In saying that, we were right in the game and Joelinton's chance is probably the moment for us where we were either going to get back in or we didn't and unfortunately it didn't happen." On it feeling like one game too far: "It probably looked like that in our performance, it certainly didn't feel like that in our preparation, but we probably didn't have the energy we had on Saturday. A little bit flat in our performance, but it wasn't for the want of trying, the players were executing what they could but it wasn't quite there." On the players not holding anything back: "There never is from the group, they're such an honest group of players, they have attacked every game that we have asked them to. They've given a lot tonight again so it's a disappointing defeat, I think if we were at our best I still believe we could have won tonight so [it is] frustrating on our side."

Newcastle are also weighing up a January move for Bayer Leverkusen's £20m-rated Germany defender Jonathan Tah, 27. Newcastle and England striker Callum Wilson, 31, will be out for at least six weeks with a hamstring injury, while Magpies team-mate, 23-year-old Dutch defender Sven Botman, could be out for even longer because of a knee issue. Newcastle United will look to bring in a striker in January and could target VfB Stuttgart's 27-year-old Guinea forward Serhou Guirassy.

SATURDAY 25th NOVEMBER 2023 - PREMIER LEAGUE
Newcastle United 4 (Isak 13, Lascelles 60, Joelinton 62, Gordon 83) Chelsea 1
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/01EB/production/_131819400_gettyimages-1801832784.jpg Joelinton scored just 90 seconds after Jamaal Lascelles had restored Newcastle's leadSecond-half goals from Jamaal Lascelles, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon helped Newcastle return to winning ways in the Premier League with an emphatic victory over Chelsea at St James' Park. Lascelles' free header from Gordon's cross gave the Magpies a 2-1 lead on the hour mark, before Joelinton capitalised on a Thiago Silva error to double the hosts' advantage just 90 seconds later. And Gordon netted his fifth of the season with seven minutes remaining to put the seal on a comprehensive victory for Newcastle, who lost at Bournemouth in their previous match. Fit-again Alexander Isak had opened the scoring in an entertaining first half, sending a composed finish beyond Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez from 17-year-old Lewis Miley's threaded pass. Raheem Sterling's delightful free-kick restored parity 10 minutes later, but the visitors were architects of their own downfall in the second half as Lascelles and Joelinton put the game out of Chelsea's reach. They were reduced to 10 men when Reece James was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Gordon, who completed the scoring late on. Newcastle's fifth straight home league win moves them to within three points of fourth-placed Tottenham, while Chelsea stay on 16 points. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/500B/production/_131819402_gettyimages-1801828533.jpg

Thanks for all the NUFC reports bt. They need reinforcements no doubt. When I saw them at AFCB just before the international break they looked and played as if they were completely knackered. Too many top quality games, too many injuries. They had no forwards so I’m sure they will be linked with more players than most.

Newcastle 4-1 Chelsea: What Eddie Howe said..Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, speaking to Premier League Productions: "It was a real statement of character within the squad. We really asked the players to step up, and we really deserved to win. Big positives from today. "The leaders within the group set the tone - Jamaal Lascelles, Kieran Trippier, Matt Ritchie. They make sure we don't surrender. On Lewis Miley: "The biggest compliment I can give him is the pass for the first goal - an incredible decision, and he has the right temperament. A lot of young players would have wanted to shoot there. We have high hopes for him." "If you are disjointed and go away from your principles, you will be in trouble. We try to be us." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/2cd1/live/ddeb3780-8bb7-11ee-b2a6-3748038c2464.jpgAlan Shearer, former England and Newcastle striker on BBC Radio 5 Live:
"Chelsea were terrible in the second half. I think Newcastle made them play terrible by the way they pressed. "Anthony Gordon seems to be really enjoying his time in Newcastle and thought he was really great and caused James loads of problems. Reece James got frustrated and that's what led to him being sent off."

