Ivan Perisic: Tottenham winger expected to be out for season after knee injury..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/976/cpsprodpb/5391/production/_131139312_gettyimages-1585169228.jpg Ivan Perisic was signed by former Spurs manager Antonio Conte, with whom he won the Serie A title at Inter Milan in 2020-21Tottenham winger Ivan Perisic is expected to miss the rest of the season after suffering a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury. The experienced Croatia international, 34, sustained the injury during non-contact training, his club confirmed. He is set to undergo surgery on his right knee before commencing his rehabilitation in north London. Perisic joined Tottenham on a two-year deal from Inter Milan in 2022 and his contract is set to expire next July. Spurs are unbeaten in five Premier League matches under new manager Ange Postecoglou this season, winning four and drawing once to sit second in the table. Perisic, a Champions League winner with Bayern Munich in 2019-20 and Italian champion with Inter Milan in 2020-21, is unlikely to add to his five substitute appearances so far in the 2023-24 campaign.

We wanted 'Angeball' back. During this time, the Rugby World Cup started. Now the only reason I bring this up is to point out the stark contrast in officiating between the sports - because, quite frankly, football could learn a thing or two. I try my best not to let the referee's decisions affect my overall attitude during the game, but that was almost impossible on Saturday. I really wish officials in football were required to wear microphones, so they could explain their decisions and also be held accountable for them. I think clearer communication, allowing for a conversation to happen between referee and players (maybe not all of them at once) and explaining decisions would go a long way in improving the sport. On a more positive note, Richarlison got his first goal at home, almost as if he was rewarded for opening up about his mental health issues from recent times. I really hope this is the start of a new and better chapter for him. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/afaf/live/4fd9fab0-56bc-11ee-ba95-9fc479309a95.jpgThe commitment the players showed, the unreal support from the fans and the desire to play until the final whistle all ensured that we continued the unbeaten league record under Ange Postecoglou. We have a tough couple of games coming up, but anything can happen as long as we dare to do.

Sunday 24th September 2023 - Arsenal 2 (Romero 26 og, Saka 54) Tottenham Hotspur 2 (Son Heung-min 42, 55) - Full-time score
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/032E/production/_131241800_gettyimages-1698771187.jpg Son Heung-min (second from right) twice levelled for Spurs away to their north London rivals ArsenalTottenham came from behind twice to secure a hard-earned point in the north London derby against Arsenal in a thriller at Emirates Stadium. In a relentless encounter, Arsenal took the lead after 26 minutes when Bukayo Saka's shot was deflected into his own goal by Spurs defender Cristian Romero. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had made the big decision by keeping David Raya in of goal ahead of Aaron Ramsdale and he justified that faith with two fine saves from Brennan Johson as Spurs went in pursuit of an equaliser. Raya should have done better, however, when Spurs levelled three minutes before half-time. He could only claw away a cross allowing an attack to continue, ending with James Maddison crossing for Son Heung-min to equalise with a deft finish. Arsenal restored their lead after 54 minutes when Romero was penalised for handball following the intervention of the Video Assistant Referee, Saka scoring from the spot. Spurs, illustrating their new positive approach under manager Ange Postecoglou in his first north London derby, were back on terms almost instantly when Jorginho, as a half-time substitute for the injured Declan Rice, lost possession to Maddison, who played in Son for another cool finish. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/15E72/production/_131241798_gettyimages-1698772458.jpg

"I thought performance-wise we had to show a bit of everything we've got. They're a good, top team and we had to defend at times. But I thought we showed real courage and bravery just to keep playing our football. We certainly pressed aggressively. "I thought we were unfortunate with both of the goals, an own goal and a penalty, but great character to come from behind, in a difficult place, twice. "That's four away games we've had in difficult venues. We've gone behind at three of them but had a brilliant response. They're a top team, particularly here at home. We know how hard they are to beat. "This side is growing. In terms of our football, we're still at the beginning but I'm so impressed with the character we're showing, particularly as a group. "It's just further evidence that we're having an encouraging start. We're only six games into building our side here." On Arsenal's penalty decision: "I didn't see it. I saw the one that was given yesterday. I don't know what the handball rules are. It's pretty much if it hits your hand it's a penalty these days, even with guys shooting from a metre away. "But anyway, he gave it. Like I said, it seems like there needed to be forensic evidence to give it.”

