Jude Bellingham set for awkward referee reunion after UEFA make controversial Euro 2024 semi-final announcement..by Stuart Ballard.
i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/07/09/06/87098507-0-image-a-1_1720502103713.jpg Felix ZwayerJude Bellingham is set for a reunion with Felix Zwayer after UEFA picked the German official to referee England's Euro 2024 semi-final with the Netherlands on Wednesday. Zwayer was banned by the German football federation for six months for his role in a match-fixing scandal back in 2005. He admitted to accepting a bribe from fellow official Robert Hoyzer, who was subsequently given a lifetime ban from football. Zwayer was one of three German referees who stepped forward to bring Hoyzer's match-fixing ploy to light, which helped reduce his ban. He returned to top-flight football soon after and was selected as a VAR official at the 2018 World Cup. But the official was back in the spotlight in December 2021 after officiating a game between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. He was heavily criticised for not awarding Dortmund a penalty in their 3-2 defeat to Bayern with Bellingham referring to Zwayer's ban in a post-match interview. "You can look at a lot of the decisions in the game," he said at the time. "You give a referee, that has match-fixed before, the biggest game in Germany. What do you expect?" Bellingham was slapped with a €40,000 (£33,970) for his remarks with Zwayer taking a short break from officiating. The 43-year-old has now been selected by UEFA to referee England's game against the Netherlands having already taken charge of 4 games at the tournament. It will be the first time he's taken charge of a match involving Bellingham since their controversy two-and-a-half years ago.

In my days as a referee, my friends didn't want me to officiate their games as, in my efforts to be impartial, they felt I actually penalised them more.Let's hope Felix Zwayer takes the same approach.
Somehow I suspect not.

This has the potential to be explosive, and EUFA shouldn't really be putting themselves in this position.

It's amazing that UEFA have done this. I had just assumed anyone found to have accepted a bribe would be banned for life from officiating in any capacity.

From what I know from when I used to have a German girlfriend years ago Germans don't really see us as bitter rivals in football in the same way that some English see Germany. The Dutch however is a completely different story, I don't know which player it was or when exactly but at the end of a match between Germany and The Netherlands when they swapped shirts one Dutch player wiped his a$$ with the German shirt, so if anything he's more likely to be biased against the Dutch I would say.

Match report by Gary Rose, BBC Sport journalist at Allianz Arena.Lamine Yamal became the youngest goalscorer in European Championship history as Spain beat France in an absorbing contest to reach the final of Euro 2024. After Randal Kolo Muani headed in Kylian Mbappe's cross to give France an early lead, Yamal curled home a stunning strike from outside the box to write his name into the record books by scoring at the age of 16 years and 362 days. Yamal's goal came in the 21st minute, and Spain were ahead just four minutes later as Dani Olmo's shot was turned home by France defender Jules Kounde. France had to come out fighting after a thrilling first half - and they did just that, with Aurelien Tchouameni having a header saved and Mbappe denied from an ambitious effort. The France captain, playing without a face mask for the first time since breaking his nose at the start of the tournament, had a big chance to equalise late on - but he shot high over the bar in a moment that summed up his recent form. While Spain have been the most attacking side at the tournament to date, here they showed they have the defence to match as they stayed on course for a fourth European Championship title. France, for their part, came up short in attack against a side that will take some stopping when they face either England or the Netherlands in Sunday's final.

Dortmund is not that far from the Dutch border, so it's not surprising. You could try the old Indian trick of moving around quickly to make it look like there are more of you than there are

Yeah, in my experience (lived in Germany for 25 years) it's actually the Dutch who really really dislike the Germans. The Dutch have a number of songs about the Germans returning all the bikes they stole when the Germans retreated from Holland in WW2. The Dutch have never forgiven them. Then you had the Frank Riijkaard and Rudi Voller spitting incident at the 1990 World Cup. It's always bubbling just below the surface when these two countries play each other. The Germans see England as more of a friendly rivalry.

Germany 2 Netherlands 1 - 1990 FIFA World Cup - Spitting Incident
Frank Rijkaard was the cause of an incident with Rudi Völler when West Germany played the Netherlands in the second round of the 1990 FIFA World Cup.
Rijkaard was booked for a tackle on Völler and, as Rijkaard took up position for the free kick, he spat in Völler's hair.
Völler complained to the referee and was booked as well. From the resulting free kick, Völler then handled the ball and then went to the ground (according to his own account) to avoid a collision with Dutch keeper Hans van Breukelen, while others, notably Rijkaard and van Breukelen, saw Voller's handball and his resulting action as a dive in hopes for a penalty.
Van Breukelen was angry at this but Rijkaard, already annoyed by Völler's previous antics, again confronted the West German by twisting his ear and stamping on his foot.
Argentine referee Juan Carlos Loustau sent off both Rijkaard and Völler.
As he jogged back to the entrance tunnel, Rijkaard again spat in Völler's hair as they left the pitch.
Germany won the match 2–1 and eventually went on to win the tournament.
The German press nicknamed him "Llama" for his spitting.
Rijkaard would later apologise for his behaviour to Völler, who accepted.

I would like to see players that spit on other players, officials or fans banned for 1 year.
It's incredibly insulting.
