Nothing wrong with the majority of Gasheads allowing themselves to be carried away on a tide of emotion but surely it goes against the grain to gang up on anyone who chooses not to go with the flow ? I always considered Rovers supporters a good hearted bunch with a sense of fair play. Kind of reminds me of the piece Peter Grimes. They will not be silenced, those voices that cannot be drowned.

If people were as confident as they say they are there would be no need to try to drown out dissenting voices. It is only because the fragility of the situation is so obvious that some get very irritated and can’t resist lashing out.

I have now seen there is more tolerance on gaschat that here, never thought that would happen.

This thread shows exactly why so many dissenters no longer participate here. Dissent from the ever changing views of a clique of matchday drinking partners need not result in this gloating passive aggressive attempted bullying. You can revel in appointing a manager awaiting trial for smashing another manager's teeth in, and then rewarding said manager while now awaiting trial for kicking his wife's head in while Rovers manager, without this. Our manager was found to be not guilty of pushing another manager, so why keep harping on about it? Doing so is equally likely to put people off of posting, and so it goes on. I don’t drink with any posters on here, indeed I don’t know any of you personally, but would be more than happy to do so, whatever your views.

You could just keep the snideness in the pub and treat Gaheads online with whom you disagree with a little respect. It's up to you, of course. But spite towards online Gasheads seems rather to miss the point of Bristol Rovers Independent Fans Forum, and has got rid of quite a number of dissenters already. As for my chosen subject matter, I respond to BRFC's recent managerial announcement on a thread titled 'Joey Barton is unfit to manage Bristol Rovers'.

Sadly, JB seems to be your only chosen subject matter at the moment. Which is a shame, as I'm sure I remember you making good contributions to other topics in the past.

The timing of this is odd, to say the least.
I'm wondering if Wael's decision suggests he has some inside knowledge on the likely progress and outcome of the court case? He wouldn't give Barton a four-year contract unless he was very confident of a positive outcome? Even if there were reasonable grounds for dismissal, surely it would just be easier to avoid the possibility of further court action and just not hand out such a long contract?

I agree, I think that Wael must have had a heads up from a very good legal source as to the likely outcome of the case.

It might be worthwhile studying the wording of the statement. “Owner Wael Al-Qadi said: "I am extremely pleased Joe has decided to continue to lead the club forward. I am really excited to see him building this squad of talented and committed players. I wish him all the very best and this new deal hopefully shows him just how important he is to my vision for Bristol Rovers football club." Does the phrase “this new deal hopefully shows him just how important he is “ suggest Wael approached him and said “ Right Joe, here’s the deal, you are a vital asset for BRFC so I want to make absolutely sure you are with us for the next four years” ? Or does it suggest that it was actually JB who forced the issue ?

I do not believe this would be the first public expression of presidential confidence in the manager that the manager exerted himself to obtain. But whatever power the manager holds, the directors of the football club must remain responsible for managerial apppointments and contract extensions. Odd to offer a contract before each criminal trial rather than to suspend the manager until trial (and first to check on criminal proceedings before recruiting).

Remember Higgs and his watertight deal with Sainsbury, the advice that he would win a case against them.....

A manager that is committed to a fc - at least on paper - is a good selling point to potential new players etc.
For Joe,it shows the faith his Boss has in him. He is hoping to sign 6 more players this window.

Different people at the helm now though, I've got a bit more confidence in them.

To me, it suggests that Wael was very aware that other clubs had shown an interest in JB during the summer, and he wanted to reinforce with JB that he is seen as an integral part of our future, and progression for the next few years.

Even after the relative 'success' of last season, he is still only here because Wael did a Tammy Wynette and 'stood by his man'. JB has made his gratitude to Wael clear in return on numerous occasions. When the incident first hit the news, the arguments in favour of suspending Barton were far, far stronger than keeping him in position. Polls (including on this website) showed the vast majority of fans favoured suspension and this would have also been consistent with standard practice across the football world - allowing JB to continue coaching with two criminal charges looming over him was unprecedented, to the best of my knowledge. JB owes Wael big time, and is hardly in a position to be making demands.
