Breaking: Manchester United have sacked manager Erik Ten Hag..by BBC Sporti.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/10/28/10/91365259-14010313-image-a-9_1730112383532.jpgManchester United have sacked manager Erik ten Hag following the club's poor start to the season. Ten Hag's final game was Sunday's 2-1 defeat by West Ham that left the club 14th in the Premier League with just three wins from their opening nine matches. United are also 21st of 36 teams in the Europa League table, having drawn their three opening fixtures. Ruud van Nistelrooy, who joined the club as Ten Hag's assistant last summer, has been named as interim manager. The Dutchman was informed of the decision by the club's board on Monday morning, fewer than 24 hours after the club's defeat by West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The club triggered a one-year extension in Ten Hag's contract following May's FA Cup final victory over Manchester City but just three months later he has been dismissed after overseeing United's second worst start to a Premier League campaign.

Couldn't happen to a nicer club...just who is surprised... only surprised he stayed this long..still revelling in the Fergie years

'Nothing is decided' - Manchester United target Ruben Amorim on future..by Tiago Carrasco, BBC Sporti.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/10/30/23/91483189-0-image-a-45_1730329535083.jpgSporting boss Ruben Amorim says he has not yet made a decision about his future after Manchester United expressed an interest in appointing him manager. Sporting confirmed earlier on Tuesday that United had made an approach and are willing to pay Amorim's 10m euros (£8.3m) release clause. Speaking after his side's 3-1 Portuguese League Cup quarter-final win against Nacional on Tuesday evening, Amorim told Sport TV:, external "Nothing is decided yet. I don't know if it's the farewell game or not." Then in a news conference he added: "There is interest from Manchester United, there is the payment of a contract term and when I have something more solid, I will come here and tell my position, because it will be my choice. "While I don't have everything decided, for one side or the other, I can't tell much more". Amorim added that he will be at training on Wednesday to prepare for Friday's league game against Estrela da Amadora. Asked if he will be in the dugout at Old Trafford for Manchester United's game against Chelsea on Sunday, Amorim said: "I will be here." But when pressed added: "I don't know."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/c043/live/ecb3f520-0913-11ef-82e8-cd354766a224.pngManchester United hoped to appoint Sporting manager Ruben Amorim in time for Sunday's Premier League match against Chelsea at Old Trafford. However, Manchester United are locked in talks with Sporting over Amorim's notice period, which is a number of weeks. Amorim will still be in charge for Sporting's next league fixture on Friday, before travelling to Manchester. The 39-year-old Portuguese manager wants to sign Sporting and Portugal centre-back Goncalo Inacio, English winger Marcus Edwards and Portuguese forward Pedro Goncalves, once he is at Manchester United. Interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy expects to leave the club when Amorim is appointed. Whoever succeeds Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager will have a limited budget to strengthen the squad in January. Manchester United are interested in signing 23-year-old Bayern Munich and Canada full-back Alphonso Davies, but the player is set on a move to Real Madrid. The club will cut their losses on £86m Brazil winger Antony, 24, following Erik ten Hag's sacking.

Match report by Simon Stone at Old Trafford, Chief football news reporterRuud van Nistelrooy enjoyed a winning start as Manchester United’s interim manager as his side thrashed Leicester to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. Two days after Van Nistelrooy was appointed as stand-in following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag, his pre-match demand for entertainment was met in full. Casemiro started the fun with a sensational long-range strike and by half-time the Brazilian had another as he followed up an initial header that bounced off both posts by driving home from eight yards. In between those efforts, Alejandro Garnacho fired home his fifth goal of the season and skipper Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick deflected in off Leicester full-back James Justin. It wasn’t perfect from the hosts as old defensive frailties returned to allow Bilal El Khannouss and Conor Coady to score before half-time. The latter effort came after the ball had struck Diogo Dalot and bounced invitingly for the former England man to apply the first-time finish. But in front of Sir Alex Ferguson, back at Old Trafford for the first time since being told he was being stripped of his paid ambassadorial role, and United’s powerbrokers who are aiming to replace Ten Hag with Sporting boss Ruben Amorim, the hosts always had an element of control. Fernandes added a fifth on 59 minutes when he took maximum advantage of Caleb Okoli’s under-hit backpass. United will travel to face Tottenham in the quarter-finals, with that tie lined up for the week commencing 16th December. i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2024/09/11/manchester-united-topic-preview.jpg

i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/10/30/23/91488515-0-image-m-44_1730329521722.jpgManchester United's interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy has spoken publicly for the first time since taking charge, writing in the United Review matchday programme for Wednesday's match against Leicester. He said: "As I am sure everyone can imagine, I am writing these notes with a huge amount of mixed emotions. Erik ten Hag brought me back to Manchester United in the summer and, while I have only been part of the coaching staff here for a few months, I will always be grateful to him for giving me the opportunity, and I am saddened to see him leave. "Even on an interim basis, it is a great honour to manage the club I love for however long I am asked to do so. I can promise that I will continue to give my all, in whatever capacity, to try to turn around our fortunes. "Despite our results, I am loving being back at Old Trafford and working with the team and staff every day. We've seen the squad's potential at times this season, but clearly not often enough. "Now is the time for everyone at the club to work together, give everything and turn this season around while we have time. From my experiences as both a player and a coach here, I can say for sure that when players, staff and supporters pull together, Manchester United can be unstoppable." More from Manchester United interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has written his first message to fans in the United Review matchday programme: "We've seen the squad's potential at times this season, but clearly not often enough. Now is the time for everyone at the club to work together, give everything and turn this season around while we have time. "It will not be easy, of course. Leicester are Premier League opposition and they will also be highly motivated by the prospect of moving into the quarter-finals. However, every game we play is also an opportunity for us to remind everyone - ourselves included - of what this great club stands for. "When I returned in the summer as Erik's assistant, it was because I believe that Manchester United can climb back to the levels that I knew here as a player. I still have that belief, but it will take time and a lot of hard work. "The first step is to restore the winning habit, starting at Old Trafford. I know first-hand the positive effect our wonderful fans can have on the team, so please get behind the players as we fight together to move a step closer to Wembley."

