Update. Dortmund, Koln, Frankfurt and Union are all being streamed on Skybet (probably Bet365 as well)... You probably just need a login. Union 4/11 to win and 1/8 for a top 4 finish. But I am still nervous. Very nervous.

And good luck Mrs V Smegma with Unterhashing vs Energie Cottbus. 2 sides with Bundesliga experience battling for a place in Liga (tier 3). The rules for who gets promoted from the 5 Regionaliga divisions to Liga with only 4 places seems to be a somewhat shifting landscape. In fact Energie Cottbus were the last side to represent the 'old' East Germany in the Bundesliga (2008-9) before the rise of Union Berlin (first season in top tier 2019-20). RB Leipzig don't count. f**k 'em.

HT Union 0 Bremen 0, FFT 0 Freiburg 1. Union dominant but can't stick the ball away. Still 1/2 to win but definitely nail-biting stuff. Dortmund choked and 0-2 down, Bayern 1-0 up at Cologne... title goes to Bayern as it stands. Union to the Europa, Freiburg to Champions League as it stands. Yikes.

Phew. That was stressful. Union winner at around 80 mins. Frankfurt then stuck 2 in to beat Freiburg 2-1. Dortmund only drew against out of form Mainz and Bayern nick the title with an 89th minute winner against Cologne. So when Sky claim the permiers**te is the best, most competitive, entertaining league in the world... I would take that with a pinch of salt. A very large one. Eisern Union. Und Niemals Vergessen Eisern Union. I'm off to the pub for ein bier oder zwei...

Union Berlin - The only former East German side currently in the Bundesliga. The only former East German side to have qualified for Europe since unification: Europa Conference 2021-22 Europa League 2022-23 Champions League 2023-24
The "All time" list of former East German Clubs in the Bundesliga. Points allocated on a place finished basis, ie 18 for finishing 1st. Seasons spent in the Bundesliga in brackets: Hansa Rostock 74 (12) Union Berlin 49 (4) Energie Cottbus 26 (6) Dynamo Dresden 18 (4) Lokomotive Leipzig 1 (1) (Unless I've made a mistake somewhere. As per earlier comments RB Leipzig don't count. f**k 'em)...
Edit: Union also qualified for the UEFA Cup after a DFB-Pokal cup final appearance in 2000-01 when they were in Bundesliga 2 (lost 2-0 to Schalke).

And yet more drama from Germany. Bundesliga 2. Hamburger SV fans were on the pitch celebrating promotion as they had just won 1-0 at Sandhausen. Heidenheim needed to win and were trailing 2-1 away at Jahn Regensburg and that match was deep into injury time. So after 4 seasons out of the top flight, one of the giants of German football were set for automatic promotion to the Bundesliga. Oopsy. Heidenheim scored in the 93rd and 98th minute to not only gain automatic promotion, but also the Bundesliga 2 title. Hamburg will play off against Bundelsiga 3rd bottom side Stuttgart. Since the play off system was introduced in 2008-09 season, Bundesliga sides have won 12, Bundesliga 2 sides have won just 2. The last Bundesliga 2 side to win the play offs was Union Berlin in 2018-19.

Bayern Munich 'need to make changes' despite winning Bundesliga title..By Constantin Eckner, German football writer.Bayern Munich have won their 11th consecutive championship in dramatic fashion, beating FC Cologne 2-1, while rivals Borussia Dortmund gave away their lead at the top of the table with a 2-2 draw against Mainz. But only minutes after Jamal Musiala scored the deciding goal at Cologne, it was announced that chief executive Oliver Kahn and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic had been dismissed from their positions. Bayern midfielder Thomas Muller was surprised by the timing, saying: "That happens now? One minute after the final whistle?" While manager Thomas Tuchel, who chairman Herbert Hainer insisted would remain at the club, said: "Instead of celebrating, we now have another issue. My two main contacts are no longer here. We have to align our ideas." It was not the first time Bayern's timing seemed off this season. In late March, the German record champions sacked manager Julian Nagelsmann despite having lost only three games across all competitions and replaced him with Tuchel. The former Chelsea boss did not manage to change things for the better immediately, suffering elimination from the Champions League and the German Cup. The weekend before the final matchday, Tuchel's side dropped to second in the Bundesliga with a 3-1 loss to RB Leipzig. Thanks to Dortmund not being able to hold their nerve on Saturday, Bayern came away with yet another title. But the club's board had already decided to let Kahn and Salihamidzic go before the game against Cologne was played. The feeling in Bayern's headquarters was that both former players had recently made too many mistakes, including repeated managerial changes and costly misfires on the transfer market, most notably the signing of Sadio Mane from Liverpool. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/B855/production/_129898174_mediaitem129898171.jpgRummenigge and Hoeness will be backAs so often with organisations in turmoil, Bayern return to what worked in the past. Jan-Christian Dreesen, the club's long-time chief finance officer, has taken over as chief executive, while Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeness are set to serve in advisory roles, with Rummenigge becoming part of Bayern's supervisory board. What's known is that Rummenigge and Hoeness, who led Bayern for decades, will return to try to stabilise the club and use their large network in European football to ensure the next high-profile transfers have the desired effect. A few weeks ago, Hoeness arrived at Bayern's training ground unannounced, indicating that the former chairman, who served a prison sentence between 2014 and 2016 for tax fraud, may take over one more time. During his visit, Hoeness talked to manager Tuchel for about 15 minutes. Rummenigge and Hoeness hope the 49-year-old boss can improve the overall performance of the team and potentially integrate new players, as Bayern look to start a squad rebuild this summer. Mane is one of the players Bayern are willing to sell if an appropriate offer comes in. The former Liverpool star earns about £325,000 per week and has been a disappointment, particularly in the second half of the season. Tuchel did not consider bringing Mane on during the two final games, which says a lot about his standing in the team. What Bayern desperately need is a striker who can serve as a real target player, like Robert Lewandowski before his departure in summer 2022. Bayern signed Mane instead of a traditional number nine, and suffered. They are reportedly interested in Frankfurt's Randal Kolo Muani and Juventus' Dusan Vlahovic. Tottenham's Harry Kane is also on the list of potential transfer targets, but Bayern are aware of the stiff competition they would face for the England captain. 'FC Hollywood' needs to be goneHowever, even more important than a few hit signings this summer will be the overall presentation of the club. In good times, Bayern are known as a well-oiled machine, while in bad times have been labelled 'FC Hollywood', because of all the drama behind the scenes and in public. They are in an FC Hollywood phase once again, and need to get out of it as soon as possible. That would include more consistency in the manager's office, no drama in the boardroom and fewer leaks to the media. While Rummenigge and Hoeness were not able to always keep the drama out, the two led Bayern during highly successful periods in which the club were able to beat their peers from England and Spain in the Champions League. Whether they can recreate those successes remains to be seen. The only certainty is that Bayern are still strong enough to clinch a domestic championship, albeit narrowly, and that the attempt to hand over the reins to Kahn and Salihamidzic ended at the weekend.

