliffe's takeover. Ratcliffe, who now controls the football operation side of the club, agreed to buy a 25% stake on 24th December 2023 for £1.03bn. "There has definitely been a massive lift since Ratcliffe came into the club, there is no doubt about that," said Tucker on the Sportsworld from BBC World Service. "On the pitch it has been a turbulent season and it has overall been poor, but we have also seen the little glimmers of hope that we can turn it around. "Since Ratcliffe came into the club, the aura around the stadium and within the fan base has been different and I think fans can feel the positivity on the horizon." United are sixth in the Premier League and nine points behind Aston Villa who occupy the fourth and final Champions League place. Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag is yet to win any silverware this season, with his final chance being the FA Cup where they will play Coventry City for a place in a consecutive final.

However, according to other reports co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos are planning for Ten Hag to be in charge at United next season, but are developing a strategy to be able to move quickly should they decide to replace him. United will prioritise a deal for Crystal Palace's French winger Michael Olise, 22, this summer over PSV attacker Johan Bakayoko - with Liverpool and Manchester City set to battle it out for the 20-year-old Belgium winger. Liverpool will rival Manchester United for Juventus' Italy forward Federico Chiesa, 26. Manchester United have decided against making Morocco midfielder Sofyan Amrabat's move from Fiorentina permanent for £17m, and AC Milan are monitoring the 27-year-old.

Here are some of your replies:
Rob: Manchester United have been woeful this season. I've been watching the capitulation when things have gone against them and seeing some matches when some players just don't seem bothered. Rashford looks uninterested sometimes and then, frustratingly, after all of it, when it's so obvious that it's happening, Ten Hag comes out and defends them. Richard: Style of play is poor, in fact there doesn't appear to be one. I don't expect United to win every trophy they are in or challenge for the league at this moment, but I do wish the team would get me off my seat by playing exciting football and scoring lots of goals. It is so frustrating watching United - it is boring at the minute. Iain: Inconsistency has been a killer for United this year, especially at the beginning of the season. There are plenty of factors that have brought this about: injuries to last year's key players, squad depth/true quality issues, too much spent on too few players and a distracting sale process. Hopefully, the new structure will help Erik next year. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/7a/Manchester_United_FC_crest.svg/200px-Manchester_United_FC_crest.svg.png

United are also interested in signing Argentine defender Aaron Anselmino, 18, from Boca Juniors. Manchester United will let Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen, 32, leave this summer. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/e083/live/e25dfdd0-ec55-11ee-860f-4b0b053e4cd0.jpgWe asked if it would be the right call to take Kobbie Mainoo to Euro 2024 after the Manchester United midfielder shone against Belgium on Tuesday.
Here is a snapshot of your comments, with most of you keen to see him don the Three Lions shirt in Germany:Ben: If you're good enough, you're old enough. The kid clearly has the temperament, the skill and the drive to help England win football games. Why would you not include him? Scott: He should go. Play as many minutes as Gareth Southgate sees fit in the group stages. If he performs well, play him for a few minutes in the knockouts. As long as he comes back fit for United... Christine: Kobbie should go to the Euros - he is a fantastic young talent. He is like a Paul Scholes and Roy Keane rolled into one, with a splash of Zinedine Zidane. One day, he will win the Ballon d'Or. Trouble is, Southgate probably won't take him and that will be a mistake. Steve: Some players need protecting and introducing slowly, to limit weight of expectation. Others, like Ryan Giggs, Lee Sharpe, the Class of 92 and Marcus Rashford, are ready to step up because they have the right temperament and maturity. Mainoo seems to fit the latter. He was sublime against Belgium. He was fluid and forward-thinking and his link-up with Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Jarrod Bowen was excellent. He is better than the alternatives already. Kevin: My biggest concern is that he may get injured. He never backed down on Tuesday, to his credit, but took some hard knocks. I'd rather he doesn't go this time - not that he isn't good enough, but let him grow, develop and mature a bit more first. He could be a great player. Iain: Mainoo should be cosseted by the club in the same way that they looked after Giggs as a teenager. United have a real reputation for bringing on well-grounded teenagers and dropping Kobbie into the glare of the Euros would be a mistake. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/0169/live/7a412aa0-ec1a-11ee-860f-4b0b053e4cd0.png

