If the justice system concur with the title of this (currently) 130 page thread 'that Barton is unfit to manage Bristol Rovers' on finding him guilty as charged and punish him by issuing a custodial sentence there will be rejoicing and much merry making from those that have repeatedly made plain their misgivings of this appointment. The question I would put to those eager to see the demise of Barton and his exit from Bristol's oldest F.C. - who would be their ideal successor to JB? With the Haunted Wardrobe that is JRM and other genetically modified Tories heralding the return of a rouge as PM of the nation would a returnee be the answer in replacing a displaced rouge at BRFC? Too late for GC. Would Tis' be worth a 2nd chance? What about Ollie? For those firmly or not so firmly behind Mr Barton the conundrum is very different - should he receive a 12 month custodial sentence of which less than 6 months may be spent behind bars then would Mangan and Whelan take the reigns as caretakers? A sentence that would detain JB at Charlies pleasure for more than 12 months may require more detailed strategic planning. I'm sure there is a such risk assessment on a laptop somewhere. Andy Mangham and Glen Whelan eg,to keep things ticking over until JBs release. I don't think there will be a custodial sentence and anyway,JB will be found not guilty. Joe Barton is possibly the best Manager in Rovers history, despite the irreverent title of this thread. I’ll confess to being (on a purely football perspective) a JB convert but to even suggest that he is the best manager of BRFC is for the birds. Minimum requirement for me is a promotion to the second tier - that leaves three candidates, Tann, Megson and Francis. To be happy with mid table Division 3 just shows how far our expectations have fallen. Second thing in the Father Jack tick list is triumph against adversity . Candidates there are Francis (again), Darrell Clarke and (don’t laugh) Bobby Gould for keeping us up in the first Twerton season. Third is for team spirit, and bringing the team and fan base together. For me Barton does come into this area, along with Francis and Clarke. I’ve not mentioned Trollope, Ward or Williams (the best style of football I have ever seen Rovers play) yet. For me it is and always will be Gerry Francis , for what he achieved and achieving it at Twerton when we didn’t have a pot to piss in. JB may be knocking on the Top 5 door, but will need to make the play offs this year to even get close to Top 3.

If JB were to get say 200 hours of community service, maybe sweeping / cleaning the streets of litter etc, i wonder how many Gasheads would follow him around as his little helpers ? (all in jest of course, but feel free to add your name to list)

He has not got us to tier 2 even. I’d put those mangers who did, before him That's why I said "possibly" KP.

But tbh bas, it’s not even “possibly” is it? Perhaps in the future but not yet.

I will say we're playing some fantastic football under Joe and he is imo one of our best.

When or if he stops giving teams 10 game head starts then and gets some consistency then I wouldn’t begrudge him a place in the clubs history. Thing is, IF he does get the club into tier 2 then you can bet he will be offered other and better of clubs to manage

Aside from the three you mention, both Trollope/Lawrence (successive 11th places finishes in D2) and Ward (play off-final and 7th the following season) are well ahead of 'our Joey'. Coughlan's achievements should also not be overlooked, the manner of his departure notwithstanding. Ward's achievements followed relegation from what is now the championship with the worst ever goals conceded record (still stands, I believe), so he very much ticks your adversity box with bells added on.

Under Francis we were a long-ball side and Ward's side also had this reputation, although from memory I remember them playing some pretty good stuff. Ward's teams were also consistently top eight material. Let's judge Barton at the end of the season, not in October.

1..Would we want BRFC playing ok football, doing just enough to grind out results and amassing enough points to win promotion through the play-offs.
2..Or would we want attacking 60-40% possession, playing some superb stuff, but ending up with too many draws and falling short of the play-offs by 1 point.

So change it to Trollope/Lawrence and give Trollope joint credit for the 11th place finishes he achieved? To my mind, this is just below where we realistically be aiming to be (top 10 L2 side). Just like Lennon/McCartney, although Lawrence's solo career was much, much better (be honest, Lennon's and McCartney's post-Beatles output was pretty abysmal, wasn't it?)

For my money he may not be the best manager the gas has ever had (yet), but potentially he could be. I Don’t recall any coach putting together such a strong youthful technically gifted squad of players. He could virtually pick a totally different set of players every week ( oh he did just that the last two matches) the overall performance would be the same.
Another strength JB brings to the table is the positive influence he’s had on reshaping how the club was run, we were very much a ragbag tinpot outfit and had been for decades to where we find ourselves now so much.more professional in every department.
He is football nut and educates us the fans with his pearls of wisdom where he often thinks outside the box , from piss poor referees to top premier league clubs stockpiling players etc. He’s also not afraid to experiment, such as the Lincoln match which was as a one off ‘ absolutely barking.’ Was anyone worried - not in the slightest
All in all we are very fortunate to have him plying his trade at Bristol Rovers and I have absolutely no doubt he will get us ln the Championship if not this season then the next, finally we will be able to say - bring on the city! Then all you younguns can experience a Bristol Derby there is nothing that can compare - it’s better than a harem of women (or maybe not) but that’s how high the bar is! UTG

I think it's hard and actually unfair to compare to past teams and era's.
Especially Gerry Francis in late 80's, early 90's at Twerton.
Back then Oxford, Luton, Wimbledon and Oldham all got to the top flight. Oxford won a League Cup, Wimbledon won an FA Cup and got top 6 finishes in the top flight at that time in grounds not much bigger than Twerton.
Cambridge also came close to getting promoted to the Premier League in its inaugural season.
That just doesn't happen anymore.
If Joey gets us to The Championship, then he has to be right up there.
The Mem now is imo worse than Twerton was then in the Football landscape as times gone on.

Like my great friend Father Jack, I'm a Joey convert too and not solely for his managerial abilities. The guy makes me think about things differently and I genuinely hope for Georgia, the kids and his sake, that his wilder days are over.
He's not and never will be Darrell, who is my particular favourite Rovers manager ever. That said, his team plays football on a par with David Williams' teams and he has unified the matchday crowd like Darrell, so get a promotion to the second division like Gerry did and then, he's right up there.
