David Moyes has done an "incredible" job as West Ham manager despite fan criticism, says Tomas Soucek...
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/E9D4/production/_132906895_gettyimages-2073639844.jpg Tomas Soucek has been at West Ham since 2020, having been signed by David MoyesSome poor results - including losing to Freiburg in their Europa League last-16 first leg - have led a section of Hammers fans to call for Moyes to go. However, West Ham are seventh in the Premier League, and Moyes also led them to a first trophy in 43 years in last season's Europa Conference League. "You can see the results, what he has done," said Soucek. "Now we are in Europe three times in a row for the first time in the club's history. "The job he has done is incredible. I am so happy I could be part of that, to help to create history. The manager does an important job and I think he has done very well the last few years - and this year as well." Soucek was speaking before West Ham's Europa League second leg on Thursday. Freiburg lead 1-0 after the first leg through Michael Gregoritsch's late goal. Czech Republic midfielder Soucek also defended Kalvin Phillips, who has had a difficult start to his loan spell at West Ham from Manchester City. Phillips has endured an error-strewn start to his time at West Ham, was sent off in his fourth game and was subbed at half-time in Sunday's 2-2 draw with Burnley. "I see him every day," said Soucek of his fellow midfielder. "He plays in good form in the sessions but it is very difficult for him, because after maybe two years at Manchester City, and for any player who doesn't play that often it's very difficult to play in the games. "It's difficult for him but we all support him, we are with him. He's a hard worker, which I like. I like his style and wish him all the best for the future. He's an important player for us, and he's a very good player."

We asked you for your thoughts on this prediction and here are some of your responses:
Tony: On the last two games' form? No. If they can lift it again for the rest of the season, yes they will scrape in. Andy: We still need a couple of quality strikers. I would prefer it if they got into the Europa League next season, but on current form, I can only see them scraping into the Europa Conference League. John: I hope I’m wrong but my feeling is that we will be lucky to stay in the top half of the league by the end of the season. The Premier League this season is more competitive than ever and even the teams facing relegation can take points from the Hammers when we play negatively. We need to be more proactive to take control of our own destiny. Steve: IMO West Ham will finish 7th and will play in Europe for the 4th consecutive year, never been done before. Chris: The competition for the Europa League and Conference places is hotting up. With Chelsea, Newcastle, Brighton and Wolves in the mix, West Ham are going to have to be far more consistent to stay in European football next year. I think the computer has our final position about right. If we are eighth, then Moyes has to go. Joe: West Ham have had three seasons in European football and a fourth looks unlikely. We have been too inconsistent and sometimes we don't look like we've got that cutting edge like those above us. The only way I see us getting Europe again is winning the Europa League trophy. One can dream! ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/353a/live/92b50160-dfb3-11ee-9410-0f893255c2a0.png

Here are some of your responses:
West Ham fans
Steve: Another lethargic performance. Hard to see where this squad goes from here. They seem to lack any ambition. So tired of watching them waste their talent. Enough, guys. Simon: Another frustrating performance. All fans were looking for a reaction after Thursday's defeat and the first-half performance was diabolical. We deserved to be 2-0 down. A much better second half but why couldn't we play with that tempo in the first half? We could then have then rested players earlier before Thursday. Instead we were left chasing the game. John: Absolutely poor beyond belief first half. Why can’t Moyes wind them up to come out like they did in second half from the start? Seems he wants them to be defensive until they have no choice but to play the way West Ham supporters want. Al: I just cannot cope with the inconsistency of this team. We need to be taking all three points from games like this. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/3/10/d99d9479-ecff-498b-a98d-e37d174dc7a6.jpg