Gary O'Neil: Wolves boss says 'no truth' in Man Utd rumours..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/64F4/production/_133044852_gettyimages-2038745102.jpg Gary O'Neil worked on the coaching staff at Liverpool before moving to Bournemouth in 2021Wolves boss Gary O'Neil says there is "no truth" in reported interest from Manchester United but added it is an honour to be linked to the club. An ESPN article claimed United wanted to talk to him about a coaching role at the club as they plan a reshuffle under Sir Jim Ratcliffe. O'Neil has taken Wolves to ninth in the Premier League table despite only taking over on the eve of the season. "I don't know where it came from," said the 40-year-old of the reports. O'Neil added: "Growing up, Liverpool and Manchester United always felt special. It's an honour to be linked even if there's no truth in it. "I love it here. I'm a head coach, I'm always going to be a head coach. I'm really enjoying my time at Wolves. I was only made aware of it [the links] by the media team to prepare for your questions." O'Neil took charge of Wolves two days before the start of the season after the exit of Julen Lopetegui and, despite being restricted by finances, he has taken Wolves within six points of sixth-placed United. They could yet finish in Europe for only the second time since 1980. Wolves is the second managerial role for former Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, West Ham, QPR and Norwich midfielder O'Neil. He was sacked by Bournemouth after only 37 games in charge in the summer, weeks before taking over at Wolves, despite leading them to safety last season. It was not clear what coaching role United were reportedly lining up for him - although it is unlikely to have been as a replacement for current manager Erik ten Hag. A Sun article says they want Gareth Southgate as head coach, and his entire England coaching staff. Ratcliffe's Ineos group took over the running of United's football operations in February, with Dave Brailsford also on the board. Wolves are planning to enter new contract talks with O'Neil at the end of the season. He has just over two years left on his current deal.

The 25-year-old winger is also interesting Real Madrid, Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham. Barcelona could miss out on Germany midfielder Joshua Kimmich, 29, with Manchester United ready to make a move for the Bayern Munich star this summer. Meanwhile, United representatives have been to Spain to identify potential transfer targets and 34-year-old Spain striker Joselu, who is on loan at Real Madrid from Espanyol, is one of the names on their list. United will have to pay at least 60m euros (£51.3m) for Brazil international Gleison Bremer, 27, who plays for Juventus, and the Red Devils' striker Mason Greenwood, 22, could be included in the deal. They will also face competition from Manchester City and Newcastle United for the signing of Everton and England Under-21 centre-back Jarrad Brathwaite, 21. Finally, United and Tottenham target Jean-Clair Todibo, a 24-year-old France international centre-back, could be available for £40m from Nice this summer.

Here are some of your responses:
Man Utd fans
Yinka: Another awful United display, exemplified by the failure to defend an undeserved goal for even longer than three minutesree of stoppage time. Even the draw was a disservice to Brentford. As usual, the team remains without an identity and worse, ETH comments reek of weakness and denial, week after week. He appears out of his depth and surely has to go. Nigel: United were unbelievably poor, with no game plan and no energy. Varane and Maguire kept us in it. Thomas Frank is clearly a better coach than Ten Hag and Brentford were desperately unlucky not to win. Martin: I've been watching Man Utd since the 1960s and so have seen them thrashed as well as lose after playing well. Until this game I have never seen them play with so little drive, intent, creativity, passion, pride or professionalism. A very, very sad day. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/7a/Manchester_United_FC_crest.svg/200px-Manchester_United_FC_crest.svg.png

