Cricket World Cup 2023: Pakistan complete record World Cup chase to beat Sri Lanka..By Callum Matthews, BBC Sport.Pakistan superbly chased a World Cup record 345 to beat Sri Lanka in the game of the 2023 tournament so far in Hyderabad. At 37-2 their target seemed a long way off but a superb partnership of 176 off 156 balls between Abdullah Shafique and Muhammad Rizwan laid the platform. Shafique, who came into the team for Fakhar Zaman, made 113 off 103 balls before being caught at point, but Rizwan and Saud Shakeel then shared 95 for the fourth wicket. Rizwan received treatment on a back injury, and cramp in his calf, but battled through the pain in heroic style. The wicketkeeper finished unbeaten on 131 from 121 balls, and overcame the dismissal of Shakeel for 31, to hit the winning run and see his side home alongside Iftikhar Ahmed (22*) with 10 balls to spare. Sri Lanka made 344-9 from their 50 overs with Kusal Mendis smashing a brilliant 122 off 77 balls and Sadeera Samarawickrama 108 off 89. The match is the first in World Cup history to have four centuries. Pakistan have won their first two matches, while Sri Lanka have lost both theirs. Previous record chases in the Men's Cricket World Cup328 - Ireland v England, 2011 322 - Bangladesh v West Indies, 2019 319 - Bangladesh v Scotland, 2015 313 - Sri Lanka v Zimbabwe, 1992 310 - Sri Lanka v England, 2015 Pakistan captain Babar Azam: "It's good for us, the way the top order didn't perform, that the middle order stepped up for the match. "I'm very happy and impressed with the way he's [Shafique] playing in I think his fifth match and his first World Cup. "The way he and Rizwan built a partnership helped us." Player of the match Muhammad Rizwan: "It's always a proud moment for you when you perform for your country and performances like that, when you win the match, is speechless for you. "It was difficult because when you have a chase like that it's always special for you. The thing for us is that when we went to the dressing room every player had the belief that we can chase that." Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka: "Kusal [Mendis] is in another zone at the moment. It was a brilliant hundred. It is his time in this tournament and there is more to come from him. "I thought with the way the wicket behaved we were 20-25 runs short. They were bowling really good slower balls and the pitch was helping. "I can't ask too much from my bowlers. Me and the coaching staff have simple plans but we need to focus on bowling in tight areas and the number of extras. We gave them too many runs and that is my concern. The only way is to encourage them." ......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... WOW, WOW AND A FEW MORE WOW'S - WHAT A GREAT MATCH, NEARLY 700 RUNS, A WORLD CUP RECORD CHASE AND 4 BATTERS REACH 100.....

I hope I can continue that form in the future." On his 121-run partnership with Hashmatullah Shahidi: "We lost early wickets and we were trying to build a partnership, rotate the strike, and wait for the loose ball, and we did it. We enjoyed it a lot." On the game: "We tried to score 300 but we lost too many wickets in the middle. It is a good total for us and we have quality spinners and we'll try our best to defend the total."

India win by 8 wickets
Captain Rohit Sharma's scintillating century sprinted India to an emphatic eight-wicket World Cup defeat of Afghanistan in Delhi.
Rohit crunched a sparkling 131 from 84 balls before India reached their target of 273 with 15 overs to spare.
Hashmatullah Shahidi made 80 to put Afghanistan on course for a more challenging target, but Jasprit Bumrah's 4-39 had them end on 272-8.
It is a second defeat in two games for Afghanistan, while India have two wins.
The hosts join New Zealand and Pakistan in having a perfect record after two games and now play their fierce rivals Pakistan in the most anticipated match of the tournament in Ahmedabad on Saturday.
Afghanistan stay in Delhi to meet defending champions England on Sunday.
Player of the match, India captain Rohit Sharma: "It is always special to score a hundred in a World Cup. "I don't want to think about records too much. There is a long way to go and I don't want to lose my focus. "It is very important to get momentum at the start and have the winning streak continue."
Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi: "We had a target of 300+ in these conditions, especially as India's batting line-up is strong. But back-to-back wickets cost us. "We will try and learn from our mistakes and come back with a positive attitude."