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/cb7d/live/c150c450-4265-11ee-9b58-cb80889117a8.jpgWe asked for your views on Saturday's game between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.
Here are some of your comments:
Tottenham fansEdward: At last Spurs have arrived. I am speaking for all Spurs fans. We have been through a lot these past few years and right now we have a club worth supporting. This was a real test to see how good we are and not that this is just a quick flash in the pan. We have beaten Liverpool and drawn with a very good Arsenal team. Let's go further! Jack: This was an important step in the journey Ange is taking Spurs on. They look a completely different team showing quality, determination and, most importantly, a faith in a football philosophy. Greg: They have been great this season, but it worries me that they could not break down nine men and only won via an own goal. They should not have been celebrating like they did, but asking some tough questions. Andy: That was a game of the highest quality - the way we moved the ball around, especially from the back. With Bissouma bossing it and Maddison with his ability to turn a game on its head with a moment of genius. I’ve never felt prouder of my team!. The red cards were right, but Diaz was onside. But hey, I’m not complaining! Liverpool fansKate: Liverpool were absolutely amazing, especially after going down to 10, then nine men. Solidarity, organisation and fight -I couldn’t be more proud of them. Only a horrendous VAR decision and a cruel own goal gave Spurs the win, which was not deserved in the slightest. Both red cards were questionable and the officiating in the game was equally as bad. Jayne: The match officials' decisions were disgraceful. What a huge injustice it would be if, when we get to the end of the season, Liverpool are one point off the top. Liverpool players showed real spirit when they had so much against them. Since the introduction of VAR, refereeing seems to be utterly inconsistent and needs addressing. Abraham: We can win the Premier League this season. The Spurs match was an opportunity for us to go top after Manchester City lost and our boys did their best. Sadly, bad officiating got in the way. We are only two points behind leaders City, which is fine by me at this stage. Pieter: I'm disappointed that Liverpool lost, but am I disheartened? No. Losing to an own goal with 30 seconds left in added time after playing the last 27 minutes with nine players shows how poor Tottenham are. Seven months before we play Spurs at Anfield - going to be counting down to the hammering that we traditionally give them.

Here are some of your comments:Pazza: Brilliant that we're not being considered for the title even though we're top. We will see at Christmas where we stand, but up until now we have been awesome, possibly the best team in the Premier League. Consider a new manager and losing Kane, and it ramps up to unbelievable. Alan: Excellent start playing the Tottenham way - attacking, exciting football. Just need the board to support the manager and get more depth in the squad, which is too thin at the moment. As a fan of over 60 years, I'm not getting carried away as I've been disappointed many times before. I'm just enjoying the football being served up and the fighting spirit of the team. Jim: Same old problem of not being able to put defensive teams away. Far too many missed chances, we should have been three up by half-time. Richarlison is currently a waste of a shirt. Stephen: Steel determination and grit. When have we been able to say that about Spurs before? This is what Ange has bought to the club, and the players are going with him. Great victory - would've lost this game before going down to 10 men. Long may it last. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/c63b/live/1658a2e0-66b7-11ee-a0c8-ab8a89e71afa.jpgWe asked you what you think Tottenham should be aiming for this season after their fast start in the Premier League.
Here is a flavour of your responses:
Herman: Keep playing attractive football and we'll see where it ends. I'm satisfied if I can enjoy every football match they play. Paul: Great start to the season, but our position flatters us a little. We've not got the strength in depth and too many players (and the manager) are new to the Premier League. I expect us to be top six this year, top four would be a massive achievement. It would be good to get a favourable run in the cup also. Peter: They have started extremely well, and it is amazing that the pundits do not include Spurs in their opinions when talking about who will win the league. I think they have as good a chance as any if their form carries on. Calum: I think most Spurs fans would have taken a top-six finish at the beginning of the season. New manager, new players in key positions, and no Harry Kane. A new system in place, which we expected to take time to settle. I think most if not all Spurs fans don’t expect us to be near the top two or three come the end of the season, but with five going into the Champions League, a top-five finish would be superb! Isaac: I don't see why Spurs can't contend. No Europe and no cup games, so only the Premier League games to focus on. Hopefully Spurs can get some needed additions in January and who knows where we will end up. Chelsea did this a few years back, finished 11th and then the following season went on and won the league. Hopefully Spurs can do the same.

Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeness says the German club paid £82m (95m euros) to sign striker Harry Kane from Spurs in the summer rather than the £85m (100m euros) plus add-ons widely quoted.

