Match report by Gary Rose, BBC Sport journalist at Allianz ArenaSubstitute Donyell Malen scored twice and Cody Gakpo got his third goal of Euro 2024 to help the Netherlands see off a spirited Romania and reach the quarter-finals of the tournament for the first time in 16 years. Liverpool forward Gakpo opened the scoring with a brilliant finish midway inside the first half, cutting inside before unleashing a drive into the bottom corner. The Dutch missed numerous chances after that but made sure they did not risk paying for it when substitute Malen stabbed in late on from Gakpo's ball. Malen then wrapped up an impressive win for the Netherlands, with Romania having committed players forward, as he charged in on goal before slotting home. It was a much-improved performance from the Netherlands, who had to deal with early pressure from an enthusiastic Romania, who were backed by their loud and colourful fans. Romania's early pressing forced their opponents into mistakes and they gave them a scare when Dennis Man fizzed a shot just over. But Gakpo’s goal changed the pattern of the game and they could have gone further ahead just before the break, but Xavi Simons somehow fired wide. Romania again came out fighting in the second half but it was the Dutch who continued to have the better chances as Memphis Depay failed to score from close range, Virgil van Dijk hit the post with a header and Gakpo’s shot after a driving run was pushed behind. But Malen, who had come on at half-time, scored twice in the final 10 minutes to avoid any late drama, and the Netherlands can now look forward to facing either Turkey or a rematch with their group opponents Austria in the last eight.

Not sure Shoveler, but it involved his 'tackle' in some way. JB says it was a message to some mates,a private joke ( I think). The authorities are investigating and it's a possibility he could be banned for the Swiss game. It is insulting people's intelligence to claim it was a private joke with mates. I would actually like to see the football authorities come down harder on him for this. I've always wondered why it's called a bicycle kick? Last time I kicked a bicycle I broke my toe.

Tonight's "noise" from the fans is the worst, all from the Turks' since the forking Vuvuzela's in South Africa during the World cup there... blasted annoying, pathetic and rather boring

Match report by Chris Bevan, BBC Sport journalist at Red Bull Arena, LeipzigMerih Demiral scored twice - including the quickest knockout-stage goal in European Championship history - as Turkey stunned Austria to set up a quarter-final with the Netherlands. This was arguably the best game of the tournament so far, a thrilling winner-takes-all tie played in pouring rain at a frenetic pace, with both teams roared forward by their fervent support. Turkey set the tone for what was to come when they opened the scoring with just 57 seconds on the clock. Arda Guler’s corner was not cleared and Demiral pounced from close range to send their fans packed inside Leipzig's Red Bull Arena into raptures. Just before the hour mark, the same duo combined again. With Austria piling on the pressure, a rare foray forward resulted in another Guler corner that the 6ft 4in centre-back Demiral rose to powerfully head home. It brought the same deafening response from the stands and sparked wild celebrations on the touchline from Turkey manager Vincenzo Montella and his squad. There was still work to be done. Austria had not managed a shot on target in the first half but were much improved after the break and pulled a goal back when Stefan Posch flicked on Marcel Sabitzer's corner and substitute Michael Gregoritsch was unmarked to turn the ball home at the far post. Ralf Rangnick's side, who have won many admirers in Germany for their enterprising high-intensity play, poured forward in search of an equaliser but, whatever they tried, they found the Turkey defence resolute. Austria are on their way home while Turkey are into their first Euros quarter-final since 2008. Now they head for Berlin, where they face the Dutch at the Olympiastadion on Saturday.

Austria / Turkey was another cracker. Why are England so incredibly slow, turgid, unimaginative and boring? Are they the only team that don't press? Seems to me that this is why they never win possession in a dangerous position. When teams press us, it goes sideways and backwards. No-one wants to take a player on. No-one wants to play a forward ball. No-one takes responsibility. This has to be down to Southgate. Is Southgate stuck in tika taka mode and thinks retaining the ball is all that counts? That style of football went out about 10 years ago. I'd have sacked him after the pathetic capitulation to Croatia in the 2018 WC semi-final. Nothing has changed since that game. Sack Southgate. Bring in Rishi Sunak, he's available Friday morning.

Sack Southgate. Bring in Rishi Sunak, he's available Friday morning. Rishi comes as a very expensive journeyman, unsuccessful as a manager and not very loyal, leaves his fellow countrymen standing on the beach if paying TV interview and free helicopter ride available, has been known to bet against his country if he can make a fast million or twelve. Rumoured to be leaving country to go to USA on Friday 5th, so even his kids will be ineligible to play after then. Also rumoured is Mike Bassett Farage, however track record worse than Rishi's. Lost 7 out of 7 at this level and even when he led by default never attended training. Hates foreigners but lives overseas with a foreign passport, eligible by marriage to lead Germany and kids can only play for them, so likely to have mixed feelings when it comes to penalties. Rumoured to be more interested in playing in the USA although his playing partner has a few legal issues at the moment. Likes the beer and fags and known to make strange hand signals when provoked. Blames everyone else when loses, hates the media although gets lots of interviews when paid. Third in the odds SK Starmer. Inexperienced at this level, although has played for an international legal eleven. A difficult sell to be honest as popular papers hate him and call him a traitor and even his own left midfield attack him. Described by many as steady but boring, has been known to get results but probably more like current manager Southgate with plenty of sideways and back passes to stop bringing attention to him and his team. Would bring a tough Manc aggressive sidekick, although as a tough female is known to be hated by middle age plus men for being gobby and getting under their skin. Again hated by the popular press but great experience of being the underdog and used to coping with false media claims about her playing background. So its back to Fat Sam then......