VfB Stuttgart 3 Hamburg SV 0. Hamburg were awful... they need a Sheffield Wednesdayesque performance in the second leg. There was absolutely no sign of that happening in the 1st leg. So very likely back to back play-off defeats for Hamburg. Even Hertha beat them last year! As for the 'full' names of Clubs (the "VfB" and "SV") - quick code breaker here www.bundesliga.com/en/bundesliga/news/german-soccer-team-names-explained-bvb-vfb-bayern-borussia-8692More detail in the brilliant book "Tor!" by Uli Hesse, the bible of German football.

Yes, SW proved it can be done with determination and application, as for Hamburg who knows ?..maybe.

After Wiesbaden went 4-0 up flares and supporters causing problems in the Arminia away end let to teams being led off of the pitch. Match held up for around 15mins or so. Arminia Captain in tears and trying to placate the away support. Game finally was back in play and Bet365 cut the feed! I guess ended up 4-0 to Wiesbaden. Another Sheffield Wednesdayesque required. Unlikely on this showing. Arminia OK on the ball, but donkeys up front.

Hamburg 1 Stuttgart 3. An early great strike from Hamburg gave them a bit of hope. Looked like a legitimate Stuttgart equalizer was chalked off. 1-0 HT. A horrendous Hamburg goal keeper error had the scores back to 1-1 on the night. A further Stuttgart goal made it safe before another late Stuttgart goal made it 3-1 to Stuttgart and a whopping 6-1 on aggregate. Yet another win for the Bundesliga vs Bundesliga 2.

The loss means Hamburg, who once celebrated the longest run in the top division with a clock marking every second the former Champions League winners had not been relegated, will now play a sixth season in the Bundesliga 2. Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeness, who has lost just one of 10 league matches since taking over in early April, lauded his team's "ability to handle pressure". "Compliments to the team" Hoeness said of securing first division football next season "it sure didn't look like that eight or nine weeks ago." His Hamburg counterpart Tim Walter, who coached Stuttgart for six months in 2019 before being sacked, lamented how close but how far his side was. "We played a great season, 20 wins, but we were missing just one point. "We're building something unbelievable here, I'm incredibly proud of my team, unfortunately the first division side were a little bit better." Thrashed 3-0 in Thursday's first leg, Hamburg gave their suffering supporters hope early. A stunning long-range strike from Sonny Kittel just seven minutes in gave the home side the lead in front of an electric 57,000-strong home crowd. Hamburg built and pushed in the hope of a second and breathed a sigh of relief after 16 minutes when a superb Serhou Guirassy backheeled goal was chalked off for offside. Stuttgart struck early after half-time, the unmarked Millot firing in from close range. Millot scored another midway through the second stanza, pouncing on a huge goalkeeping error from Daniel Heuer Fernandes, who miscued a punt on the edge of his box, allowing the Frenchman to tap in. Hamburg pushed to turn the tie but Stuttgart scored again deep into injury time, attacker Silas adding a third to seal his side's place in next year's top division. Hamburg, with six league titles and a European Cup victory 40 years ago, will play second division football for another season. Under German football's playoff system, the 16th-placed team in the top division faces the third-placed team in the second division. Since their relegation, Hamburg have finished fourth three times and third twice, losing last year's relegation playoff against Hertha Berlin.

An early Bielefeld goal made it interesting for a bit. Then a big hoof down the pitch from Wiesbaden, a flick on, and a goal. Same Bielefeld player bounced off a few challenges late into HT injury time and knocked in the second. Bielefeld 1 Wiesbaden 2 at HT and game over.
