If the forum is a democracy, then imo the mods should leave this thread alone. It will die a natural death if posters wish it to. As with all threads that cause controversy, no-one has to read it if they don't want to. Just my opinion. Maybe you could run a poll to see what the majority would like? I agree with you Ann. This forum has always moderated itself fairly well regardless of who the mods have been. The other forum banned Swissgas just for having differing view to the mods. I think he was reinstated after they realised that a sanitised forum is a boring place. Saying that I miss Basel and would love to hear his thoughts on B***** post Rovers. We cannot erase B***** from the clubs history nor should we try.

Barton isnt going to go away but he isnt Rovers problem now (except by association) so the thread should surely stay alive but move it to other chat. Bas came across as 100% Rovers and I am sure that he always backs the latest manager, Bas probably isnt interedted in Barton since he has left Rovers...the forum was better with someone like Bas but its the moderators forum so they make the rules.

Is he still banned? I thought maybe he just didn't want to be here any more but if he does then I'd say he should be given a reprieve.

For what it's worth I agree with Angas. I don't believe that content, whilst adhering to the rules of the forum, should be subject to any moderation at all

I wasn’t one of his fans from day 1 , but I do believe he has a right to say what he thinks , and I preferred Charlie n, Phil t , matts tiss than the current incumbents , pc correct panels The problem is 99% of folks are frightened to say what they think these days, he’s just saying what he thinks , Christ not a day goes by when my girl says you can’t say that dad , but I do , so I’m not a fan of his football wise , but I’ve no issue saying what he thinks , Christ things I’ve been called over the years , like water off a ducks back ,don’t loose a mins thought over it , never have Oh for the good old days

It was headline news on the bbc website. Difficult to miss unfortunately. I don't know about a breakdown but there's definitely something very wrong with the bloke. He should never have been inflicted on us and the sooner he disappears into oblivion the better. But that's not what he wants so we're stuck with hearing about the nonsense he spouts, and having him linked with Rovers. The solution is in his hands, not ours. How can he disappear into oblivion when people keep giving him oxygen? How can he disappear from the memories of Gasheads when people continually bring up the past? Why keep bumping this thread to the top now? While he was manager I ensured that this thread was regularly bumped to the top. Made me unpopular with many. But that thing has now gone. It was manager at BRFC for 975 painful days. We know what he did, we know how he behaved, we know what he said. At the merciful end, all but a small minority could see the despicable human being for what he was. I do not propose sweeping the disgrace of his appointment under the carpet. But it has been DONE TO DEATH. We do not need constant reminding. The less he is mentioned, the quicker the stench will leave. Someone suggested moving the thread. Someone 'liked' the idea. I agreed, and put it to the other Mods about what to do about it (bloody democracy again). An over-sensitive duck immediately took flight at the mere mention of it. It's a free country. A final decision has not been made. A few people don't like the idea of alleged 'censorship' or 'mood management'. If this 'censorship' is too much to bear then suggest they don't travel to Moscow or Pyongyang. Their poor bleeding hearts. We (the Mods - the people that give up their time and money to keep the Forum going) will take on board comments and we'll discuss what to do. (Not aimed at you Angas ). As ever I’m happy for you mods to decide. Worrying about JB certainly shouldn’t be taking up anyone’s time. Make a decision, stick to it and b***** the rest. 😉 Seems a timely reminder to say thank you to you mods, running this forum so we can enjoy (?) it. UTG!

Apart from Epping. My son and I have never recovered from the sight of him wearing shorts to away games in the middle of winter. A provocative disgrace

Its unfortunate, because I think he has every right, and even an obligation, to object to a trivial, dull and, in the grand scheme of things, unimportant middle-class agenda that is being insidiously and forcefully shoved down our throats at each and every opportunity. You refer to the 'good old days'. Worthwhile recalling that Enoch Powell was sacked for his infamous 'rivers of blood speech' in 1968. Similarly, South Africa was expelled from the Commonwealth in 1961, and anybody speaking out openly on behalf of apartheid would have been viewed as beyond the pale.Barton's comments on women commentators would also been viewed as unacceptable and beyond the pale in the 1970s, and I actually think they would have been even more strongly condemned back then. To put it more succinctly, 'freedom of speech' has not been an unquestioned feature of British life for a very long time. However, I would agree that it is becoming increasingly restricted and infringed upon.

Nice choice of phrase about someone speaking out about apartheid being viewed as 'beyond the pale', given that the pale was a geographically different apartheid. Nice!

However, I would agree that it is becoming increasingly restricted and infringed upon. Nice choice of phrase about someone speaking out about apartheid being viewed as 'beyond the pale', given that the pale was a geographically different apartheid. Nice! The point is simple - even in the 1960s, it was widely viewed as socially unacceptable to express Powell's views or to openly endorse apartheid. This was 60 years ago. So the idea that in the 'good old days', people could just say what they wanted is actually completely wrong. Ted Heath wouldn't have sacked Powell and the UK government wouldn't have supported the removal of South Africa if there wasn't at least substantial public opposition to both. I actually think that casually sexist comments were more likely to be picked up and shouted down in the 1970's - this was the decade when feminists like Germaine Greer and Andrea Dworkin held sway. For me, today's feminism seems to me to be quite conservative/liberal and middle-class, and focused on trivialities like the sex and heritage of football commentators and pundits while being willing to excuse things like the complete absence of women's rights in parts of the world on the grounds of cultural relativism. And yes, my initial comment was sarcasm, which I shouldn't need to point out.
