...My view is that a striker, a decent one, will score regardless. The gulf between EFL and NL is much less now. I'd agree in general, but as we saw with Jamie White, being prolific at one level doesn't mean you'll continue in the same vein at the level above. Based on scoring record, it seemed odds on that he was going to be our no.1 marksman and not Matty Taylor. I don't know much about Godden, but his record shows he's only had a handful of appearances and no goals at L1 and Championship level with Scunthorpe. He has done pretty well around tier 5 and 6 and especially since leaving Scunthorpe to join Ebbsfleet and then Stevenage with a more consistent run of appearances. 51 goals in the last 2 seasons does show he knows where the back of the net is.

Did White really get a chance to show any different with us? From my recollection he was plagued by injuries. Obviously his subsequent career would suggest he wouldnt have made it for us, however ifs, buts, maybes... I think confidence plays a huge part, if your scoring goals, more follow. Which makes getting players in now allowing a full preseason to build on fitness and match sharpness really important in my opinion. Obviously there are financial considerations and restrictions on signing players earlier in the summer, however getting business done early seems a no brainer to me.

Obviously there are financial considerations and restrictions on signing players earlier in the summer, however getting business done early seems a no brainer to me. Who knows? I just remember at the time there was more forum inches devoted to Jamie White's signing than Matty Taylor and on paper White's record seemed more impressive. However, whether hampered by injury or not, it seemed pretty obvious even to the untrained eye that Jamie White was a long way short of being able to do the business for us, even in the Conference. DC getting shot of him so soon suggests that was his opinion as well. As DC often mentioned with Luke James, it took Matty Taylor some time to get off the mark, which supports your point about confidence. There seems no guarantee that a player making the step up a division, even if they've been free scoring, carries that confidence with them. Godden's confidence is probably sky high and we'll possibly get the chance to see whether he can continue scoring in L1.

White was a real disappointment as he'd already started scoring again for Salisbury following his injury. I could never understand why he looked so good for them but so out of sorts for us, even since leaving us his career's gone downhill fast.
As far as LJ he's never been a regular scorer and never really gets in positions to score, but didn't DC suggest in one interview he likes to play deep not up top?

Before my recent holiday we had a ,'Bloke in a Pub' story that we had an agreement to sign a player released by Southampton. Was that the usual nonsense or has there been any conclusion?

Hi guys, I don't post on here that often but there is an interesting 'rumour' that is worth sharing. Someone I know and works with the club has heard that we have had a bid accepted by Stevenage for Matthew Godden and we are now speaking with the player and trying to agree terms. Apparently he has two other options aswell as us, one from a league two club and one from another league one club. My source doesn't make up crap, however this is what he has so say heard from inside the club. Another rumour I know but I suppose we'll see in the weeks ahead! Have a bit of an update on this from what I was told from my source last night. We've basically put a very good offer on the table to Godden and he is now taking his time and weighing up all of his options before he makes a final decision. I'm told if he decides against us then we will pursue David Wheeler of Exeter. I know he's a right winger though but maybe DC will put him up top? I think next week will be very interesting.

Looks a tidy goal scorer more natural looking in front goal in a one on one situation than the snake as well, sign him immediately

Think it's great to speculate, but until it's official why bother?

Three other clubs now interested (Bury, Charlton and Rotherham).

Seeing rumours on social media that we won't match Godden's wage demands so we are no longer interested but my contact says he hasn't heard anything.
