ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/baa6/live/75ac4640-49a5-11ee-9b58-cb80889117a8.jpgWe asked for your views on Sunday's game between West Ham and Newcastle.
Here are some of your comments:Steve: Happy with a point, a fair result in the end. We could have easily gone 3-1 up, but also 3-2 down at the death. Pope's decision-making is a worry at times, although he's a great shot stopper. Bruno could have easily seen a red card in the first half. Any point away from home is a good one, and West Ham are a really good side. Paul: A point is a point, but after fighting back into a winning position, to lose two points in the last few minutes is annoying. But hey ho, we'll just keep moving forward. The players have to know exactly when it's time to defend a lead in the crucial final minutes. Chris: I surmise tiredness from midweek took a toll and was always going to. But it's never good to concede a goal that late on and Bruno needs to tone down the overly-physical side of his game. He's lucky he's not on domestic and European suspensions. Emgee: Surely Livramento deserves a run out after his 10/10 performance in the Carabao Cup? Perhaps the result may have been different if he had been given a run out in the last 20 minutes?

Nicolo Zaniolo and Sandro Tonali leave Italy camp over investigation..

The Italian football federation (FIGC) said the players were not in the right "condition" to participate in Italy's two upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers. The FIGC has not specified what the investigation concerns, but Italian news agency ANSA reports it relates to an illegal betting probe. The news comes a day after FIGC prosecutors announced an investigation into 22-year-old Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli, who is alleged to have used a variety of identities to place bets on illegal websites. Ex-Milan midfielder Tonali, 23, and former Roma player Zaniolo, 24, were informed of the probe on Thursday by prosecutors from Turin at Italy's Coverciano training centre. "Regardless of the nature of the investigative order, given that in this situation the two players are not in the right condition to face the commitments of the coming days, the federation has decided [...] to allow them to return to their respective clubs," the FIGC said. The midfield pair have returned to their Premier League clubs. Italy host Malta on Saturday before travelling to face England on Wednesday in Group C. The Azzurri are second in the table, six points behind leaders England. The Euro 2020 winners are level with Ukraine and North Macedonia on seven points, having played one game fewer.

Sandro Tonali: Newcastle confirm midfielder is being investigated over alleged betting activity..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/07AE/production/_131466910_sandrotonali.jpg Tonali has made seven Premier League appearances for NewcastleNewcastle United have confirmed midfielder Sandro Tonali is being investigated by the Italian Prosecutor's Office and the Italian football federation in relation to alleged illegal betting activity. The 23-year-old was recently withdrawn from Italy's training camp. Newcastle say Tonali is co-operating with the enquiry. "He and his family will continue to receive the club's full support," the club added in a statement. "Due to this ongoing process, Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to offer further comment at this time." Tonali and Aston Villa's Nicolo Zaniolo recently left Italy's training camp for Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and England after being told they were involved in an investigation by Italian prosecutors. Tonali, who has been capped 15 times by Italy, joined Newcastle from Milan in July for £55m. On Tuesday, Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli was given a seven-month suspension by the Italian football federation (FIGC) for breaching betting rules. Fagioli had five months of a one-year ban suspended and was fined 12,500 euros (£10,848). He also agreed to a therapy plan of at least six months to tackle his gambling problem. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/13C46/production/_131466908_tonali.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/A674/production/_131521624_k.pngNewcastle United could reignite their interest in Manchester City and England midfielder Kalvin Phillips, 27, if they decide to bring in a short-term signing to cover the expected absence of Italy international Sandro Tonali. Other midfielders on Newcastle's radar to replace Tonali, who is facing a ban for breaking betting rules, include Manchester United and Scotland's Scott McTominay, 26, Everton and Belgium's Amadou Onana, 22, and Fulham and Portugal's Joao Palhinha, 28. Newcastle's Tonali, 23, is facing a 10-month ban, which would cause him to miss the rest of the season and Euro 2024 - should Italy qualify - after investigations into alleged betting offences. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/620c/live/2eb3a5a0-7266-11ee-a503-4588075e3427.jpg

