Have any of you seen the OS claim that the addition of some 340 seats, in yet another tent, is the start of the redevelopment of the mem ? honestly, people wonder why the 82 ltd call us the gift that keeps on giving. Given the size of the so called redevelopment, don’t you think it would have been better to just do it and not draw attention to it. I know many got over excited when the AQ’s took over but this cries tinpot more than anything else I’ve seen reported on. Carry on and call me negative but when the addition of a canvas roofed extra 340 seats makes the OS, surely it must make you feel anything other than pride ? If this truly is part of the revitalising of the ground then I despair. Thoughts ?

I refuse to believe this is part of the redevelopment! Surely just a stop-gap. I applaud the club for trying to get some covered seating for families no matter how embarrassing it is.
We can only hope there's a proper end game still to come. Please??

How is the installation of a temporary seated structure, to make the matchday experience for parents & their young children a lot more comfortable, embarrassing exactly?
As said above, purely a stop gap for time being. It’s kind of obvious.
Only a total moron would believe this is the actual redevelopment. Reading the Bristol Post for your Rovers latest certainly doesn’t help.

If that is your thought process from the club trying something to encourage future fans, albeit as a stop gap, for the sake of your health might it be time to do something else on a Saturday. All this negativity must be harmful for you.

Training was indeed at Eastville Park during our great days of the '50s. Maybe something in that! Plus pre-season training in the sand dunes at Weston-Super-Mare. Also the cinder area behind the Muller Road End at our beloved Eastville Stadium. (sigh) - those were the days.... Seriously, I thought the current training ground now belongs to Red Maids School, not sure if we'll have it until the new training ground is built. As for the original post - no KP it's NOT embarrassing at all and only the Evil Post referred to it as the start of redevelopment, which I commented on saying the headline was rather misleading.

The Bristol Post is where it was labelled as part of the redevelopment of the Mem. The Bristol Post drew attention to it, not the club. If this is a cost effective way of getting more seats into the ground, then I'm all for it. The bigger question is the long term plan for the future of whatever stadium we play in, which is yet to be addressed anywhere. I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing but it would be nice to know what kind of broad avenues our owners may be thinking.

Jools, I think you’ve misinterpreted the OS, I can’t see anything about this being the start of redevelopment on the Rovers site. As others have said it’s just a temporary stand (in fact there’s two, one for away fans too on the other side of the Dribuild) but only that joke of a paper, the Post, called it the ‘start of redevelopment’. The club surveyed fans, they said they wanted more seating, this is a short term and immediate temporary response to that demand. Personally I’m all for it - as long as it IS a short term thing and there’s bigger redevelopment plans afoot to be revealed within the next year!

Hey its OUR stadium, OUR temporary fix and OUR way of doing things.
If we compare OURselves to the other lot over the river, forget it, there's no competition.
I'd still rather have what we got.
We all want more, but I'm embracing this because I know what it's like not to own anything, and I'm proud to be a GasHead. It ain't perfect but it's us.
Ps....if we have a Shrewsbury season next year, all this just won't matter.

Ah the pre season at W-S-M under canvas. We also played cricket pre season and watched Howard Radford and Geoff Bradford open the batting at Broad Walk ,Knowle C.C.

Like they took the piss out of us by calling us the gas and we turned it to our advantage. 330 extra home seats and rumoured the same for away fans is potentially extra revenue. I'm guessing the capacity will not be increased until or unless we can get a safety certificate signed off, but like the SW stand filled an awkward gap, I actually think two new stands on the West side will actually make the place look better. Given our Black Arab Bedouin tendencies, I would actually add more tents. In this case for increased hospitality. I think I'm right in saying that the hospitality was sold out on most occasions last season, so there is clearly a demand. A suitably placed marquee= 150 extra premium paying customers.

I'm happy with these being temporary structures, if it means that bigger plans are being looked into in the meantime.
The bit I'm struggling with at the moment is how the sightlines will work - ensuring the East Stand not being in the way of the corner stands, and visa-versa. I imagine the corner temporary stands (if not being exactly the same height at the East Stand), will need to have a gap between, and slight forward of (and without the roof obscuring the view from), the East Stand.

If we do stay, and eventually redevelop The Mem, then the East (Dribuild) Stand really isn't fit for purpose, and not fit for being extended the length of the pitch.
It was well documented, when built by the rugby club, that they'd got the sightlines wrong, and it was too near the pitch. Even after the pitch was moved 1 metre away from the stand, you still can't quite see the near touchline from the seats. You can't see the near corner flags - if you're in either of the side blocks then the corner furthest away is more out of view.
Extending the East Stand would only make things worse.
If we stay at The Mem then surely the only way forward is to build a new East Stand in the car park (with proper sightlines!) and then move the pitch towards it once constructed.

I think it is likely the new stand will decrease the capacity as it will partially sit on the East Terrace (right where I have stood since 1996!) I wonder if they will let us fill the empty seats during a wet midweek game, whilst the rain drives in relentlessly on the prevailing wind? Would be better than hiding under the pasty hut roof I guess.
