FT: West Ham 2-2 Liverpool

West Ham manager David Moyes talking to TNT Sports: "I think we did [bounce back well from last week]. I would have liked more than a point, we've drawn a lot and today is another. It is a good point and to be 2-1 down and take a battering, we did great to keep going." On the goals: "They were really good goals. I enjoyed them. Jarrod [Bowen] is in goalscoring form. Congratulations to him on 20 goals in all competitions. I think it is a long time since someone has done that at West Ham. He is a fantastic player. I hope he keeps going." On Jarrod Bowen equalling Di Canio's 16 goals in a Premier League season: "That is where I'd like the 20 goals, I'd like them to be 20 Premier League goals. I've got something for him to chase in the last three games." Michail Antonio: "He's got fitter in the last three or four months. We missed him around November time, he got an injury with Jamaica, but he's come back, led the line well and got a few goals for us, which was missing from his game a little." On the game as a whole: "They started the first half on fire, we couldn't get the ball. Everyone probably watched Everton-Liverpool and Everton were similar, compact and hard to play against. We did much of the same. The first goal was important for us. Great credit to the lads for the character they showed to come back from there."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/5c2d/live/f0878c70-0620-11ef-b9d8-4f52aebe147d.jpgBBC Sport's chief football news reporter Simon Stone has been answering your questions. Neil asked: Do you think it is time for David Moyes to move on, and who do you think should replace him if he does? Personally think it is time, as four wins in 2024 just is not good enough with our squad which he refuses to use. Simon replied: Well, there are a lot of names being linked with the job and it is also clear a lot of fans are not having David Moyes, no matter what he has done for the club. I can see both sides of the argument. Three successive European campaigns is unprecedented for West Ham. Top 10 Premier League finishes, which still looks likely, are not ‘the norm’. But I see fans want more attractive football. My issue with that is, do West Ham have the resource to build the kind of squad fans want? They have attractive players, but where is the back-up when those players are either injured or not playing well? The difference between a club like West Ham and Manchester City is that City can spend £50m on a player then stick them on the bench. West Ham can’t do that. Brighton are struggling for the same reason this season. I am not going to say ‘be careful what you wish for’ because no-one can look into the future. But putting together football teams is not as simple as it appears sometimes. The young lads have done well at Under-18 and Under-21 level but if they were good enough, they would be playing.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/5442/live/b8928890-fcc2-11ee-97f7-e98b193ef1b8.jpgWe asked for your views on Saturday's match between West Ham United and Liverpool.
Here are some of your answers:
West Ham fans
Harry: I'll take a draw. We should have scored maybe two or three goals in the first half, but deserved the opener through a great header by Bowen. A terrible start to the second half, conceding two goals within 20 minutes, but we made up for it with a good header by Antonio. The result keeps us in the talk for Europe. Steve: As a team, we drop too far back and invite teams to attack us. Bowen and Kudus were the outstanding performers, in my opinion, for the Hammers but our defence was very shaky again. It was just a good job that Liverpool didn’t take their chances. It is time for Moyes to go - he has taken us as far as he can and his tactics have had their day. John: It wasn’t a bad performance, but it was typical of the season. We just can’t seem to hang on to a lead. We have also conceded more goals than anyone outside the bottom three. For a pragmatic manager, that is poor. David Moyes has made mistakes, but it has been with a very thin squad. I'm on the fence. Mo: Well done, Hammers. We would have gladly taken 2-2, if offered that result before the match. It shows what we can do, with disciplined defensive organisation. European qualification is still a possibility. We are not a rich club but we have brought in good players, astutely, recently. Please, please, please stay Moyes! ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/852a/live/ee464e20-04a3-11ef-82e8-cd354766a224.jpg

Steidten is leading the hunt for a new manager, which has seen the Hammers linked with Julen Lopetegui, Paulo Fonseca and Ruben Amorim in recent days. Wolves boss Gary O'Neil - a former West Ham player - has also been mentioned. Given he still has a job and is not due to have his own talks about the future with the West Ham hierarchy until after the season has ended, Moyes has concluded it is potentially disruptive to have Steidten around. This is understandable - but it hardly smacks of a harmonious situation. West Ham do still have - albeit very slim - a chance of qualifying for Europe for a fourth successive season. And if they hold on to their present ninth position, it would represent their joint-seventh highest finish in almost 40 years. However, many fans have been critical of the style of play under Moyes and it seems inevitable he will leave London Stadium at the end of the season.

