Didn't catch it... but missed a cracker. Wurzburger Kickers 2 Hannover 96 II 3. Wurzburger were 5 minutes away from promotion... but conceded a late penalty. So it ended 3-3 on aggregate. A penalty for both teams in Extra Time. Hannover 96 II prevailed 5-4 on penalties. The end of season play-offs invariably deliver! German season (well Bundesliga 2 and Liga 3) starts August 2-4th. Already have the date in the diary... UNVEU. Expensive flights priced me out of August and early September. Booked a £31 return from Stansted to Baden-Baden and hoping to get tickets for Freiburg vs Bochum on Sep 14th.

Sorry BT, missed this. Don't think he featured in the games I caught last season. Union struggled for goals all season - so suggests Bedia wasn't as good as the mis-firing strikers Union tried. Will keep an eye on his progress though, good luck to him. Union have a long tradition of signing players with the right attitude. I think a lot supporters perceive character and effort to be more important than skill... My kind of Club! Union host St Pauli this evening - on Sky Sports mix (the free one). 100% guaranteed to have the Alte Forsterei rocking. Can't wait...

English football - healthy attendances lower down the leagues... and German football generally looks less well supported. Big reason for this. Germany at tier 4 has 5 leagues, tier 5 has 13 leagues, tier 6 has 12 leagues. English football top 6 tiers, 7 leagues. German football top 6 tiers, 33 leagues. So a lot 'fatter' pyramid. Tickets all sold out for Freiburg / Bochum and nothing in re-sale, so looks like a trip lower down the leagues beckons this weekend in Baden-Wurtemburg.

Freiburg tickets did (finally) go on re-sale 48 hours before kick off! See match report in "Where are you going". An entertaining game played in good spirit ended up Freiburg 2 Bochum 1. Bochum pointless after 3 games along with Holstein Kiel and St Pauli. Union unbeaten on 5pts after a 0-0 at the universally loathed plastic Leipzig. Just 22 Euros to watch top flight Bundesliga. On a terrace. With a cheap beer in hand. Great atmosphere. No trouble. Free local public transport. Or pay over £20 to watch the national league in tier 5. Tier 5! Some grounds all-seater. No beer allowed within sight of the pitch. And it's not cheap. Invariably not a lot of atmosphere. Local transport usually expensive and unreliable. In the immortal words of Johnny Rotten: "Ever Get the Felling You've Been Cheated"?

Saturday 21st September 2024 - Bundesliga - Venue: Stadion An der Alten Försterei - Attendance: 21,831
Union Berlin 2 (Rothe 4, Wooyeong 8) Hoffenheim 1
Union Berlin's Jeong Woo-yeong scores a goal during a Bundesliga match against Hoffenheim in Berlin, Germany on Saturday.
Korean midfielder Jeong Woo-yeong scored his first goal for Union Berlin to lead his side to a 2-1 win over Hoffenheim in the 2024-25 Bundesliga season on Saturday.
Berlin went in front at Stadion An der Alten Forsterei in Germany inside four minutes with Tom Rothe opening the scoring.
Jeong doubled that lead two minutes later, exploiting a defensive error inside the penalty area and slotting the ball into the back of the net. The 2-0 lead lasted through the halftime whistle. Marius Bulter pulled one back for Hoffenheim in the 67th minute, but that was the last goal of the match.
Jeong’s first goal of the season comes in his third match for Berlin, which he joined on loan from fellow Bundesliga team VfB Stuttgart ahead of this campaign. The 25-year-old saw a slow start to the season, playing only 22 minutes in two league games as a substitute before Saturday’s fixture.
Saturday’s victory extends Berlin’s unbeaten streak in the league to four, having recorded two wins and two draws to sit in fourth place in the 18-team table as of press time Sunday.
Berlin will be back in league action against Borussia Monchengladbach on September 28th.

No chance of getting a ticket this season (unless I pounce on a re-sale ticket and go in the 'home' end of whoever they're playing away). Looking at one more trip to Germany before the winter break...

The bottom 3 look detached already. After Bochum's miracle escape in the play-offs last season, surely they will go down this year. Union look a little more settled this season. They cunningly removed themselves from European football after last seasons doomed foray in the Champions League. I'd be surprised if they make a European place this season... but with the Eisern, you never know what happens next. Und Niemals Vergessen Eisern Union!

Another point for Union who sit 4th. I still think a European place is probably unlikely. A very interesting Bundesliga 2 table shaping up - just 5 points separate the top 10 places. I would like to see Magdeburg go up (former DDR Club), but they got thumped 0-3 at home by Dusseldorf who are now top. Down at the bottom - Schalke struggling again with 8pts from 10 games. Schalke are the 3rd biggest Club in Germany by membership numbers. Almost unthinkable for a Club that size to go down to Liga 3...
Edit: Magdeburg were beaten 0-3 by Hannover. Dusseldorf were beaten 3-4 by Kaiserslautern.

Union now have 56,000 members (10th). That's insane. They only had around 25,000 4 years ago. Hertha have 46,000 (11th). They are still at the 22,000 capacity Alte Forsterei. Bloody typical, they have to be the hardest Club in Europe to get a ticket for...

It don't get much better for UB than to be sitting pretty in 4th place, a good start by any club is vital as it's very unlikely UB will be involved in relegation worries this season. Haching in trouble in L3 1 from bottom. Looks like they have lost all the goals in the team with retirement of Stephan Hain and move of Patrick Hobsch to 1860. 150 goals between them in 260 appearances.
After a bright start to the season, Haching keep drawing too many games especially at home. Bottom half of the table is very tight so a turning some of those draws wins should see them jump a good few places but they need to start that habit soon

Looking to tick off Sandhausen in Liga 3 (south of Heidelberg, Germany's smallest professional Club) at some stage - cheap flights to Baden Baden.