Friday 27th October 2023 - Crystal Palace 1 Tottenham Hotspur 2 (Ward og, Son)
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/FA19/production/_131552046_tottenham.jpg James Maddison's cross was bundled into his own net by Palace defender Joel Ward for the openerTottenham Hotspur moved five points clear at the top of the Premier League table and continued their superb start to the season with a win at Crystal Palace. The visitors took control after the break and benefitted from a huge slice of fortune with the opener when Palace defender Joel Ward turned James Maddison's cross into his own net. Maddison was key to the second too as his interplay with Brennan Johnson ended with Son Heung-min firing home his eighth goal of the season. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/16F49/production/_131552049_maddisonandson.jpgJames Maddison and Son Heung-min have been in superb form for Tottenham so far this season
Jordan Ayew thumped in a stunning strike after taking the ball down on his chest in stoppage time for Palace, but there was to be no equaliser as Tottenham secured yet another victory under new boss Ange Postecoglou. The Australian has breathed new life into his side since joining from Celtic in the summer and this win extended Spurs' run to eight wins and two draws from their opening 10 games. The victory means Tottenham move on to 26 points, five ahead of Manchester City and Arsenal, who both have a game in hand and can close the gap over the weekend. "Every week is a different challenge," Postecoglou told BBC Sport. "The key for us was to be disciplined, focused and persistent in our play and we did that. I think the spell between the first and second goal we were dominant and played some really good football and then still think the lads handled [the end of the match] well. "We haven't faced that situation this year and there was a really clear-headedness about the team. There was no rushing and panic which is a good sign." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/ABF9/production/_131552044_tottenham.jpg

Maurico Pochettino: Return to Tottenham will be 'really special', says Chelsea manager..i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/sport/article31356286.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/0_Mauricio-PochettinoJPG.jpgMauricio Pochettino says it will be "really special" to return to a club he created "amazing memories" with when his Chelsea side travel to Tottenham. The Argentine spent five years as Spurs manager before he was sacked in 2019 and led the club to its first Champions League final earlier that year. He will return to the north London club for the first time in four years with Chelsea on Monday night 8pm. "For me, it will be a happy day," Pochettino, 51, said on Friday. "We are professional but at the same time we are human and we feel. "It's really special to go back to a place where we created amazing memories together. It's special, I'm not going to lie. That is true. "When we left the club it was a difficult moment but now I have the opportunity to come back and see many people who are still working there. It will be an exciting moment." i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article31338510.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/0_Mauricio-Pochettino-14.jpgAsked whether going back to league leaders Tottenham, whom he considers title contenders this season, would feel similar to seeing a former partner, Pochettino joked: "It's difficult because nearly 32 years with my wife and I don't know if I remember or even if I had a girlfriend before."
Following his Tottenham departure, former Espanyol boss Pochettino took over at Paris St-Germain in 2021, where he claimed the first trophies of his managerial career by winning the 2021 Coupe de France and 2022 Ligue 1 title.
He returned to the Premier League with six-time English champions Chelsea in July, tasked with improving the Blues' fortunes following a disappointing 12th-place finish last season.
In a match remembered as the 'Battle of the Bridge', it was at Chelsea in 2016 that Pochettino's Tottenham saw their Premier League title challenge ended by their London rivals, who fought back from 2-0 down to confirm Leicester City's remarkable triumph.
While Pochettino said he is unsure what reaction he will receive on his return to the club as Chelsea manager, he insisted that would not affect his own feelings towards Tottenham.
"I'm not going to say anything at the moment. Until Monday, we can't guess," Pochettino said.
"We can't forget everything we lived together and I'm going to respect the people and how they feel. It won't change my emotions, my feelings about a club where we had an unbelievable journey.
"I always said that the only clubs I would never manage are Arsenal, because they are considered the worst enemy for Tottenham, and Barcelona, because of Espanyol."

