Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag cancelled a planned day off on Sunday after the 4-0 humiliation at Brentford.
With no game until the visit of Liverpool to Old Trafford on 22 August, Ten Hag had intended to let his squad have the rest of the weekend off.
However, the manner of Saturday's loss prompted him to revise his plans.
It is understood he was at Carrington early on Sunday to mull over the nature of a defeat that has drawn plenty of criticism from both fans and pundits.
The loss prompted a debate on Sky between Jamie Redknapp, who feels the players need to take more responsibility, and former United skipper Gary Neville, who called for the club's owners to offer a public explanation for what has gone wrong.
Fans group MUST (Manchester United Supporters Trust), which is negotiating a share scheme with the Glazer family, has called for "urgent and radical change".
But senior United figures, despite being aware of the scale of the anger, accept there is no quick fix to the present malaise.
They continue to try and bring in the new players that Ten Hag feels are essential to his rebuild and talks with France midfielder Adrien Rabiot are ongoing.
However, Ten Hag must bring about vast improvement in the players he has, with David de Gea's pass to Christian Eriksen for Brentford's second goal symptomatic of the problem.
Ten Hag wants his players to take responsibility and be brave in possession.
Having conceded an early opener because of De Gea's blunder, rather than try to control the game to ensure the damage did not get worse, United carried on with their strategy of playing risky passes, resulting in Eriksen being robbed of possession inside his own penalty area for the second.
V Brentford, United had 67% of play 15 shots to 13 and lost 4-0, lots of messing about at the back, a howler from the keeper and have sunk to bottom of the PL.

I'm no Man U fan but I find the outrage after just two defeats just incredulous. The calls for the new manager and owners to go, people saying that Old Trafford is dilapidated (FFS!)
The sense of entitlement of these fans will only add to my schadenfreude if their plight continues.

Glazers 'haven't got a clue'
There have been multiple protests against the Glazer family's ownership of the Old Trafford side in recent years - including one in May 2021 which caused the Red Devils' match against Liverpool to be postponed.
United fans are planning another protest against the American family, who have owned the club since 2005, during their latest meeting with their bitter rivals.
#EmptyOldTrafford has even been trending on Twitter as supporters call for a boycott of the game a week on Monday.
"Joel Glazer has to get on the plane tomorrow," Neville said. "He has to get over to Manchester and he has to start to divert the issues away from the club and tell everybody what his plan is with the football club.
"When a business is failing and not performing, it is the owner of that business' fault. It is failing miserably.
"They took £24m out of the club two months ago, now they have a decrepit, rotting stadium that is second rate, when it was one of the best stadiums 10 to 15 years ago.
"You've got a football project where they haven't got a clue. You can look at the players all you like, but there are big things that need to be put right.
"They have to show up and face the music. The club is rotten."
MUST, the club's Supporters' Trust, issued a statement in the aftermath of Saturday's defeat, saying the result feels like "the culmination of a long-term direction of travel".
It added: "What we have witnessed tonight is an embarrassment - no, a humiliation - for Manchester United fans. And yet in many ways it was not a surprise."

British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to buy Manchester United. News of the 69-year-old's interest follows a Bloomberg report that the Glazer family are willing to sell a minority stake in the club. "If the club is for sale, Jim is definitely a potential buyer," Ratcliffe's spokesperson told The Times. "If something like this was possible, we would be interested in talking with a view to long-term ownership." United, 20-time English champions, are bottom of the Premier League after losing both their opening games of the season under new manager Erik ten Hag. The woeful start has intensified criticism of the Glazers and their perceived lack of investment in the team. This summer has seen new signings fail to materialise, including a fruitless pursuit of Barcelona's Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong, while superstar striker Cristiano Ronaldo could leave Old Trafford. The club has struggled since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 and has not won a trophy since 2017. There have been multiple protests against the Glazers' ownership in recent years, including one in May 2021 which caused the Red Devils' home league match against Liverpool to be postponed. Latest News Conference From the BBC. After being bottom of the Premier League after losing their first two games, Manchester United have won their last two and are currently 11th in the table. Manager Erik ten Hag added: "I see it as a start. I think we have a good base, this is the minimum we have to bring. "I was happy to see the turn and we have to keep that, to keep the spirit, to keep this winning mentality because you need it if you want a successful season in this squad." Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says his club will not buy anyone else before Thursday’s transfer deadline once the signings of Antony and Martin Dubravka are complete. Ten Hag opted not to discuss Antony’s impending arrival from Ajax because ‘the paperwork is not done’. However, he outlined why United needed more attacking players and underlined his belief Cristiano Ronaldo will remain at Old Trafford. “For this window, it will be the end,” he said. “You always have to be alert at a top club. But we will go from September to minimum January with this squad. “In the offensive department we needed to strengthen the squad. Offensive players fatigue quicker. They have to run more with high intensity.” Asked specifically whether Ronaldo will stay, Ten Hag said: “It is clear. We need quality players. You need more to cover all the games.” Ten Hag also confirmed full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka ‘will stay here’. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2022/8/31/a425c0af-90f9-480f-9139-b7517e865939.jpg