Jose Mourinho 'encouraged Ruben Amorim to take up the Man United job' - with former Red Devils boss 'the first person' the Sporting coach contacted after the club made contact..by Matthew McEvoy
i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/10/30/20/91483185-14021421-image-a-2_1730321166621.jpg The pair have previously worked together on Mourinho's coaching course at the start of Amorim's careerJose Mourinho encouraged Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim to take the Manchester United job. The current Fenerbahce manager and former United boss has served as a mentor to Amorim, after the Sporting coach completed an internship at Mourinho's High Performance Football Coaching course, back in 2018. And Mourinho was the first person Amorim turned to, when approached about the manager's position at Man United, according to the Sun. Amorim is hotly tipped to be the next boss at Old Trafford with Sporting saying the Manchester club have triggered their manager's £8.5million (€10m) release clause. But it is also understood that Amorim wants to delay his move to England until after Sporting play Manchester City in the Champions League in Lisbon, next Tuesday. Mourinho said: 'I think he has the conditions to be able to coach in any league and he has the conditions to be able to coach in any club.' Amorim has previously referred to Mourinho as a 'reference point' and said of him: 'Mourinho is one of a kind. There won't be another Mourinho. Mourinho is unique.' The Portuguese coach's next match is at home on Friday to Estrela, and as discussion over his move rolls on tt seems certain that interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy will therefore be in charge for the visit of Chelsea to Old Trafford on Sunday. United have agreed to pay Amorim's £8.5million release clause, but the club want a further £4.1million for him to take his Sporting backroom staff with him. The sticking point, however, is that Sporting are looking to promote his assistant Carlos Fernandez to Amorim's post despite him being only 29. While there are reports that Sporting will hold Amorim to a 30-day notice period the coach is convinced he will be at Old Trafford next week.

Man Utd 5-2 Leicester - the fans' verdict

We asked for your thoughts after Wednesday's League Cup game between Manchester United and Leicester.
Here are some of your comments:
United fansEdward: Great game! I thought the sacking of Erik ten Hag would affect the team and they'd play miserably again. Van Nistelrooy‘s style was great, even if it is for a short burst. There's lots of confidence added back to the squad and fans! Spencer: You could have predicted this result after the departure of Erik. As a United fan we have witnessed this happen so many times after a manager's sacking. I question how this team can turn it on when they feel like it. Of course it was an enjoyable performance, but the cracks were still present. Let’s not get carried away, Amorim has a big job on his hands. Rowan: Great performance all round, with Casemiro and Bruno showing how good they truly are with the right guidance and energy from the sidelines, albeit against Leicester's 'B-team'. The passing and flair we displayed is something that was sorely missed throughout Ten Hag's campaign. Hope Van Nistelrooy or Amorim recognise we play best when we play faster on the turn. Toby: Ruud has done a good job to start with. For me, Casemiro was outstanding, a fantastic performance from him. It is a shame that Ruud is not in charge for the whole season.

Manchester United will pay compensation to enable a number of Amorim's backroom staff to join him at Old Trafford. Sweden forward Viktor Gyokeres is unhappy with Amorim's decision to leave Sporting, after rejecting offers to leave the club himself this summer. But Gyokeres is likely to join Amorim at Manchester United, if a deal can be agreed. Meanwhile, Manchester United could rival Liverpool for Wolves' 23-year-old Algeria wing-back Rayan Ait-Nouri.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/2f7f/live/95709000-0915-11ef-bee9-6125e244a4cd.jpgEarlier, we asked for your views on Ruben Amorim's appointment as head coach and what his first tasks will be at Manchester United.
Here are some more of your comments:Liam: Comes with credentials and an impressive record over a short time. Would not expect miracles. Ten Hag bought some bad players. Rashford seems at times like he does not want to make the effort. Seems to be a problem with player power at Man Utd. If the players do not make the effort, the manager gets sacked. So the new man will have to sort this out first. Eldon: As a United fan all my life (50 years) I have seen managers come and go so we must be careful not to get carried away with the new man. He certainly plays the attacking football of old United so only time will tell if those glorious days and a fortress at the Theatre of Dreams can be reinstated. Philip: It's interesting that he is listed as being head coach and not manager with a contract only until 2027. Ineos seem to be playing it smart. It does show credit on his side that he wants some time to finish off with Sporting before he officially takes charge. United just need to start showing a reason for fans to believe. Matthew: For me, it seems players like the centre-backs, Ugarte and the physical Hojlund might benefit from this new potential back-three style. However, part of me fears for Bruno, or wingers like Rashford and Garnacho, as it seems they can't all be integrated into a 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 team, unless Fernandes drops deeper alongside Ugarte. But bring it on! Chris: A stellar appointment that was well overdue - great pedigree, football intellect and attractive football. This is the inspirational appointment we have been waiting on since Fergie departed. Mark: I am encouraged by the fact that he has taken an underperforming club and made them into serious winners. Sir Alex Ferguson did something similar with Aberdeen. His man-management and coaching skills will be tested. I wish him well. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/10/31/15/91518575-14025679-image-a-46_1730390365197.jpg