TUESDAY 28th NOVEMBER 2023 - CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - GROUP F
Paris Saint Germain 1 (Mbappe 90+8) Newcastle United 1 (Isak 24)
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/19F4/production/_131844660_kylianmbappe.jpg Kylian Mbappe converted the equalising penalty in the 98th minuteKylian Mbappe scored a controversial late penalty to deny Newcastle an impressive win at Parc des Princes but the draw keeps the visitors in the fight to reach the Champions League knockout stages. The spot-kick was awarded after review by the video assistant referee, with referee Szymon Marciniak consulting the pitchside monitor before ruling Tino Livramento had handled the ball inside the box when blocking a cross. It was a cruel blow for Eddie Howe's side, who had looked on course to secure a hugely impressive win after Aleksander Isak struck in the first half when Miguel Almiron's effort had been pushed to the striker's feet. Newcastle then defended with everything they had to keep out PSG and Nick Pope made a superb save from close range to deny first Bradley Barcola and then Kylian Mbappe, who drove the rebound just wide. But the visitors' resolve was broken deep in stoppage time when PSG were awarded the penalty, from which Mbappe made no mistake. The result means Newcastle are third in Group F, two points behind second-placed PSG. Eddie Howe's side now need to beat AC Milan in their final group game and hope already qualified Borussia Dortmund get a result against PSG. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/14E8C/production/_131844658_tinolivramento.jpgTino Livramento was adjudged to have handled the ball when blocking a crossThe finish to this game will have been devastating for Newcastle after they had put in a brilliant display of fight and bravery to keep out the hosts for 97 minutes. Howe's side had arrived in Paris impacted by a lengthy injury list as they named two goalkeepers on their bench alongside four teenagers. But those who played gave everything and more as they came within seconds of another huge result on their Champions League return. They rode their luck at times, with Mbappe and Barcola both missing some big opportunities, and it looked like it was going to be Newcastle's night. But in the last minute of eight added on in stoppage time, Ousmane Dembele's cross struck the chest of Livramento - who had been excellent throughout - and the ball bounced up onto his arm. Referee Marciniak had earlier dismissed a similar penalty claim for an Anthony Gordon challenge inside the box, but this time decided to award the spot-kick as Mbappe rescued his side. But the decision seemed harsh on Newcastle and the result means progress to the last 16 is now not in their hands.

Paris St-Germain 1-1 Newcastle: Why was controversial late penalty given ?
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/36E6/production/_131845041_eddiehowe.jpg Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was unhappy with the decision to award the penaltyAlly McCoist branded it a "disgrace", while Jermaine Jenas said Newcastle were "robbed" as a controversial late penalty decision denied Eddie Howe's side a memorable victory at Paris St-Germain. Aleksander Isak's first-half goal in Tuesday's Champions League tie had looked set to stun the hosts, as missed chances and some big saves from Nick Pope gave the visiting fans hope that their side were going to complete a double over the French champions in Group F. But, in the eighth minute of stoppage time, Ousmane Dembele's cross appeared to strike Tino Livramento's body and the ball bounced up on to his arm. After referee Szymon Marciniak reviewed the incident on the pitchside monitor, he awarded a spot-kick, which Kylian Mbappe duly despatched to secure a 1-1 draw. "What is Livramento meant to do with his arms? Wrap them round his back? I'm fuming," former Newcastle midfielder Jenas said on TNT Sports. "The players threw everything at it and it should have been one of those historic wins. Newcastle have been robbed." McCoist, commentating on the game for TNT, added: "That is absolutely never a penalty. If we're giving a penalty for that, then it is a disgrace." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/8506/production/_131845043_tinolivramento.jpgThe game was being officiated by one of the world's best referees, with Marciniak having been in the middle for the 2022 World Cup final between Argentina and France; he also took charge of June's Champions League final between Manchester City and Inter Milan. He had earlier waved away PSG appeals for a penalty after Anthony Gordon had appeared to foul Achraf Hakimi inside the box, and he again initially dismissed calls from PSG players for a spot-kick following the Livramento incident. But, after being urged by the video assistant referee to check the monitor, he felt there was enough there to give the hosts the 98th-minute penalty. "The referee is the best in the business and was great for the majority of the night," added McCoist. "It comes off his chest and hits his left elbow... that's absolutely never a penalty. The whole night will be remembered for that decision." Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer posted on X: "A superb battling away performance from every single player. Shouldn't be spoilt by a disgusting decision." What does the handball law say?According to the laws of the game, when deciding a handball decision in a game, referees have three key considerations: Whether it is a "deliberate action" by the player - ie have they moved their arm towards the ball? The proximity of the player from the ball and the speed it hits them on the arm/hand; If the the hand or arm is in "an unnatural position", - ie away from the body In the case of the Livramento handball, the referee deemed that even if it was not deliberate and the Newcastle defender was unable to react quickly enough, his arm was in an unnatural position.