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is reportedly set to be handed £100million to spend in the January transfer window - but only if star man Cristiano Ronaldo leaves the club. The Dutchman is thought to have around £70m available to further reinforce his side this winter but should the wantaway Portuguese legend force through the move he seems so keen to get, Ten Hag could be handed another £30m, according to The Sun. Ten Hag has already made six signings for a total of around £230m, but according to reports is still looking to bring in at least three more players to rival Manchester City and Liverpool for the Premier League title. img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/AA11T4XS.img?w=634&h=424&m=6&x=158&y=68&s=71&d=71 Manchester United and Spain goalkeeper David de Gea, 31, says he was close to joining Wigan in 2009, before moving to Old Trafford. Gary Neville's Manchester United captaincy warning to Harry Maguire has become reality.i2-prod.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/incoming/article25046486.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_GettyImages-1424049005.jpgGary Neville's warning about the pressures of the Manchester United captaincy have become a reality for Harry Maguire at Old Trafford. United's captain has been struggling for game time since the heavy 4-0 defeat at Brentford on the second matchday of the season. Ever since then, Maguire has had to settle for cameo appearances as Erik ten Hag favours Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez. When Maguire received the honour of captaining the Reds, Neville was quick to send a warning to the central defender. Following the announcement, he tweeted: "Dream come true to be named the Manchester United captain.

Manchester City v Manchester United - Erik ten Hag is set to be without Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial for Manchester United’s clash against Manchester City on Sunday.
The Red Devils take on their city rivals at the Etihad as they look to continue their four-match winning run.
Martial has played just 45 minutes of United’s season so far but he impressed as a second half substitute in a 2-1 win against Liverpool.
But an Achilles injury after a hamstring strain has kept the Frenchman out of action since mid-August and he’s yet to train this week.
The former Monaco ace is not expected to return to training before the derby but there had been more optimism that Rashford would be fit, according to the Times.
The England forward sustained a muscle injury in United’s 3-1 win against Arsenal before the international break and was removed late on as a precaution.
Rashford was left out of England’s Nations League squad, partly because he was injured.
A three-week break was expected to be enough for Rashford to recover but he’s yet to return to training and it’s unlikely that he’ll be risked at the Etihad, even if he manages to return in the next 48 hours.
Should the pair be unavailable, Cristiano Ronaldo is likely to be selected to start.
The Portugal captain hasn’t started in the Premier League since a defeat to Brentford, with Ten Hag favouring a younger front three.

Manchester City 6 Manchester United 3 - 54% - 46% - Shots 22-12 - On Target 10-8 - Referee: Michael Oliver.
WOW, WOW & WOW What a game that was:Manchester City's Erling Haaland became the first player to score three successive Premier League home hat-tricks as Manchester United were humiliated in the derby at Etihad Stadium. Haaland's rampant start to the season continued as he made it 17 goals in 10 games since his move from Borussia Dortmund while Phil Foden scored his first treble for City as they closed the gap on pace-setters Arsenal to one point. This was a brutal reality check for United after their recent improvement, as the reigning Premier League champions ran riot to illustrate the gulf in class between the teams. City's lightning start was rewarded when Foden swept home Bernardo Silva's cross after eight minutes before Haaland inevitably joined the action with a header from a corner 11 minutes before half-time. As United subsided, Haaland slid in a third from Kevin de Bruyne's perfect pass then turned provider to set up a simple finish for Foden before the break. United's new signing Antony replied with a superb goal from 25 yards to pull one back but it only provoked City to up the tempo again, Haaland thumping home his third from Sergio Gomez's cross then again showing he can be creator by setting up Foden for City's sixth. Haaland's third put him in the record books following hat-tricks at home to Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace. Anthony Martial's late goal for United was greeted in near silence, as was his added-time penalty, on a day of embarrassment for the visitors and their manager Erik ten Hag and one of elation for City and Pep Guardiola. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/D8C4/production/_126929455_gettyimages-1429645397.jpg

