The question was a rhetorical one really but actually I've never found that answer very satisfying. After all he resigned - he wasn't sacked. So there must have been some kind of conversation about what was doable after that. As a fan I find it completely unacceptable that they decided to 'punt' on a promotion attempt at that point. Whatever the probability of success it's as close as we have come in 20 years. I find that unacceptable and I regret giving the club any money in the second half of last season because I think it was treating us as patsies during that time. It's something that I've become more, not less, angry about and the future success or failure of the BG project is neither here nor there for me. It was a proper 'what's the bloody point of bothering with any of it anymore?' moment for me. In that moment they treated their fans with contempt - I want my money back..... Well put Irish. Likewise, I am struggling to move on positively from it. On December 17th 2019 Martyn Starnes said, in relation to a replacement for Graham Coughlan, that he was looking for continuity and there was no mention of a new direction. At the very end of this interview he says that he has worked with three clubs who have been promoted to the Championship and he still thinks promotion is a possibility at Rovers. www.bristolrovers.co.uk/news/2019/december/martyn-starnes-press/

Graham Coughlan - Bristol Rovers Pld 56..W 25..D 18..L 13 = 44.64 Win Ratio - Mansfield Town Pld 24..W 4..D 9..L 14 = 14.81 Win Ratio.
On 28 October 2020, Mansfield Town confirmed they had parted ways with Coughlan, after a poor start to the season.

I'm with Irish, with this, the way that the inertia Wael inherited was allowed to stall and ridiculous losses were run up, all secured against the club's home. Add to that, whether it's be design or not, apart from shop staff I think that everybody I knew at the club as been shown the door, one by one, everyone has gone. It's real difficult to recognise this as the club I've supported for over 50 years. Nice one Wael.

Perhaps I am becoming more cynical in my elder years!. The BG/training ground/develop 'em project strategy of Rovers becoming a selling farm for young players also concerns me as this seems to be the 'priority', I understand we need cash to operate, but I just have a sneaky feeling that Rovers will be content to stay in L1/L2 and try to sell to make profit, churning out the young players that Garner's snapping up, proof I guess will be if we 'find ourselves' in a lofty league position, what happens next. I hear no War cry, or ambition from BG, just complaints about officials, for me he is not a leader or passionate motivator who's main aim in his Rovers life is promotion, it is clearly training ground and the development of youth. I had to stop watching his pre/post match interviews as they made me tense and angry, every question asked recieves a super lengthy waffle of a reply that you just have to wonder if he goes about his business the same way, how does he manage to get through a day's work. I am very positive about the Quarters training ground, this is a wonder to behold, and will certainly improve the team and make us far more attractive going forward. I also think this strengthens Wael's hand regarding any future ventures.

GC - the most unpopular successful manager we ever had! GC created a crap vibe for the majority, and our view of success is unfortunately skewed by the lack of it. At least we had some fun under Holloway and Clarke.

Short adjustment to Coughlan's style, then just enjoy the process of grinding teams down over 90 minutes, often with 10 players whilst Nichols stood around watching was was going on around him. Heck of a lot easier to engage with than what we are stuck with now, a self-obsessed narcissist who lost control of the team last season and always looks for someone to blame when things go wrong.

I think you have shared your views on GC as someone you admire and would like coaching your team and certainly I am very clear of your dislike of BG (and frankly your opinions of him are also far too personal, in my mind). I see some potential in the young playing squad, whether BG is the right man I certainly don't know as I'm also not convinced at this point. But in true Gas style I support the club. I even supported with GC at the helm, but I disliked it.

I see some potential in the young playing squad, whether BG is the right man I certainly don't know as I'm also not convinced at this point. But in true Gas style I support the club. I even supported with GC at the helm, but I disliked it. That’s about it, managers come, managers go but I (we?) support BRFC even when it’s poor. Blimey, I was at Yeovil in the noughties when our pub team rolled up and got thrashed 0-4 and at York in December 2012 when McGhee's masterplan involved defenders playing as attackers and we lost 1-4. But the fans still supported the club and we keep doing that. Mind you I seem to remember MCG getting stick that day. Not sure that managers in the past got the personal abuse that BG, and this week GC, have got. Views now aren’t confined to agree/disagree, should do this/shouldn’t do this, pick this player/ don’t pick this player. Nothing now is off limits and managers need a very thick skin to deal with it. On here it probably just stays the right line of acceptable imo. But we are all different and with that comes our own personal lines that we don’t cross. I’d disagree with some and feel that some comments are perhaps too personal and step outside the limits of acceptability. But that happens rarely and perhaps I come from a different time when tolerance levels of others were far higher than they are now. Perhaps! Me, I like the position GC got us to. I don’t think we’d have sustained that as the football wasn’t very good and as has been said we ground teams down. But I can’t remember us beating any team we shouldn’t have been beating except Ipswich. That’s the only one. Our record under GC against the top teams was as woeful as it has been under BG and under DC in the last year. Our football now gives me hope that we’re moving in the right direction. I hope BG is the right manager but that’s more about hope than expectation at the moment but give him time. I guess we’ll know by the season’s end and even then would Wael do anything? I don’t know. But I switch on to watch now with more hope than I did last season. Time will tell. Lets hope a win win at the weekend can revive us and make October a very good month. 😉 UTG!

Well put Irish. Likewise, I am struggling to move on positively from it. It's funny - I'm much more excited by the BG/training ground/develop 'em project Which isn't to say it'll work, but I think it's a big step forwards To be honest I share both sentiments to an extent;
1)I actually seem more in the positive camp than most about the current direction of the club and towards BG too. Although, I believe that he still has a great deal to prove and I completely understand why it will take a long time to win over many and he may still not do so. That's a hole he's dug for himself so I have little sympathy. But I am definitely in the cautiously optimistic camp at this point based on off field developments and the games I've watched so far this year.
On the other hand also......
2)I remain absolutely furious at the way we were treated as fans during the GC debacle and what followed. I normally agree with Swiss but not this time. I simply don't believe Starnes statement because it makes no sense in terms of what happened afterwards. A club looking for continuity does not appoint a manager with no experience, who has a completely different tactical approach and then give him the greenlight to turn over half the squad from a position where we were 4th in the League! It's just not a credible defence in my eyes. It's quite clear to me that BG was doing what he was hired to do and that had next to nothing to do with taking a full swing at promotion. The best that can be said is that we were still trying for promotion within a context of making other fundamental changes to the way we worked re; recruitment, training, tactics etc but I'm not sure I'm prepared to even be that generous. And I wasn't a very big fan of GC either. It's the principle that makes me very cross - you don't treat your fans like that.

Irish.
Swiss will most likely be along to confirm soon enough, but my feeling is that he was agreeing with you and him referencing what Starnes said was backing up your feeling that we were being treated poorly, namely by a statement being made which we can now see the club simply wasn't committed to. If they were then Garner would have been gone after half a dozen games and an old wise head would have been brought in to try to salvage our best chance of getting promoted to the 2nd tier for 3 decades.
And to those who say that we wouldn't have made it and that we were in a false position, just look who took that place in the end, Lightning Cheats FC, if they did it then I'm damn sure we could have.

That has always been my point, WW have less money and fans than us but they got in through the Covid back door, if there is such a thing. 1 pt

OK - with you. Sorry, maybe I misunderstood the intention. I think I remember Swiss previously arguing that there was no evidence of the board not going for it though - although maybe I'm wrong about that too.