Monday 6th November 2023 - Premier League..
Tottenham Hotspur 1 (Kulusevski 6, Romero 33 sent off, Udogie 55 sent off) Chelsea 4 ( Palmer 35 pen, Jackson 35, 90+4, 90+7)
ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/1440/cpsprodpb/E12B/production/_131634675_gettyimages-1767721944.jpg
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/14C29/production/_131633058_romero_reuters.png Cristian Romero has been sent off four times for Tottenham since joining just over a year agoMauricio Pochettino made a winning return to Tottenham with Chelsea as his former club were reduced to nine men on a night of chaos and controversy. The Argentine's comeback was reduced to a minor sub-plot by an epic game which brought five goals, a further five which were disallowed, two red cards, and a slew of VAR decisions in one of the Premier League's most frenetic ever encounters. Spurs started brilliantly and deservedly went ahead when Dejan Kulusevski's sixth minute shot deflected in off Chelsea defender Levi Colwill, before Son Heung-min had an effort narrowly ruled out for offside as the home side looked to capitalise on their early dominance. In a fevered atmosphere Chelsea had two goals of their own disallowed, one each from Raheem Sterling and Moises Caicedo ruled out for handball and offside respectively. But the latter situation still led to a Chelsea goal as a penalty was awarded for a crude challenge by Romero on compatriot Enzo Fernandez, and the Spurs defender was deservedly sent off in the aftermath. Summer signing Cole Palmer scored the resulting spot-kick to level the match before Spurs were also handicapped by what looked like a serious hamstring injury for key defender Micky van de Ven and an ankle problem for James Maddison as both players were substituted before the interval. Spurs were battling an even greater disadvantage when Destiny Udogie was sent off ten minutes after the break for an inexplicably reckless tackle on Sterling which brought a second yellow card from referee Michael Oliver. Ange Postecoglou, who also received a yellow card on the Spurs bench amid the mayhem, gambled on keeping a high line even with nine men but Chelsea finally broke their resistance with 15 minutes left, Raheem Sterling breaking clear to set up Nicolas Jackson for a simple finish. The game was far from finished, though, and Spurs came close to securing a stunning draw as Eric Dier had a superb finish ruled out for a narrow offside and Rodrigo Bentancur headed just wide after beating Chelsea's defensive line at a late free-kick. Jackson then scored twice more in stoppage time to secure a late hat-trick and render the scoreline far more comfortable than the evening had been for the visitors. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/11/6/5cc46b86-b70f-4651-bd9a-7c8842e0583e.jpgTottenham boss Ange Postecoglou speaking to Sky Sports: "It is pretty hard to process. It is almost impossible to analyse the game because it just seemed to get out of control for large parts of it. Disappointed by the result but really proud of the players, they gave everything and that is the positive we will take. "We were very close to getting an equaliser a couple of times and it shows their spirit. It was just a bridge too far today. "I thought we started really well, scored a great goal and inches away from another. The red card affected the game, I felt like I was standing around waiting for things to happen, with VAR intervention. It felt like a lot of standing around." On penalty and sending off: "They had a good look at it and given it so I have to accept it." More from Ange Postecoglou on VAR decisions: "There will be a forensic study of every decision out there, I think that is the way the game is going and I don't like it. If you look at all that standing around we did today, maybe people enjoy that sort of thing but I'd rather see us playing football." On Tottenham sending offs: "You have to accept the referee's decision, that is how I grew up. This constant erosion of the referee's authority is where the game is going to get - they are not going to have any authority. We are going to be under the control of someone with a tv screen a few miles away. "The decision is the decision. In 26 years I have had plenty of bad decisions, I have had plenty fall in my favour. It is what it is." On playing with a high line down to nine men: "It is just who we are mate, it is who we are and who we will be for as long as I am here. If we go down to five men we will have a go." Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, speaking to BBC Sport: "There was a fair bit going on, a lot of VAR intervention, a hard game for me to analyse but I am very proud of the players. Right to the end they were trying to create something for us. "The players couldn't give any more than they did, part of this game is will, effort and determination and they showed that." On VAR decisions and time taken to make them: "I don't like it, it is the way the game is going. Some of it is self inflicted because if we come out every week complaining about decision that is what will happen, every decision gets forensically checked and we will be sitting around for a long time in every game trying to figure out what is going on. "I don't like it but I am probably in the wilderness with that because I keep getting told that's where we want to go. I am too old school, I'll respect the referee's decision right or wrong. But it is the way the game is going. On Maddison injury: "He got a knock on the ankle, we were down one man already. It made sense to make a couple of changes at that point."

