What's the story with Marcus Rashford..? ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/31/fb67e4ea-7a3c-4bf2-b604-ef4ad1fd5c35.jpgManchester United say forward Marcus Rashford "has taken responsibility for his actions" after reports he was seen in nightspots in Northern Ireland on Wednesday and Thursday evening. The England international missed training at United on Friday after reporting ill and did not feature in Sunday's 4-2 FA Cup win over Newport. A United statement read: "This has been dealt with as an internal disciplinary matter, which is now closed." Boss Erik ten Hag said after Sunday's FA Cup win in Wales: "He reported ill. The rest is an internal matter and I will deal with that." Rashford trained at Carrington that day and is available for selection against Wolves. This is not the first time the 26-year-old has been in trouble with the club this season. He was dropped from the starting line-up for their Carabao Cup fourth-round defeat by Newcastle in November as a disciplinary measure. On that occasion, Ten Hag was unhappy at him being seen out celebrating his birthday in one of Manchester's most exclusive nightspots just hours after being involved in an abject 3-0 defeat by Manchester City. The frontman has only scored four goals for United this season after hitting a career-best 30 last term. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/31/8c4b082c-6560-46d5-8b3f-029ebfd44fba.jpgThe Daily Telegraph's Jim White says Erik ten Hag knows he "needs" Marcus Rashford and any transfer interest in him will likely be rebuffed. "United are in dire need of someone to put the ball in the back of the net and we know that Rashford can do," he told the Transfer Gossip Daily podcast. "Funnily enough, before his little outing to Belfast, I I thought he was beginning to look as though he was returning to form. I thought there was a little bit of a spark there, you know. "He's a man who really relies on confidence which has been lacking and I think it was coming back to him and anyway I just cannot see Erik ten Hag letting him go. "It's a very different situation from his fallout with Jadon Sancho. I think he regards Rashford as his as his principal source of goals and he needs him and they're not going to let him go." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/31/54782dc4-0764-451b-9ce5-57562764f7d1.jpgPat Nevin, writing for the BBC Football Extra newsletter: Manchester United rarely let you down. Well, they rarely do when you are writing for the sports pages. For a moment there was the real possibility of one of the greatest upsets in the history of the FA Cup at the weekend, when Newport County from the fourth tier of English football, came back from 2-0 down to equalise. Had United lost then Erik ten Hag might as well have flown straight to Amsterdam rather than Manchester. Sacking would have been inevitable. As it was, the nightmare was averted but there is always the next headline and this was duly provided by Marcus Rashford’s absence. Was he rested, injured, ill or simply in the manager’s bad books after popping off to Northern Ireland for a spot of nightclubbing and forgetting to tell his boss? Whatever the truth, the phrase, “it will be dealt with internally” made me smile. Nothing happens internally at United; the club is too big and too leaky - the news always seems to get out. I feel unqualified to have a go at Marcus. I once popped over to Heathrow one Tuesday after training for Chelsea. I flew to Paris on a cheap standby ticket and got the train another 200 miles south to Bourges just to see my then favourite band - The Cocteau Twins, seeing as you asked. I stayed over, got the red eye back in time for training and the team manager was none the wiser. Even goody-two-shoes here had a little adventure now and again. Marcus probably just felt he needed a break, some time away from Manchester’s mayhem. Unfortunately, you just can’t get away with it if you are a United and England striker, especially one whose goals have sunk from one in two, to one in five, in just one season. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/31/2624581d-2ea6-4a88-b389-30f82a084a60.jpg

