English footballers have been class for clubs and rubbish for England since Hoddle at France 1998. I don't rate Southgate highly, but they were rubbish for Wilkinson, Keegan, Taylor, Eriksson, McClaren, Cappello, Pearce, Hodgson, and Allerdyce too. I'm sick of hearing how much it means to them. Show, don't tell me. Knobs.

Show, don't tell me. Knobs. It went back before this - I remember people making similar comments about John Barnes. I really think that if Hoddle hadn't made his unfortunate comments, then England could have really progressed under his leadership. I liked his mentality, his approach to the game and the direction he seemed to be taking the team in.

Report by Emma Sanders, BBC Sport journalist at Cologne Stadium.Spain set up a blockbuster quarter-final tie with Euro 2024 hosts Germany by surviving an early scare to ease past Georgia. Playing in their first major tournament, Georgia had to soak up heavy pressure from Spain early on but stunned those watching on at Cologne Stadium when they took a surprise lead after 18 minutes. Spain defender Robin le Normand poked Otar Kakabadze's curling cross into his own net, finishing off a devastating counter-attack and silencing supporters behind their goal. Substitutes warming up sprinted over to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who led Georgia's celebrations in the corner. It sparked confidence in Georgia but Spain's pressure eventually paid off when Manchester City's Rodri drilled a shot into the bottom corner - beating goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who had another outstanding overall display. Stats: Spain 4 Georgia 1 - Possession: 75.2% - 24.8% - Shots: 35-4 - On Target: 13-0 - Corners: 13-3

Everybody we put into the game played a part and helped us get over the line. They are all pushing and helping each other and tonight, that made the difference." On Jude Bellingham: "Fantastic. We were thinking should we take him off, but you know he is capable of those sorts of moments. We know in the game itself we needed to better with the ball, we couldn’t find the right solutions in the first half and we did it better in the second. "Under that pressure they kept probing. In the end it is the old fashioned long throw that gets the goal, those moments can happen when you keep wearing a team down." On Harry Kane: "He is an extraordinary goal scorer, he is leading the team so well. He has been exceptional as a captain keeping the ship steady. "He has been through it before and nights like tonight are which the younger ones will refer back to as that is what happens in tournaments." England manager Gareth Southgate, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "I had a funny feeling the game wasn't dead and I know that sounds ridiculous. We were pushing and probing. "Ultimately it is the one we have thrown in the box that got us the goal." On Jude Bellingham's sublime goal: "With 15 minutes to go you wonder if he is out on his feet. Him and Harry Kane produce those moments and that is why you don't makes changes when people are clamouring for more changes. We had enough attacking players on the pitch." More from England manager Gareth Southgate, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "We felt that Bukayo [Saka] at left-back gave us an extra attacking outlet. It is a good option to have. I have to say the courage shown by the players was fantastic tonight." On the quarter-final against Switzerland being his 100th match in charge of England: "That's neither here nor there. We haven't come to get to a quarter-final but to get through a night like tonight was fantastic character and we now play a Swiss team that have been very good. We have a couple of days to recover and get ready for them." More from England boss Gareth Southgate, speaking to BBC Sport: "We lose Marc Guehi for the next game and we have a few days to recover as that has taken everything, but what a lift for the players. “I had belief we would get a goal. The boys that came on, Ivan Toney played a big part – he was disgusted at me putting him on at that moment 94th minwhen England trailed 1-0)." More from England boss Gareth Southgate: "Clearly in the first half we were too slow on the ball and they were compact in midfield. Second half we changed and I thought for a young team we showed great patience. We didn’t rush things. "Everybody will understandably be questioning our performances, but we have some qualities that have kept us in this. "I’m so pleased with the players sticking together, the leadership they’ve shown." Stats: England 2 Slovakia 1 - Possession: 63% - 37% - Shots: 16-13 - On Target: 2-3 - Corners: 9-1

Obviously too ponderous in our passing.Sideways.At one point I was reminded of Ben Garners style at Rovers.
Having said that we deserved the win,we were the better side.
Slovakia had their moments and perhaps could of scored 3 but we could of had 4 or 5.
Once we managed to get between the Slovakian midfield and defence area, on flanks or in field ,say 40 to 20 yards from their goal,we started to look dangerous, Slovakia did'nt like us then.It did'nt happen enough, but imo we must aim to get the ball in that zone far more often.
"Hey Jude"!A world class goal. Ivan Toney did well coming on and I imagine he's going to represent England again in this tournament.
Hopefully this victory and the nature of the equaliser will encourage England for the quarters.
We deserved this victory.

I didn't watch any of it. But very pleased for England fans. The best thing about it though... surely the look on Scottish football fans faces at the denouement.

England have been really underwhelming definitely, but I think other than possibly Germany and Spain none of the other big teams have lived up to the hype. France and Belgium haven't been great at all. At least only one of Germany and Spain can progress past the next stage. I reckon Germany have to be favourites from what I've seen so far. Next game Southgate needs to start Cole Palmer and make some other changes, Toney was pretty good. Other than the goal which was pretty amazing Bellingham has been pretty bad, Foden mediocre, Kane...etc etc. If drastic changes don't happen, will be out next round, they aren't playing with aby vigour, giving ball away loads, passing to nobody/straight to opposition. I guess though none of the teams that have gotten to the knockout stage are bad teams so maybe the idea that we've had an easy route so far isn't true at all.

Match report by Gary Rose, BBC Sport journalist at Dusseldorf Arena.A late own goal by Jan Vertonghen sent France into the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 at Belgium's expense. A game that had lacked quality and excitement for large periods looked destined for extra time, but a shot by substitute Randal Kolo Muani deflected off Vertonghen with five minutes remaining to seal the victory at Dusseldorf Arena. France had missed several chances before that as once again their lack of a cutting edge let them down, and even captain Kylian Mbappe put efforts he would normally finish wide. Belgium could even have taken the lead themselves before France's late goal as Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne charged into space through the middle, but his shot was pushed behind by Mike Maignan. That had been the below-par Belgians only decent opportunity as France closed out the final few minutes to progress to the last eight, where they will face either Portugal or Slovenia.

How much does Southgate get paid for being England manager, and does it pale into insignificance compared to what a top premier league manager earns? I say this as I know he managed the England under 21 team but he didn't have a successful career managing clubs before. Is it just the money required to recruit someone like Klopp or Pep, or even someone not quite as successful but still very good is not in the same realm as what England manager earns? Or could it be that players don't earn much for playing for England so they don't perform as well? Or maybe they're so scared of picking up an injury that could hamper their more lucrative club careers? Be interesting to see if/how much things improve in the next game, would be quite ironic if we got into the final playing as they are currently, but i think it's entirely possible, lol.

I don't know, but I do believe I recall England making Eriksson and especially Cappello very much richer. It didn't stop amazing Champions League club stars playing rather more like Paul Tait though. There's something about playing for England, and it smells a bit iffy.

I hope Jude Bellingham does'nt get banned for making a rude gesture.
Apparently a fine is more likely.