Sacked in the Morning: Lee Sharpe on former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/570D/production/_133058222_gettyimages-2934660.jpg Sir Alex Ferguson enjoyed 26 trophy-laden years as manager at Manchester UnitedIt's no surprise to learn that Sir Alex Ferguson let rip with one of his trademark 'hairdryer' rants in the immediate aftermath of Eric Cantona's infamous kung-fu kick at Selhurst Park. The targets for his ire may raise a few eyebrows though - just about everyone in the Manchester United dressing room other than Cantona, according to Lee Sharpe. It may have been almost 30 years ago, but the Frenchman's attack on Crystal Palace fan Matthew Simmons remains one of football's most remarkable moments. "We couldn't believe it," Sharpe told the Sacked in the Morning podcast, reliving that evening of 25 January, 1995. "He's already been sent off, so he's put us down to 10 men and put us under a load of pressure. "We're struggling in the game and then he goes into the crowd and kicks the guy. We're all thinking, 'oh my God, the manager's got to absolutely nail him after this game'. "We're scot-free. The manager can't say a word to us. We're playing badly, but he's [Cantona] just nearly killed someone." Sharpe set up David May to give depleted United the lead, but now England manager Gareth Southgate would find an equaliser for Palace to prevent the visitors going top of the league. Former winger Sharpe, 52, adds: "We get in the dressing room and I think it was Roy Keane nudging everyone saying, 'listen lads, keep your heads down, take your boots off, take your pads off, don't make eye contact, the manager's going to go ballistic. Just watch this'. "As the manager comes in, he smashes the door open, the jacket's off, shirt sleeves are up. "We're thinking, 'here we go, here we go'. We're all nudging each other like schoolkids and giggling and then he starts on everyone. "'[Gary] Pallister, you can't head it, you can't tackle. Keane, you've not laid a glove on anybody. Sharpe, you can't run, you can't tackle, you can't pass it. Andy Cole, you can't trap a bag of cement. And Eric, you can't go around doing things like that, son'. "I just sat and shrugged. It was unbelievable." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/13353/production/_133057687_gettyimages-2934641.jpgRyan Giggs, Alex Ferguson and Lee Sharpe (right) with the Premiership trophy in 1994'Fergie told me to sell my house, my dog and my car'By that stage of his Old Trafford career, Sharpe should have been used to such haranguing from the famously irascible Ferguson. There were also a lot of celebrations along the way. Signed by Ferguson from Torquay United at 17, Sharpe won three Premier League titles, two FA Cups, the League Cup, three FA Charity Shields and a European Cup Winners' Cup - all before he turned 25. "Straight away, he was very fatherly," recalled Sharpe of his manager, who met him at the train station on his first day. "I got into the first team pretty quickly, probably before he or I were really expecting it. But he shielded me from the press, so I wasn't going to get myself into any trouble. "He certainly looked after me like a father. Although, if I looked after my kids like he looked after me, I'm sure they'd have a few complaints!" During his 26 years with Manchester United, Ferguson won an incredible 38 trophies, somehow still finding time to interfere in the minutiae of his players' lives. "From top to bottom, he ran the club," said Sharpe, who moved in with his girlfriend when he was 18 after asking Ferguson's permission. "He said he'd allow it and asked if we were getting married. We'd been going out since I was 12 and that was the plan. But he said if my form suffered, I'd be going to go back into digs. I was like, 'yeah, yeah, that's not a problem'. "And then my form started to suffer. At Anfield, of all places, he decided to try to change our formation to match up with Liverpool and play three at the back and five in midfield. "Me and Ryan Giggs were running around in circles not knowing who to mark. The game was passing us by. At half-time, he said, in not so many words, 'you are absolutely useless'. "'Tomorrow, you're going to sell your house, sell your dog, sell your car. You send your girlfriend back to Birmingham, you're back in digs'. "Obviously, I didn't play great, came off with about 20 minutes to go, went home, told my girlfriend she had to go home. That was the end of that. "Then every week he would come up to me in training and ask, 'are you married yet?' I'm like, married? You sent my girlfriend home!" i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2022/10/28/09/63938109-11364519-image-a-6_1666944092895.jpg'He was spitting and frothing all over us'A year later, Sharpe earned the first of eight England caps, signed a new contract at Old Trafford, moved into his own place and tried to stay out of Ferguson's way as much as possible. "I'd hear his footsteps coming down the corridor and I'd go in the opposite direction," he said. "I just tried to avoid him at all costs. Quite a few players did." Avoiding the boss wasn't always possible, though, as Ferguson's attention to detail stretched to thwarting nights out. Sharpe and Giggs got a shock when the manager appeared at the door of the former's flat following a tip-off. "I only found out last year that it was Giggs' mum that rang him and said, 'Ryan's just gone round to Sharpie's house with a few of his pals, you'd better get round there'," Sharpe laughed. "He kicked everyone out and then gave me and Giggsy the hairdryer of our lives. He was spitting and frothing over us. That's why my hair only goes one way - from the side he was yelling!"
