I don't know, but I do believe I recall England making Eriksson and especially Cappello very much richer. It didn't stop amazing Champions League club stars playing rather more like Paul Tait though. There's something about playing for England, and it smells a bit iffy. Not completely related but how satisfying to see Ronaldo's penalty saved. He is or maybe was now an outstanding player, but from what we see of him, a very dislikeable arrogant person.

England definitely haven't been at their best this tournament that's for sure, but Portugal one place behind England in world rankings don't seem to be able to beat Slovenia either, maybe the fact is none of these teams are that bad at all.

You're too kind. Some world class players don't try their best for some national teams, or something else gets to them psychologically. But it's been happening for too long now.

Money probably has a lot to do with it, it's all about their clubs and the mega bucks associated with them. England have always collectively been worth nowhere near the sum of their parts for years. Maybe it's because I was young and less cynical but there seemed to be a lot more genuine passion back when I watched my first World Cup in Italia '90.

Not sure Shoveler, but it involved his 'tackle' in some way. JB says it was a message to some mates,a private joke ( I think). The authorities are investigating and it's a possibility he could be banned for the Swiss game.

Not at all - his reputation in the game is one of someone down-to-earth who remained true to his humble roots. A lot of good stories about him from people who have met him off the field. Messi, in contrast, gave the impression of being an almighty pri*k in the 2022 World Cup - the stuff against the Netherlands was embarrassing.

I would actually like to see the football authorities come down harder on him for this.

Maybe it's just the media and how they portray him then I guess, it's pretty easy to get the wrong impression though. Unless you've actually met someone and know them well enough you can't really judge them I suppose.

Some sort of crotch jestering motion (a la Michael Jackson) at the Slovakian bench although he denies it was aimed at them.

Match report by Emma Sanders, BBC Sport journalist at Frankfurt ArenaCristiano Ronaldo was left in tears after his penalty was saved in extra time but Portugal still progressed to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 following a dramatic shootout victory over Slovenia. Portugal's superstar captain saw his penalty kept out by Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak and he was consoled by his team-mates, as fans chanted his name in the stands. But he recovered to score his country's first penalty in the shootout - where goalkeeper Diogo Costa saved all three kicks he faced - before Manchester City's Bernardo Silva netted the winning kick. Ronaldo was involved in the thick of it throughout the night as he searched for his first goal at Euro 2024. Before his penalty was tipped on to the post, he wasted a golden opportunity in the final minute of normal time, drilling his shot straight at Oblak, having seen countless crosses fly over his head throughout 120 minutes of blockbuster action. Eventually, Portugal's persistence paid off as Slovenia crumbled in the shootout and Costa's heroics ensured Ronaldo's Euro dream continues. Portugal had dominated for long periods and should have led in the first half when Joao Palhinha struck the post. Slovenia, who defended with grit and resilience, had chances of their own and will regret Benjamin Sesko failing to score when through one-on-one with Portugal goalkeeper Costa in the final minutes of extra time. Portugal now play France in the quarter-finals in Hamburg on Friday, while Slovenia leave the competition in the cruellest of manners.

In the scenario he is banned for the Swiss game,I think it would be a stupid decision, possibly anti English and awful for the competition.

Gutted for Slovenia. Ronaldo is a selfish, horrible narcisist. A free kick from a dangerous position - outside of the box, but at an angle, making a shot on target almost impossible. So what does the Captain do? Instead of whipping a ball into the box for a great chance of scoring... decides to have a crack at a 1 in a thousand goal attempt. It's all about Ronaldo. Never about the team. "Now everyone, let's talk about ME". So when he misses the penalty - I am celebrating big time stylee. Then he cries like a big baby. Pathetic. Then the vile cheat Pepe falls over and Slovenia have a 1 on 1 to score and effectively knock Portugal out of the tournament. "And he must score. And he does 'nt". Keeper saves. Then penalties and ffs. It's the football. Best game ever invented. By England.

Private joke or not, is it the sort of gesture you should be making when representing your country? I think not.
