This morning, I had a chat with an x member of Rovers staff.
1.On Graham Coughlans departure. Confidently and without hesitation I was told the Board told GC 4 players were not to be played past a number of games that would trigger a years extension to their Rovers employment.Absolutely handicapping the man at a time when support could have seen us go up. The Stags offered him over double what Rovers were paying g him.
I asked why Mildenhall was'nt selected for so many 5th tier games, when clearly Will Puddy was'nt up to it. DC was worried that if SM played again,it would trigger another year on his Gas deal and if we would of stayed 5th tier, the saving on allowing SM to go could of meant 4 new 5th tier players. At Wembley this is why WP played, even though he was injured and taking pain killer injections.DC cracked and gambled for the penalty showdown and after Wills performance who can blame him.
Matt Taylor was paid a fortune over his City deal.Lansdown loves putting one across Rovers.
WAQ.He persuaded his family that Rovers wouldn't cost so much, theirs money there. His Dad and older brother wanted profit.A budget of £6000000 was spoken of. Once it was clear there was no profit the training ground and UWE were finished.
City will take the big majority of new young Bristol support. As we all know.
DC was told he would get £1000000 more to deal with our first season back in the 3rd tier.Just before the transfer window started,WAQ told DC the cash isn't there.DC asked how can I entice the players I'm after to come to Rovers then? He was told to promote the training ground.Useless board.Useless.
We are surely 3rd tier at best. Hurrah,we've reached our potential.

Criticism of our owner is not allowed and is sure to attract the displeasure of a certain poster. There are some national league teams with bigger budgets than £600k

I wonder who? from memory, he didn't really play top-earning Bennett so not him. And it won't be JCH because they'd want him to extend I'm guessing Rodders, Sercs, Upson and THD?

I'd be interested in that person's view tho Depending on which October, what year,my 'contact' may not know. Not working for Rovers now and I don't know how long been gone. I'm confident what I have been told is pretty well reliable.

If only we'd know the virus was coming. That's sorted out players not being played too many times.

Never ceases to amaze me how clubs let players/agents get an x games equals contract extension/offer clause in a contract given the nature of football finances ,the amount of managers that get sacked etc and the number of players available every summer

The appearance triggered contracts have always caused problems. Remember Bradley Allen and Ali Gibb?
Ian Atkins was right when he said that it's not the clause that is the problem it's the number of games that it gets triggered at.

I'm not knocking free markets btw, we all pretty much want those systems. When Fergus McCann took over at Celtic he was vilified by fans as seemingly sitting back and doing nothing while Rangers threw whatever money they had - and lot's they didn't have either- at becoming a world force. We all know how that ended and now Fergus is seen as Celtic's saviour. Over the river, Lansdown, despite his massive investments, has still been criticised, mostly for his loyalty to Johnson and his refusal to splash even more cash than he already has, and I have a horrible feeling how that one will end . The question is - as it is in pretty much every competitive market- is do you get involved in being somewhat reckless with the cash just because your competitors are doing it. Or do you have the nous, time and sufficient funds to show a bit of resolve and play the long game. There are other types of owners of course, those who get given some pocket money to get involved at a club that seemingly has the potential to progress and when that potential disappears have no idea how to get out of the mess they find themselves in.

I can kind of understand if you sign a bloke for 6 months in January and he plays x no. of games he might get an extension, but once you give a bloke a job for a year or two or 3, I don't see the need. It seems the sort of thing in a contract that can be forgotten or is just lazy so a club doesn't have to do a negotiation later down the line

Good point that seems to cover the majority of owners in League 1 & 2 (including Bristol Rovers FC). Some notable exceptions - Accrington, Wimbledon, Exeter City etc... The latter three had sustainable business models pre-Covid19. They'll survive. Not sure about how many others will...