GET INVOLVED:Andy Vickers: Last wicket definitely needed HotSpot to confirm which glove it hit. Should not overturn the umpire unless its clear which hand it brushed. James A Lyons: On the BBC Football chat this week everyone was saying VAR should follow crickets example to stamp out controversy. I think after Australia's innings today though they may realise that video decisions are universally dodgy. Sash_or_Chicane: The absolute cheek for Australia to ask Bavuma to withdraw the appeal after what happened to Bairstow. Reap what you sow lads. Nuzza: The Aussies are running out of luck now in Lucknow. John C Hughes: I think it’s fair to say Steve Smith wasn’t impressed with that decision. Either that or he was doing his best impersonation of a guppy fish as he walked off!! Steve, Bristol: Oh dear, the Aussies are out of the rugger and are getting hammered in the cricket today, it's about time we can say hard luck to them....for a change.

Australia suffered their heaviest World Cup defeat as they were trounced by South Africa in Lucknow.
They were set 312 to win but a miserable batting display saw them bowled out for 177 in 40.5 overs to lose by 134 runs.
It means they have lost their opening two games and four consecutive World Cup matches for the first time.
South Africa posted 311-7, with Quinton de Kock hitting 109 for his second century of the tournament.
He joins compatriot AB de Villiers as the only batter to start a Men's World Cup with consecutive hundreds.

New Zealand: Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, Kane Williamson (captain), Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham (wicketkeeper), Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult. Bangladesh post 245-9 Michael Vaughan - Former England captain on BBC Test Match SpecialIt's been a good effort by Bangladesh in the end. When they were four down it looked like it could be a quick game of cricket. They've chugged along and 245-9 is a good effort. It probably won't be enough, because it gets easier to bat at this venue. But it gives their bowlers a glimmer. They need wickets in that first powerplay. Kane Williamson retires hurt - NZ 200-2Kane Williamson is marching off the field at pace. He hadn't been on strike, and had just run through a single, Daryl Mitchell bringing up the New Zealand 200 with an outside edge off Mustafizur to deep third. Both captains are now off the field with suspected injuries. Let's hope they're not serious problems as it would be a significant blow to the tournament. Williamson has looked very strong on his return today. New Zealand win by eight wicketsDaryl Mitchell brought up his fifty with a six and he's finished the game the same way! Shoriful does well to hold this pair to a couple of singles from his first four balls, Phillips almost chopping onto his own stumps, but Mitchell didn't want to hang about - he leans back and sends the ball clear over the boundary at mid off. A comfortable victory for New Zealand, and they're now three wins from three.

Cricket World Cup 2023: India demolish Pakistan in Ahmedabad..By Stephan Shemilt, Chief cricket writer.ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/1440/cpsprodpb/9491/production/_131433083_gettyimages-1723468824.jpgIndia demolished Pakistan as the most eagerly awaited contest of the World Cup so far turned into a one-sided anti-climax in Ahmedabad. Pakistan have never beaten India in a men's 50-over World Cup, but looked to be laying a platform to challenge the hosts when they reached 155-2 in the cauldron of the world's largest cricket stadium. What followed was an implosion. Captain Babar Azam was bowled by Mohammed Siraj for 50 to begin a collapse of eight wickets for 36 runs, Pakistan spiralling to 191 all out. Siraj was one of five India bowlers to pick up two wickets. The target seemed so unlikely to trouble the powerful India batting line-up. Though Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli were both out for 16, home skipper Rohit Sharma batted magnificently for an 86 that put the result beyond doubt. Rohit shared 77 for the third wicket with Shreyas Iyer, who ended on 53 not out as victory was sealed with almost 20 overs to spare. For India, an eighth successive defeat of Pakistan in World Cups, a run that stretches back to 1992, is their third win in three games in this year's tournament. They join New Zealand at the top of the group table and next meet Bangladesh on Thursday. bmkltsly13vb.compat.objectstorage.ap-singapore-1.oraclecloud.com/cdn.sg.dailymirror.lk/assets/uploads/image_97ca1d73e3.jpgIndia captain Rohit Sharma: "There is no doubt about it that the bowlers set up the game for us again today. It was a great effort. I don't think it was a 190 pitch. At one stage we were looking at 270-280 but they came back and showed grit and that says a lot about the guys. "All in all it is looking good, and I want to keep my fingers crossed. We don't want to get too excited or get too low, we want to stay balanced." Pakistan captain Babar Azam: "Not good for us. The way we started, we were targeting 280 or 290 but the collapse cost us so our total is not good. "With the new ball, we were not up to the mark. If we had been, it might have been a different ball game. But the way Rohit played, it was an outstanding innings." Former Pakistan bowler Waqar Younis on BBC Test Match Special: "Pakistan have to really sit back and fix their issues. "Losing eight wickets in 12 overs is a no-go zone. Pakistan need to work out what needs to be done because they have big matches to play against England, South Africa and New Zealand. "Critics will be talking about Babar's captaincy. He didn't really think out of the box, it was pretty flat. In this sort of situation, you want to see your captain really doing something different to put pressure on the opposition and it didn't really happen."