Moyes has repeatedly fended off questions about whether he will remain at the club, saying talks will not take place until after the final game at Manchester City on 19th May. Whilst that is still the plan, BBC Sport understands there is a small possibility of West Ham reaching an earlier conclusion on Moyes’ tenure. Talks with Lopetegui have been positive, although sources are adamant no decision has been made on Moyes and the final outcome will be what is regarded as being the best for the team. The uncertainty over Moyes has bemused many outsiders, who question why the respected Scot is under so much pressure as he closes in on what would be a third top-half finish in four full seasons at the London Stadium. He presided over three successive European campaigns for the first time in the club’s history and last June ended the Hammers' 43-year wait for a trophy with a last-minute victory over Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final. However, many fans are critical of what they view as Moyes’ negative tactics. Lopetegui has been without a job since leaving Wolves on the eve of the current campaign, believing promises made over the playing budget had not been kept. The former Spain and Real Madrid coach has been linked with numerous jobs since and is thought to be keen on returning to the Premier League after guiding Wolves to safety last term, having joined them when they were bottom of the table. It is known other options are being considered. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/3/f963045a-4a78-42d7-8000-0ce0d2d3ec83.jpg

Chelsea v West Ham - Sunday 2pm

West Ham manager David Moyes on if he still has the hunger to take the club forward: "Absolutely - football hunger. I'm nearly a bit embarrassed to be asked that question, for you because I'm a football nut. I love my football, go to games, love it, really do. I have got a great hunger." On if he will be at West Ham next season: "I said to everybody that we will make a decision at the end of the season." West Ham manager David Moyes on how far his team have come since winning the reverse fixture in August:
"It was a brilliant start to the season for us, beating Chelsea. We won at Brighton as well. It was a brilliant start and got us off in a good way especially after losing Declan [Rice to Arsenal]. "If we could pick up another three points here it would be great. It's tight. We are in a good league position - we have been for most of the season. "We are going to have to win some of the remaining games to stay there or even jump up." West Ham manager David Moyes on whether this weekend's match against Chelsea is almost a European play-off given the state of the table: "You're talking about Chelsea who, let us be fair, have been European champions, have won trophies, many many more than we have - we've won one last year. "It's actually a big compliment to say we are challenging to be a team going for Europe. Obviously, it's not the Champions League, I wish it was, but it says a lot that that is the situation." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/3/e4ea0109-da5a-4b22-bb2c-56468ab2844f.png

Analysis: Chelsea 5-0 West Ham..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/d732/live/09160560-0af8-11ef-8903-6fd5d1e79cfa.jpg
West Ham boss David Moyes to BBC MOTD: "We've had one or two this season which have hurt just as much as this one. "Today's was sore - we did a lot of things wrong today generally. Mainly doing your own jobs, doing the jobs correctly. If you've done the jobs correctly, then we wouldn't have been so bad. "We played a lot better in the second-half but we gave away two diabolical goals in the second half which wouldn't have made much difference. "But, when you hit the bar three times at Chelsea, when you have a great chance to score - it wasn't that it was a day where we didn't have opportunities but nearly everything we have done was not done particularly well." "I was livid with the goals we gave away - people not in the right positions, people not doing their jobs well enough. "It wasn't as if we didn't have a go or try. The second-half obviously we had to try and shut up shop and didn't want to concede anymore goals. That's why I'm happier because at least we did a better job in that way but we still conceded two goals. "We've just not had good enough protection in front of the back four and then we've not done well enough. "We're just lacking a real mental toughness when needed." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/508b/live/c83b9060-0b0a-11ef-903b-d189d3d05396.jpgManager David Moyes said he feels "really sorry" for West Ham fans after watching his side fall to a 5-0 loss at the hands of Chelsea. "The fans have been great but I feel bad for them," Moyes told Sky Sports. "I don't normally have teams who get beaten like this but we are lacking some ingredients - mental toughness and leadership to get better results, or at least not get hammered. "The fans played their part and I can only say I'm really sorry for how it played out." "We've had too many games this season where we haven't shown any toughness, togetherness, leadership, or taken ownership of the performance," Moyes said. "I'm the manager so I take ownership of that but sometimes the players have to take responsibility as well."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/8f59/live/900d8910-0b9a-11ef-bee9-6125e244a4cd.pngWith the news that former Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui is set to become the new West Ham manager after agreeing a deal in principle with the club, David Moyes' second spell in charge of the Hammers could soon be coming to an end. It would bring to a close what has been ultimately a successful time with the club, keeping them in the Premier League and leading them to their first piece of silverware in 43 years with the Europa Conference League trophy last season. He also broke club records during this second stint in the dugout, winning a record 19 Premier League matches and amassing a record 65 points in 2020-21 with another record +15 goal difference on their way to a sixth-place finish. The 61-year-old has managed them in three seasons in Europe, with a memorable run to the Europa League semi-finals in 2021-22 and that first European trophy last season. Moyes has come under increasing scrutiny this campaign, with recent heavy defeats taking them out of contention for another season in Europe and his style of play being a bone of contention among West Ham supporters. With his contract up at the end of the season and Lopetegui now waiting in the wings, Hammers fans look set to see whether the grass really is greener on the other side.