Son Heung-min: Crystal Palace fan gets three-year ban for racially abusing Tottenham forward..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/A658/production/_131648524_gettyimages-1780684735.jpg Son Heung-min was named as Tottenham's captain for the 2023-24 seasonA Crystal Palace fan has received a three-year ban from football for racially abusing Tottenham and South Korea forward Son Heung-min. Robert Garland pleaded guilty to racially aggravated harassment in August after shouting and gesturing towards Son in May. He was initially sentenced to 60 hours of unpaid work and fined £1,384. However, Spurs and the Metropolitan Police appealed to the UK Football Policing Unit over the sentence. "The Metropolitan Police, supported by the club, approached the UK Football Policing Unit to seek an appeal against the sentence and, as a direct result, the court issued the supporter with a three-year football banning order," Tottenham said in a statement on Wednesday. "We thank the police for their cooperation on the matter. We should like to reiterate that the club does not tolerate discrimination of any kind and will always seek for the strongest possible action to be taken against those found responsible." Garland, 44, made the racial gesture after Son was substituted in the 89th minute during Tottenham's 1-0 home win over Crystal Palace on 6 May 2023. Son told the police that he did "nothing to be targeted with this horrible racist and discriminatory behaviour", according to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). Kevin Christie from the CPS added: "This case shows that hate crime at football will not be tolerated. "Garland's actions were rightly condemned on social media and we call on all fans to carry on calling out any form of discriminatory behaviour against players or fans to the police or stewards so we can take cases like this to court." The Premier League said it "welcomed" the banning order, which means Garland will not be able to go to any regulated match for three years and will need to surrender his passport when international fixtures are scheduled. "It is vital that those found guilty of discriminatory behaviour are held to account, and this punishment sends a clear message that action will be taken and there are consequences," the Premier League said in a statement on Tuesday. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/0E00/production/_131648530_gettyimages-1231017938-1.jpg

Ange Postecoglou: Tottenham boss wins third manager of month award to make Premier League history..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/175DB/production/_131670759_gettyimages-1778786537.jpg Ange Postecoglou led Tottenham to their best start after 10 games in the Premier LeagueTottenham's Ange Postecoglou has become the first boss to begin his career in England with a hat-trick of Premier League manager of the month awards. The Australian, 58, is also the first manager to claim the first three monthly awards from the start of any Premier League season. Spurs had wins against Luton, Fulham and Crystal Palace in October, earning recognition for their manager. His side have won eight games from 11 and drawn two so far this season. Spurs were reduced to nine men in a 4-1 defeat to Chelsea on Monday, a result that dents Postecoglou's chances of matching Pep Guardiola's record of four consecutive awards. Former Celtic boss Postecoglou became the first Australian to take the manager of the month award when he was rewarded for a fast start in August, which continued into September and October. Only Antonio Conte, Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp had previously won the award in three consecutive months. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/cd00/live/261060f0-7fe5-11ee-ad76-d7048b0b84b2.jpg

Van de Ven could be out until January at the earliest with the hamstring injury that forced him off in Spurs' 4-1 defeat by Chelsea on Monday. Tottenham target Serhou Guirassy is open to a Premier League move and the 27-year-old Guinea striker, who is being monitored by several clubs, is available for £15m in January because of a release clause in his Stuttgart contract.

How much will Maddison be missed ?..Nicola Pearson, BBC Sport.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/4886/live/57ba5720-7ffc-11ee-a296-2b647c02f497.jpgWhen James Maddison went down holding his ankle against Chelsea after seemingly little contact, there would have been a lot of concern among Tottenham fans. The playmaker, signed from Leicester City for £40m in the summer, has been winning plaudits aplenty for his standout performances during Spurs' impressive start to the season. Maddison has slotted seamlessly into Ange Postecoglou's high-intensity style of play that - before their 4-1 defeat by rivals Chelsea - had seen the north London side top the table with an unbeaten run. After the news that the 26-year-old had withdrawn from the England squad on Friday, the Spurs boss confirmed what many fans would have feared - that the injury is "a lot worse" than they thought. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/519c/live/41940300-7fa3-11ee-8e48-3732970c5b64.jpgHow costly will his absence prove to be ?Maddison has scored three goals and provided five assists in his first 12 games for the club. He currently sits fifth in the league for assists, and top among Spurs players. His influence in attack could be what his team-mates miss most in the coming weeks, with Maddison's 31 chances created in the Premier League second only to Newcastle United's Kieran Trippier's 32. According to Opta, the 26-year-old also sits fourth for big chances created in the league this season (six) - again the most of any Tottenham player. His work in attacking areas and service into other players has been a key part of Spurs' success. Maddison sits in the top 10 this season for crosses played, while comes in second only to Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes for passes into the box. He is also fifth in the league when it comes to chances created from set plays. His desire to get the team into attacking areas shows with his passes into the opposition half bettered among Spurs players only by Yves Bissouma and dribbles attempted topped by Dejan Kulusevski. It's perhaps no surprise then that the opposition have struggled to stop the former Leicester man. Experienced Crystal Palace forward Jordan Ayew is the only player to have won more fouls than Maddison's 30 in the league this campaign. With Postecoglou's side suddenly finding themselves in something of an injury and suspension crisis, it could be Maddison's lay-off until the new year that proves most damaging. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/53E4/production/_131667412_gettyimages-1778845046.jpg