West Ham 5-0 Freiburg: David Moyes praises West Ham's 'brilliant achievement'..By Simon Stone, BBC Sport.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/e1c4/live/5be38d30-e24e-11ee-9410-0f893255c2a0.jpgWest Ham manager David Moyes has described reaching a third successive major European quarter-final as a "brilliant achievement". The Hammers registered their biggest European win by beating Freiburg 5-0 at the London Stadium. They will be part of Friday's Europa League last-eight draw - the first time they have reached that stage in three successive seasons. Goals from Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen, Aaron Cresswell and a brilliant Mohamed Kudus double also took West Ham to their biggest win since Moyes came back to the club in December 2019. That was when they faced a battle to beat the drop, which wasn't avoided until the final couple of games. Moyes admitted he couldn't imagine the progress West Ham have made since then. "I am really pleased able to give West Ham something," he said. "I didn't want to be managing team at the bottom of league. I wanted to be managing a team challenging and, in the main, we have been that. "The club has moved on so much in the last few years. Avoiding relegation, making Europe, getting there a second year, winning a trophy, and now a quarter-final. It is a brilliant achievement. It is hard to say how good it has been and we have also brought in some really good players." One of the most recent is Kudus. The Ghana star has not been the most consistent performer since his arrival from Ajax last summer. However, even with the tie already secured, he lit up the London Stadium with a superb late double. Kudus' first effort was a solo run through the middle of the pitch, which the Freiburg defence was unable to stop. The second was a brutal shot there was no chance of keeping out. "The first one reminded me of those old dribbling wingers who used to run and take people on, with snakey hips to find a way through," said Moyes. "It was a brilliant individual goal - a real Roy of the Rovers type goal." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/613a/live/7e14f850-e23d-11ee-9410-0f893255c2a0.jpgi.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/03/14/21/82486165-13199115-image-a-24_1710452166026.jpgi.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/03/14/21/82486221-13199115-image-a-26_1710452257728.jpg

Hammers notch biggest Euro win - West Ham 5-0 Freiburg (5-1 on aggregate)ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/3/15/0c86a6be-81d4-48c1-89de-ff43e92ef4af.jpgWest Ham recorded the biggest European win in their history as they swept aside Freiburg to overturn a first-leg deficit and march into a third successive quarter-final. Before the match David Moyes evoked the memories of their comeback win against Sevilla at the same stage of the competition two seasons ago - and this time the Hammers boss got a similar outcome. Yet unlike that night against the Spaniards, when the home fans were tortured by tension and did not seal victory until extra-time, West Ham had the job wrapped up within an hour against a poor Freiburg side. Lucas Paqueta pulled them level in the tie after just nine minutes as he slid in unmarked to turn home Tomas Soucek's near-post flick from barely a yard. Jarrod Bowen continued his excellent season with his 18th strike of the campaign just after the half hour to put West Ham ahead on aggregate. Veteran defender Aaron Cresswell then scored his first goal in almost two years as the visiting defence allowed him too much space to shoot. The contest was finished but there was still time for Mohammed Kudus to make an impact as the Ghanaian scored twice in the final 15 minutes as West Ham completed their biggest win since Moyes returned to the club in December 2019.

Here are some of your responses:
West Ham fans
Jay: Absolutely robbed! VAR is ruining football. Taking 10 minutes to make a decision is not 'obvious' and it shouldn't count. VAR has robbed us in the past three games. The lads played unbelievably and Moyes should come out like this every week! Dave: Yet again another Moyes cock up with the use of substitutes. Why, with a fair length of the game to go, does Moyes take off our main striker and put on a defender. It’s senseless when you have that much time left and are only one goal up. This is two points lost because of poor management. Hurry up and go, Moyes. Richard: Moyes' tactics again. He took off Antonio and brought on a defender, Ben Johnson, who is arguably not Premier League quality anyway. If Antonio is tired, why not replace him with Danny Ings? 1-0 was not enough. We needed to attack, not defend the lead. Ted: Once more, terrible officiating in the Premier League. The richest football league in the world. Awful officiating every week - week in and week out. The pundits and fans talk about the execrable referees and bizarre VAR. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/89f0/live/6f3bdb30-e47e-11ee-b365-4389e10fab85.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/99a6/live/0ae3f2d0-e541-11ee-947c-7dac2ae30d4f.jpgJarrod Bowen wants to take the "same enjoyment of football" into playing for England as he has with West Ham this season. The forward has scored 18 goals this campaign, earning him another call-up from Gareth Southgate for his national side's friendlies against Brazil and Belgium. "I've been picked on my form playing here and every time you go into the international break you have to do it with that mindset of doing what you've been doing at club level," said Bowen. "Don't try to do too much, don't try to impress too much. I always think that can backfire on you. "It's going in with that same mindset and the same enjoyment of football. Go in there and try to impress. When you get your opportunity, it's important that you take it." The 27-year-old has been instrumental in helping the Hammers compete for a European spot in the Premier League this season. With West Ham in seventh, he believes the race for Europe will go right to the wire. "There are a lot of teams in the equation," he said. "Wolves have had some really good form and picked up, there's Brighton, Newcastle, even Fulham who have won a few games and started to pick up. "So, I wouldn't say it's just us and Manchester United. There are a lot of teams around us, five or six. "You can talk about a top-four race, it's the top-six or seven race as well. It'll be an exciting end to the season - we play a couple of the teams around us, so it's almost in our hands. If we beat them, we take control of it."