In the second half we were a lot better and unfortunately the ball would not go in. "The intention was there but we're up against elite teams. You make half a mistake and get punished. "We grew into the game in the second half with the chances we created and the woodwork denied us. Now we have to do it the hard way in the group. "It is going to be difficult, but we're in the Champions League. Nothing comes easy. You know you're going to have to win in some tough places. Now we need to dust ourselves down and be ready for next week. "We need to sit down and analyse the game. When you play a team so quickly again we need to work out how we adjust and see if we can go there and get a result. "I don't think we deserved to lose today." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/10/26/0fb5316a-4236-4430-b49e-6e0df6e0f8cc.jpgManager Eddie Howe says losing Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak to injury in Newcastle United's defeat against Borussia Dortmund is a "big blow". Striker Isak and midfielder Murphy both had to be substituted because of injury. "Jacob came off with what looks like a serious injury," Howe told TNT Sports. "We've got a small squad as is it. That's probably the most disappointing thing of the night. "It looks like a recurrence of his Isak's groin problem and it's a big blow. Jacob's looks serious, potentially a dislocation of his shoulder." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/10/26/5bc1a36c-5ba4-48e3-a3b6-d18cf8c850e4.jpgNewcastle's all-time record goalscorer Alan Shearer praised Borussia Dortmund's game plan after they "frustrated" Eddie Howe's side to leave St James' Park with a 1-0 win on Wednesday. "With the last six or seven weeks, the form Newcastle have been in, the number of goals they've been scoring, how they've been getting into the final third, how quick they've been moving that ball particularly from back to front - we were all expecting that (against Borussia Dortmund)," he told the Football Daily podcast. "It never really quite happened and they could never get a foot in the game because Dortmund didn't allow them. Dortmund frustrated them and when they had the ball they were a threat. "Dortmund played high-risk football in that first half - when they won the ball they were prepared to commit so many men forward in the hope they would get something out of it, they certainly did that. "Then they sat deeper in the second half and frustrated Newcastle, got men behind the ball and didn't leave spaces. "In the end it's probably a fair result. I know Newcastle were unlucky when they hit the bar and the post but I think defensively Dortmund were excellent and they played the game and the crowd really well."

Here are some of your comments:Joe: Poorest match for Trippier in a Newcastle shirt. I lost count of the amount of poor free-kicks and corners. No coincidence that the best free-kick was the only one he didn't take. Dortmund were also very organised and more experienced. Learn from this and move on to the next. David: Thought we deserved a point out of it, but sometimes it just does not go in. We will get back up and dust ourselves off and get back at it! Henry: How Almiron wasn't awarded a penalty in the first half, I will never know. Missed chances are the thing that really cost us though and in a group against three of Europe's elite, you need to take them, especially at home. Ian: I thought Newcastle played OK, not their usual selves at home. We only came to life late in the second half although Gordon was a menace again. Shame Isak went off so early, hope it's not a bad one. Good to see Willock back again but would have maybe brought him on a little earlier. Nonetheless not the end of the world, we go again on Saturday.

Borussia Dortmund team bus receives a parking ticket after stopping by the side of the road in Newcastle, after the German side beat the Magpies in the Champions League.i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/10/27/07/77068535-12678953-image-m-27_1698388216872.jpgFootage has emerged of the Borussia Dortmund team bus being given a parking ticket during its time in Newcastle for the club's Champions League clash with the Magpies. But their trip did not go completely smoothly, as a video posted on social media on Thursday afternoon showed a parking attendant putting a ticket on the front of the team bus after it had stopped by the side of the road and taken up several parking spaces. The ticket was handed out in the pouring rain, but there was no sympathy shown by the attendant as they placed the ticket on the front windscreen.

The Magpies are exploring the possibility of reducing Tonali's wages. Newcastle are also considering Manchester United's Scotland international Scott McTominay, 26, and Manchester City's England midfielder Kalvin Phillips, 27. Newcastle are the latest Premier League club to consider a move for Inter Milan's Federico Dimarco, with the 25-year-old Italy defender also interesting Chelsea and Manchester United.