How did Lopetegui fare at Wolves ?...Phil Cartwright, BBC Sport journalist.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/f2e5/live/8d1acb60-0b99-11ef-9973-d38818507d0a.jpgJulen Lopetegui's only previous experience of managing in England was his nine months in charge of Wolves, which ended a few days before the start of the current season. He arrived at Molineux in November 2022, just before the World Cup break, with Wolves bottom of the Premier League and four points from safety. Aided by some astute signings during the January transfer window, Lopetegui guided Wolves to a final position of 13th, with the team taking 31 points from his 23 league games in charge. Nine of those 23 games were victories, including memorable home successes against Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea and Aston Villa. Form at Molineux was pivotal to their survival. Utilising a back four with two holding midfield players for most of their matches under the former Real Madrid and Spain boss, a defensively-solid Wolves kept clean sheets in seven of their 11 home league fixtures after Lopetegui's appointment. Four of the seven goals they conceded in those games came in a horrid capitulation against Leeds. Only 23 goals were scored in those 23 league outings, however, and as good as their home results were, picking up points away from Molineux was more of a struggle. The two victories, at Everton and Southampton, came courtesy of late winners. A dismal 6-0 loss at Brighton in April was a particular low point of his reign, as was the 5-0 defeat at Arsenal on the final day of the season. Lopetegui's departure came after public complaints by the Spaniard regarding Wolves' summer transfer policy, and he left in August 2023 following what were described at the time as "differences of opinion on certain issues" - although it was also said that the split between the parties was an amicable one. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/105b/live/dd356a40-0b96-11ef-9973-d38818507d0a.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/ae8b/live/f62e9470-0ba2-11ef-b9d8-4f52aebe147d.jpgBBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty has been answering your questions on all things Premier League.Paul asked: Am I the only one who thinks West Ham have been punching above for a few seasons now? Looking at teams and squads above, in and around, I would say overall they are doing well. I understand the gripe from fans with the style of play, but, results-wise, I think ninth is about right with the quality of squads above them. David Moyes is a goner, but I can't see the next man doing that much better, if at all. Seems playing more exciting football would be better than good results for some West Ham fans. Phil answered: I agree with much of that, Paul. I do think David Moyes has done a very good job at West Ham United and brought them a European trophy and yet I do not think he gets the credit he deserves. I do think the time has come for change because it all seems pretty joyless for everyone at West Ham and things do sometimes run their course. You make a good point, though. I'll be very interested to see if the manager who replaces Moyes (Julen Lopetgui) does any better than him. And if playing more attractive football but finishing lower in the Premier League makes their fans any happier. I do think the time has come for Moyes to leave West Ham, but hopefully people will not forget what he achieved for them. He can be proud of his work there.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/0135/live/8c51b370-3b6e-11ee-bde6-7ffba94c56ae.jpgBy James Jones who can be found at We Are West Ham..Even though the club still has not announced it, it is expected that David Moyes will leave West Ham this summer. It is unfortunate his tenure is ending under a cloud of toxicity, though, because what he has achieved since replacing Manuel Pellegrini in December 2019 will go down as heroic in years to come. We all know the story - how Moyes returned for his second spell with the club just outside the bottom three on goal difference and within four years has West Ham as regular top-six contenders, seasoned European contenders and - unbelievably - European champions (of some sort). It is such an outstanding change in fortune for West Ham that it is little wonder fans are now feeling restless and frustrated at the way in which this season is ending, and the 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Chelsea on Sunday may have pushed even the most loyal Moyes fans over the edge. The fact is that fans are upset and frustrated, not only because of the style of play or the failure to build a big enough squad to compete on all fronts, but also because this season started with so much promise and is ending with barely any fight left from the manager and players. We spent two weeks at the top of the Premier League in August and September and ended 2023 with wins over Arsenal and Manchester United to sit comfortably in sixth place going into the second half of the campaign. So, to build on that with just three league wins post-Christmas and end up with a likely ninth-placed finish is bitterly disappointing. But fans must acknowledge what has come before and give Moyes the perfect send-off in his last home game against Luton on Saturday. The fact we are all upset with a ninth-placed finish is testament to the job he has done. He has raised the bar and he has raised our expectations, but he will leave with the highest win percentage of any manager in the club's entire history - currently 45% - and has given us fans so many unexpected and priceless memories in the process. He deserves respect and appreciation for that, even if it is clear he should not continue as manager.