Cricket World Cup 2023: England stunned by Afghanistan in damaging defeat..By Matthew Henry, BBC Sport in Delhi.England suffered a major shock at the hands of Afghanistan in Delhi as a sorry 69-run defeat left their World Cup defence in real jeopardy. Their first loss to Afghanistan in any format does not end England's chances but leaves them with little room for manoeuvre in their final six group stage games. After a lacklustre bowling performance allowed Afghanistan to reach 284 all out, England's batters succumbed under the lights and were bowled out for 215. Jonny Bairstow fell lbw to left-armer Fazalhaq Farooqi in the second over, Joe Root was bowled by Mujeeb Ur Rahman for 11, and Dawid Malan tamely chipped to extra cover. Only Harry Brook, who made 66, offered any resistance - captain Jos Buttler was the fourth to fall as he was comprehensively bowled by seamer Naveen-ul-Haq. England's wayward seamers had earlier gifted Afghanistan a platform of 100-0 after 13 overs, with opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz crashing 80 from 57 balls. Adil Rashid dragged back some control with 3-42 but more loose bowling at the death, plus 58 from Ikram Alikhil, took Afghanistan to a decent score. This is only Afghanistan's second win at a 50-over World Cup and was celebrated wildly by their loud support in the ground. England, looking to defend the title they won so memorably four years ago, have now lost two of their opening three games and play in-form South Africa next on Saturday in Mumbai. England captain Jos Buttler: "It is disappointing. Having won the toss and electing to field, me missing the fist ball down the leg side kind of set the tone. "It's a tough loss to take. Congratulations to Afghanistan, they outplayed us today. "It's always about execution and throughout the game we were not at the level we wanted to be consistently enough. That's the main area we lost the game." Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi: "I am quite happy, the whole team is happy. This is the best win we have got, we will be full of confidence and it is great for our country. "The belief, trust and talent is there. The last couple of times we haven't done it but we've always believed, we will be really positive for the next games. This is the first win, not the last win." Afghanistan spinner and player of the match Mujeeb Ur Rahman: "It's a very proud moment to be here in the World Cup beating the last champions, it is a good moment for the whole nation and the team. A wonderful performance for the bowlers and the batters." Former England bowler Steven Finn on BBC Test Match Special: "England are now hanging by a thread in this competition. "There are going to be a lot of meetings, a lot of conversations and a lot of head scratching over the next 48 hours. "They're going to have to pick themselves up because they are not technically out of the tournament. But they're going to need to change something and change it quick if they're going to compete against the best teams in the world."

A 6 by Stonis to seal an Australian win by five wicketsAustralia finally got their first win of the World Cup, but only after surviving some nervy moments against Sri Lanka. The five-time champions, who lost to India and South Africa in their opening two matches, were in another difficult situation when Sri Lanka reached 125-0. But Sri Lanka fell apart, losing all 10 wickets for 84 runs to be bundled out for 209. Even when faced with a modest target, Australia were 24-2, and had to be guided from trouble by maiden World Cup half-centuries from Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis, who made 52 and 58 respectively. Pyrotechnics were added by Glenn Maxwell's 31 not out from 21 balls, and Marcus Stoinis' unbeaten 20 from just 10, sealing Australia's victory with five wickets and almost 15 overs in hand. The fluctuations of the contest were matched by drama off the field in Lucknow, where high winds dislodged signs from the roof. Falling debris fell on to the pitch and seats, forcing spectators to the sheltered area at the back of the stands. The International Cricket Council said no one was hurt and the sparse crowd was able to move back closer to the field when the wind calmed. Australia are now only two points off the top four places in the group table and next meet Pakistan in Bangalore on Friday. That match, along with contests against New Zealand and England, will go a long way to deciding their progress. Sri Lanka, so far the only team in the competition to have suffered three defeats, play the Netherlands at the same ground on Saturday, knowing that another loss would probably send them out. Player of the Match, Australia's Adam Zampa: "I didn't feel great. I have had trouble with back spasms over the past couple of days so it was just about trying to get through that one. "I've had days where I've felt better and bowled better. Personally I know I'm not at my best, but it's nice to be on this end of the result tonight. "I've just got to try and keep my wicket-taking attitude because that's what works for me, regardless of whether I am going for runs or not. "We've got a tough game coming up next against Pakistan but I am going to try and keep things the same for me."