Manchester United transfer news: Winger Facundo Pellistri joins Granada on loan..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/A5F1/production/_132518424_gettyimages-1850791032.jpg Pellistri's last United appearance came against Wigan in the FA Cup third roundManchester United winger Facundo Pellistri has joined Granada on loan until the end of the season. The Uruguay international, 22, who joined United from Penarol for £9m in October 2020, has made 14 appearances this season. But only three of those appearances have been starts and Pellistri was an unused substitute against Newport County in Sunday's FA Cup win. He returns to La Liga having had two loan spells at Alaves.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/5e18/live/06760440-c048-11ee-ace0-c35c1b4f6d82.jpgOn Wednesday, we asked you what Manchester United's ideal final day of business in the January transfer window would look like.
Here is a selection of your responses:
Bruce: An experienced, goalscoring striker to show Rasmus Hojland the ropes, a tall central defender to help Lisandro Martinez and a creative midfielder to help/cover for Bruno Fernandes. Pete: Need a new striker to help out. Then wait until the summer to totally dismantle the team and start again with Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho, Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw as the core. Alexander: As much as I would love to write about all the players we could buy, the reality is we're strapped for cash and have already spent big. I'd be happy with an even a few youngsters to build for the future. Nigel: The recruitment needed is such that it cannot possibly be done in one transfer window. Considering the unavailability of Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford's lack of form, a striker would seem to be priority. The defence needs shoring up as well to get us through the rest of the season. Sadly, I can't see any of this happening any time soon. Jack: I would have loved to see Karim Benzema at United for a few months, but obviously that isn't going to happen now. Would like a striker to back up Rasmus. Serhou Guirassy, maybe?

THURSDAY 1st FEBRUARY 2024 - PREMIER LEAGUE
Wolverhampton Wanderers 3 (Serabia 71 pen, Kilman 85, Neto 90+5) Manchester United 4 (Rashford 5, Hojlund 22, McTominay 75, Mainoo 90+7)
ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/8325/live/ff81b140-c153-11ee-9b48-c342525664d4.jpg
Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund speaking to TNT Sports: "[It's] mixed feelings. Of course I think we should have closed it off but I am very happy for Kobbie, of course." On his own form: "I think there is an old saying with strikers that if you get the first they keep rolling. This one is a scrappy one but I need to be there and it is a good cross from Luke [Shaw]. "I think my role is to find the spaces where I can be free and normally the manager wants me to go in the front to create space in behind. It is very important." On settling into the Premier League: "I think it is a little bit faster to what I was used to in the Italian League. I think you need to be a split-second faster. need to get used to that. Both physically and mentally you need to be ready before you get the ball." More from Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund to TNT Sports: "I don't want to jinx anything but hopefully it can be a turning point. It's a big win away and maybe we can get some wins going. January was OK for us and now I hope we have a nice February. We take every game at a time and we go for everything we can win. We want to win every game and go for the FA Cup and get as high in the table as we can. Hopefully we can get the Champions League." On conceding late on: "We need to sort them situations out better. I was fuming on the bench of course. We need to do better in this situation. We turn it on again but we are happy." On Kobbie Mainoo: "I didn't really get to see him in pre-season but everyone was saying he is an incredible talent. He has a nice body type and he is mature already. He is very cam and also outside the pitch he is a nice and relaxed guy. You can see he is composed. He is an incredible talent. I thought I was young but he is stepping up at the age of 18." On the connections growing in United's team: I think like you say, it is about time. That's partly due to needing to get connections in the team. I say to them that if they pass and I am not there then they can scream at me. But also if I am there and they don't pass, I can scream at them. It is a good chemistry we are starting to get. You can see the relationship with me, Marcus and Garna is getting good." Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes speaking to TNT Sports: "It was a really difficult game. We knew Wolves were a difficult team. We gave them some chances and we should have controlled the game. It was hard work and an amazing talent in the end of the game that made us win." On Kobbie Mainoo: "He is a big talent. I have seen him play for the under-18s and I said a couple of years ago the name of Kobbie without knowing if he would come and play for the first team." On Rashford's goalscoring return: "We all have a point to prove every time we come on the pitch. Not only on Marcus, but everyone else. But obviously the guys up front have to score. He is a special talent. He has been proving himself. We are not in the position we want to be and we have to work hard to get where we want to be." Manchester United match winner Kobbie Mainoo speaking to TNT Sports: "It is a dream come true. It is a tough place to come. We had to get the win. I have still not come down from it. I still feel like I am dreaming to be honest. "To start playing in the Premier League for my boyhood club has been amazing. Now it's about trying to win more games." On playing with Bruno Fernandes: "He is a good role model to look up to and to share the pitch with him is crazy."