Lucas Paqueta: West Ham midfielder helping with investigation into betting breaches..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/63F3/production/_132978552_lp1.png Lucas Paqueta has scored seven Premier League and Europa League goals for West Ham in 2023-24West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta says he is "happy to be helping as much as I can" with an investigation for potential betting rules breaches. Last August, sources told BBC Sport Paqueta, 26, was being investigated by the Football Association. Paqueta has continued to play for West Ham and is in the Brazil squad for a friendly with England on Saturday. "It's been seven months since it happened and I'm cooperating as much as I can," the player said on Wednesday. The investigation, which is also said to involve world governing body Fifa, is believed to centre around bets placed in Brazil on yellow cards awarded against Paqueta. The former AC Milan player, who has said he did not place any bets, added: "West Ham have always supported me, there was no reason for them not to do what they did, which was nothing more than put their player out there to play soccer. "I'm happy to be helping, I hope to help at the end of the season." Paqueta has been a regular in David Moyes' side this season, with the Hammers seventh in the Premier League table while they face a Europa League quarter-final against Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen. He joined the Hammers from Lyon for £36.5m in August 2022 and was instrumental in the club winning the Europa Conference League. Paqueta was left out of former Brazil coach Fernando Diniz's squad for last year's World Cup qualifiers. With the arrival of Dorival Jr as head coach, the player has been recalled and could face England at Wembley at the weekend. "I'm happy for the call-up, for the recognition of my work," added Paqueta. "Being in the national team has always been my dream, the dream of every child." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/3/21/c87aba3e-fa49-4812-8774-e2c01e1f72b8.jpg

West Ham, Everton & Nottm Forest are monitoring 21-year-old winger Karamoko Dembele, who has impressed this season after joining Blackpool on loan from French club Brest. Here are some of your replies:
Iain: As a West Ham fan for more than 50 years, I am slightly fed up with all those fans calling for Moyes to be sacked! He's been our best manager since John Lyall and apart from some negativity in certain home matches against the lower-placed teams, has the team balanced and playing generally well. Give Moyes a break, West Ham fans. Harry: It’s hard to pick one thing that frustrates me with West Ham as they have been very inconsistent. But the late substitutions infuriate me. Also when we are finally playing attacking football and go ahead, Moyes changes to a defensive style of play which usually ends up with us conceding and throwing away the lead. Steve: Moyes. Where do you start? Won't give youth a chance. Boring football. Won't play with a striker. Flair players get bombed out. Players played out of position. Kalvin Phillips/£8m over four months. Total waste of money. BT: I wish that David Moyes was given a bit more support from the fans as IMO i think he has done a superb job with limited resourses. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/c/c2/West_Ham_United_FC_logo.svg/175px-West_Ham_United_FC_logo.svg.png