It was either Gareth Southgate or Harry Enfield. The latter only lost out because it was deemed to be a more downmarket suburb.

Tonight's "noise" from the fans is the worst, all from the Turks' since the forking Vuvuzela's in South Africa during the World cup there... blasted annoying, pathetic and rather boring Its a shame - Turkey is an out-and-out fascist country but our government doesn't have the guts to call it out for what it is. You go to Istanbul with all these expectations only to discover that it is a really, really unpleasant dump of a place. The Turkish minorities in places like Germany, Austria and indeed the UK don't give me a particularly positive impression either. Look at the way the likes of Ozil and Gundogan cosy up to the nasty, poisonous genocide-denying autocrat Erdogan...sickening.

You forgot to mention that fascist Farage is terrified of dolphins after the thrashing he received at the flippers of one of their kind. Would be guaranteed to add to our cup record of shame if we get drawn against Poole Town. Totally unfit to even scrub out the bogs at the mem with his own toothbrush

Just out of interest, is this the country you want to live in? I only ask because so-called progressives have been pretty deafeningly silent on this. For reasons of political correctness, people won't point out just how disgusting it is that our fellow nationals were openly celebrating the murder of Israeli civilians, including children. Or ripping down pictures of abducted civilians because being confronted with what their 'resistance fighters' have done is somehow intolerable for them. However, they will take cheap (and entirely inaccurate) pot shots at Farage, because he is an easy target and it will win points with the chattering classes around the dinner table.

The great man of the people ex stockbroker and stockbroker's son, really has the best interests of the working class at heart. The Reform party manifesto apart from being completely uncosted and fanciful made me laugh. Apparently they would "Pick up illegal migrants out of boats and take them back to France", pmsl is he for real, of course France would just take them back with open arms. He constantly courts publicity so he can't winge when some of it is negative.

It's ironic - the stockbroker's son actually has a closer affinity with the UK working-class than a toolmaker's son who takes each and every opportunity to tell us how he once worked in a warehouse and likes football (yawn, yawn, yawn). You are presumably old enough to remember local MP Tony Benn, who came from an even more privileged background than Farage and whose father was an actual Lord (Benn had to go to a lot of effort to renounce his inherited title) but who fought strongly for working-class rights and interests? Whatever solution that Farage puts forward on illegal migration is going to be better than what Starmer puts forward for the simple reason that Starmer doesn't have anything resembling a policy on the issue. In any case I think the French are going to resolve this issue by putting Le Pen and the RN in power, bringing the asylum/migration junket, which has made lawyers like Starmer very rich, to an abrupt end, and not before time.

Harry Enfield is a a big gooner. I really wish I hadn't mentioned Rishi Sunak in my post. I stand by the rest of it though. Apologies to all. Happy GE day.

This is a football forum so we shouldn't really be talking about politics here. If you look at the figures the numbers coming on boats illegally pales into insignificance compared to the numbers of legal migrants brought in to fill jobs either because neither business nor government have invested enough money for years in training our people from the UK so they can fill these roles. Or in other cases wages for many of the roles are so low nobody here is prepared to do the jobs for the lousy money offered. My point about Farage was mostly about the fact he tries to portray himself as something he clearly isn't and his manifesto is totally unrealistic, uncosted and doesn't hold up to economic scrutiny whatsoever. But anyway Football not Farage, so no more on the matter.

How Gareth Southgate ranks among England men's greatest managers..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/7/5/224c8528-dce7-4c07-b4ff-f6b4090fdd2e.jpgSo how does Gareth Southgate rate alongside the great managers of the England men's team? Only Sir Alf Ramsey (113) and Walter Winterbottom (139) have previously made it to 100 games in charge. Clearly, Ramsey leads the way in terms of trophies won - his triumph at the 1966 World Cup remains the only major silverware won by the England men's team. Winterbottom has the most wins overall (78), but had one less than Southgate's current tally of 60 in his first 100 games as manager. Sir Alf heads that benchmark, with 63 wins from his first 100 games. In terms of overall win percentage, Southgate's 60.6% ranks him fourth among England managers - Fabio Capello heads that list with 66.7% from 42 games, while Ramsey is second on 61.1%. At major tournaments, the Three Lions' World Cup-winning coach has a win percentage of 66.7% from 12 games - Southgate is second on 56.5% from 23 matches.