Erik ten Hag has called on his Manchester United players to "play smart but nasty".United saw a four-game Premier League winning run ended by a humiliating 6-3 defeat by Manchester City on Sunday. Ten Hag's sixth-placed side have received 23 bookings in seven games his season - the second most in the league. "I know nasty," Ten Hag said. "I know what nasty is. I think also in that matter we can progress. Sometimes also play a little bit more smart." The Dutch manager added: "We have too many bookings and some in the start [of matches]. I heard in the Premier League they will play tough but I'm really wondering why we collect so many bookings. I don't understand." Only Nottingham Forest (24) have accumulated more yellow cards than United in the English top-flight this term. Portuguese right-back Diogo Dalot earned a team-high fourth booking after just two minutes in Sunday's Manchester derby loss. "The first booking on Sunday, I really don't understand that. We want to play tough, we want to keep the game going," Ten Hag said. "Then in the second minute already it's a booking. I think it's a duel, clear it was a foul, but to then get booked? Also I saw many other bookings where I think 'OK, is that necessary'? "But also I take it to the players. I have to keep the mirror [on them] that they have to play smart, but also they have to play nasty as well." United responded to their weekend disappointment with a 3-2 Europa League win over Cypriot side Omonia on Thursday. Ten Hag said he wants that result to be a "warm-up" for Sunday's Premier League trip to Everton (19:00 BST) as he seeks a consistent level of performance and intensity from his squad. "It's physical, it's mental but it's also sustainability especially," Ten Hag said. "When you had a lack of it in the last years, it's not something that you build or progress in a week or a month. It has to be in your system. It's a demand nowadays in top football. "I think it's quite clear that [Manchester] City is a standard in that, and there are more teams, but I think also we can deliver that. "We have seen it against Liverpool, we have seen it against Arsenal, but now we have to do it on a consistent basis and that is what we have to work for now. "But that will not come overnight. It will also take more than weeks, it will take months." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/7CF6/production/_127009913_gettyimages-1429638237.jpg

Manchester United Supporters' Trust set to launch legal action over Chelsea away ticket allocation.Manchester United Supporters' Trust say they will take legal action unless more away fans are allowed when the team plays at Chelsea later this month. They want Hammersmith and Fulham Council to issue a new safety certificate to allow the full allocation of 2,994 travelling supporters. United's allocation has been reduced to 2,370 because of policing concerns. MUST said "fans are being treated like second-class citizens". A spokesperson added: "For a Supporters Trust to engage lawyers is always a last resort, but enough is enough." The Premier League confirmed last week that the match will kick off at 17:30 BST on Saturday, 22 October. The match was initially scheduled for 16:30 on Sunday, 23 October but was moved to the Saturday because of Chelsea's Champions League fixture the following Tuesday. The Metropolitan Police said that because TV commitments prevented the "high-risk" fixture from starting by 16:45 on the rearranged date - which, for safety purposes, is the agreed cut-off time with London clubs on weekends - an alternative solution had to be reached. "Our first priority in policing football - and the increasing crime and disorder associated with it - is the safety of fans and those who live and work in the local community," said the Met. However, a letter to the council sent by MUST's legal representatives highlighted that "there is no history of significant disorder at previous matches" between the two sides, which include matches that have kicked off later than 16:45. The letter states that if they do not receive a response by 12:00 BST on Friday, 14 October, then MUST "reserve the right to commence judicial review proceedings" against the council "without further notice". "United fans and football supporters in general have had their fill of being on the receiving end of unfair and irrational decisions by councils and the police, who seem to consider us to be a public order problem rather than ordinary people freely enjoying a day out," said a MUST spokesperson. "Tickets had been sold for this game and fans are being treated like second-class citizens." Chelsea Supporters' Trust said it stands with MUST and also criticised the decision. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/7F69/production/_127071623_united.png