WEDNESDAY 1st NOVEMBER 2023 - EFL CUP - FOURTH ROUND...By Simon Stone, BBC Sport at Old Trafford
Manchester United 0 Newcastle United 3 (Almiron 28, Hall 36, Willock 60)
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/D565/production/_131592645_gettyimages-1769426309.jpg Newcastle celebrated a brilliant win at Old Trafford as they knocked Manchester United out of the EFL CupNewcastle United claimed their second Old Trafford victory over Manchester United since 1972 to avenge their Carabao Cup final defeat at Wembley and pile the pressure on home manager Erik ten Hag. First-half goals from substitute Miguel Almiron and Lewis Hall, his first for the club, were followed up by a solo effort from Joe Willock on the hour to give Newcastle their biggest away win over their hosts in 97 years as they cruised into the quarter-finals. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/11/1/f9da8543-4ff4-43aa-aa59-59c08d93a0ea.jpgLewis HallIt was another desperate day for Manchester United and Ten Hag, who have lost eight of their opening 15 games for the first time since the 1962-63 season. Coming just three days after they suffered another three-goal home humiliation at the hands of Manchester City, the home side's weaknesses were again cruelly exposed. Diogo Dalot was replaced at half-time following his failure to track Almiron's right-wing burst for the opener. Returning Brazilian midfielder Casemiro did not re-appear for the second-half either with Ten Hag evidently unimpressed by the former Real Madrid man. Hall struck a fine second as he met Harry Maguire's headed clearance with a first-time volley. Willock's effort emulate Hall's by finding the bottom corner after he had been allowed to run 30 yards unchecked before shooting after Sofyan Amrabat had lost possession on the halfway line. In a week where the size of their kit has been questioned, Manchester United's players could have done with shirts big enough to cover their heads as, for the second game running, they were booed off at the end of both halves. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/11/1/9f552d0b-1e88-4f10-9617-2111544a42ed.jpgMatt Targett could barely walk as he was coming off the pitch.Manchester United's collapse in form since they beat Newcastle at Wembley in February to end a near six-year trophy drought has been stunning. Ten Hag lost six of his first 40 games in charge up to that EFL Cup final success. They have lost 13 of 36 since. As was the case with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer two seasons ago, the downturn has been totally unexpected given his side finished third last season and reached the FA Cup final in addition to their trophy success. Ten Hag has spent in excess of £350m over three transfer windows. Five of his signings started the game and six finished it. None emerged with any real credit, although it could be argued goalkeeper Andre Onana was blameless for all three Newcastle goals. Casemiro before the break and Amrabat after it failed to plug gaps in midfield. Once again Mason Mount was anonymous. The home side's best chance was squandered when Anthony Martial appeared to pull out of a header, despite being barely six yards out in the centre of the goal, when he seemed to hear a call from Mount behind him. Mount failed to control and the opportunity disappeared. Not that the issues enveloping Old Trafford are any concern of Newcastle, whose fans revelled in their opponents' discomfort, chanting 'You'll be sacked in the morning' and taunting over the number of empty red seats on show from fans leaving well before the final whistle. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1E95/production/_131592870_gettyimages-1769358297.jpgMiguel Almiron came on for the injured Matt Targett and scored Newcastle's openerThe game could not have got off to a worse start for the visitors. With five senior players out injured, plus Sandro Tonali ruled out for 10 months due to his gambling ban, Newcastle could ill afford any more personnel issues. But after just two minutes Matt Targett went down with what seemed to be a pretty severe hamstring injury on the basis he could barely walk off the pitch such was the pain he was in. Continuing was clearly out of the question and, as the English season heads towards its most congested point, Howe will now be fearing he will be without the services of Targett for a while. At that point, which his options so limited, Howe must have feared the worst. Instead, Almiron broke the deadlock, racing onto Tino Livramento's cross-field pass to set Newcastle on their way to a memorable and thoroughly deserved victory. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/11/1/4140db6f-be04-4f35-89b6-1fcd4c323d7e.jpg It is a fantastic finish from Joe Willock, Erik Ten Hag needs to motivate his players.