West Ham's owners have "messed" David Moyes around and could have shown him "more respect", says former Premier League striker Chris Sutton.i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article32747868.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/0_ACF-Fiorentina-v-West-Ham-United-FC-UEFA-Europa-Conference-League-Final-202223.jpgThe Hammers announced on Monday that Moyes will leave at the end of the season, with former Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui lined up as a replacement. Sutton said the owners had been "sucked in" by a section of the fanbase who are "entitled" and want "fantasy football". "To an extent, every football fan now wants this Pep [Guardiola] brand of football," Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club. "It's not realistic." In February, Moyes said he had been offered a new deal to stay as West Ham boss - but would wait until the end of the season to make a decision on his future. In April, Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim apologised for holding talks with West Ham, saying it was a "mistake" - and Sutton believes ongoing speculation about Moyes' future has resulted in a downturn in results. The Hammers have won just one of their past nine Premier League games. "I think subconsciously players switch off," said Sutton. "I don't think it has been helpful the fact David Moyes has been messed around by the owners and I think it has had a knock-on effect. "I just think they may have got this badly wrong. "There will be West Ham fans expecting the world next season, expecting them to push on, expecting them to be more expansive and I would be surprised if it's any better than it has been under David Moyes. "The owners have got sucked in to the fact that there is a section of the fanbase who are entitled and they want fantasy football. That's the long and the short of it. "I just think it could have been handled better and he could have been shown more respect." Moyes' final home game in charge will be against relegation-threatened Luton on Saturday (15:00 BST kick-off). Hatters winger Andros Townsend believes West Ham's owners were right to announce Moyes' departure before the end of the season. "There are rumours as soon as West Ham go on a bit of a bad run - 'Oh, Moyes is going to get replaced'," Townsend told the Monday Night Club. "I think they [the owners] have done the right thing. They have waited until the season has petered out." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/af00/live/e056cd40-0c40-11ef-88c9-b971c42a2660.jpg

FT: West Ham 3-1 Luton ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/8f31/live/2f5620d0-110f-11ef-a190-bb979758150a.jpg
West Ham manager David Moyes: "When you are in Luton's situation once you concede a goal it feels hard to hang on. That first goal took the stuffing out of them. "George Earthy has been special for a long time. When you're that size, lightweight, you need to be given time to develop but he's a terrifiic football player. He has trained really well and he's been close to the team. Today he gets a goal and it's great for him. "I go away from here with great memories, the club is a brilliant club and has so much room for improvement. It can step up again and I hope that they do. The crowds here are huge, we had a great crowd today. I have lots of great memories here. We have beaten a lot of the bigger sides at home and the biggest thing is that West Ham are back on the map." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/11/4615a469-9564-422d-9e7c-54de3a68c4e3.jpgWest Ham boss David Moyes to Match of the Day: "I needed to win after last week, that is for sure. We weren't so good in the first half but we altered it and we needed the goal which took the stuffing out of Luton. "George Earthy came on and got the goal which is great for the boy, he's a local boy and a fan of the club. "I was subdued today because I knew what the other manager was going through. The effort Luton have put in has been huge, they have kept it going until the last day of the season. I feel bad for Rob Edwards today. "There was huge emotion there for me, to be a manager of such a great club. When you think you've done a good job it's great to see people applaud you and we have done a pretty good job here. "We have given them some really big nights and there has been progress made. I'm looking forward to seeing the next steps for West Ham." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/594/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/11/64d37438-a468-42f3-8e25-5156187dde4d.jpgDavid Moyes' final game as West Ham manager will be at Manchester City on Sunday.Having enjoyed the perfect end to his home tenure at the London Stadium with the comeback victory against virtually relegated Luton, I put it to Moyes that his last task could well be to try and stop City winning the Premier League title. "It would be difficult to stop their Under-14s winning the title," he joked. "Professional is the word I would use. We will try and do the best we can." City do have form for making life difficult for themselves on the final day - but they have always got the job done before.