We should've been 3-0 or 4-0 up by an hour. "It shows the spirit is good and that this team is resilient and every time we're fighting back, but we shouldn't be in this situation because we should take responsibility on the pitch when you are dominating the game and are 2-1 up and 3-1 up. "Don't let the opponent get back to 3-2 or 3-3, that shouldn't happen, but of course, it pleased me a lot when you get the winner and it's great momentum. Kobbie Mainoo, the calmness he had, scored his first Premier League goal and a very important one because this is a big win. "He is very calm and has capabilities and he progresses and from game to game, he's getting stronger. We prepared very well and secure because he had some problems physically last season in the spring and the summer with two big injuries. This season, we took some time to get him in the team, but he's definitely now in the team and I hope he can keep calm, keep progressing and push himself to higher levels. "I think the whole team played good, but when the whole team plays well, we can serve him and he's always a threat. He can score goals and also, make key actions, give assists, make good crosses and one on ones. He has capabilities, it is up to him and also, up to the team to serve him, it is up to him to finish it off it in the final third. "It's always about the team, what is best for the team. We didn't have the opportunity to often play with a strong team and we want to get routines in and in a short slot, maybe we have to make some changes but we have to get routines in. We have to be fresh, but to get routines in, often you have to play the same players."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/af7d/live/1d726510-b253-11ee-8f07-bbfdfa890097.jpgWe asked you for your thoughts on Thursday's Premier League match between Wolves and Manchester United.
Here are some of your comments:
Bobby: Some great individual performances in Mainoo, Garnacho, Rashford and Shaw but I have some serious worries about Erik ten Hag's tactics. Bringing off players like Rashford and Garnacho for Antony and Maguire when Wolves were on the up just invited all the pressure. Avoidable! Much-improved performance but starting to question the manager more after every game. Jason: I thought we were in control until the farcical decision from the referee and VAR officials. How can you look at that on a repeat and think that it is a penalty? Ludicrous. I’m happy we come away with the three points but again, overshadowed by inconsistency with VAR. John: Antony should never play for United again. He is awful. I don’t understand why Amad is not getting a chance. A decent United performance but they need to kill teams off and shut up shop. Progress and good character to win it, but still a lot to work on.

The 36-year-old, who won 87 caps for Belgium and appeared at two World Cups, had ended his international career in 2019. Fellaini joined Everton from Standard Liege in 2008 and moved to United in 2013 before signing for Chinese Super League club Shandong Luneng in 2019. "What an incredible journey it's been," said Fellaini in a social media post. "I am so grateful to have played the sport I love at the highest level." Fellaini said he was "proud" to have represented the clubs he had and that it was "an honour to have played for the Belgian national team at the Olympics of 2008, Euro 2016 and the World Cups of 2014 and 2018". He made 141 Premier League appearances for Everton, scoring 25 goals and registering 14 assists. Fellaini scored 22 goals in 177 appearances in all competitions for United, who he helped win the 2016 FA Cup as well as the Europa League and EFL Cup in 2017.

On Garnacho's performance: "It is a time where he has to get used to this position because he prefers a little more left. He is playing now from the right, has some freedom and fluidity in the game where he could find some spaces. He was very good in his attacking, creating and dribbling. I am very pleased with this performance. "I have said it before in the last couple of months the future for Manchester United is very bright. We have some real high potentials, we can play fluid football, speed it up as we need and defend well. "The goals today showed young players with high potential. They get used to the Premier League standards. Every game they are growing and improving and adapting to a higher level. "When they enjoy their football the confidence comes and you can see the belief is growing. "The celebration I liked it. It is showing we do it together." On Lisandro Martinez's injury: "I can't tell you detail. We have to find out the next days what the diagnosis. It is very bad, very bad for him and the team. He is just returning. He is very important for us. He brings spirit to the team, aside from his football ability." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/2/5/ebd47c2b-b1fa-46c6-8c0d-f3facb35a793.jpgManchester United boss Erik ten Hag, speaking to MOTD: "I said before, when you don't build on the last win then it is nothing. That was our challenge before and the lads did it. "I am happy with the way we played. We were a threat all the game through. When we serve our front line we can score goals. They can be direct and score goals. On Rasmus Hojlund: "His confidence is growing. He is playing better on the ball, he is a target and he is linking up. It is about togetherness." On Lisandro Martinez injury: "It seems bad. We have to wait, make the right diagnosis in the coming days and then we will see. Hopefully it is not too bad, we can only pray. "He worked so hard to return and now after two games it looks like he has to sit some games out again." On young players like Hojlund, Garnacho and Mainoo: "The future for Manchester United is very good because we have high potentials. I think that picture [below] covers the lot, how they are together and want to play football with adventure and enjoyment. If we keep this process going I am sure we will achieve high levels. "We are building a team, we signed young players and give them opportunities. This is a process with ups and downs and we have to realise this. Our experienced players will help them and we need them and they will help the young players perform."