Here are some of your comments:Geoff: The lads were fantastic and they’re starting to become the entertainers that we have missed since the Keegan era! Pope was outstanding, Tino was brilliant, Miley is miles ahead of his age and the whole game was heart-stopping entertainment. The ref was poor and it was never ever a penalty. Mbappe isn’t fit to tie Isak's boots! David: We wanted a team who give it everything and care like we do as supporters. We have that team and we have that manager. I couldn’t be prouder of the players. The good times are coming. Remember that. Ken: Great team performance and I am so sad for the lads who gave their all. I just wish referees would stand up to VAR - you can guarantee when instructed to view the screen replay they will feel an obligation to agree with VAR regardless of their original decision. I can’t recall a referee viewing the screen and saying: "No, my opinion was correct"! David: Giant performance. Incredible bad luck with the penalty that never was. The support was fantastic as always! Eleven magnificent players who ran and worked for each other and no substitutes at all - PSG used all theirs.. Keith: Amazing from the boys. They looked spirited and played with a lot of confidence and happiness and were robbed by a disgraceful decision. But we can still get to the knockouts which will be on the agenda. Kevin: Superb gutsy performance by the Toon. Deserved a win and should have won the game. Never a penalty. Appalling decision by the referee.

Nick Pope: Newcastle United goalkeeper suffers suspected dislocated shoulder..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1843E/production/_131909399_nickpope2.jpg Nick Pope has been capped 10 times by EnglandNewcastle United and England goalkeeper Nick Pope suffered a suspected dislocated shoulder during the 1-0 win over Manchester United on Saturday. The 31-year-old injured himself diving for a shot during the second half and had to be replaced by Martin Dubravka. He joins an already substantial Magpies injury list, with striker Callum Wilson and defender Dan Burn among those out. "I don't know what the future holds for Nick, whether he'll need an operation or not," Howe told BBC Sport. "It looks bad. It looks like a dislocation of his shoulder, which he has done before. He had it operated on and came back successfully. "We'll get it checked out and fingers crossed he's back soon." Pope has made 62 appearances since joining Newcastle from Burnley in the summer of 2022, playing in all 14 of their Premier League games so far this season. "It will be a massive blow for us if he is ruled out for any length of time," Howe added on TNT Sports. "It looked really innocuous, but that is usually the way and they are normally the more serious ones. "You could see he was in distress and it looked like he dislocated his shoulder just diving."

Nick Pope's England team-mate Aaron Ramsdale would also consider a move to Newcastle, but the Magpies are reluctant to meet Arsenal's £50m valuation of the 25-year-old. Nick Pope: Newcastle goalkeeper requires shoulder surgery and faces four months out..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1787D/production/_131918369_gettyimages-1827503223.jpg Pope will miss Newcastle's important Champions League game against AC MilanNewcastle United and England goalkeeper Nick Pope requires shoulder surgery and is expected to be out for four months. The 31-year-old dislocated his shoulder when he dived to make a save during the closing stages of Newcastle's 1-0 win over Manchester United on Saturday. Manager Eddie Howe said there is "still a chance" Pope could return before next summer's European Championships. "He's naturally down because we've got huge games coming up and he's got the Euros ahead of him," Howe said. "We're thinking of him because it's another strange injury for us. There's no doubt he needs an operation so he will be out for a period of time, we think around four months." Pope, who joined Newcastle for an undisclosed fee in June 2022, joins striker Callum Wilson, winger Harvey Barnes, midfielders Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock, and defenders Sven Botman and Dan Burn among the club's injury concerns. The former Burnley goalkeeper had played every minute of Newcastle's Premier League and Champions League campaigns this season. But he had to be replaced by Slovakia international Martin Dubravka after 86 minutes at St James' Park having been unable to continue. Following his injury it was reported that Newcastle could use the January transfer window to replace Pope, with former Manchester United goalkeeper and current free agent David de Gea said to be interested in a move. "I've seen a lot of media headlines regarding goalkeepers and other players," Howe said. "We have not made any enquiries. If we were to recruit now we'd be recruiting in every area on the pitch. It's a chance for the other keepers to consolidate their positions." This season Pope has kept five Premier League clean sheets - the joint-most alongside Crystal Palace goalkeeper Sam Johnston and Manchester United's Andre Onana. The injury is a significant blow to Newcastle as they aim to continue making progress in Europe this season and once again make the Premier League's top four. But it is also damaging to Pope's chances of regaining his place in Gareth Southgate's England squad before Euro 2024 next summer, having been overlooked since May. Pope has been capped 10 times by England. "We are at the stage of the season where there are so many huge games coming up," added Howe. "He's got the Euros ahead of him as well, which he was determined to try to be involved in, and there is still a chance of that for him. "But I think his main determination is to come back for us. You never know what situation we will be in at that stage of the season." Speaking on the Footballer's Football Podcast, Newcastle team-mate Wilson said Pope would be "a massive loss no matter how long he's out". "He's single-handedly kept us in matches this season," Wilson added. "He's that difference at the back, but that's not to say that our other goalkeepers can't step up and now it's their opportunity to shine."