'Will West Ham come to rue Moyes' exit... again?'..Pat Nevin, Former Scotland and Chelsea winger.i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article32644148.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/1_FBL-EUR-C4-WEST-HAM-PARADE.jpgDavid Moyes said goodbye to West Ham with his last home game against Luton and 3-1 was a pretty good send off. He also introduced young George Earthy who scored with his first touch, adding to the legacy Moyes is leaving. Will there be a great wailing and gnashing of teeth in east London when the Scotsman has gone? Maybe not in the short term, but will they come to rue this day, as they have before? They have been a comfortable mid to upper table side under Davie, I can call him that as we have known each other since we were young teenagers at Celtic. So yes I may be a bit biased, but for a club that have finished sixth, seventh and ninth, with a 14th thrown in the year they won their first European trophy, this could be either a brave gamble or possibly misguided optimism. As for Moyes, he is still eminently employable as a Premier League manager, he still has the desire and is young and fit enough. It may well be he takes that time honoured roll of firefighter, called in to save struggling sides from relegation. Sam Allardyce, now Sean Dyche and even for a while Roy Hodgson were the go-to emergency services. It can be hugely rewarding in that celebrations for staying up are joyous, the payments aren’t shabby either and even if you fail, it is still the previous manager's fault. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/6d11/live/01be5680-1103-11ef-9964-93440ec69286.jpgHe may not be departing in the blaze of glory he would have done had he decided to leave after winning the Europa League last summer, but few could begrudge David Moyes' status as a modern West Ham legend. Since qualifying for the Europa League in the first full season of his second spell in charge, the Hammers have played European football for three successive seasons - crowned by that historic night in Prague where Moyes secured the club its first European silverware since 1965. Moyes has overseen the club's most successful period in Premier League history and leaves having delivered nights that will live forever in West Ham folklore. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/74b7/live/ea6e3580-1103-11ef-b9d8-4f52aebe147d.pngWhether Moyes returns to manage in the Premier League is likely going to be up to him. It is hard to imagine him not being a top candidate for openings that may appear both over the summer and during next season. Much will hinge on his hunger to continue. The Scottish manager has taken charge of the third-most games in Premier League history since arriving at Everton 22 years ago. He has cut a fatigued figure at times this season as West Ham's form became inconsistent and discontent from the stands grew. A rest is deserved and if this is it for Moyes' managerial career, he will take his place as one of the most consistently successful bosses in Premier League history.

Here are some of your answers:
West Ham fans
Mike: I feel for Luton fans. Wanted them to stay up but really pleased David Moyes got a final home win. Irrespective of the animosity this season - which I have sympathy with - he has been amazing for us. European tours and one amazing night in Prague. I waited 60 years for that. Thank you sir. You leave us better than you found us. Harry: Great victory. At half-time I thought we were going to lose but we managed to produce a good comeback. Good enough to maybe score four or five and a great display in Moyes' final home game. Let's hope we get a win against City and give the gaffer a good send off. And then hope Lopetegui can do as good a job. Graza: If you could have written a script to sum up West Ham under Moyes, you'd have that game. First half abject, couldn't pass, couldn't shoot and should have been more than one down. Second half a completely different team, dynamite on the break and get the result. Summer is all important, especially recruitment. We'll see what happens. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/529f/live/2a93ada0-0e18-11ef-b9eb-dbbc39eb6212.jpg