Lisandro Martinez: Manchester United defender to miss eight weeks through injury..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/15865/production/_132556188_gettyimages-1985295581.jpg Martinez has made 55 appearances in all competitions since joining the club in July 2022
Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez will be out until April at the earliest after suffering knee ligament damage during his side's 3-0 win over West Ham on Sunday. Martinez limped off in the second half after attempting to shield the ball from Hammers defender Vladimir Coufal. The 26-year-old was playing in only his third league game after more than three months out with a foot injury. The club said he "is expected to be out of action for at least eight weeks". However he will not require surgery. "We all wish Licha a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the pitch later in the season," a club statement added. United boss Erik ten Hag said after Sunday's victory that the injury "doesn't look good" and described it as a "personal disaster" for Martinez. Martinez missed the latter stages of the 2022-23 season after fracturing a metatarsal in April and suffered "an aggravation" to the injury at the beginning of this campaign. He missed 22 games in total with his foot injury before making returning against Tottenham on 14 January.

Here are some of your comments
Man Utd fans
Roger: Thought it was a much better performance and showed much more teamwork/togetherness. If they can keep everyone fit and injury free, and continue to play like they did on Sunday, I'm hopeful that fourth place in the league can be achieved. Barney: Convincing win. Great to see the youngsters starting to gel. Garnacho, Hojlund and Mainoo are really making a big difference now. Fantastic performance. Onwards and upwards. Tony: United look dangerous when they move forward. However, at times it appeared that West Ham were a lot quicker on the ball, especially in the midfield. To continue to progress they need physically stronger players. But overall, the attacking is exciting when they get the break.

United manager Erik ten Hag will have reduced influence over the club's transfer strategy from this summer. Manchester United's English forward Mason Greenwood, currently on loan at Getafe, is on Atletico Madrid's shortlist of forwards they will consider signing this summer. Manchester United will target players who are entering the final year of their contracts this summer and could look at players such as Bayern Munich's Germany midfielder Joshua Kimmich, 28, Lille's Canada forward Jonathan David, 24, and Nice's French midfielder Khephren Thuram, 22. Manchester United are tracking Copenhagen and Sweden Under-21 international winger Roony Bardghji, 18. Manchester United are unlikely to offer Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes, 29, a significant pay rise despite interest from Saudi Arabia.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe attends Munich memorial service..by Bill Rice, BBC Radio Manchester
ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/5d60/live/46fe3a90-c517-11ee-ace0-c35c1b4f6d82.jpgManchester United's new part owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe was among those in attendance at Old Trafford today, as the club marked the 66th anniversary of the Munich air disaster. On the 6th February 1958, 23 people - including eight Manchester United players - died when the plane they were in crashed during landing following a fuel stop in Munich. Despite heavy rain thousands of United supporters gathered at the Munich plaque outside the ground for the service to sing songs and hear poems dedicated to those who lost their lives. Ratcliffe attended alongside former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and his Ineos colleague Sir Dave Brailsford, while Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham was also there. Former players Brian Kidd and Paddy Crerand were also in attendance, while wreaths were laid by current men's and women's managers Erik ten Hag and Marc Skinner, and club captains Bruno Fernandes and Katie Zelem. It was an especially poignant afternoon as it was the first anniversary since the death of Sir Bobby Charlton, who was the last living player who survived the crash. Tributes were also paid to other who have lost their lives in the last 12 months, including Sir Alex Ferguson's wife Lady Cathy. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/2/7/bc241bcf-c1d9-4f3f-9360-614b8dc00d6b.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/2/7/47a976f7-bab3-4b3d-8d2c-f80b20a1fded.png