'We hope to go one better than last season'..FT: Manchester United 0-3 Newcastle United
ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/11/1/b45961c4-6d3d-4e0d-afff-ded685944ac7.jpg
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a very good performance from us. The mentality was brilliant. We had injuries and picked one up early. It was a great response." Players returning: "Emile Krafth coming back after such a long absence. He was committed with Paul Dummett. Willock was brilliant and Livramento." Game plan: "Without the players committing to what we want, we've got no chance. This is a really tough place to come to score the goals we did at the time we did." Busy schedule: "We hope the draw is kinder to us! I don't think there are any easy games in the quarter-finals. We hope to go one better than last season. You can't go too far away. We return to the Premier League with Arsenal. I know we have a tough schedule ahead and we look forward to it." On fans: "Delighted for the fans. With the journey, we had to respond and reward them."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/1440/cpsprodpb/18CE/production/_131605360_newcastleunited.jpgNewcastle manager Eddie Howe has spoken to the media before their game on Saturday: Newcastle v Arsenal - 5.30pm - "Arsenal last year, it speaks for itself what they achieved. "I think they have moved on from last year, mentally moved on and stepped it up. They are unbeaten, it is a really big test of our credentials. "We are going to have to find ways to make it very difficult for them but we are looking forward to the game." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/11/3/0870c04e-ab57-4f83-a0b7-3d4ed648f5c5.jpgEddie Howe on Matt Targett's injury after he came off early against Manchester United in midweek: "It doesn’t look good. He is having his scan today so we will know more today. When you have a hamstring injury you fear the worst. It is a real blow to lose him - he is a top player." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/11/3/d682c5ee-c900-43b1-831f-724bf4175ef4.jpgOn Joe Willock after he scored in the midweek win at Manchester United, Eddie Howe added: "I think Joe deserves a lot of credit for his performance because his athleticism, his speed and his general game was there after a long absence. He was making runs from the first minute. He is a huge player for us, I am so glad he scored. That would have done him the world of good." And finally from Eddie Howe, the Newcastle manager had this to say on his side's EFL Cup win at Manchester United: "It was great to be able to give everyone an opportunity and I thought they responded magnificently. "It was a brilliant team effort. I thought the spirit, determination and collective mindset was at the highest level. "We are in a good place mentally after the win. The whole squad will be lifted by that performance."

TUESDAY 7th NOVEMBER 2023 - CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - GROUP F
Borussia Dortmund 2 (Füllkrug 26, Brandt 79) Newcastle United 0
ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/401b/live/14d883d0-7a45-11ee-a503-4588075e3427.png
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/91E0/production/_131644373_gettyimages-1780539949.jpg Julian Brandt scored his fifth Champions League goal in his 51st appearance in the competitionNewcastle's hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League were dented as they fell to defeat against Borussia Dortmund. Niclas Fullkrug opened the scoring for the hosts midway through the first half and Julian Brandt added a second from a superb counter attack late on as the Germans completed a Group F double over their English opponents. Newcastle's best chance fell to Joelinton just after the break, but the midfielder headed Tino Livramento's cross wide from five yards out. The Brazil international's effort was a rare clear sight at goal for Newcastle, with Edin Terzic's Dortmund side having controlled much of the first period. The hosts enjoyed the better opportunities despite a much-improved second-half display from the injury-hit visitors. "We weren't at our best today," said Newcastle manager Eddie Howe. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/43C0/production/_131644371_gettyimages-1780539967.jpg"The intensity and quality of our normal game was missing. We still had our moments and Joelinton's header is probably the key moment in the game from our perspective. He would back himself to score that if it came in again." The game was also subject to a short stoppage after the interval as fake golden bars and other objects were thrown onto the pitch from the 'Yellow Wall', part of a protest against Uefa's proposed Champions League reforms, with one banner reading 'You don't care about the sport - all you care about is money.' Newcastle's return to Europe's elite competition began in fine fashion with a draw away at AC Milan before they were thrashed by Paris St-Germain on Tyneside. However, they now face an uphill challenge to qualify for the knockout rounds, with Dortmund's double victory over Eddie Howe's men moving them three points clear of Newcastle, who travel to PSG in their penultimate group match.

Callum Wilson: Newcastle United face anxious wait over forward's fitness..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/15FC6/production/_131645009_gettyimages-1780443843.jpg Callum Wilson has spent 207 days out injured since 2019-20 with hamstring injuries (source transfermarkt)Newcastle face an anxious wait over the fitness of Callum Wilson, who went off at half-time in their Champions League loss at Borussia Dortmund. The striker, 31, has scored seven goals in 10 Premier League appearances for Newcastle this term. However, boss Eddie Howe withdrew him at the break in Germany due to "tightness in his hamstring." Newcastle's other main striker Alexander Isak is also sidelined with a groin problem. "We are really stretched at the moment," said Howe who went on to say that it was "too early to know" the full extent of Wilson's problem. Alongside Isak, the Magpies are currently without the likes of the injured Harvey Barnes, Sven Botman, Jacob Murphy, Elliot Anderson, Matt Targett and Dan Burn. Big-money summer signing Sandro Tonali is also serving a 10-month ban for breaching betting rules. They travel to Bournemouth in the English top flight on Saturday, 5.30pm.