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/dddb/live/b61e9ff0-eeac-11ee-848d-8502df76512f.jpg David Moyes spoke to BBC Match of the Day after West Ham's loss to Newcastle: "We did a lot of good things but didn't defend well enough. We scored some good goals and we were a threat but in the end we conceded one more goal than they did. "We scored a minute into the second half but I don't think you can say we were in control at 3-1. As you know, Newcastle shooting down the way it is always tough. It's small margins. "I think a couple of decisions the referee made on penalty kicks. I think the second one, [Anthony] Gordon restricts Kalvin Phillips from kicking the ball. I actually think it's the wrong decision. We had so many things that didn't go in our favour today but there were a lot of good things the players did." On bouncing back: "It's not easy. We have lost a game when we should have won a game. In the Premier League. This is a tough place to come and for a long period we looked as though we were going to be the side who finished on top. We didn't see the job through and weren't tough enough. We had to be harder to play against and we didn't do that. "We all learn. Football always gives you another chance to try and win and hopefully we will try and do that in the next game." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/3/30/d7023213-5d93-4a2c-8a34-9a50ab2225db.jpgEddie Howe spoke to BBC Match of the Day after Newcastle's victory over West Ham: "It tells us we have some unbelievable professionals in there and we still have a spirit that we will never give up. It is a game we will never forget, it was a pleasure to be a part of it and I can't praise the players enough." On injuries: "It's been the story of our season. Unfortunately we were getting hit left right and centre today. We were 1-0 up and then Jamaal [Lascelles] goes off. Miggy [Almiron] goes off, Anthony [Gordon] is sent off, Tino [Livramento] goes off. It is a catalogue one after another but the players we brought on made a positive impact and that's the beauty of our squad." On Harvey Barnes: "He is an incredible player. We have missed him this season and he would have given us quality wherever he played. He is a goalscorer and they are so valuable and his two finishes today were of the highest quality. Of course, the last one was memorable and will always be remembered and what a finish it was. That's the quality he has."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/e3da/live/984cc190-ec50-11ee-9410-0f893255c2a0.jpgWe asked for your thoughts on Saturday's Premier League game between Newcastle and West Ham.
Here are some of your responses:
West Ham fans
Don: We capitulated. The subs on the 66th minute cost us the game. This is why so many of us are wanting a change at the top. Instead of killing off a weakened Newcastle, we invited them to shoot at will. And they did. VAR did us no favours either. Stanley: Once again we suffered poor refereeing as the penalty gave Newcastle the momentum. We also had Moyes putting on Phillips, who is yet to prove himself. Captain Zouma was one of our worst players again. Good attacking performance, terrible defending and terrible refereeing. Jonathan: It was the best match I've seen all season and we really should've won it. Some people are blaming the gaffer but I can't see how he can be held responsible for two penalties being conceded and the refereeing performance. We move on now against Tottenham on Tuesday, everyone needs to get behind the team and get us winning that one. Steve: I've been supporting the Hammers since 1975 and you never know what you are going to get from one game to the next, we can be world beaters one minute and lose to a L2 team in a cup match the next, i'm happy with 7th in the PL and still in europe...v Newcastle i said at 3-1 up i am confident of a point, Ah well.... upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/c/c2/West_Ham_United_FC_logo.svg/175px-West_Ham_United_FC_logo.svg.png

West Ham: Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou says West Ham's David Moyes is 'outstanding'..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/16FD/production/_133058850_gettyimages-1540342670.jpg West Ham are aiming to secure their third Premier League double over Tottenham, having done so in the 1998-99 and 2013-14 seasonsTottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has defended West Ham boss David Moyes, calling him "one of the outstanding managers in the game". West Ham host Spurs on Tuesday with Moyes looking to do the double over Tottenham after West Ham won 2-1 in December. But Moyes has come under fire from some sections of the West Ham support, who have called for him to be sacked. "I think he's an outstanding manager. I rate him so highly," said Postecoglou. "He is one of the ones I have always rated highly. Longevity in the game means something, especially at this level." Moyes led the Hammers to their first major trophy in 43 years as they beat Fiorentina to win the Europa Conference League in Prague in June. "Whether it was at Everton or the difficult job he had at Man U, he went abroad and has never stopped coaching," Postecoglou added. "I think he has done a brilliant job at West Ham and anyone that thinks otherwise... the team they are today, the players they've got there, they have some high-quality footballers in that team and I think they're going to get better. "I guess it's a bit of today's world we live in where there is always a short-term reflex to everything that happens, but I've got no doubt he is one of the outstanding managers in the game." A 'Moyes Out' banner was on show in the away end as West Ham fell to a 2-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest in February, a result which followed a 6-0 home loss to Arsenal a week earlier. And some fans were angered when Moyes' side lost 4-3 at Newcastle on Saturday after leading 3-1. Moyes is out of contract at the end of this season and the Scot said in February he had been offered a new deal but would "wait until the end of the season" before deciding on it.
